Feeder Sport Argument

Section head text.

Since we live in the United States, almost none of us older pedalers had the chance to grow up in our chosen sport of cycling. I personally went through eras of baseball (peaked in the second grade), football (out after the eight grade), basketball (again out after freshman year – couldn’t go left), and even some swimming – well, enough to become a lifeguard.

Lately there seems to be a huge supply of rowers coming into cycling, so is there a certain sport that serves best as a “feeder” to cycling? Perhaps Jai Alai?

crcanet has a discussion about new book by author of LA Confidential. Is it time to bring it over here?

Also a thread about the Landis trial will be fun. Big fireworks with Greg Lemond today.

You think we’re bad? They’re a bunch of book burners over on crcanet. Reporters to the stake.

I’ve seen at least one local rider who brings a blank number and a thick marker to cold races where he wears some special outerwear so he can make a second number to put on his jersey in case he takes the outwear off, and puts the main number on the outerwear. Who is that…..

Mitch

Yes. You are to believe that there are no Cat 4 pics. Why are you so desparate to see yourself losing a bike race?

Cat 4 Bear

I’m still waiting for the cat 4 Bear pics. Are we to believe that 95-100 cat 4s raced at Bear, and there isn’t one shot of them?

no fine...

his # was pinned to the jersey not the vest. i bet he would have been fined for not uncovering his #s

Cyclist OK after truck runs over head.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A delivery truck ran over a cyclist’s head, leaving him only with a concussion and a mangled helmet. Ryan Lipscomb, 26, was shaken up, especially after he saw the condition of his helmet.

"I didn’t see it coming, but I sure felt it roll over my head," he said. "It feels really strange to have a truck run over your head."

Lipscomb, a graduate student in medical physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was riding swiftly down a bike path in Madison Friday afternoon. As he approached an intersection where he said he had a green light, he noticed the truck preparing to make a right turn in front of him.

The truck wasn’t going to stop, Lipscomb said, so he slammed on his brakes, flipping his bike and landing in the street.

A moment later the truck rolled over his head – and kept going.

His black Giro helmet was flattened, tread marks visible on the cracked frame.

Lipscomb was taken to the hospital and released about three hours later.

"I’m OK except for a concussion," he said Friday night.

Police initially declined to call the incident a hit-and-run, saying it was unclear whether the driver knew someone had been hit. But Sgt. Bernie Gonzalez later updated the accident report to include the designation.

Lipscomb said he was already in the street as the truck was turning.

"The truck driver definitely would have known," he said. "You know when you run over a curb and my head was definitely higher than a curb."

A message left for police spokesman Mike Hanson was not immediately returned Sunday.

following up on JFT’s point, did anyone else see that series of articles on espn.com where some woman is trying to make the olympics in any sport. she tried team handball, and then the pentathlon but has settled on cycling as her best bet (she was a triathlete). anyone else find this insulting. i’m pretty sure she won’t make it.

I played the bongos, and I tried learning to play the guitar. But it actually turned out to be hard work, not something that you get for nothing. And chicks would not talk to me, so I had to pay for them. Now I install custom appliances. It used to be the standard stuff, TVs, refrigerators, microwaves.

Now it’s all ‘home entertainment modules’ and ‘espresso-solutions’. And it’s all for gay couples with earrings and fake hair.

Should have learned to ride a bike.

Chronic Masturbation

Semi-hypoxic training. Increases heart and artery size. Improves focus. Alienaties from social interaction. All these are beneficial for bike racers.

why are people still going on about the stool samples, when the coach already said that wasn’t his post, it was a fake?

To Hot Carl

I used coach L for a while, but I became uncomfortable with some of his methods. I don’t understand why he was always taking my temperature, or why he collected my stool samples. Downright wierd.

Champ Sys Party

So did anyone go? I couldn’t make it – as much as I love racing and all things related, riding the bike a few nights a week takes priority.

Just so you know...

Papp tested positive in Turkey. It was low profile, just like his oh so "pro" career and not talked about too much. Alvaro tested positive at Superweek 2006 and Pulla at 2006 Univest. Did not know those were CRCA races.

Anonymous

Superweek occurred after the CRCA Harlem race and Univest occurred after the CRCA Fall Bear race. They failed tests in races that took place after they placed in CRCA races. Is that clearer?

Hot Carl

I’m a cat4 and being coached by "Coach L." Take it from me, he knows his shit. He get’s really involved with all his clients and even takes us on camping trips.

Asterisk

Papp never failed a drug test and Pulla and Tardaguila failed after winning CRCA races so technically they can’t be dq’d but what about putting an asterisk next to all of their results and mention that they were drug users. To be forever listed in results as a drug cheat can discourage drug use.

A fake Coach L

The stool analysis post was fake. The "real Coach L" was confident enough in knowing this was fake to respond. since "the real Coach L" never challenged the ham and cheese posts, I assume they are for real.

To Coach L

Could you please tell us which of the posts are for real. The one about the ham and cheese must be the imposter. If that was really you, you might as well identify yourself now because your cat 3’s and 4’s are gonna dump you anyway making them eat friggen bread with ham and cheese in a race. I wasn’t there to witness this but we would have heard about the big crash as 15 cyclists fell off their bikes laughing after seeing a guy whipping out ziplock bag containing a ham and cheese sandwich as they start the first climb. This is too much to take. You are just playing us right? Did any of you cat 3’s or 4’s see these sandwich eaters. I sometimes see the odd cliff bar but for the most part it’s Gu.

"Anyone know if [Papp] was the guy suing Millie that forced her to give up FBF races?"

That was someone else.

To Coach L

You should know that people on this board aren’t above much. We’ve been kind of wondering if you’re for real and I guess you are. Since no one knows who you are, I can’t see how we can hurt your practice. Hope you stick around.

I know Bear was the biggie this weekend, but does anybody where results for Prospect are posted?

To Coach L

if you are Cat 3-4 and own a power meter, that is strange enough, but if you need to dope to suck on this level you should really go kill yourself.

calling papp a pro cyclist seems like a stretch

professional self-promoter and f’ing whacko is more like it

Coach L

Hey all,
Glad to offer my two cents on the coach-athlete drug issue. As for my athletes, it would be impossible for any of them to be doing any playing with drugs or any illegal enhancers. I regularly administer urine analysis, blood analysis and stool inspections. These tests provide best feedback on riders health and adaptation to the program as well as drug testing protcol. Without the tests, especially if living in close quarters, a coach should be able to detect changes in athlete’s demeanor and personality. Hope this helps while I cannot comment directly on Joe Papp.

hey coach L

do you administer Happy endings to all of your athletes as well? or is it more of bukkake situation

The real Coach L

Guys:
The below post is not from me. Someone is posing as me and trying to make a mockery of my practice. Stool samples isn’t something I’m involved in. I thought you guys were above posing as me and having jokes at my expense. My client base is mostly Cat 3’s 4’s and beginner riders. I do occasionally discuss doping and always in a negative light. I can’t imagine my riders would be doping as its very risky. I don’t have any formal training in medicine and shutter at the idea of administering injections or prescribing them. One of the things I talk about is how cycling is something we do for fun and somewhere to learn life lessons. Cheating isn’t one of them. Please stop imposting me.
Thanks

Besides being a druggie cheat and a rat I heard that Papp once sued a race promoter after crashing in a race. Anyone know if he was the guy suing Millie that forced her to give up FBF races?

"Let's Talk About Papp"

Let’s talk about Papp, baby

Let’s Papp about all the Papp things
And the Papp things that Papp Papps
Let’s talk about Papp
Let’s talk about Papp

Let’s talk about Papp for now to the Papps at home or in the crowd
Papp keeps coming up anyhow

Cuz that ain’t gonna stop Papp
Now we talk about Papp on the radio and video shows
Papp will know any Papp goes
Let’s tell it how it is, and how it could be
How it was, and of course, how Papp should be

strange that no one submitted photos from saturday’s tour of new york (PP race). i think i saw at least 3 photographers.

BMX! Used to race every weekend in LI. Not up on the sport now, but I’d assume from the new course up at Highbridge and the volume of kids I still see on BMX bikes that it’s alive and well…

Here are the list

bowling(strong fingers), chess(to race smart, all about anticipating the moves!), judo(to learn out to fall), surfing(so you know what you could have been if you did not take up this sport), sumo(so you know how you look now).

crosschecking sprinter

crew (mostly on the erg at the gym), hockey, water polo.

and.. Boxing, or any sport that involves hurting or bullying people (like investment banking, for example), because cycling is about LAYING DOWN THE PAIN and making others suffer.

hockey

I didn’t play it, but it’s the best "major" sport for prepare for local/regional level cycling.

Speed skating and alpine and crosscountry skiing are about as good, or maybe better.

I played volleyball and ultimate frisbee and sucked at those even worse than at cycling. And some fishing (not a sport, but I was good at it).

MH

Any other anecdotal evidence from local riders? I think Ricky Lowe and maybe Anthony Alessio played football seriously. Jeff King played basketball. Some of the Sakonnet guys had other sports backgrounds.

Seems like on the women’s side quite a few people have gotten into racing from triathlons.

Knee Injury = cycling stud?

I know a couple of people that have had significant knee injuries in other sports (basketball & skiing), and part of their post-injury routines was to ride the bike. Once they took up the sport, both of them went to at least cat 2 and had significant success.

Coincidence? You tell me.

Alan

The Notorious 6-FOOT-3

It seems like we’ve got a larger number of fast, tall cyclists than the norm for the sport. Many are former rowers, but others such as Ken and Blake aren’t.

Discuss amongst yourselves, holmies…

Anonymous

There is less opportunity for rowing than cycling, although it seems to be a good way to develop the skillz. Roller blading , ice skating and hockey are good.
Running sports, basketball, soccer, track… develop fitness but less direct impact on cycling muscles.

Question for Coach L

As a coach what responsibilty do you have to make sure your athletes don’t dope? Also do you think you would be able to detect doping by any of your athletes? for example if Joe Papp had lived in your house for several years and was doping the whole time, do you think you would have had a clue?

Papp vs. Eustice

Papp’s testimony will do more to make John Eustice look the lame apologist than to actually hurt Landis.
Eustice is also scheduled to testify but in Landis’ defense. With his history of covering up drug use, it would be better for Landis to keep him far away.

CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT?

VS PAPP…BTW HE WON HUNDREDS $USD IN CUBA AND THOUSANDS IN NYC, IRON HILL, SUPERWEEK, EVERYWHERE ELSE…HE’S WON SEVERAL $10,000 RACES

Heard to yell M*F* BEFORE the finish

Axel Merckx (T-Mobile) has been involved in another crash. The Belgian, in his final year, does not look good. He picked up his Giant bike and threw it back down on the ground.

college rower

Rowers have done pretty well in the local cycling scene, in general. Will Riff, Tom Auth, Mike M, Chris U and others. Rowers have a very high lactate tolerance and generally have a very high anaerobic work capacity. And HUGE legs

Giro

Salvatore Commesso (Tinkoff Credit Systems) is riding at the front to get the peloton to slow down.

JP

"lightweight" football (varsity college football with a 158lb. weight limit), then 20 years of bike commuting. And I still suck.

Papp clearly wants the spot light...what a loser

he should be forced to return his 5 pesos he won at the tour de cuba for his placings

Chris M

Darts, baby. Its all about the finger dexterity and a delicate touch. Oh wait, wrong activity…

H E L L O

DID YALL KNOW THAT JOE PAPP IS TESTIFYING FOR THE PROSECUTION AGAINST FLOYD LANDIS AS TO THE EFFECTS OF TESTOSTERONE, WHICH HE ADMITS USING

Endurance sport

like rowing and distance running. Being from a British colony, I played rugby, cricket and tennis. That was followed by being a pretty successful couch potato. Played some golf too during that time. This is not an ideal launching pad as I don’t think I will ever get rid of the weight gained during those formative years in my late 20’s.
