Hopeful Friday 6/25/2010

So long suckers!

This is my last Hopeful Friday before leaving for the wilds of Dubuque, Iowa, where I will be re-meating and re-alcoholifying my system, and since I’m barely still present; I’m going to breeze right through this Hopeful.

There’s a CRCA race on Saturday. Plus the women’s clinic.

There’s a Kissena omnium on Sunday, and the Lucarelli & Castaldi Cup in Prospect Park.

Also on Sunday is the Campmor H2H Race # 3 – The Lewis Morris Challenge in Morristown, NJ.

And that’s it—later hosen!

The 4’s will be the last field to fill up for PP on Saturday (excluding the women, since they don’t count)

Kobe linked to a very good article in velonews by Ted King about the state of cycling in the US. The big pro races are dying, Missouri,Georgia, Philly is reduced to a day but cat races like Housatonic are thriving.
Makes you wonder about direction of a race like Harlem. As a spectator event it still is not attracting a large crowd. Is cutting back on cat races to highlight a “Pro” televised race watched by under 100 people live a good way to allocate scarce resources?

Bryan Threadlock

pro bike racing is boring to non cyclists. they’d rather watch their friends or family race.

Lorenzo Rivnut

Harlem is heading in the right direction. You need to recall that it was not that long ago when the race almost died. Since Sparta has taken over you have seen some great shows put on. It will take a little bit of time to get the crowds back.

ERgometor

Problem with “Pro” racing in the states is that with the exception of Tour of Cali, Missouri, GA, Philly and maybe Univest, most of the “Pro” racers are part time pros or elite ams. The resources should really go to the Category races since that is the bread and butter of cycling in the US.

Faux MacAskill

That’s it, I’m getting and trials bike. Looks way more fun than riding in circles around PP.

warning – Ken Harris dangerous riding

Oderigo Setscrew

I marshaled this morning. Whenever I ride its clear that there are some marshals with a lacklustre approach. If I was one of those then apologies. I tried my best to get the 250 nyrr off the road along with the 500 tri-ipodwearing-too many bars-nervous at any speed-athletes. Yes when you do the tri you are a triathlete not merely a tri-er. The marshaling system works give or take but on mornings when every single man bike nike free runner wants to hit the park at sunrise do you really think some dude with a red bib and a whistle is going to stop them taking their rightful place on the road to show off all their kit and their amazing abilities? get real. most people in this city think they are always right and always awesome. so you blow the whistle and hope the 250 lb guy will slow down go into the rec lane and not hit the oncoming stroller containing twins and fifteen assorted toys. oh yeah plus that guy is used to giving the orders so telling him is not lance and that a yellow band doesnt mean you are spectacular on your bike is a little tricky. good luck when and if you marshal. i suspect you will do a stunning job and the park will be free of everyone but the crca.

Michael Green

Riders in the A field complained about a move Ken made in crossing across the entire road to attempt blocking another rider’s path. This resulted in a second rider clipping the wheel of the cutoff rider. There were some very angry riders complaining about this move after the race. It is the kind of needless action that can cause serious injury.

Tom Internal Routing

Simply suck and CRCA needs to talk to them about where they place them – one guy hit one and took some folks out due to the weight at the bottom.

And, the guy who hit it took his eyes off the road to look at a crash on the otherside.

Seriously dangerous and stupidity mixed in there.

Sander Steerer

First of all, I am certain some marshals better than others. But today, there were way to many near misses – bikers on the course, runners on the course, truck pulling out right before Harlem Hill, just to name a few.

We don’t need “whistle blowers”, we need “marshals” to guide us to race in a safe environment.
I can ask my grandmother, if all we need is someone to stand and “blow whistle and yell”. Some time a marshal may have to leave his/her post and make an active intervention to remove danger from the course. There are many ways to do that. I have done that myself, when it is m turn.

Today, I saw marshals taking pictures, marshals talking to others, marshals sitting down.

There is NO reason a marshal should let a dump truck get on the course(before going down Harlem Hill). That was right by the short cut to the westside and a marshal was assigned. Truck was loud/visible enough for the marshal to take precaution and approach the truck to perhaps to wait a minute?

I think the club’s marshal system has a problem.
Those who race are likely to know what could lead to accidents. What to look out for. We have many non-racers who who fill in to do the marshal duty whether to make quick 50 bucks or just as a friendly favor. That’s too risky, the way I see it.

I am not attacking any one particular marshal – but my point is marshal must do more than “blowing whistle”.

Ken Harris

I have never imploded, neither in general, nor in a race, which explains my continued presence. Moreover, my trade-mark “ride at the front at 23 mph through HS with my head on backwards alley while blocking for my teammate” has never resulted in any rider touching ground, myself included.

However, I like to think that all those times I’ve gotten to the front and kept the pace steady when things got sketchy in Central Park has something to do with the utter absence of Prospect Park-like mass pile ups in CRCA A fields. Just my opinion.

Apologies to the 12 or so riders remaining in the break if I caused them distress. I began that move before I saw Taylor attacking, so the “attempted to block” interpretation is false.

Thibault Lorica

CRCA will soon announce all Park races will be replaced by networked computrainer races held in high school gyms.

Safety first.

Amine Locknut

I’m pretty sure that there was an “utter absence of Prospect Park-like mass pile ups in CRCA A fields” well before you started racing in them Ken.

Ken Harris

My opinion from the front. I’m sure other, similarly concerned, riders have done and will continue to do the same thing. I found myself as a Board member somewhat obliged. It’s my reason for doing it, regardless of the effect.

Bernardo Cable

Few things are more ridiculous than the nonsense defined by amateur racers as ‘blocking’. If you tried any of this silliness in a pro race, especially in Europe, you’d quickly find yourself in a ditch looking up confused livestock.

Ken Harris

If that is a threat, please threaten me in your native language so that I might comprehend.

Or sign your name.

CJ fan

Let Ken and others do the ‘fact check’. In the meantime, can we do some ‘fat check’ on CJ?

wheel Stiff

is any way to see top 10 place in C field???…i see is top 10 in A field…top 8 in B field….top 2 C filed….is possible???? thanks…

Hugo Bearing

Yes, Bernardo speaks from experience in the Belgian Kermesse circuit. He witnessed it firsthand. Well, actually, he witnessed it firsthand while he was working on the farm as the peloton rolled by. At the time, he had his hand lodged in ol’ Bessie’s fistula, but that’s not important right now.

Joe Brennan

Junior, Cat 4 and Cat 5 fields are sold out. There are a couple of spots left in the women’s and Cat123 fields. registration ends at 5PM. No “day-of-race” entries.

Results will be posted here Sunday night.

Jules Plug

No one cares about a C field in a training race. If you want the guarantee of seeing your name on the crca website, win the race, or upgrade to the A’s or B’s and place top 10.

Stop whining.

wheel Stiff

woaoooo “no body cares about C field”…..hahaha the “tour the france riders” talking…..hahaha the “pro-park peloton guys”…hahaha what a shame….hehe, they do 3 or 4 more laps in “the park”, and think they are riding a Europe classic hehehe….this is funny….

Kevin Tubie

Everybody does sketchy stuff in a race once in a while and most people do sketchy stuff to gain position or attack on a downhill or reel back their own teammates in a break. Even if people did percieve that move as sketchy there was good intention behind it and I dont think Ken would make up some strange excuse as to the reason behind his move after the fact to save face. Not his style….

Ps. even though I’m defending him now his old helmet did indeed look as silly as his handlebars.

Dylan Rivnut

Lap times for the A race were fast. Lots of sub 13 min laps.

The way Ken rides, he avoids riding close to others, thus I doubt he’d purposely do something dangerous. He avoids danger so much during races he probably eats twice the wind of everyone else. That said those bars are for a clown bike.

Jacopo Brakepad

one righteous dude; sanctimonious too. but he’s strong and does a lot of good for local riding – track handlebars notwithstanding

whine and cheese

i’ve come to realize i feel the same way about racing as i do about smoking pot. that is, i love doing it. i just hate the people i have to do it with.

why? because many of you epitomize what the greater society thinks of road racers–that they’re a bunch of whiny fags.

Justin Reid

Anyone who knows Ken knows he’s an intense guy – maybe even (and I’d say this to his face if I wasn’t on the other side of the Atlantic) a little weird. He’s also incredibly strong and a selfless team mate. When we rode on the same team Ken’s only mantra was “what can I do to help the team win?” – In the 3’s often the best advice was “ride off the front and win it yourself” – often he did. A casual conversation with Ken once about helping the club involved him saying “what can I do to help the club?” – My reply “run for President” – 2 weeks later he ran and along with Mike Green and at the time Ted Neu really helped the club move on from that awful TT accident and get back on good terms with the Central Park conservancy. He rides with intensity and integrity, never as far as I could recall with malice or unthought through aggression. Ken’s worst case scenario would involve him causing a crash or physical harm to another rider. Lay off the guy, or address it to his face.

cycle jerk

ken didn’t get a warning for being a jerk. he got a warning for an abrupt move across the road that was taken as dangerous. he apologized and everybody is fine. this has nothing to do with him personally. nobody said he doesn’t ride hard.

Biff Crosby

…is our Jens Voigt. If we had more riders like him, races would be less tactical douche-fest, more pure suffer-fest–as they should be. And we’d all be the stronger for it.

Baptiste Threadlock

Anyone who puts in two minute pulls in a breaks gets a pass in my book. Heck, for half the amount of work KH does, he could walk around all day slapping grandmothers and still get off with a verbal warning.

fan club

what happened today at prospect? heard there was a crash at the finish. probably because KH wasn’t stringing out the field.

Guillaume Downtube

The man known as Ken Harris holds a world hour record.

Chew on that one, excitable comrades.

Now go back to your cubcicle cat 4 wet dreams.

Matteo Brakepad

yeah…after a 20+ mile breakaway right from the gun consisting of Stephan Dioslaki, Nikolai Masluk (both of Team Metra) Jared Bunde, Sean of champion sys, and Horrace Burrows was caught, there was a crash during the finishline sprint. It was all together with the exception of 2 guys who had a 15 second lead. The field was sprinting for 3rd. The crash happened approx 15 guys in and I think 4 guys went down (pretty hard). Not sure who got all the top places but here’s what I got:
1st Melioto Heredia
5th Gavin Robinson
6th Stephan Dioslaki
7th Mark Light
8th Jermaine Burrows.
Please fill in the blanks if you know them. Also post the link for photos & the u-tube video of the crash.

to police, but the riders who use the jogger’s lane to move up during primes and finishes are going to cause an accident with a jogger, and the fallout will not be pretty. there were too many close calls this morning. at one point, a rider had the audacity to yell at a runner to get out of the way. the jogger wasn’t amused.

Cece Ergopower

actually there was a pretty bad crash involving a jogger last year where a rider went down during the sprint and hit the jogger breaking his ankle. the jogger happened to be a lawyer too, oops. but the rider claimed not to be in the jogger lane before he went down.

at the very least there have to be lots of cones (too many to easily rider around) in the last 1K

Titouan Ferrule

cones look nice and make it seem that the race director has taken care of potential problems but they are unforgiving and can causes crashes. nothing like nicking a cone and causing a pile up in the joggers lane or anywhere

Axel Saddlesore

I don’t get for the life of me why some don’t see it.If you continue to do stupid shit like use the joggers lane then the odds will eventually prevail.
Then racing in the park will be a memory,do you really think the parks dept. HAS to let us hold races?
Also why ride so close to the joggers lane?Dont be stupid all your life.

sophist

ok but they only cause crashes because people do stupid shit and try to go where they shouldn’t. imagine the cones were a curb or metal barriers – you have a 0% chance of staying up when you ride into one of those, and yet people still do stupid shit and crash. sprinting in bike races is dangerous.

Paolo Ferrule

The Prospect races are out of control. The weekly crash toll makes cycling look like a stupid sport.

Local Racer

It’s the weekly crash toll in the 123 race that’s insane. Maybe if the promoters actually followed through and banned the dumb dumbs that take risk and put us all in danger then things would get better.

I also think that although Charles races are awesome, making leader jerseys, sprint points and King of the hill points makes the races although local very high value and are taken more seriously then a training race. With that being the case the concurrences for not obeying the rules or taking unnecessary risk should be greater.

Henry Fco

There are many kind of people whom used the lane: 1- people who get afraid of other cyclist getting to close and there fore they use the jogger’s lane to avoid a “crash”.
2-cyclist that want to pass one slower cyclist while the right lane is moving faster( go to the right lane then)
3rd- people who wants to move foward at the end or in a sprint.(feeling strong afer not doing anything)
4th-people who just feel safer there(stupid).

I suggest that if you slow, go to the middle or the non jogger’s lane side of the road, people can’t pass you there.
,also if you want to move foward do it by the Temple where there is a clear between the joggers and the road. also let make the field smaller.
I also noticed that the only people giving compalints are the kissina guys, either because they are not afraid or just they cry a lot. The thing is that the jogger;s lane is a issue we all have to address, enforce and follow if we want to avoid a fatality or just loose the only park where we can race.
Pd : i got pushed bya bigger guy to the JL. I raised my hand to apologized to other cyclist and moved foward. I lost 10 places, but SAFETY FIRST!

Leon Wave Ring

yeah – but unfortunately, as we all know, racing and crashing are synonomous. PP races are extremely smooth, well run efficient events. We all need to give credit and thanks to the promoter & Charlie for making it such a huge success. The fact that they sell (and sell out for that matter)on such a consistent basis is testimony to how awesome the races are. PP races are no more or less prone to crashes than any other races. (They are however run much better. We all need to keep in mind the crash rate relative to how many racers there are.) It only makes perfect sense that when we enter other races with only half the number of entrants that there are less or no crashes. Its simple arithmetic. I’ve done the P123 PP races just about every time they’re on and I’ve never once crashed. Here’s a tip…stay near the front at the end of the race. This serves a dual role…you’ll place in the money AND you’ll avoid crashes. Hey…take it from me, it works…I’ve been there and done it week after week after week after week. It hurts to go anerobic but it hurts a whole lot less than doing a swan dive into the asphalt.

Faux MacAskill

good idea. in addition, if one uses the rec lane to their advantage, it is an automatic suspension for the rest of the year from PP races. riders forced in to the rec lane should neutralize themselves and consider their race over.

Recco Axle

Everyone staying near the front at the finish in the end of the race is why there are so many crashes. It’s compact and slow and everyone trying to accelerate up to the front is why it’s dangerous.

All it takes is one maniac to cause the crash. The shorter Major Taylors rider was riding dangerous Sunday. So was one of the Innovation riders who was riding in the joggers lane the whole race. When you see people taking crazy risks, call them out or teach them a lesson. Otherwise they will make it dangerous weekend after weekend.

Prospector

First of all, yes, Charlie runs a tight ship, and we all owe him thanks. But on the other issues, I agree with that last couple comments – self-policing is really the best thing we can do, and having more officials close to the finish might be a good idea, as well.

I have no documented evidence or anything, but I strongly doubt that the “crash rate” at Prospect isn’t higher than other courses. The crashes might be partly related to how many guys are in the field, but it isn’t only that. The course is completely unselective, and despite how proud Will S. is that he completed a race that averaged over 27 mph, it’s really, really easy to stay in the field in PP. So it’s a fast-moving, huge field, and no one gets dropped. At the end, as we all know, all the out-of-shape guys who would never last 45 miles on a course with corners or hills are suddenly convinced that they are Robby McEwen. The advice to “stay at the front” is plainly silly, because that’s exactly what all these guys are trying to do. If you are strong enough to take wind and stay up front, good for you, but if you aren’t, then “staying at the front” means fighting for wheels, leaning on guys, and so on. It’s sketchy, but that’s the nature of it. If you really want to be safer, go for a break and don’t contest the bunch kick. Sprinting is risky business, and more so on a fast, easy course.

Vespaciano Neck

the innovation riders seem to have a particular problem staying out of the rec lane. one guy just kept riding in it for no particular reason a few weeks ago. wasn’t moving up, wasn’t avoiding anything. just getting better view. did it 3-4 times. got yelled at, did it again.

Mehdi Headset

1. How about posting a few signs around the course, and in particular in the finishing straight that states there is a bike race and to request that non-racers keep to the inside (joggers lane) with a BIG ARROW. It will be ignored by many, but might help.
2. Lets put video cameras on the helmets of the moto’s facing backwards to video the races. Even if you can’t see anything in the film, the “policing” could help.
3. Video the finish from 200-300m out and enforce violations.
4. Hold mandatory “sprinting” clinics for CRCA races at least.
5. Pray.

fact checker

Hey, let’s spend money on a bunch of stuff that we know won’t work.

Sigh.

It’s pretty simple. A follow motorcycle and DQ riders who violate the rule. But that costs money as well. It’ll solve the problem, or at least get rid of the offenders.

Vespaciano Tracknut

Dangerous 4 years ago and still dangerous. Yet all the guys on this board today complaining will be back there next week. Easy solution, dont race PP and save yourself some skin and sleep a bit later.

Romain Flange

wanna have a safe race at Prospect? attack, or set up your teammate. Back off the sprint if it’s not strung out.

PP is for sure safer than Floyd (or Harlem!) and no worse than CP. If you want to eliminate all risk then take a spin class.

Recco Axle

I think the issue is the one or two people that take crazy, unnecessary risks or do really stupid dangerous moves. Of course we could all find something safer to do. That point is a non-point.

Lucarelli Castaldi Lawsuit

the at least 1 Innovation rider in cat 4 has complete disregard for the rules of racing. he just went nto the joggers lane whenever he felt like it. i think his number was 199.

On the 2nd sprint prime, I watched as a Kissena rider right in front of me moved into the joggers lane, jumped up 10 spots to the front, and then tried to sprint for points. despite this, he still didn’t score. pretty weak.

Chris Yack

that was me…I thought I was threading the needle on that one…I thought I was “grazing” the white line… If I in fact used the lane to move up, it was not my intent. As far as not scoring points = weak…very weak indeed. If there is a next time, please call me on it during the race as I am amenable. I have led out many of the cat IV races at Prospect this year…including Sundays with the sole intent of keeping the sprint safer for everyone involved.
Chris

Luchino Chamois

The real solution is to Charlie to take action and ban offenders. There are complains to official and promoter about jogger lane violations every week. THEY JUST DON’T CARE.

Ryan Kevlar

Week after week Innovations riders and some guys with Dominican Republic on their asses enter and use the joggers lane without any regard for rules or safety of peds. week after week everybody yells at them, makes note of their numbers and report/complain to Charlie. He passes the buck to the officials and nobody does a damn thing about it-blah, blah, blah. Charlie should save the little song and dance at the start of the race and start suspending the dickheads from his races and everybody will heed the warning.

PP racing...

The man speaks the truth. When my out of shape, over the hill ass can get around PP and still be at the front for the 1/2/3 sprint it shows just how easy that race is. Problem is always the same, regardless of whether or not a split happens there are 30 – 40 morons sprinting way over their heads trying for minor placings. Most of them suck. The little Major Taylor guy face planting in the pictures is but one example of out of control, overly aggressive, limited ability riding. Every week he (along with another 40% of the field) show blatant disregard for the safety of other riders and park users. Jogging lane violations, bike etiquette violations, etc. and in the case of the Polish mullet whipping it out and taking a leak on the ‘downhill’ which is a violation of basic taste and decorum.

I agree with the other posters that have suggested Charlie put marshalls along the finish straight starting 500M out and show no mercy with DQ’ing.

Guido Fork

Nothing like a few results to pull out the whining about things that every team does. Take your ass-whipping like a man, here’s a tissue.

Stan Clamp

That’s a very revealing comment, Guido Fork. If Innovation’s approach to racing is “it’s OK to cheat as long as others are doing it too,” well, that explains a lot, doesn’t it?

PP

known guys flaunt the rules. I’ll say it….Gavin Robertson, Wilson Vasquez, Matteucci of BVF have all placed this year in PP races when they moved up and or started to sprint from the rec lane in the last straight starting at the temple.

PP

All Charlie has to do is satnd near the parking lot entrance with a pad and write down the numbers of the idiots in the joggers lane.

You are all dickbags

during a PP race is the lamest thing anyone can do. Two weeks in a row. Different Assholes.

Henry Fco

the Rec Lane is not a Dominican Issue. One Dominican guy was suspended withouth warning when one of the top places guys get warning every week. If we want to adress the situation, let do it face to face and not here. EVERYONE has used the lane at some point, but you want to make an example with the non english speaking dominicans. we are not the only one using it, before we got here there were people using it and not getting DQ. The REc lane is a everyone issue, Please Don;t blame Dominicans.

dumbfounded

how the HELL do you get the idea that PP is safer than floyd!? there is a high speed crash every single week at prospect. i know there was a bad wreck at floyd recently, and god knows i wouldn’t want to crash on that “pavement,” if you can call it that, but personally, i’ve never even been close to crashing there. it’s easily the safest venue in the city (the approach on flatbush avenue notwithstanding).

and why oh why would anyone stick up for innovation on the grounds that “every team does it”… no, most of us do not.

Romain Flange

off the top of my head I can think of at least 3 crashes resulting in broken bones at floyd this year. only 1 that I know of in PP.

but they are both plenty dangerous, for different reasons.

9-+-9=_9

“PP is for sure safer than Floyd”

agree w/ 4:02 … that statement is beyond dumb. FBF is safest race around, bar none.

recreational cyclist

there is one innovation guy, and i don’t know if he’s dominican or not, but he rarely LEAVES the rec lane. he may actually believe that he is a jogger.

Jane Hammer

if you’re going to call someone out sign your name. i’d like to know who not to ride behind next race when you get hooked going past the finish line after the first lap.

Pope Johan the Magnificent

Those Dominicans, they talk fast and ride fast.

Members of Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth, not so much.

Vespaciano Neck

The innovation guy I see in the rec lane, is definitely not winning races. I think it’s the same guy “recreational cyclist” is referring too. It’s not jealousy, it’s not wanting to lose PP as a venue. We all yell at him. I need to learn spanish.

Nicolas Seatmasticator

Kissena riders call out rec lane violations because we know what the impact would be if the permit gets pulled. It is entirely selfish. We like our races, we like to have races in our backyard. Why wouldn’t we be concerned about others screwing it up for the whole community?

I’ve called out riders, even teammates for rec lane violations, all because I’d rather have races than not. Anybody who is concerned about keeping racing available close to home would do the same.

to I meant 345

so you can get taken down by some excitable Cat 1 that thinks PP is the world championships.

I wish you signed your name so I’d know who to punch in the head.

Antonio Bushing

Using the rec lane is cheating.

Rosie Ruiz, well known for being disqualified for cheating in the Boston Marathon, was thrown out in New York for taking the subway close to the finish line.

thanks for owning up. others should follow your example. btw, you were in the rec lane and not threading the needle, that’s why you were able to move up so easily for the prime. i tried shouting, but you couldn’t hear, and later on, i wasn’t sure exactly which kissena you were as there were many in the field. cheers

I’m easy to find…I’m the only guy on a polished titanium Bianchi. I will keep said Bianchi out of the rec lane.

Stop your whining like a bunch of little girls. If you see a rider in the rec lane, report them to the race director after the race. There is no way the RD and officials can see all infractions. Unless you reported the incident and the RD did nothing about it, you have nothing to complain about.

Yack or Yak?

Call Out The Douchebags.

I am reporting rec lane infractions to the race director- and guess what? Nothing ever gets done – even on repeat offenders like the douche in the Dominican kit in the Cat 4 race. 2 races in a row now.
