Local guy makes good
Local racer Gavi Epstein has just confirmed that he has been given a one year contract to race with the Sugar Labs Slipstream Sports continental team (not the Garmin Transitions Pro Tour team as has been reported elsewhere). He will be added to the current line up that includes:
Andrew Barker (USA)
Robert Bush (USA)
Elliot Craddock (USA)
Alfredo Cruz (USA)
Maxwell Durtschi (USA)
Alex Howes (USA)
Andrei Krasilnikau (BLR)
Raymond Kreder (NED)
Lachlan Morton (USA)
Anders Newbury (USA)
Jacob Rathe (USA)
Thacker Reeves (USA)
Thomas Scully (NZL)
Robert Squire (USA)
Daniel Summerhill (USA)
Gavi has earned this. Most of the haters only see what he does at the local races, which I am sure he treats only as training rides. They need to see his other results to see why this is well deserved. One other thing to keep in mind is that Gavi is young, so many teams want a young guy who they can develop into a top notch pro. I wish him the best with the new team.
Oh snap… Elsewhere… Is this a feud!? Please let it be a feud–we need something interesting to happen
Congratulations Gavi – good to see one of our local guys getting a great opportunity
Well deserved, good luck…
As good a rider as Gavi is, he is a better teammate and person. Best of luck Gavi!
Also, Lachlan Morton is Australian and one of more promising younger riders out there.
Over the years, there have been a select few from the NY metro area who have secured contracts at this level. Gavi, you really are a great representative of our cycling community and are mature beyond your years. Kudos also to Foundation, Mengoni, Sakonnet and others who have provided you with the opportunity to get to this point. Wish you a great 2011 season and many, many lifetime memories from Sugarlabs-Slipstream..and beyond.
Lachlan is a beast, so is Newbury.
well deserved Gavi!!!!!!! congrats! great inspiration for the local scene!
How did this kid go from lame cat-2 with no results to pro?
i like all of you clowns telling us what the pro teams are looking for

Isn’t an asshat just a clown with an upgrade
Hey, check out the asshat calling us clowns.
We’ll be selling clown upgrade points as soon as we get our e-tail system set up.
Congratulations to Gavi! The main thing these pro teams look for in young riders is future winners. They are less concerned if a young rider dominated in local races. They want to see a maturity, willingness to learn and become part of the team. A racer that can become part of their development process and take to the next level. They can see the difference between a guy who has peaked as a winning CAT2 and a guy they can take to a winning PRO. Gavi clearly passed these tests. Cangratulations Gavi and Good Luck!
they obviously wanted the best (CRCA CHAMP, Spring Series Stage Winner, Killington Stage Road Race 3rd), most potential (24 y.o.), NYC rider. Gavi fits the bill…team work, dedication, growth, and NYC. Now must rise/ride to the occasion, which I have no doubt he will…
GO GAVI!!!
Dont forget us little excitables Toto/Tata wannabees!!!
stage winner!
perhaps Cycling Reporter can fill us in on why they wanted him
Do you want to know why Garmin wanted him? CR can tell you that
Will we be getting more info on the team’s race schedule and sponsors? They racing Cervelos or Gavilans?
don’t forget Zui Hanufasa, who was the very first to give Gavi a chance…
fathead plugging himself lmao :0)
no.
You don’t what your talking about. Firstly, the term “kid” coming from you is condescending…Gavi is a young man, married, very responsible, and talented on the bike.
Secondly, he’s no “lame cat-2 to pro.” Gavi has been cat-1 for at least 3 seasons now. He’s won the overall Best Young Rider competition (white jersey) at international races, been on the podium at the uspro crit finals in Vegas (and that crit result is incredible because he’s a 136 pound climber/breakaway rider tackling the best US sprinters), and rubbed shoulders with Gilberto Simoni and other top pros in races like the Vuelta Telemex.
The local stuff is just training and time filling…and perhaps a bit of loyalty on his part to his racing roots and community…which it seems like creates jealousy in the washed up set…If you don’t know about his racing history, it’s because you are probably not invited to the races he gets invited to, in which case your opinion does not matter.
Lastly, Big Shout Enrique (Cubi) Cubillo. He’s the one who first put his time and money behind Gavi and a lot of us wher we never raced a bike at all…A lot of people want to gling to the champions, but very few want to do what it takes to develope them. Big thanks to Enrique for taking a shot.
Your an idiot, I agree with all you say about Gavi, but post below that you are so furiously debating was not targeting Gavi. I did not write it but I read it…
Read it and come back to us … its about “Craddock” Gavi’s new teammate. Good god!
Good luck to you Gavi, we’ll be rootin’ for ya!
(And please don’t pull a Chodroff.)
how the fuck did this happen?
im learning that when posting on the internet there is only room for thumbs ups and smiles…gavi’s a good friend, any hint of negativity gets the fangs:) misreads aboud…happy riding all

Come out and support the riders and teams that won their categories in the CRCA, and watch Dan perform “Spiderman”!!!
Thanks

if you want to be pro you need to be really good or know the right people. i would suspect the latter.
The team will be riding Cervelos, unless Gavilan can make a better deal…
