Cambridge, NY – Organizers of the 2011 Tour of the Battenkill announce the opening of registration for the 2011 Pro/Am event to be held on Sunday, April 10, 2011 in Cambridge, NY. Registration for the Pro/Am opens online on Tuesday, December 21 at 7 PM EST. Registration information can be found on the event website at www.tourofthebattenkill.com.
Total registration exceeded 2,000 people for the 2010 event making it the largest sanctioned road cycling race in North America. More than 3,000 participants are expected to ride and compete over two weekends in Upstate New York’s Washington County in April.
The scope of the race grows again in 2011 with an expanded schedule of events. The Pro/Am weekend begins on Saturday, April 9 with a non-competitive Bike Marathon to benefit wounded & disabled Veterans. The 64 mile Tour of the Battenkill Pro/Am follows the next day on Sunday, April 10. Several mid-week events are planned ahead of the following weekend’s professional races. Two new events – the Cambridge Professional Criterium race to benefit regional Public Safety, and a Ride with the Pros event – are tentatively scheduled for Thursday evening and Friday afternoon, respectively. In addition, professional racers from around the world will again be participating in regional outreach events at local schools and hospitals.
The marquee event – the Tour of the Battenkill Professional Invitational for both men and women – will be held on Saturday, April 16 and is co-organized by Cycle for Health – a new charitable organization formed to combat childhood diabetes (www.cycleforhealth.org). The USA’s Caleb Fairly of Texas won the 124 mile men’s professional race in 2010 following a 2-man break with fellow American Floyd Landis of California. The women’s professional race is a new addition for 2011 and expects to draw an international field. More than 40 States and 20 countries were represented at the event in 2010.

For an extra $75, you can get the Lego 808s.
Sure $75 is not cheap but if you can afford one out-of-town race next season this should be it. If you’ve never raced Battenkill sell some blood to get there. The size of the event, the professional organization and the course should be experienced. As far as Dieter making a ton of money…he doesn’t need it since he bought a new boat, Ferrari and new house from the mint he made last year!
I like the race but there’s always a Branchbrook race that day that is only 20 mins away. 20 mins vs. 4 hours is significant. Plus I can do two race and still get about 60 miles of racing in.

the truth is, if you can afford to spend $500 on bicycle wheels – which is very cheap compared to what most local racers are on – the $75 reg to actually use those wheels for their intended purpose won’t phase you. Dieter puts on a nice event and more than enough people are willing to pay for it.
For some people, the price isn’t worth it. That’s fine. For some people, $500 is too much for an entire bicycle not to mention a set of wheels. Nobody is forcing you to do this or any other race. You have two choices, get over the price and enjoy a great race, or make your voice heard by not spending the $. Deiter, just like anyone else deserves the right to charge whatever he can get for his product – especially considering it’s not a product that you have to buy.
Did this race in 06, 07 and 08. Its a super cool race and tough competition. Most likely the most stacked race competition wise for the Masters, Cat4 -2 in the NE since everyone is amped for it and there are huge fields. My only knock on the race is the location and distance (7 hours round trip from the Metro area) and the venue kind of sucks for places to stay and eat. But then again thats why you get the cool farm roads etc. My other issue is that Dieter added too many fields. If you flat or get dropped the race becomes the equivalent of the Montauk Century with guys all over the place jumping into groups etc. Its a blast of a race but almost too big at this point. I think having 5 Cat 4, 5 and 3 fields is a bad idea. $75 is not a ton of money considering we all spend this in a week on useless bike junk, and related training equipment.
If you have any idea what is needed to stage a race like Battenkill and the costs incurred to make it the quality race it is, you would well know that neither Dieter or anyone else for that matter is making any money on this race.
Dieter does nothing but put into the sport including his own junior’s ‘Farm Team’ so any thought that he is sucking extra cash from racers is just way off base.
