It’s the first 200 meters that’s nasty, and then the entire rest of it too. The last 200 meters is usually the easiest part.

Ben H

CX races are a 200M hairy sprint from a standing start, followed by a 3-minute all-out effort followed by a 45 minute time trial. The finishing order is 90% sorted out in the first 10 minutes, but you have to keep the intensity up in order to hold your position. CX rules!!! Hope to see more New York City cyclists out there.

what can one do as a team member to better the odds of a teammate for this type of racing? It sounds like a hammerfest from the get-go. Are road tactics as far as a team effort employed?

MH

Other than at a pretty high level, team tactics don’t really play a role in cyclocross. When you have Trebon and Wicks (or McCormack and Anthony, or Nys and Groenendaal) on the same team, and they’re both in a front group of 5 riders and both capable of winning, they can take turns attacking and sitting on the chasers. But for ordinary mortals like us it’s basically just as Ben describes — go ballistic at the start, try not to blow up or fall down too much, and pass as many people as you can.

That’s one of the things l like about cyclocross. After a long season of road tactics and strategy and race plans it’s nice to just go out and play in the mud and not have to think about all that stuff for a change. You should borrow a bike and give it a try.

lee3

yea….I was lookin into this yesterday. Cross bikes are pretty reasonably priced. I saw the BMC CX-01 frame was 1500.00 – and that’s Competitive Cyclist #’s. That’s not to bad. When is the official end of cross season?

shaw

i’ll confirm the fun. did my 1st c/x race this weekend in the mud at jamesburg. women & children beat me but i had a blast. but where was the beer tent?

lee, i got a decent redline bike off of ebay for like $850. i figure i was just going to crash it anyways.

jonathanx

Not sure I’ll have a cross bike anytime soon. Really want to try a race and thinking about doing one on a light hard tail mountain bike with the front shock locked out. Do the rules allow for this and is it even doable?

MH

You’ll see plenty of mountain bikes at the races. I think the only restriction is that bar ends are not allowed. (UCI races have other rules about disc brakes and tire width but those don’t apply to the B, C, and masters fields.)

jonathanx

thanks for the info. To make the bike faster, I’m also thinking about using a smaller road size crank 170.2 instead of the 175 now on the bike. Unlike a mtb xc course, it seems that I won’t need that kind of leverage racing on a cross course.

MH

Hey Ben. I hope to get out to Augusta at least once. I had originally planned to call it a season after the Evo (MAC series) race on the 19th, but I might keep going for another week or two.

Aspholm wins USGP

Just saw enough results from Oregon to tell me that Roger just clinched the Masters USGP title. Congrats to Roger!!
