Connor, McLoon Surprise the Field, Themselves at Green Mountain

“I just figured I’d go for it just like I did 3 years ago” said a tired but happy Trevor Connor (Finger Lakes CC/ChrisCookies.com) after he soloed away from the entire field in winning the Bridges Moretown Circuit Race on Saturday. Connor, who resides in Victoria, British Columbia but is very familiar with the roads of the GMSR from his days living in Ithaca, NY, used the same tactic that won him this stage as a category 3 rider in 2004.

Connor’s final move was setup by a number of breakaways that created a 12 rider group halfway through the 72 mile event. That group was eventually caught with 1 lap to go, and then Connor found himself in a familiar position, off the front on the final climb of the day. He had one other rider with him, but his pace up the climb was enough to shed his compatriot and he was off alone. The field initially did not react, as a lone, relatively unknown rider was not enough of a stimulus for the field to begin chasing. And as exactly was the case in 2004, this doomed the field as they never saw Connor again until it was too late, at the finish. Connor exalted in victory, and the chase led by Joel Dion-Poitras (EVA/Davinci) had to settle for 2nd. Daniel Zmolik rounded out the podium in 3rd.

Anna McLoon (Harvard University) had no expectations for today’s stage. After all, the monster Mad River Road Race was looming and energy conservation was the theme of the day for the 41 rider field. The field did its usual thing as minor breakaways were reeled in and the race came down to a field sprint. As the field hit the 200 meter mark, McLoon was just looking to finish in the field, but saw an opportunity when the front of the group headed to the left side of the road to take the short path to the finish. Daylight opened up, and McLoon just put her head down and went for it. It was with great surprise, mostly to McLoon herself, that she powered by everyone on the outside of the sprint to take the win over proven stage threats Megan Guarnier (Terry Cycles) and Kristen LaSasso (TEAm Lipton). Even after tasting the sweets of victory, her goals for tomorrow were modest at best, “I hope to not have to walk tomorrow!”.

After 2 stages, Connor grabbed the men’s GC lead with his breakaway win, with Igor Miscki (CRCA/Foundation) in 2nd and yesterday’s hill climb winner Mathieu Toulouse (EVA/Devinci) in 3rd. Lasasso’s 3rd place finish was enough to put her in the women’s GC lead, followed closely by Alison Testerote (Colavita/Cooking Light) and McLoon in 3rd.

Tomorrow’s stage 3 is the jewel of the stage race, the Harpoon Brewery Mad River Road Race. The pro men will be traversing 105 miles through 3 mountain passes and close to 10,000 feet of climbing, while the women will do 65 miles through 2 mountain passes. Racing begins at 8:20am at the Mt. Ellen Base Lodge in Fayston.

Kyles permoances have been downright Riffelmacheresque of late. Yes, it can be used in a sentance. Nice win for NYC and NYVC!

Captain Ed

Way to go Kyle! That’s a huge win against the best competition in the east. Somebody posted up yesterday about no NYC results;
that oughta shut ’em up.Congratulations from the piney’s from the south.

John at GMSR

Kyle actually got 3rd yesterday, he pulled a break of four for the better part of the race around, no one else seemed to do any of the work, and got caught right before the line and still managed 3rd place in the sprint.

Fred Arsted

Kyle has the overall lead now in the GC, with JA’s Tron Witt in 4th! Also Brian Gabele from Columbia U has 10th

James Joseph proves to be a toolbox by wearing a national chamions jersey in an event in which he is not the national champion.

thank you doctor.

Chip Berezny who won a National Chamionship this pass week in track racing had his National Championship jersey on during the 55+ race in Denville and Won his race with his Hard Earned National Chamionship Jersey on.So whats is the Difference with James Joseph stop hating and start training and maybe and its a BIG maybe you can wear one of the JERSEYS and wear it Proudly !!!!!!!!

achmed

the rules read that one can only wear the jersey in the discipline and the age catagory that it was earned. anything else is disrespectful the the federation and quite franky, tacky.

Anonymous

Haters if you felt it was tacky and against “The Rules” you should have told the promoter to have him take off his National Championship Jersey because he won The Jersey in Track racing not in Crit racing ? If your not the Federation and not a promoter Shut up and ride your bike ,and then maybe and I mean just Maybe you can Wear a National Championship Jersey next year at the Same Race .

1.3.068 A national individual road champion shall wear his jersey in all road races except one-day time trials and during the world championships for which he may not wear that jersey.

The national individual road time trial champion shall wear his jersey in one-day individual time trials (except the world championships) but in no other race.

The national track, mountain bike, BMX, trial and indoor cycling champions shall wear their jerseys in all the races in the speciality/formats in which one they obtained their titles but in no other race. In a six-day event, only the national madison champions may wear the jersey if they are not involved.

The national cyclo-cross champion shall wear his jersey in all cyclo-cross races but in no other race.

Hey mate awesome result, sorry i could not hang around to see the podium place.

You hid your attack well because I turned round to the guys in the race and said where is are lead car and no one even had a clue you were out there with 5k to go they caught on but it was to late. Great job mate and hoping you take the overall GC and there you were telling me your legs were done, bullshit I say.

KH

1L5. Only current Federation National Champions may wear National Championship jerseys and only in the specialty and age group in which the title was won. However, juniors may ride with their jersey in any age group and masters may ride in any masters age group provided that is the same specialty in which the jersey was won. Members of sponsored clubs may place advertising on the front and back of the jersey in a rectangle 10 cm high and on the sleeves in a single line a maximum of 5 cm high. Only former Federation National Champions are permitted to wear the Stars and Stripes pattern on the trim of their jerseys.

Whatever

So what is your point ? You Quoted the rules now that means your not going to where your Jersey at a CRCA race only on the Track ? Why quote the rules over a piece of (Cotton). Can a man be Proud in piece with being Bashed .

here's the coffee, smell it.

will you ever EVER see Dave Zabriske wear his stars and stripes kit during a road race? No f*ing way. Even though the situation isn’t exactly the same, and the level is different, the concept is the same. Does Ryan Trebon wear any of his multiple national champion jerseys in a road race? Nope. Adam Craig(if he did do a road race)? Probably not. Here’s one. Does Bradley Wiggins wear his World Champions jersey in any road event? Nope. Its against the rules. Thats not the part that disturbs me, and others. Its lame and tasteless. I congratulate James on his Track Masters win. Bravo, Sir. You are a great cyclist, and dare I say, a Great American. Celebrate. Party in your well deserved jersey, spill beer all over it. Wear it while you’re training. But take it off in the events in which you are not the national champion. I personally would be embarrassed to show up in that jersey, having not earned it for that event. There isn’t even a Cat 3 National Champion, so what business does anyone have wearing it? Its common sense.

Wrong Time, Wrong Place.

Point taken but have named all Pro riders not one name was a “LOCAL” Rider. At Nationals its Cat 1,2,3 its not just one Category. Chip Berezny also worn his Track National Jersey during todays race. Now your telling me if your a “Local”and has just won a National Championship at any speciality you wouldn’t wear that Jersey at your Next Race ? Do we forget where just local riders ,are there any drug test at these Local races PP,CP NJBB etc.Give the 50yr old man a break.

KH

I’m not bashing anyone, I’m just sensing that no one has read the rules. I hadn’t — I didn’t have any reason to. The jersey has no pockets, so I have no plans to race in it anywhere but the track, and then only in mass start events. Also, some federations fine riders for not wearing the jersey, so it can cut both ways.

Anonymous

Right on.

I just think its not right. Its not a track race, so don’t wear the jersey…
I don’t see the shades of grey, but I see your point about being proud of yourself, or himself. I definately would not wear the jersey. As a proud US Army veteran, thats akin to wearing a medal that you didn’t earn. thats my point of view.

Anonymous

You would probably get fined for not wearing in the dicipline in which you had earned the Nat. Champ title. In that case, I see the reason.

Anonymous

My original comment was about how whiny and bitchy NYC 3s and 4s tend to be as a group. Given the lack of results, perhaps you should whine less. People read this stuff you know.

Anonymous

what your stating is true, but will we bash Jared,Cupcake(andrew)and Karl and Ken Harris who also won Track National Titles the same time James Joseph if they decide to wear there jersey at the next local race ?Or is this another reason to Bash the 50 yr old man who had a history of “Dangerous Riding”.

Anonymous

Yes, perhaps if J.J. wasn’t so self-righteous during races and even in casual park rides, commanding others how to ride properly while he cannot keep a straight line to save his line, or trying to intimidate others with his famous ‘island’ stare, people would not give a damm about his wearing the jersey. Bash the squid, fast as he may be, old as he may be. He’s earned it.

Anonymous

NO ONE should be wearing a nat. champ jersey during an event in which they are not the national champ. It doesn’t really matter who it is. I just happened to see JJ first hand wearing the jersey during a race.

Does it really matter? Yes. Aside from the results of GMSR, there really isn’t anything more compelling to write about, and it pertains to USA Cycling’s rules, and someones judgement, or lack-thereof.

Anonymous

1) who cares
2) in crits in europe, people wear than TDF yellow jersey, KOM, sprint, national champ, track champ, whatever. fans want to see that shit. i want to see james in his.

Anonymous

Maybe if all the guys who won track national jersey’s wear them, they will help create more interest in track racing.

adm

Arjan did win the cat 3 crit. He soloed away with 4 to go. It was close, but he held them off. Nice ride.

In 30+, Kevin Molloy took 3rd and David Taylor held on to 1st on GC.

The pro/1/2 was fast and “crashy”. Not sure how ended.

4Bs was won by Joe on Blue Ribbon. He soloed last few laps. Accardi overcooked turn 1 and snacked on some hay. Think he’s ok.

Not sure what happened in other fields.

jft

Eugene Boronow started the final move, Connor went with him and left him on the last climb. Then Zmolik, Misicki and three or four other guys caught Eugene. That small group sprinted for second. The field was behind that group.
