East Broadway at Essex? That sounds like it is south of 14th street. I don’t get south of 14th street very often. I once road out to Prospect Park and spent 30 minutes lost in Chinatown trying to find a bridge.

But I look forward to broadening my horizons and exploring mysterious, non-UES areas of NY. I don’t ride rollers but I’ll go watch. I can’t resist a naming contest. My entry is:

The NYVC / Bike Works “Spinning Drums Classic”.

Ugly

Jeff – How can that be? Word on the street is that you SMASHED all the messengers and hipster wannabes at the Gold Sprints in BKLYN last Friday.

kwk

damm it, i will be out of town, I hope there is another roller race in a bar,

this is one of the coolest and most fun thing to do in nyc.

Anonymous

kwk – according to the end of that video, looks like there will be another roller race tonight at Lulu’s in Brooklyn at 7

Jeff King

Ugly,

Where did you find that stuff! No comment. Go try some Bandit wine. I’ll cheer for you at the NYV / Bike Works race; don’t crash. If you do, I’m pouring beer on you.

ken

as the cat 4 hipster wannabe ex-messenger who came in 2nd to Jeff last friday night, I take offense to that, ugly.

ady

if you folks keep posting the titles without also posting your name, they’ll never be able to reward you for your outstanding work… when’s the deadline for this naming contest?

Luke Stiles

Jeff did well, just as intended. I brought the Kinger as my Ringer. He won by .5 a second. And yes, there is another one this week and next. Come out, and watch me try to close the nearly 2 second gap between me and Jeff. For old time’s sake. It’s at Lulu’s in Greenpoint, from 7 to 10. But it didn’t start until more like 8 or so last week.

As for the NYV December event, I propose the name: 1K Crash Testing – Beer Included.

Ugly

Hey Luke. I know that the messengers are fast and have seen them at the track – no doubt there.

I think I’m just gonna have to come out and roll YOUR long-haired, hippie ass out. Yea, I said that. And while I’m at it, Jeff and your band of markass marks, trickass marks, punk bitches, skip skaps, skanks, scallywags, hoes, heffers, he ha’s, and hulyhoops are next.

kwk

what is with the fork mount on the rollers at lulus????

that is not what the roller races are about, you need to be smooth to be fast, or you suffer the consequences.

Anonymous

skips and skaps with fork-mounts, heffers and hee haws with upturned handlebars, and punkass marks riding short cranks

The Cup

Give it a long official name, The Greater New York National Roller Cycling Cup Championship

But it will be know simply as "The Cup"

A giant crystal cup will be given as the prize. The Cup will hold several liters of beer and the winner gets the first chug as well as his name permanently engraved. "The Cup" will come to rival "The Stanley Cup" as the most famous symbol of winter sports in North America.

Andy

Not sure of the format yet. Alan Atwood will run the races. One thing’s for sure: no fork mounts, no holders except to get started. And maybe Jeff King will pour a beer on you if you crash.

AA

I went to Lulu’s on friday night to check out the roller races…..I think the point of the fork mount is that anyone can hop on and race…..Clearly not as hard core as the bikeworks set up but it is democratic in nature… I beleive smoothness in pedal stroke is still rewarded with a fast time but pedaling squares is not penalized quite as heavily as the "real" roller races.

who needs stands?

doesn’t everyone get a couple of spotters to hold their bike straight? Right? Isn’t it a team sport?

Jeff King

The way some of you guys bounce around on the rollers, you need some fork mounts… and a gel saddle.

Does the "Spillage" part of the name have anything with my promise to "spill" beer an crashers?

Pretty not ugly

Mr. Molloy, Don’t get crazy were not in CP! You will be lucky if you leave with any prizes in hand. Just conentrate on keeping your track bike up, this time.

shaw

i live like a block away. it’s like a home game for me. i should be favored by 3 pts. i think i’ll just drink and leave the smooth pedalling to those with shorter legs.

LaCorte

Aaron as in Wolf? You Rang? I wish that I could have come out to play with ya tonight. Unforchanatly I have to prepare for an all day photo shoot tomorrow. But I might come out next week just to qualify. Hope to see you then… Take care, and good luck tonight.

kevin molloy

no shit. not expecting to win anything, just to compete. i’ll be a winner just by showing up, $10 all you can drink st pauli girls! hope to see you there for a showdown pretty ugly.

but please, leave the fork mounts home…that way we have more time to watch a dude like guy kick ass IN THE HOOKS

i did the brooklyn brewery roller race last year with my road bike in a 53×15 and saw 52mph on the speedo, it’s a treat to ride on that 4x roller setup of dave’s

The London Roller League starts next week too. Mainly road guys from South London clubs.

Speaking of impossible roller feats – Paul Tunnell bunnyhops onto rollers, rides, no hands and one leg etc jumps off and away. Surely it shouldn’t be possible.

Time

What time does this shindig start?

I hope the end time is ??. That’s when you know it’s gonna be a rockin’ partay.

London Roller League

whether they have ridden rollers before or not – in some countries it’s not about winning…. which explains a lot about formerly Great Britain I guess….and the not so United States too

LaCorte

So how does Lu Lu’s work.? Do you have to race the whole night or just qualify for the last weekend in November…? Aaron "Little" Wolf Smoked the field? Did you race Orcott? Tell me it ant so? Blood test on little wolf. Was King there?

Orcutt

Andrew, I raced and stunk up the joint. Got there early and started drinking – mistake. Racing anything in November – mistake.

Beer-Thirty

Drinking is NEVER a mistake. I’m smarter, better looking, and a better driver after I drink. Oh, and funnier too!

LaCorte

So Orcott, you had bad gas huh? So the 17th is the last friday than that you can qualify for the 11/24 final race then, right? Or is it to late to enter now?

LaCorte

Just Spoke to HoGary and he stated that you can still qualify if you missed the first three weeks. Just in case anybody wants to know.

This works out nicely for my bracket, so that’s how it’s going down. Head to Head eliminations, top seed vs last seed, 2 vs. 15, 3 vs 14, and so on and so forth for the first round.

We’ll start with 8 Nikki vs. 9 Tyler at 10-10:30p. Winner moves on, loser hits the bar.

The first round will be 300m. Second round will be 400m. Third round will be 500m. The final will be 800m.

1 Kym 37.06

2 Dagga 41.86

3 Heidi 42.36

4 Lauren 42.46

5 A-Rod 42.46

6 Heather 43.36

7 Val 43.36

8 Jenn 50.48

Same set up, smaller bracket. First round 300m, Second round 400m, Final 500m. First race will be 4 Lauren vs 5 ARod of the bikecult.

If there are no shows, I will take people who came to qualifiers first. Once that list runs out, there may be opportunities for people to qualify for open spots as wildcards. Downside: you will have to race twice with a short recovery. don’t like it? come to qualifiers next time.

We have a lot of races to run tonight, so please do everyone a favor and be there by start time (or risk forfeiting your slot).

Luke Stiles

I’ll be there. Not sure if I’ll ride or not. I still don’t know how to ride rollers, but if I get it figured out by then, I will give it a shot. And likely fall, which I am good at. Just ask Jeff King.

Anonymous

I will donate to charity later, I just want to go and drink beer and watch a bike race that day. No shame in that.

Anonymous

Please explain the extra H. Is that to differentiate yourself from others haters?

It also seems like you are not pure hate, since you love cupcake.

Anonymous

I can’t beleive that the NY rep would make it so hard to upgrade to 2 and give a 1 upgrade to somebody without a single point. All 2s, upgrade to 1 now!

Anonymous

You have to pay the $20 as a loser surcharge. There’s nothing wrong with not drinking, but your a geek for asking and must be punished.

Anonymous

Guess I’ll pass. I can think of plenty of better ways to spend $20. I would not want to clutter your event with losers.

John Spencer

Since we are asking questions to anonymous people. Is there a maximum amount we can drink? If not, will we get tossed out for bad behavior? What I am saying is, I don’t want to go and get thrown out becuase I am trying to get my moneys worth by drinking 15 beers. Maybe there should be a list of things we can’t do? I know what I am capable of at a certain beer level and wouild like to drink accordingly

schmalz

John Spencer – it’s a bar, you get tossed for the normal stuff, I suppose. Drink as much as you can and remain calm and I don’t see how there could be any problems. Love the Explosion by the way…

Pretty

What about Ricky Lowe. What do you say Ricky? Come out and show some of your stuff. Would like to see you go up against some of the best instead of at CP… Mixed it up lets see what you can do.

arone

to add to the controversy:

i think we should lower the entry fee~

personally, i’d rather have a packed bar of lightly buzzed fully conscious good-timers, than a handful of heavy boozers tryin to take advantage of the three or four ladies that will *hopefully* show up…

take a vote!

i say $10 entry, $5 for racers

Anonymous

Arone, this is not your party. You don’t make the rules. If you don’t like it, don’t go. I am going and don’t want to hear you complain.

arone

That’s so funny, because actually, it IS a party that I am helping to throw… lighten up, my post wasn’t a complaint.

But I’ll take your flaming post to be a "Yes to the $20!" vote. Thanks for the input, Anonymous! 😉

inquiring minds want to know - Pretty Ugly

Can we get some odds going again? How about a voting pole that everybody can participate in even if you are not a CRCA member? What do you say Velocity? You guy’s get everybody going on this site. Ever since this site was created cyclists hate each other more than ever. Good marketing though. As weird as cyclist are already, you guys made it worse.

Who is it going to be? Orcutt, King, Wolfe (it won’t be like Lu Lu’s Wolfe, I promiss, I don’t care what you eat), Stiles (do a real roller race and prove that you can win there too, but I have faith in you), Lacorte (at least he eats what he wants, I respect that, but cup cakes, dude what are you thinking?), Molloy (try to stay on the bike this time we are not at Kissena, Should we line the floor with padding though?), Lowe (Turkey Winner? Say’s enough right there. Anyway, we are not in CP, Time to show what you can do at other events!), or even Motor (with his new fancy "to good for anybody" team)?. Who else? What about Mark Brinken (and all of his 135 lbs?) Now that might be worth watching. Yeh, watching a huge ego get shattered. Hey Sherry, how about you? Send someone that you have been training, since we know where you stand TT man. Or is it titty? You are as white as a titty on a woman from South Dakota. We could put a red nipple on your head. We will take the chick. No problem… She is a World Champ she can run with the big boy’s, or can she? To bad Devin is in CA. I am sure that he could show us all how to win, NOT! And Blake, Show us what being a CAT 1 is all about! We all want to know how you did it. How do you know Judy anyway? She is married dude to a man that is three times your weight so why she would look to you is a mystery. I think that she has a son your age too. Nice…. I could understand if you had to pay for rent. But dude, dam, can’t believe you went out like that.

Anonymous

I heard that Dave Wiswell might show up. Jackie Simes just raced the amateur six-day at Ghent and he said he wanted to come. I’ll put my money on either of those two before the other guys you mentioned.

LaCorte

That would be nice is Siems could make it. I am really sorry to hear about Spike. I am sure Bill Ramsey will get some support somewhere soon. What Bill has done for Elite American track racing has been awesome. Best wishes to Ben, Lackie, Gedion, Jackie, and the rest of the team.

i agree with arone

my wife and i really wanted to come watch (not race), but for $20 each we won’t be. probably would’ve only had a couple beers anyway. I’d rather pay 5 bucks at the door and then pay for each drink.

Luke Stiles

Never did figure out how to ride the rollers. And now my brother is coming into town tonight too. So, as much as I like beer and the opportunity to drink 10 or more for the low price of $20, I will not be there to lose, cheer on the winners, or anything else. See you all at real bike races someday…

$20 bucks?

90 percent of my friends showed total interest but when the 20 dollar entry fee came up, I got a lot of puzzled faces and thumbs down. Most of them dont drink and the ones that do won’t be lookin to tank down StPaulie till their blue in the face. 10 sounds reasonable and much more sellable to the non-cycling public. This aint a CRCA party but atleast they’re gettin fed for crying out loud. WTF?

Eliot

"90 percent of my friends showed total interest but when the 20 dollar entry fee came up, I got a lot of puzzled faces and thumbs down"

What the hell City do 90% of your friends live in? $20 for a night out in Nueva York (with live entertainment) is a bargain. You must be another ass clown poster. I bet youre TRI GUY. Geek.

To Eliot...

my friends are Bike msngrs – some married! (me) 10 yr nyk’er (LES) You must be a tourist cause real nyk’ers, not within your clicky snobbish bike circles, see this as a small circle of people throwing a party hoping that word of mouth will pack the joint, which it may, however dont expect to see to many unfamiliar faces.

lee3

The Village isnt the village if one pays 20 bucks to drink. That sounds more like Roseland! So…is Bloc Party playing a set @ Spillage?

A real NYk'er...

..would show up already f’ked up and have no need for beer @ the bar cause they would have already have downed a 40 from the local bodega before going in. (thaswhati’mtalkinbout)

schmalz

The facts:

$20 to watch and drink, the money is split between the bar and Bike Works and NYVC. We will have raffles of stuff all night also.

The entry fee for racers is $10.

I personally have never, ever gone out to drink for a night in the city for less than $20. If you want to drink cheap beer and watch people ride bikes for free – try a bench in Central Park.

If you think it’s too much, the only thing I can say is don’t come. I wish you would, but do whatever your cheap hearts says…

I AGREE

20 bucks is 4 beers if you’re lucky-i went to lulu’s to watch-spent 15 on 3 beers and left smelling like fried food.

Coach L

Beer actually has something in it called chromium picolinate that aids in the buffering of insulin. Remember the old adage: Fat is never burned in the presence of insulin. Not to get overly technical about the advantages of beer as a dietary supplement, but NOT spending the $20 on a big meal, and spending it on the entry for this event might not be the worst idea in the world!

All joking aside, many riders ask me about what is an acceptable level of drinking in the off-season. Of course the less you do, the better, but I understand that its important to unwind and have a little fun during this time of the year. As a general rule (because everyone is different) if you feel a little sluggish in the morning, and have difficulty training (especially weights or plyometrics), you probably had too much to drink. Mind you, I come from a part of the country where it gets dark early and people drink a lot, but I think 2-3 beers a couple times a week is OK. Remember to try to drink 1 glass of water for every alcoholic drink you consume, and to sleep with a glass not far from your bed. There is a trend out there for people to take aspirin before bedtime when they’ve been drinking. While it may help you with your headache, it can be dangerous for your liver, and particularly the production of fat burning enzymes – which you should be building with longer training rides during this time of the year.

Don’t be afraid to have some fun out there, but remember to take it easy too!

Anonymous

"As a general rule (because everyone is different) if you feel a little sluggish in the morning, and have difficulty training (especially weights or plyometrics), you probably had too much to drink."

Good advice.

Coach L

On red wine:

The state benefit of red wine is that its good for your heart. Without getting too much into the science, how this works is that the wine prevents the cross-linking of collagen (tissue in the heart) and prevents the heart from stiffening with age. Research has shown, however, that exercise (training) has the same effect, and that there is a limit on how much prevention can occur. Chances are, if you’re following a well-designed program, you’re getting the maximum benefit, and don’t really need the red wine. I’m not aware of anything similar to chromium picolinate in wine that would aid in insulin buffering.

Girl

Thank you,

One more question. Its sorta personal, but sometimes when I ride it is very uncomfortable in the seat area. What can I do about this? I have tried different shorts with different padding but nothing seems to work.

Anonymous

so, your attitiude is basically – if you don’t like the $20 all-you-can-drink entry, fuck you? nice. i guess you’re just not interested in expanding your audience beyond the cycling-only crowd – or your cashflow for that matter. cool. 2 less people to worry about then.

Anonymous

the cheaper it is, the more people will come. the more people come, the more beer you’ll need. the more beer you need, the higher the price. just keep it at $20.

schmalz

No, our attitude is not "if you don’t like the $20 all-you-can-drink entry, fuck you?" out attitude is, "if you think $20 for a night’s entertainment with all the beer you can drink isn’t a good enough deal, then don’t come". I don’t know what else to tell you, if the price is too high, we’re sorry but we have to give a cut to the bar, and Bike Works and then save some for ourselves.

This is not a revenue generator for us (um, nothing on this site is), we’re just putting on a party, if you can’t swing the $20, stay home. Because it would be sooo much fun to be at a party with someone complaining about the $20 all you can drink thing all night. Woo Hooo!

Is it me

Or are people just so stupid? Just enter the race with your mothers Ross or Saint Tropez or something. Get your ass kicked in the first road then laugh at Schmalz and drink all night.. What freakin fools… Think god dam it before you open your mouth "I don’t wanna pay $20 for all night drinkng." That is cheap in NYC. Stop Bitching and crying.

lee3

Maybe 4 years ago that $ would be questionable but really, ya go to any bar in NYC today and a beer will cost you atleast $7 and thats the 12oz. bottles that go in no time. I’m guessing the beer will probably be an "on tap" deal which will probably mean large glasses, which = good times, all the while watching for crashes (no holders). I’ll be drinkin wine but it’s still sounds worth it by todays standards. Drink up chumps!

Michael Z.

Took the old Basso out for ride today. Did a long ride through queens then headed home to Bklyn. Stoped at the track. It was a very nice day. I saw a couple of road riders on the track with there bikes. But then out of no- where I saw a sweet shinney black track bike but never heard of the name. BZ or BR, something like that. Couldn’t tell. Guy was moving though but in his own world. Nice ride though. Wish I could have talked to the guy to see up close but he looked to be on some kind of a mission and was not stopping. Hope to see that thing again. What the hell was that thing I don’t know… But very cool looking.. Whats up Ugly….

Michael Z.

Thanks Orcott. You are Right it was a BT according to how I remembered the shape. Hey Thanks. I looked on- line and that thing is crazy expensive. Why is that? What is so diffrent about that bike than a regular one. Is it that much better? You said that I might have spotted a Cupcake? What do you mean by a cupcake? Do you know how I can reach this guy? I just have a few questions that I would like to ask him. Do you think that he would mind? Thank you very nuch for your time..

Serious Roller Race Question

What does it take to do well at the roller racing? Power, leg speed, supplesse? Havn’t seen one of these races before and want to know about what I’m watching.

Coach L

All,
Roller racing is all about leg speed, which requires elements of souplesse, and of fast twitch muscle fibers. More than anything, though, prolonged periods of high leg speed require something called "neuromuscular control." Now I know what you’re saying – that sounds like some crazy kinesiology lab talk, but hear me out: The way that muscles and coordination work is through the sequenced firing of what are called motor units. A motor unit is the connection (via the nervous system) between the brain and a muscle fiber or bundle of fibers. Every bundle has a motor unit attached to it. The repetitive motion of cycling actually trains the brain to fire each motor unit EXACTLY when it is needed – not a moment before, or a moment after. In truth, souplesse is a derrivative of this since souplesse comes when muscles are relaxed as much as possible. This is the visible component of souplesse – where a fast moving, hard working cyclist appears to be hardly struggling. The point of it all, is that riding rollers at a high cadence, whether practicing alone or at roller races, will refine your sequencing of motor units. Analogous to this system is the timing and fuel injection system in a car. How that works is that a computerized fuel injection system (with a feedback loop measuring spent fuel in the exhaust) will tell the injectors exactly how much fuel to inject to get maximum power and efficiency when the timing system (neuromuscular control) tells the injector to fire. Engine technicians put a lot of work into this process, but the good thing for you is that you don’t need a technician! Your body will naturally respond to the process of turning your legs over at a high rate of speed. What’s better, is that once you have it (neuromuscular control), you have it for life.
I wish I could be at the Spillage tonight to see this process taking place, but have committments out of town that I need to attend to.
Thanks again everyone.

Serious Roller Race Question

Good stuff Coach L. So if I understand you right leg speed is a lot more imporant for an event like this than power? If so, how much does roller racing translate to real racing? Should we keep an eye on tonight’s race winner when the Spring series starts in a few weeks?

Orcutt

Good roller racers are good at roller racing – these things are basically frictionless, so it’s all spin and roller form.

LaCorte

It is all leg speed in the 1000 meter roller race. However, It is power that qualifies you. The race has nothing to do with power. That is why Gui beat me last year.. His leg speed and perfect rythm is very hard to match. I do have to say that good persuit riders will do well with some roller experience. Look at Orcott. Another killer to catch.

the druming on the ceiling made the 169 bar rock

Mr. Negitive,
Every rider has a specialty area that they are good in. Your area is being a trouble maker.

Gui and I are diffrent riders Mr. negitive. I will say it again. I can’t beat Gui in the pursuit events (that is for sure) and he can’t beat me in the sprint events.

Tired of being on the defense here. You want to be a jerk go right ahead. Just come out with your bike and have a good time.

Thank you NYVelocity for the event. Thank you Allen for coming out to run the show. Thanks Bandit Racing, and cupcake fans for the faith (you too Devon), Thank you Champion (Scott, Morey, Charles) Systems for the sponsorship of the event and winners jersey’s.

Happy holidays to all. Even you trouble maker.
