Interbike ’07: TT and CX

I had one mission at Interbike this year: corner an Orbea employee and ask him/her about the Stealth abomination that is their new TT bike. The guy I spoke to actually did a decent job of filibustering the faceted frame. He basically said that the rider’s churning legs negate much of the frame’s aero advantages, and that this year’s super sharp edges cut through the air better. He said the bike was faster, I asked him ‘faster than what’. The answer? Last year’s Orbea. Faster in the tunnel or faster in computer modeling? Computer modeling. So there you have it, the Orbea Stealth Bomber! Hypothetically faster than the mistake we made last year, and you’ll be invisible to radar in case you’re speeding.

In defense of the Orbea Faceted TT …..
Which is faster a stealth bomber which the Orbea mimics or a Volkswagen Beetle which the Cervelo P3 seems to draw inspiration from?

Did you all know that the B-2 “Stealth” bomber is actually an aerodynamic disaster, and the angular shapes were engineered strictly for the stealth aspect? The B-2 was designed in the 1970s, built in the ’80s. The new F-22 fighter and future fighter-bomber is far more stealthy, and not even close to angular like the B-2. Looks more like a “normal” aircraft. Thats because stealth comes more from coatings than shapes now anyway. Anyway, angular isnt always faster, and can be slower, than rounded surfaces. Lecture over.
