Fernando Cuevas Benefit Ride

Section head text.

Update:

Hey guys, we have officially raised over $3000!

So here’s the basic plan for the ride. We’re going to leave Central Park around 8 o’clock. We’re going to stop, eat, and collect donations at several places along the way. Then we’re going to end where we started in CP with a get-together.

There will a raffle/auction for some pretty cool stuff, the show piece being a Van-Dessel frame, as well as some more novelty things like custom M&Ms. All raffle pieces have been donated, so the money goes to Fern.

The only thing we have to clear up is how we’re going to feed 50+ people at the end, so everybody please bring food! We’re cyclists, so big dishes are always better, think pasta, bagels, sandwiches, salad etc.

Let’s make this a day to remember!

See you all there!
Chris

Hey everyone. Here’s a note from John Campo:

Hey guys

The grandson of the famous frame builder who has kept up the tradition not only building great frames but running the best Junior program in the Northeast has cancer. He is a very big part of what I do at my velodrome besides taking the juniors all over the country for road racing… We are having a benefit ride for him and his family to off set the cost of his treatments. He is finished with his treatments but is developing heart failure because of them.  He starts oral meds this week and is in good spirits. A contribution here will go directly to Fernando Cuevas.
I thank you all for your continued support and good work.

To sign up for the ride, go to the Bikereg page. If you wish to donate but can’t make the ride, there’s a box for that, too. Details on the ride are on the Bikereg page. The ride will end with a party at a watering hole to be determined later. To learn more about Fernando, check out Campocat’s interview.

On a personal note, we here at nyvelocity hear endless complaints about the state of the ‘discourse’ on this site. People, now’s your chance to show the world our good side. Let’s get together and show everyone what NY racing is all about. Come for a fun ride, give what you can, and let’s help out one of the real good guys from our local scene.

I’m getting donation requests for information. You don’t have to do the ride…. Just register and place a donation in the amount best for you and the money will go to Fern. If you can’t register for what ever reason,
I will be carrying a donation bag for cash donations on the ride. I will turn the bag over to Fern at the party in CP. I want to thank everyone for doing such a great job – Now lets have some fun!!!!!

A lot of readers of this site might not realize that most of the top young local riders came out of the Cuevas Jr. program. Not only did they become very good riders but they stayed with the sport. Of note are Peter Salon, Lisban Quintero and Daniel Zmolik.

Back in the Stuyvesant/Sal Corso days, Fernando sold me my first pseudo racing bike..A red Raliegh Rapide…He was so into it…such a good guy..vibes to him. This guy is cycling to the core.

I crashed only once at Prospect, some might remember my front wheel went twenty feet in the air. Fern and Paco were the first to come to my aid, put my bike together and push me back in the race.

Filip Capala and family

Fernando I wish you all the best and my family does too,Fernando I will always remeber when I won the crit in FCCC and you were there and gave me that big hug it meant alot and still doess, all the best wishes love Filip

Daniel Zmolik

Was always there to help others, even buy bikes for juniors who could not afford them. Driving us to races etc. Lot of good riders started riding, because of his help. Now he needs our help.

Please join us for the ride. I mean how often can you actually help by riding your bike?

List of registered riders is available at bikereg.

A great guy, a great person who always helped people out and never ever hesitated to help out with anything. It’s a shame that Fernando has to be going through this after all that he has given to the cycling community. Please donate

I lost my mother to cancer when she was 49. The financial and emotional strain was/is intense. Fernando and his family need all the support they can get even if you cannot attend the ride.

hahaha

The Cuevas name for bikes was always legendary to me. I never met the elder Cuevas’s but did meet Fernando through the great things he does for local cycling. Both through him bringing up riders and just helping out in general.
