Yeah i’d be concerned about that aswell, I dont know the quality of the product and with lots of springing/flexing and shaking while rolling somethings bound to snap. It is great though, being able to stand while using the rollers. On conventional rollers you wanna die after an hour or so, because you cant get out of the saddle.

Sure, roller aren’t easy. However if your on a trainer or these particular rollers you can stand up and change positiion for a few. After an hour or so on regular rollers it gets a bit uncomfortable, no? Thats whats so great about these.

Jason, it’s totally possible to ride standing on conventional rollers, you just have to give it a shot and go for it. I actually found it really strange on the e-motion rollers, but I was on a really small bike.

Andy’s right here. I was having problems with standing and it turned out to be a drum adjustment. Now I’m standing, no hand spinning and very comfortable. It was good advise.

I have experience with both the TruTrainer and Inside Rode E-Motion rollers. If you don’t feel like reading on, I prefer the E-Motion.
First, to be fair, the TruTrainer have two things going for them. They have, by far, the highest build quality I’ve come across: the way the frame folds and locks is ingenious, and the overall fit & finish is unparalleled. It’s as if they were made by a machinist trying to impress a machinist. Their internal flywheel is a great solution; I’ve always hated having another appendage bolted to the rollers with a belt hanging off. The TruTrainer solution makes for a much smaller footprint and more elegant look. That said, though, at the end of the day, they’re still traditional rollers with a flywheel, albeit a very innovative flywheel. If you’ve ever ridden Kreitlers with two flywheels attached, the TruTrainer feels very similar in terms of coast-down and resistance (though I think the TruTrainer offers more resistance). And while TruTrainer touts their greater drum spread and higher rear drums as innovations, in reality, I think they’re just necessary features to compensate for the design. With the greater resistance provided by the flywheel, you need the drum spread so you don’t climb out of the “pocket†(accelerate up the drum). As you as you increase the spread that much, you have to raise the drums to keep the bike level. At the end of the day, they still seem to be a traditional roller experience, even if they’re the best one going. Frankly, I think if the flywheel were external, instead of hidden internally, nobody would even give them a second look!
I definitely prefer my E-Motion rollers. The E-Motions really mimic the dynamics of riding on a road, especially when accelerating. Until you ride a set, it’s tough to convey how revolutionary they are. Don’t think of them as rollers! Yes, they have three drums and require you to balance, but that’s where the similarities end. They are a machine that allows you to replicate outdoor riding, plain and simple. Think of them as a true treadmill for your bicycle. Compared to the TruTrainer, their flywheel is not as substantial terms of maintaining momentum, but it does enough to smooth the ride and keep things going as you shift weight or stand, etc. The build quality is excellent (but not jaw-droppingly so). The “float†is provided by large rubber bands (think Bowflex-size) that allow the rollers to slide briefly within the outer frame before returning back to neutral; they are under little stress, and should not be a concern for the life of the rollers. I think the E-Motion rollers will outlast me. If you think of rollers like a trackie, a training tool used for pointing out technique flaws when you bounce, you’re approaching the E-Motion with the wrong perspective. Traditional rollers will always have their place; they’re a great tool to work on spin and form in short sessions. I look at the E-Motion as an all-around replacement for outdoor riding during the winter or when I can’t get outside (rain, nighttime, etc.). It is for that reason I happen to prefer them to TruTrainers. But you certainly can’t go wrong with either.

Yea…..I got rid of those old rollers so I cant check that but I know the distance was no more than 3/4". The front wheel was pretty much on top of the front roller and not behind it so, yes that 3/4 dim. could be the distance proud of the front wheel hub, not behind.

Thanks Lee. Thats pretty much how I have them set now. If I adjust it to the next set of holes it seems to far in fornt of the hub. I think its just a matter of getting used to being out of the saddle and not killing myself!

The new XTR looks pretty cool. of note is that the new XTR cranks use a new interface to connect the left arm to the right arm/bottom bracket spindle. It is a tapered splined press fit. So the pinch bolt system is gone for this year. I’m pretty sure the pinch bolt system will dissappear on all their parts in a few years. They saved a few grams by making that area of the crank thinner since you no longer have the pinch bolt.

Jason, it’s totally possible to ride standing on conventional rollers, you just have to give it a shot and go for it. I actually found it really strange on the e-motion rollers, but I was on a really small bike.
Andy’s right here. I was having problems with standing and it turned out to be a drum adjustment. Now I’m standing, no hand spinning and very comfortable. It was good advise.
OK, but for those who’ve tried ’em, which one do you prefer?
i’ll give it a shot. I can do the no handed rolling, but I havent built up the guts to get up and stand.
Crash and Burn!
I have experience with both the TruTrainer and Inside Rode E-Motion rollers. If you don’t feel like reading on, I prefer the E-Motion.
First, to be fair, the TruTrainer have two things going for them. They have, by far, the highest build quality I’ve come across: the way the frame folds and locks is ingenious, and the overall fit & finish is unparalleled. It’s as if they were made by a machinist trying to impress a machinist. Their internal flywheel is a great solution; I’ve always hated having another appendage bolted to the rollers with a belt hanging off. The TruTrainer solution makes for a much smaller footprint and more elegant look. That said, though, at the end of the day, they’re still traditional rollers with a flywheel, albeit a very innovative flywheel. If you’ve ever ridden Kreitlers with two flywheels attached, the TruTrainer feels very similar in terms of coast-down and resistance (though I think the TruTrainer offers more resistance). And while TruTrainer touts their greater drum spread and higher rear drums as innovations, in reality, I think they’re just necessary features to compensate for the design. With the greater resistance provided by the flywheel, you need the drum spread so you don’t climb out of the “pocket†(accelerate up the drum). As you as you increase the spread that much, you have to raise the drums to keep the bike level. At the end of the day, they still seem to be a traditional roller experience, even if they’re the best one going. Frankly, I think if the flywheel were external, instead of hidden internally, nobody would even give them a second look!
I definitely prefer my E-Motion rollers. The E-Motions really mimic the dynamics of riding on a road, especially when accelerating. Until you ride a set, it’s tough to convey how revolutionary they are. Don’t think of them as rollers! Yes, they have three drums and require you to balance, but that’s where the similarities end. They are a machine that allows you to replicate outdoor riding, plain and simple. Think of them as a true treadmill for your bicycle. Compared to the TruTrainer, their flywheel is not as substantial terms of maintaining momentum, but it does enough to smooth the ride and keep things going as you shift weight or stand, etc. The build quality is excellent (but not jaw-droppingly so). The “float†is provided by large rubber bands (think Bowflex-size) that allow the rollers to slide briefly within the outer frame before returning back to neutral; they are under little stress, and should not be a concern for the life of the rollers. I think the E-Motion rollers will outlast me. If you think of rollers like a trackie, a training tool used for pointing out technique flaws when you bounce, you’re approaching the E-Motion with the wrong perspective. Traditional rollers will always have their place; they’re a great tool to work on spin and form in short sessions. I look at the E-Motion as an all-around replacement for outdoor riding during the winter or when I can’t get outside (rain, nighttime, etc.). It is for that reason I happen to prefer them to TruTrainers. But you certainly can’t go wrong with either.

Thanks Lee. Thats pretty much how I have them set now. If I adjust it to the next set of holes it seems to far in fornt of the hub. I think its just a matter of getting used to being out of the saddle and not killing myself!
The new XTR looks pretty cool. of note is that the new XTR cranks use a new interface to connect the left arm to the right arm/bottom bracket spindle. It is a tapered splined press fit. So the pinch bolt system is gone for this year. I’m pretty sure the pinch bolt system will dissappear on all their parts in a few years. They saved a few grams by making that area of the crank thinner since you no longer have the pinch bolt.
