2011 Memorable moments

Don’t make the bunny cry

I used to think that end of year lists were something that only lazy writers did. You pick a topic, figure out how many listings you want and pow! A list emerges. But I’ve come to change my thinking about end of year lists, they are actually quite difficult, as they require that you remember things that happened over the past year (remembering is not my forte—I’m mostly eye candy around here).

So my idea is to enlist the help of the internet and compile a list of the most memorable New York cycling moments of 2011. Post your moments in the comments below and the most "starred" will get on the list. (Yes, you can star comments on the site, but you have to be signed in—this isn’t a campaign to get more users either, we’ve stopped caring about that, we will always be a poor bike site and we’ve come to grips with that—so sign in and hit the star. You don’t need to be signed in to leave a comment.) And finally, I would suggest you try to be witty and not too vicious, as I am trying to entertain myself here.

I remember when Dan got lazy and started phoning in the articles and also started to be cheap about TOTO

Wheels

Buying $2000 dollar Zipp road wheels for my $4000 road bike on Friday July 13, 2011, then getting dropped the following Saturday July 21, 2011 at exactly 7:05am on the second lap of the CAT 4 Prospect park race.

schmalz

Right now I’m pouring a chardonnay onto my office carpet for Alder, who shall cease to be Alder in 2012, and therefore can no longer ride a smart race.

Logan Tank

When at least half of the women’s field crashed out of the race 100 meters after the start at Maltese. Sorry it’s sexist to point that out but you have to admit that’s pretty epic.

Sacha Rear Entry

Going from 12 mph all out into the headwind to 40 mph with a tailwind at The Kings County Kermese that even Charlie said was the windiest race he’s seen at Floyd.

Hey whiners, in case you haven’t figured it out, Will is running a business. He is obviously not dumb at it and self promotes whenever he can. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe you should try running your own business.

Mango

Innovative organization by Mango seed / WS United of the bike races at Floyd and Prospect Park, memorable events.

Slurpie

yes. somebody is selling some product. for race pacing power is nice, especially with your DS screaming in your ear…
did you go get the road skinsuit and illegal helmet cover too?

Busta Chain

This was the year that Foundation carried the drum for legalized doping.

Wasn’t the winner/Foundation team rider and CRCA champ denied entry into the US within the past 2 years due to the drugs he was importing with him? Was Lisbon not kicked off of Axa/Stan’s No-Tubes due to funky blood values and/or an inability to guarantee clean racing? Despite all of this, all the available drugs in the world will not help Inson ride in a straight line.

Foundation* = Dope Nation

*elite riders only, the rest only fund this.

Thibaut Torque

Capt Wisnia’s nervous neck twitch while addressing the community meeting with a couple of hundred angry cyclists in attendance

Team United put on great races. the best was the 68 mile P 1,2 race with some good money at Prospect.

way fast with great attacking just like an actual race, the bit extra distance changes everything

Wout Bearing

Best moment of 2011, After a very hot and sweaty Tuesday night race at Floyd Bennett, when the image of Dan Schmalz appeared on my saddle. Every Tuesday afternoon tears form to remind me there’s a race that night.

H. I. Colonic

The Schmalz update that included mention of a family holiday to Hershey Park on the heels of his FBF update that revolved around his 5 alarm ‘digestive emergency’ and the post-race evaquation.

Gypped

Samuel Frias (CRCA/Brauer/Mick Management) for cheating his own teammates out the right to wear the leaders jersey only to be caught by the end of season. what a way to loss a yellow jersey at FBF.

Guccio Chainsuck

Ari Schtottle

You are insane if you think a protour cyclist is getting on his trainer, popping in a video, and doing a 45 minute workout based solely in cadence and perceived exertion.
