This is a crit with a big hill. We used to have more races like this around, but most have disappeared. There’s no place to hide on this course, and selections are made quickly.
It’s close enough to NYC that many people ride there, both racers and spectators– about 5 miles west of 9W from state line.
There’s always a good crowd on the hill, with bleachers set up at the top.
In years past, they had KoM points each lap for the first rider to the top of the hill. Vincent Oliver (a pure sprinter) would sprint up the hill each time and collect as many of the early points as possible. By lap #7, he was on the grass puking. But since he was the most consistent point-scorer, he would win the KoM competition! Vincent was known for his field-sprinting ability, but not for any climbing strength. That took guts.
