Participant Sports, partnering with Versus and the ASO, have created a nifty iPhone TdF app. It’s the only way you can watch the Tour live on your iPhone, and it’s also chock full of additional features such as standings, GPS tracking, video highlights, rider profiles, elevation maps, course previews, photo feeds, breakaway tracking, and twitter updates. The screenshots below give you a pretty good idea of what the app can do. It’s available at the iTunes store for $14.99. I just downloaded it today and it’s a pretty sweet app. I expect it’ll be the easiest way to access information on the Tour, simpler than navigating cyclingnews, for example. I’m looking forward to using it during my weekend at the in-laws who don’t get Versus (and being a distant son-in-law).

Gave their app away for free. No way I’m paying for versus.
any idea if this works over 3g, or only over wi-fi?
They say it works over 3G, I’ll report in after the prologue on how well it works.
I’m so curious why this isn’t available on an iPad…with that big ‘ol screen.
You can do the web browser on the iPad, the video is html5. But that subscription is $30 instead of $15.

Looks great on 3G!
Check out the comments on the app store – almost everybody wants a refund for this dodgy app – very underwhelming
… I’ve been using the app for rthe past 3 days and love it. Even with 3g i can still get live video and all the other info it provides is well worth the measley $15.
Newest reviews on iTunes seem to be glowing. It has been updated in the last day or two, so maybe some bugs got worked out. Quite honestly, it works fine for me.
Also, for full disclosure’s sakes, they offered the app to me for free, but the coupon key didn’t come up on iTunes so I just bought it. Later they gave me a free subscription to the online tour tracker.
This App is still very weak indeed – even after App updates, the content updates (video/standings)…are irregular, and app still crashes now and again.
And did you see that, ***after the end of Stage 3 today, the so-called ‘Live Tracking’ feature indicated that the peloton was already 25km into Stage 4!*** WHAT IS GOING ON???
Speaking as an app developer (and as a cyclist)… Participant Sports and Versus need to SORT IT OUT and FIX THIS APP!!! If you don’t, you are ripping off your customer base (cyclists and sporty iPhone users), and damaging the reputation of Participant Sports as an App developer, and Versus as the provider of high-quality TDF coverage.
Please fix the app!
I working on an Iphone app for the FBF series. Will only work on Iphone 4. Weather updates, real time results, in-race schmalz commentary. Any other ideas?
JJ repellant?
Sorry Andy but have you actually played with the app since downloading it? You might want to grab some alternatives before you head for the in-laws as this is still utterly useless even over wifi – head on over to the app “support” pages on facebook to get a feel for just how fed up people are with this shockingly bad offering.
Just watched the entire stage on it today. With os4, you have to make sure you quit out of the app completely and restart it. Once you do that it works perfectly, as least for me.
This App is very buggy. Other than what must be employee notes, it is universally noted as unusable. The live only crashes a few times an hour, but he replays are completely unusable. I cannot get a single replay to run, and it often requires a phone reset…
I have tried it on both G3 and good Wi-Fi connections. Same result. If they even attempted putting in an error message it would be nice!
Aside from the video issues there are other issues with menu, tracking, etc. I could live with those if I could just see a stage. I can even put up with P and P to see even the replays…
Worse thing is neither Versus or Part. Sports will even respond to user complaints.
Please don’t waste your money on this App.
…this app sucks.
Check out the “Official Tour de France iPhone Application” “LIVE Support” page on Facebook:

and you’ll see virtually nothing but complaints, and next-to-zero support (or even presence) from Versus TV or Participant Sports.
Of course, if you’re just shilling for a fifth-rate sports network, reality may not matter…
