Sausage party

We had our annual pre-holiday foray into the city to dine at Rolf’s yesterday. For those of you unfamiliar with Rolf’s, it’s a German food restaurant on 22nd and 3rd that decorates for the holidays in a manner that suggests they filled multiple cannon and blunderbusses with lights, garland and slightly creepy angel dolls and then took dead aim at the restaurant’s interior and fired indiscriminately at any open wall or space – my daughter’s love it. I also love it because they serve up a damn fine wurst platter, one that I dare say would make Jan Ulrich’s eyes tear up to look at it. I gleefully downed every last piece of encased meat brought my way, and that’s why I’m checking in today at 156. Does that paragraph sound like an apology? As it is not.

I rode easy today after a weekend off the bike. I’m getting too tired from training, I can tell because I’m having trouble sleeping. Fans of overtraining will recognize this classic symptom. It sounds counterintuitive, but the more tired I get, the more restless I become. I’m sure this is true for most people also – or I am among the undead that roam the Earth and am not yet aware of it. Either way, I wasn’t doing any bike riding over the weekend, undead or not.

I’m still at my “wurst weight” and judging from the daunting gastronomical plan for this week for this upcoming week, I may be keeping my sausage weight on for awhile. I’m still not worried – no need to break out the cottage cheese yet. Does anyone else remember the time in 70s sitcoms when eating cottage cheese meant that a character was on a diet? I mean, cottage cheese – really? It’s curds of cheese with creamy dairy stuff around it. How did this get to be considered diet food? And what were people eating that made switching to cottage cheese seem “light”? Were they drinking milk with chunks of ham and oysters in it?

Today I did my 20/10s on the rollers, and was predictably disappointed. I’m about 50 watts below what I would get on my regular uphill ride. I will chalk it up to rollers and the challenge of getting out big watts on them. I can’t blame the sausage can I? How can sausage ever lead you astray?

Today will be an escape from my sausage fixation – how dirty does that sound? I was going to start my weight lifting this week, but after a visit to my neighbor’s house on Friday night and a heated game of baseball on the Wii, I woke the next day feeling as if my right shoulder and arm were about to fall off. That’s right, I’ve had to put off my weight training because I’ve been injured by a video game. How elderly does that sound? I’m two weeks into my forties and I get taken out by a goddamn video game! I’ve been dutifully icing my shoulder and treating with Chomper’s Muscle Butter (just lovely), Advil and alcohol. I haven’t stopped riding though, because who uses their shoulder to ride a bike?
