going riding, in the dark, so as to only ride with raccoons…
Now that all the roadies have invaded the mellow sport, I’m reading the same namecalling hate filled race reports. HA!
Did anyone get any pictures of the raccoons on the ride?
A couple of weeks back a raccoon almost took me out in PP. As I passed by it growled at me.

it’s mildly baffling to me how such a simple concept is confusing to you. We spend a lot of money on bike shit. We try hard to look good while using our bike shit. Your question may as well have been “why do bike racers shave their legs,” because, obviously, we try to look the part. Having a picture of ourselves competing in this sport allows us to show it off. Facebook. Send it to Grandma. If you put 2 and 2 together, the juxtaposition should be quite obvious.
And saying, “absolutely no other sport is like this” is complete bullshit. Perhaps seeing many photo-related comments on this side gives a skewed perspective as to the actual desire for photos, outside of the website. But I doubt it. Cyclists aren’t that different from everyone else. We just try really hard to be.

untrue. runners do not request photogs to show up. I know of no other sport that does this. my shit stinks in plenty of ways, not in this one though, and I am seriously just trying to understand it.

Bike racers are obsessed with photos because there are photos there to begin with. I’ve played league basketball and tennis, and absolutely not one picture was taken, ever. Those sports aren’t as interesting or challenging to shoot, and you can’t get a great shot as amateur bball and tennis players look like shit.
Bike racing, however, is challenging to shoot, and even a cat 4 race can look pretty pro with the nice gear, matching kits, and (hopefully) fit riders.
So I say it’s a chicken/egg thing. The prevalence of photos is what makes bike racers vain.

that is actually a reasonable answer (and funny, as basketball and tennis are the 2 other sports i had in mind, although you could expand to soccer, baseball, really any others)
