Look at all of you, still racing and achieving your dreams of athletic competence or better—it’s inspiring. I would join you, but my personal ambivalence has set in, and I no longer care. But I do pretend to care about the results of others, so I will its them now.
At the CRCA Masters Throwdown, Andrew Estevez of the Innovation Bike Shop team won the 28.2 mph 3/4 race. The unattached Radoslaw Smolaga won the men’s 40+ race. Sarah Chubb Sauvayre of BH/Comedy Central won the women’s 35+ race. Doug O’Neil of Wonder Wheel won the 50+ race. Kathryn Murtagh won the women’s cat 4 race. Results are here.
Meanwhile at the Chris Thater Memorial Crit, Luke Keough of UnitedHealthcare won the pro/1 race. Ellen Moses of BH/Comedy Central won the women’s 45 and is MYSBRA State Crit Champ. Carol-Lynn Mills of Houlihan Lokey won the women’s 35+ title. Results are here and here.
In New Jersey, there’s a new women’s 35+ master champion and her name is Caryl Gale, those results are here.
He would have been tested if he rode the final day? What does he gain, doping wise by pulling out a day early?
are you sure about that?
Oh it was
Sorry, Strava data is not supporting that speed. It looks like it was fast, but that average is wrong.
That is sheer poetry: “I would join you, but my personal ambivalence has set in, and I no longer care.”
Rafael Meran was on the podium at Chris Thater, he got 3rd. Very impressive.
(BTW, I’m neither a Foundation rider nor a dark/medium-skinned Hispanic.)
That is impressive, but there’s no team listed?
The race time is listed as 1:20:53, surely someone (not me) can do the math? The race started at Cat’s Paw and ended at Engineers.
Strava does the math for you
I finished with an average speed of 27.9 mph (not GPS).
Lap 1 – 13:05
Lap 2 – 13:10
Lap 3 – 13:10
Lost track after that. Was a great match-up between Foundation and Six Cycle attacks. But in the end, I guy racing solo takes the win. Doh.
That was a fast one for sure…we (team sixcycle) were treating this as a race to give some of the guys on the team that didnt get many chances for them self this year to have a go….it ended up making for a fast one but not getting the win. oh well. nice clean racing out there guys. Fun day!
The CP rule of thumb, fast race=field sprint.
Lisbon also is the NY State Crit Champ. Nice job!!!!
Doper
loser
Its Rafael Meran from Foundation who is the State Champ.
I think Rafael has a foreign license.
6 got tested at Binghampton in the pro race and others in the other races.
Hater
Word is out that Cesar Marte and another from the Lou Maltese testing came back positive and are meeting with USADA today..Say it ain’t so..
Are you serious he’s the next best thing since Sagan. Impossible!
Zach Koop – a bit too much pep in his step lately.
Loehner, Murphy, Vidal, Paredes,Koop, Olsen,Meran, Munoz,Burrows and more to come from lesser cats.
He got tested at Thater yesterday.
Meran got tested at Thater*
Who finished behind Lisbon in the state crit.
I want to be tested!
Now that cycling is clean, the 40+ guys can go back to winning the big races.
I know people wont agree with this, but I’m pretty happy to hear about how often there is testing being done at NY events. It may be small, but it’s something and better than nothing. Way to go USADA/NYSBRA keep it up.
Not a Burrows or a Burrows fan but their results this year as a opposed to resent years would be a waste of time for USADA. Turn back the clock to the previous years then hell yeah. Pack fill for 2013.
I think Koop is clean and same with Antonio. Based on knowing them and riding/racing with them. But I understand having Zach tested simply because his results are what they are.
You already do not sound too sure of yourself. Lets keep it real and let USADA decide. The sport is sloppy already. Get rid of all the posers. But honestly I love how United Healthcare is dancing between the rain drops. Or is because their parents were so athletic….YAWN.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, 8/27, is the last day of 2013 Tuesday Night Racing at FBF. To celebrate “Veselka” will be offering the followings:
* $10= All you can drink BEER!
* $10= All you can eat pierogies!
* $5 = Burger!!!
{tax/tip separate}
All racers and cyclists are welcome.
Starting around 8:30pm.
Veselka is on 2nd Ave/East 9th St. A landmark Ukranian restaurant in NYC. They do a lot to support the cycling community beyond racing. If you are in the ‘hood or mood, swing by!
One down 999 to go.
Zach is a nice kid, but he’s not exactly winning NRC races.
I got tested this weekend, damned herpes.
I got tested by my anti-aging doctor. He has conveniently recommended a testosterone patch, and HGH.
I for one would like to come forward and say that I think Zach is rad.
Totally agree. Just meant that to start tossing his name in the heap of shit known as those in need of testing is a wee bit premature.
but nobody badmouths Zach Koop. I’m with Schmalz on this (as much as it pains me to agree with him in any way).
he’s definitely one of the nicest dudes in the NYC peloton while being a complete beast on the bike.
I remember when D. Anthony was the nicest and most popular guy int he peloton, then USADA. Sorry but now a days we can’t just trust people, if you see the kind of nice people the Joe Papps list is full of, you’d be amazed. We all need to be tested, like if it is HIV.
WHERE CAN WE SEE THE JOE PAPP LIST THAT YOU TALK ABOUT ? WHO IS ON THAT LIST ?
Mastersbater, nice job today at the Vuelta!
I think that lost will always be urban legend and never surface. Wouldn’t the people on his list be from 6+ years ago?
Since when does ratting out other riders to the race official to benefit yourself make you a nice guy?
http://youtu.be/St1VXFYEQxs
So what are we saying here? That anytime a guy wins a few races he is a DOPER. WTF!!! Then maybe we should start awarding last guy across the line, instead of the first guy. The last time I checked, I usually go to a race to try to win not to be accused of taking illegal drugs. It’s very easy to sit behind a keyboard and make ignorant comments about a sport that I believe we all love. Does everyone here believe that this is the appropriate manner to promote the sport? Like for example a father telling his son ” try to do your best my son, but don’t win. Is not worth the hassle that comes with it.” It’s is crazy……
Zack is 24, race mountain bikes and works his ass off. DA started racing at like 43 with no background and was beating 20 somethings in climbing races. Apples and Oranges.
Rock on Zack.
@ Marius Torque,
Yes, that’s when happens here. These comment threads attract bottom-of-the barrel, anonymous trolls.
Things got out of proportion here. It was a suggestion of people who should be checked, not accusing everyone. if we all get tested at least once every two years randomly I assure you we will get rid of dopers, nobody will take the risk to be the next DA. Zack is a hard working guy, same as the others, same as DA was. Let’s just let USADA tell who is who. Believe me you’ll be amazed/
I am totally down with that one
Yeeaeeeaahhhhhh, participation medals at CRCA! Everyone’s a winner!
Well, considering controls at GFNY was widely publicized and DA still doped before the ride, there will be a next DA, provided USADA keeps testing at NY events.
USDA will be testing for fat content at the next FBF race.
If you’re well marbled, you’re likely to get cooked.
The focus on doping is depressing. Its bowling league racing we do. Have fun and try to limit thinking the worst of other racers.
having ridden with Zach many times, I can attest to the fact that he is much stronger than I am or anybody I know because of the work he puts into his life. For many of us, we eat, breathe and sleep bike racing, but I don’t know anyone who works as hard as Skoop and i don’t know anyone who deserves it as much as he does. He’s an absolute beast and there should be no shred of doubt in anyone’s mind that he got to where he was today because of his hard work and dedication.
Zach is 100% man, but my word doesn’t mean anything. Testing him will be the ultimate validation for his dominance (as if that were ever under question).
For those of you who know him, his modi operandi are racing hard and racing clean. He is an outspoken lobbyist of clean racing…except he speaks with his massive pistons and not his words.
Viva la campione di elite NJ stato!
The only reason Zach won the NJ State Crit was because of the other guys got boxed in for the sprint! It wasn’t a clean sprint, but a lucky one!
IN HIS STEP
I understand that the only way to discount your trolling is by either listing his flaws or procuring his nonexistent results…
AND I WILL NOT FALL FOR IT.
He’s got just as much pep in his step as someone with that much hard work and dedication deserves to have. Anyone who views it as too much obviously doesn’t know Zach from even an impersonal standpoint.
he used to kick ass on a folding bike when he first started club racing
Trust me. I know him. That’s nice, a folding bike. And Wilson use to whip ass on a mountain bike. And he’s no cleaner than the bottom of shoe.
Trust me. I know him. That’s nice, a folding bike. And Wilson use to whip ass on a mountain bike. And he’s no cleaner than the bottom of shoe.
I appreciate your enthusiasm, and I agree that the focus on doping is absurd, but your arguments that A) he is really strong B) he works really hard and C) is antidoping are not exactly airtight. They have kinda been used before in defending people who turned out to be really dirty. Just let testing speak for himself and allow the idiots to shoot their mouths off
It’s so exciting to have a doper as the NYS Criterium Champion!
http://www.nysbra.com/2013/08/26/criterium-state-champions/
Just a heads up. You heard it here first. This site may talk trash but the users are savvy enough to call out a poser when they see one and their usually right given enough time for the proof to materialize. If a guy is willing to dope for a gran fondo then yes he will to win a series. Obviously not for the cash but the feeling of dominating. Face it, that’s just the nature of man.
Last week – “Froome pulls out of the US pro tour due to tightening of he chest from the high altitude in Colorado.”
Again I call BS – the climbs in the TDF make the climbs in Colorado look like Harlem Hill and Froome can’t hack it?!?!?!
PLEASE STOP THE SMOKE AND MIRRORS.
it’s probably called “showing up to make token appearance and then leaving.”
how many euro riders treat u.s. races as training rides or post-tour events?
many always have.
Sagan and his boys surely didn’t treat it like a token. Maybe it would raise too many questions if the yellow TDF jersey came a won AGAIN. For a guy riding circles around guys at will on big boy climbs all over France he could keep up with TJ?!?!?! Again, the excuse for him pulling out is questionable.
Let me guess Richie Porte who was also riding on tokens will magically win the Tour next year.
STOP THE SMOKE AND MIRRORS
blah..blah…blah…more incorrect info…get your facts and your organic riders straight…..zach never rode a folding bike in a race.
zach rides a mean recumbent.
that was Jack Baransky. Great guy.
I heard Zach beat the pro field on a unicycle
Well at least when it all boils down. He was a nice guy.
http://nycunifest.com/
Where is Jack these days? His sister was an excellent photographer too
great dude, the organic team really folded without him
yeah, jack moved away to VT a few years ago. he was a great guy and is missed. these days, organic is scattered to the wind, except for a few guys who still ride together wearing the kits, but don’t really race at all.
would you say the team is currently composting?
You really elaborated on what I said there.
Was a fine team fro awhile, and yes was driven by Jack, a great guy. Hope you are still reading, miss ya. We did have a schism which began the decrease, and then a lack of leadership. I moved to another ‘green team’ If anyone is Vegan, Organic-only eating, or a wanted to be, such as myself, see Alex who can get you intouch so perhaps if you too are a nice guy or gal could replant upon the fertile compost!
I want to race for Hormonal Antibiotic Athlete.
kinda had the momentum sucked out of em by the whole lance jersey whatever debacle
so, mister drake…I know you lurk here, you wanna explain your fb post about omerta, or does that mean that you decided to play along
I never play along. Duh.
Lurk? No. I am just a fan of this site and check it daily. It’s one of the most honest sites in the sport.
Dieter
the 24 yr old working class kid that works at a bike shop and has time to ride his bike all day is the one that’s probably doping, not any of the older guys with healthy incomes and delusions… FFS…
Lance had all day to ride as well.
The things folks point to as indicative of a guy doping or not doping are largely irrelevant. Even testing, sarge pros have been proven, doesn’t provide concrete evidence. DA got caught because he misjudged the odds of being tested at the fondo. If Darwin didn’t rule the day he may still be racing.
‘as pros have proven’
At least he’s a swell guy while riding a fold up. That’s what really counts.
Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr: You. You’re the elevator killer. Merv Griffin.
Merv Griffin: Yeah.
Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr: Why?
Merv Griffin: I don’t know. I’ve always just loved to kill. I really enjoyed it. But then I got famous, and – it’s just too hard for me. And so many witnesses. I mean, *everybody* recognized me. I couldn’t even lurk anymore. I’d hear, “Who’s that lurking over there? Isn’t that Merv Griffin?” So I came to Europe to kill. And it’s really worked out very well for me.
I know Guliani is the one that gave NYC the moniker of “Capital of the World”, but everyone realizes that NYC isn’t the center of the universe for bicycle racing, right? Anyone who’s good, even good enough to be a domestic pro, has dominated their local racing scene (and NYC is just a local racing scene that isn’t anywhere near the pinnacle of the sport in the US, let alone anywhere else), so stop thinking that because a kid in his 20s is winning that he must be juiced
Speaking of, the people that are talking about DA (who was forty-fucking-three years old) and using that as a reference in comparing to a kid who’s had a natural progression of getting better, need to take a course (or just do some googling) in basic human physiology. There’s a HUGE difference in what your body can do in those 20 years that separate the two.
I tried Viagra to improve my cycling performance, but riding in Central Park with a boner under my Rapha bibs got old.
Nobody is accusing the 20 years old kid of anything, we suggest he should get tested, everyone who is winning should get tested. NOBODY said he is in to something, neither the others.
if someone is suggesting he should be tested, then they are suggesting that that person doping. it’s pretty simple.
If you have a ride lasting longer than 4 hours, seek medical help immediately.
Sad, old guy pills and stoner drugs being on the banned PED list has consistently produced some of the least funny jokes on this site. Please resist the temptation.
If you didn’t suspect him, you wouldn’t ask him to be tested. I agree.
Unless it’s so that you could flaunt his results around as if they were an elite state jersey…
I suspect a lot of the doping testing cheerleaders are particularly untalented. A reasonably strong rider can win our fun local races. Delusional a$$hats like DA went whole hog, but for someone with a bit of talent (especially someone in his 20s), results will come from time to time.
Seriously, why is THC on the list?
I think if someone is winning clean and others riders are questioning him, he should be tested to proof that, not only prove it but it also tell other riders out there that you can win and perform at high level without doping. If I win, I want to be tested, so people STFU. Got my point?. if we do that, dopers will have no place in cycling, cause they cat win and not be tested.
The THC question is answered in the USADA PDF handbook.
What about testing for the asshole gene?
The THC question is often, “Dude, where’s my bike?”
@USDF. How many times was Lance tested with no positives? It’s meaningless. All it proves is that you can pee in a cup. BFD!
Just ride your bike and race to the best of your ability. The important part is having fun. All else is secondary.
I understand what you’re saying, but I can already see this circling back around to the, “how sad is it that if someone does well, they’re immediately put under the microscope?” delineation of questioning so I’m just going to withdraw from the conversation.
Can I get a sentence diagram in here please? I’m very confused.
…we come full circle back to what we’ve been asking you to do for months now, Eli.
Amen to that, ol’ moldy. Eli…youre not a good writer and youre even worse at remembering how short your “breakaway” attempts are. I usually respect and admire guys who put themselves on the block in this sport, but you dont get it on so many levels.
I don’t like to call out guys who at least put themselves out there and try something, but you really, really need to take this shit, and yourself, a little less seriously
eli don’t listen to these naysayer never-was’s. you’re living the dream, sacrificing everything to pursue your goals. nevermind that your goals are stupid or that online porn is your only social outlet. that’s besides the point.
now get out there and download & analyze your power data.
I don’t even understand why we’re focusing on me here, but….
What I was saying is that this is quickly devolving to the point where one of y’all (it may even be me) will say, “It’s terrible that anyone who does well is immediately an assumed doper.”
Sorry if the sentence structure was unclear, my mind works backwards most times.
Sometimes I wonder who you guys are and I’ve ever met you. Then I remember that I mostly ride with the same 3 or 4 people every day and have no social life outside my bike so….
….chances are no.
Since all y’all are being such sticklers for my grammar:
and if I’ve*
It’s Not About the Sentence Structure
@Eli At least you post your name and don’t hide behind an anonymous computer. Keep up the good work and if you must spend time on the computer, this site is not always the best place to do it.
So where are all these official announcements regarding all the failed tests? Sounds like the typical nonsense of NYVelocity.
I, for one, have ridden with Eli (not one of the usual 3-4 people…) and can say for a fact that he doesn’t take *anything* seriously, nevermind himself. He likes to write blog posts, he likes to post on NYV (and does so under his real name). I’m all for attacking his opinions (silly Eli), but let’s support people who put themselves out there (otherwise we’ll have no opinions to attack :'( )
Stop making fun of Eli otherwise we won’t be able to make fun of Eli.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc
the only thing eli should take more seriously is his sock length.
When does your Internet off season start?
I didn’t realize we were doing that. Starts right after yours.
Zach might be strong and an OK sprinter, but he’s not turning Pro anytime soon. It’s a lot harder to become Pro than a lot of people can imagine. You need to be winning or up there in the Pro NRC races and no these local clown crits!
my wife gives me $8 for lunch at each race as a stipend, does that mean i’m pro?
Yes, lunch money is pro.
with all those guys boxed in you should always wait so it will be a clean sprint
If you were boxed in on a course that wide with a finishing straight that long………you flat out SUCK!
If you were boxed in on a course that wide with a finishing straight that long………you flat out SUCK!
Positioning is everything in a high speed sprint! You get boxed in, there’s not much you can do, the speed is too fast to be able to get out of it!
