Hangover 4/19/2010

Movin’ on up

It must be spring—as you can hear, if you listen closely—the rattling of the keyboards as they maniacally tap out the magic word: U-P-G-R-A-D-E.

At the CRCA club race, Marcus Dahloff of BH-Garneau won the A race, Greg Waggoner of Sid’s won the B race and Kristin Lotito of Houlihan-Lokey/Sanchez won the women’s race. Results are here.

At the Kings County Challenge at Floyd Bennett Field, Ken Harris of Adler attacked early and won from a group of two. In the cat 4 race, Leszek Sniadowski of Organic Athlete had the temerity to win a race he entered. In the Masters 40+, Dennis Schwandter of Team HP won form a break of four. In the cat 5 race Sean Smith of Champion Systems Racing attacked early and tried to join the 123 field, but had to settle for winning the cat 5 race. Results and recaps are here.

At Bethel’s final weekend on Sunday, Greg Olsen of Adler, known for it’s ability to race a smart race, won the the Pro/123 race. Robert Sweeting of Team Globalbikewon the overall title. Ann Marie Miller of Houlihan-Lokey/Sanchez won the women’s race and the series title. In the cat 3/4 race Chad Dalles of IRSMEDIC/Berlin Bike/Best Cleaners took the win. Akira Sato of EXPO/Superior Energy won the overall title. In the masters 45+ Stephen Gray of IRSMEDIC/Berlin Bike/Best Cleaners took first place. John Funk of Cycle Fitness won the overall title. Freshly upgraded Sean Smith of Champion Systems Racing won the cat 4 race on a solo break—making it two wins in two categories in two days for Sean. Denis Adiletti of Bethel Cycle won the overall. In the cat 5 race 1, John Kladis of Tarmac Cycling won, while Edinilson Da Silva of Navone Studios won the second Cat 5 race and the overall. Results and race recaps are here.

No results are posted for the Rahway Crit yet, but reports say that Marcus Dahloff of BH-Garneau won the cat 3 race, giving him two wins in two days on the weekend.

The Spring Series TT was held, but no results are posted as of this morning, you can check the (boar teat-esque) twitter for information.

At the Pro Tour of the Battenkill, Caleb Fairly of Holowesko Partners wins over a Pennsylvania local named Floyd. Pavel Gonda of BH-Garneau finished 14th on the day.

Surely there most be someone else who would want to promote the spring series. While it certainly is a tough gig promoting races it also has it’s perks. And you can’t get a pass with “it’s a thankless job” when you screw up aspects that other promoters get correct. You simply can’t screw up TT results so bad that they’re unusable and expect people to say “No worries, it’s a thankless job. We get it.” Anthony insisted on including a TT to change the dynamics of the spring series, but didn’t allocate the necessary time or resources to see that it was handled properly. As a result the outcome of the series is likely to be altered. End of the world? No, of course not. But guys train and spend their money to race. He wants to have not a collection of individual races, but a series. He wants his series to have a certain prestige and to be taken seriously. Having results is a reasonable expectation. From his website: The most exciting race series in New York. That excitement shouldn’t be lining up each week wondering what will go wrong. Obviously much of what goes wrong in the parks is beyond a promoters of control. As was pointed out last week it’s part of the charm of racing in New York. It is an issue though when the promoters lack of foresight, knowledge, or attention to detail starts to alter or nullify the outcome of races.

Noe Tubie

i don’t get VD. posting results, at least 10 deep, is probably the easiest part of the whole enterprise.

Guccio Steerer

, honest and articulate critique. Bravo and I agree 100%

Now prepare to get flamed by local trolls and pond scum.

Florian Compliant

The TT problem this week is more than not posting results – they fucked up the results so monumentally there may never be results. See the comments in the 4-16 “Hopeful Friday” for more flavor of the day.

Pro Spring

I don’t understand why people pick on AVD. It’s hard to be a promoter. I heard he sacrificed his dog to a pack of wolves to get them off of the TT course. I mean really. You people are thankless.

Schbalz

What did you think was going to happen?

I’m assuming you’ve been around a while. But, even if you’ve only been around this year, if you did any SS scratch races, or read comments on this site since the beginning of the SS, you (and all others) would’ve had ample clues that the SS TT was increasingly headed for disaster on a number of levels.

I know what you think you should’ve gotten for your entry fee/what a TT promoter’s responsibilities are. But, it’s your fault for thinking that suddenly the TT was going to be an ideally run race after being witness to the various fiascos that characterize the SS in general.

Carmen BoohRahNah

Take him to small claims court. It’s easy. He won’t show and you’ll get the default judgment.

Yoram Patashnik

Tremendous breakthrough by Pavel. Did the BH guys know he was that good? Zmolik also did well and the winner Caleb Fairly rode for CRCA/Sakonnet.

Baldo Ziptie

Perhaps the less than perfect promoters should visit Bethel Series just once. No drama, happy usacycling official, results all quick and neat – and don’t think that something that smooth doesn’t come with a lot of preparation and planning.

Lorenzo Rivnut

MCA, AKA AVD, owns the spring series, so someone else can’t just take over promoting it. All races have issues at some point or another. Since the spring series is so popular and so many people want it to continue but want it to be better run, why not do something about it? What you can do is approach AVD and let him know that you want help make the series better. Criticizing the race on this forum is not going to make the series any better.

Siebe Lorica

Its SO SIMPLE — Here is what one of us should be willing to do — literally go to the counter when he pays out, write down teh top 20 results and post here or on bikereg.

The fact that the guy doesn’t post results is assinine….I totally agree, that is the easiest part of the whole thing.

Racers like results — it matters, all of you guys who say “you know where you placed”…that is a naive comment.

There is satisfaction in results – plain human nature.

Andy

Take a cellphone pic of the results and email to me. I’ll gladly post. If you’re handy with html I think you can post pics in the comments too.

Baptiste Skidmark

Van Dunk has all of your times, up there in his head. When he’s ready to release them into the world, he will tell them to you. Until then, namaste

Kyllian Skidmark

This isn’t about posting results. This is about the fact that there are no results. He can’t figure them out.

Saddle Sore

Bethel v. AVD’s Spring Series
No contest.
Bethel is a very well run race series; less expensive (though you do have to pay for gas), safer circuit with no runners or dogs, quick results and nice race write ups. Indoor registration and concession stand was a nice plus this year as well. Oh and photos and video of all races very soon after the race.
Expand your horizons and carpool to CT next spring.
The only was SS improves is if we no longer put up with it.

Lorenzo Rivnut

There is no reason why someone could not promote another spring series type race. You should start by getting in touch with the parks department to see what their permit requirements, and fees, are. Then you need to line up 45+ marshals. Then line up some officials, moto and regular, and you are all set. You have to put up a lot of cash that could be a total loss if you have to cancel the race, but if the race goes off there is potential to make money.

Siebe Lorica

No – it is about results.

The 4/4/10 spring race has 3 sets of photos, 2 sets of videos….I dare you to find results?

Kyllian Skidmark

The logical outcome from an AvD standpoint here is that he cancels the results, and offers everyone a free race later in the year. Meaning some joke in November and he keeps all the entry and prize money.

Training Races

Why are we crying over TRAINING RACES !!!! Van dunk races are TRAINING RACES who cares about results. If you collected your prize money on that day who cares about if he post results. If you didn’t place top 10 or top 7 who cares its ONLY A TRAINING RACE!!!!

Siebe Cage

There’s no such thing as a training race. A thirty dollar race is a thirty dollar race, whether you think I should give a shit or not. If you think guys who paid to do a TT shouldn’t be pissed that there are no results you’re a tool.

Carmen BoohRahNah

Just don’t do them. It’s simple.

People whine and whine every year. And people keep doing them.

Training Races

If you fell he’s a bad promoter don’t give him your money. You could go to NJ,CT,RI to race and and see your results posted on BIKEREG.com the next day. If your not going to do that then stop complaining.

Bill Gates

Why not get your inner dork on and organize a new Spring Series that will include internet-based computrainer racing?

Results will not only be available, they’ll be real time for all to see! No crashes, no bike tossing, no public urination.

1st place series winner will receive a month supply of freeze dried meatloaf.

Cynic

99% chance these are the same people:

-People who are on here saying that you shouldn’t care about the results of the TT because it’s a training race and is therefore non-competitive

-People who were on here saying that it was totally cool for Sean Smith to go out front of the local 5 fields because bike racing is ultra-competitive

Lapo Rim

hey asshole, if sean smith goes off the front, you go with him. he’s teaching you how to race you cat 5 moron.

Robbe Tarmac

Pavel, great results!
AXA team, also awesome!

Greg Olsen, way to represent CRCA with a win at Bethel
Lezcek(Lance!) great win at FBF

Keep winning NYC racers!

Training Races

Why worry about the next man/woman results.Who cares about Sean Smith or The Organinc guy results you wasting energy keep talking/writing about them. Yes Van dunk races are training races its not like a Tour of Sommerville or a Iron Hill crit etc those are consider races if you know it or not.Give it a break already just ride your bike. Have a nice day

Guillaume Fork

For the record, he rode for the CRCA/Sakonnet U25 team a few years ago. He is a huge talent. Glad to see he is finally producing big results.

Rubber Hood

Very well organized. You can buy coffee and read cycling magazines on a couch if you want to hang. Race twice, low entry fee, no registration lines, starts on time, good prizes, results posted deep and quick. Lots of primes and decent prize money. You can’t compare to park races.

On a different note Lezcek has become a loser in my opinion and officials should step up to the plate and upgrade his old Polish Organic ass. It’s clear he won’t do it himself.

Totto Rim

Cool — 1:08 you just stick to your sofa and those Connecticut races, since everyone looks exactly like you they probably don’t mind a casual slur like you just threw out.

Rinaldo Clearcoat

LSniad is fine. He raced 3/4 FBF last year which included masters and was competitive, not dominant. He’s racing “his category”. The category system breeds unrealistic discontent. Category racing is not about sport, it’s now only about entry fees. It was invented to protect all concerned by separating racers of various speeds, but those lines are blurred these days at the front and back of every field.

Oldish Racer

I dont know any of these guys (Lezek or whatever his name is or this mtn racer from Sids). What I do know from years of racing BMX, Mtn, Road and CX is that there are always super talented guys that come out of nowhere and dominate every field (Pavel Gonda, Prensky, Bezdek, Riffelmacher, Evie Stevens). These guys just have bigger engines than most of us due to good genetics or their past experience (crew, cross country).

Then you have guys that plug along and get better with time. Guys that used to get dropped in Cat 4 races are now Cat1s and 2s and riding well (this takes years). Dont get wrapped up in whos doing what. Guys who dominate will shoot up the categories. Guys who decide to stay a cat 4 forever will ultimately get passed by 4s that steadily improve and upgrade. You can only get so fast racing Cat4 park races.

Enjoy your bike, race when you want and do your best to beat these guys. 99% of the time, there will always be someone out there faster than you.

Noe Tubie

the big man sits around playing with his kids, drinking beer and eating pierogies all day. if he cats up, he might have to start training.

Rubber Hood

Was it old, Polish, organic or ass that offended you?

I think his blatant disrespect for the spirit of competition is much more offensive.

Gabin Saddlebag

Hey tough guy why not say it to his face some time. But please tell me when you’re going to do it so I can be ringside.

ditto

might i suggest you go to your boss, or some other co-worker, and say something about their “old black ass”

Andreas Threadsock

Spirit of fair competition means that you compete, not sit back and expect to be handed a win. Leszek is one of few guys I see each race that is coughing his lungs out, doesn’t sit in for the sprint and instead makes each of us better for racing with him. Tell us please, are you the guy who makes competition happen or one that competition makes into a complainer.

MikeP

I don’t know about other racers but I’m in Cat 4 to work hard and gain racing experience. Every race I’ve been in with Lance has been a learning experience and made me stronger. He has beaten me 5 times and I’ve gotten the best of him once. I always put out a huge effort when I’m in the break with him or trying to mark him in the field. Do I cry when he beats me at the end? No. I’ll keep trying to attack him and figure out a way to win. When I get my points I’ll move up. If he comes up with me, great. If he decides to stay in 4, the new racers there should thank him for making them work hard.

That being said, it seems the people willing to complain on nyvelocity far outnumber the of people willing to get in a break or chase a break that involves Lance. Go figure.

Adam Rivnut

from zmolik on crca.net about pro/am battenkill. would be interested to get his point of view on the real one.

Dave Deutsch

5 present snd former CRCA members in top 30 at Battenkill.

Caleb Fairly – Sakonnet – winner
Pavel Gonda – BH Garneau – 14th
Dan Zmolik – AXA
Mike Mathis – AXA
Andy Guptil – Sakonnet

It wouldn’t hurt for the readers of this site to spend a moment to read this interview of David Millar.
http://bicycling.com/blogs/sittingin/
An excerpt…

We’d just done Flanders and ripped Flanders to pieces at the end, but we were like club teammates who had just helped each other at the weekly race. It’s the same sensations! We were just fucking fucked gibbering, but it could have been at the local crit race, you’d still have the same thing. The level you ride at might change, and if you’re very lucky like me, eventually you might end up sitting at the edge of the road at the barriers of the Tour of Flanders. But you’re just a bike racer like any other.

http://bicycling.com/blogs/sittingin/

Taddeo Crank

if i hear some dork mention they had great “sensations” during a race in central park or a muffin ride to wherever, i’m gonna puke all over them. then i’m gonna kick ’em in the shin. how’s that for sensations?

Rubber Hood

First of all I meant to insult Leszek. He is old, he is Polish, he rides for Organic and he is an ass. You bringing skin color into the equation, and a person of authority that controls my pay is not the same. I would say something like “You are looking particularity healthy my fine Polish superior”

Unlike the other talented riders that some here are calling sand baggers(ie Sean Smith)when they don’t have a choice, the strong old fart stays in cat 4s. Even the promoters have no respect for him because he probably turns away some riders that would other wise race. He must have 30 points in the past year to be forced up, so it’s just a matter of time.

He will do just fine with 3s and will probably win there too, just not as often. The fact that he does not want to upgrade from a beginner category makes me think very little of him.

And hell no, I would not say it to his face, he is scary looking individual. I would say something like “Why would a handsome and strong Polish rider like yourself deprive yourself of competition?”

Bent Overmi

He was double fisting drinks at the roller races…and had nothing but time for anyone who came up to talk with him.

schmalz

Just as bringing skin color into the equation is “not the same”, or irrelevant, so is mentioning Leszek’s nationality. It doesn’t have any bearing on the discussion of Leszek’s racing style or the burning desire of some here to have him upgrade.

Jules Flange

Rubber Hood, I don’t want to engage in ethnic stereotyping, but your accent is definitely from Douchebag. Lower Doucebag, to be specific.

seriously?

Since, “He was double fisting drinks at the roller races…and had nothing but time for anyone who came up to talk with him,” that means he’s not a doper?

Bent Overmi

Deep insights 5:47

But since you brought it up, that’s the great thing about volition…sometimes you fuck it up, that’s human. And less often you sometimes man up and learn from your fuckups, that’s character.

In my opinion the guy who I talked to and shared a beer with at the roller races learned from his fuck up. Now he is not only living a life that I respect, but one that I admire. Yeah, seriously.

Carmen BoohRahNah

Every heard “Chamois time is training time”

NYVelocity time is training time

Do yourself a favor and actual recover. Ever wonder why pros can manage a couple of poorly constructed twitter posts every day? If that?

Every word you write here is time you could spend not thinking about cycling, recovering mentally and physically, and beating these guys you love to hate.

Think about it …

Gaetan Compliant

Rhaway River Crit Results for the 123 Race this past Sunday:
It was an 8 man breakaway containing:

Nikolia Masluk Team Metra
Stephan Dioslaki Team Metra
Ricky Gargulio Colavita
John Durso Liberty
Greg Batista Team Metra
Raffie Urzadowski
?????
?????

This group of 8 lapped the field…Out of that group, Nickolia got 1st, Dioslaki got 2nd, Durso & Raffie were next (not necessarily in that order) Batista got 6th…not quite sure of the other placings

ditto

I love most everything you do, but you and rubber hood don’t seem to have a grasp on ethnicity and discrimination. It is “the same”, ie, it’s analogous, perhaps not identical, but most analogies are not.

Another Old Rider

He is upgrading this week. Relax.

Now that you can breath after ranting for 3 days see if you can beat him.

Lorenzo Rivnut

leszek is not an ass. He is a decent guy. Just because you are too weak to see anything but his ass when you race against him does not make him an ass.

You have to be a pretty damn lame racer to not do a race because a particular rider will be there. You may was well hang up the bike and stay in bed because every race will have someone who can beat you.

Can you elaborate on which promoters have no respect for him?
I don’t see why a promoter would care. It’s up to USA cycling to handle categories. The promoter is just putting on the best race they can.

Matthieu Tarmac

Every time our team goes to race we know he is the man to beat so we go ATTACK his ass sometimes we succed some we dont. Instead of whining help break him. Were you in the winning break? No? So it doesnt matter anyways. And when hes a 3 he’ll be back next year.lol. Stop it please

Benedetto Brakepad

it blows me away that there is so much negativity on this site – it speaks poorly of NY Velocity team/organization – I know it is probably a select few “bad apples” – maybe NY Velocity can figure out a way to monitor the comments /get people to login w/IDs, etc … just a thought …

Giacomo O-Ring

Pathetic Cat 4’s.
You do realize that most of you were beat by a 16 year old kid at Saturday’s CRCA B race?

nebuloso

Lance is a gentleman on and off the bike. We race to have fun and meet people not to create conflicts with other fellows while we having fun.

Keano Swage

So it seems we are definitely not going to get the results after all. Oh why did I do that stupid tt.

Jane, you ignorant slut

You’re a moron. The only things on this site that are even remotely worthwhile are the cynical, asshole, hater, etc…comments. You want touchy-feely, go jack off or something.

Gilbet Davanov

I just want to make sure that somehow NYVelocity compared a “Continental UCI MTB Championship” to races in NYC’s parks.

Ok. Confirmed. Yup. That is all.

Ernesto Skidmark

That’s fine. No one was really arguing against him racing 3/4 races where he’ll have some competition. The arguement was continuing to race 4 only races.

Kyllian Skidmark

He’s going to race and win Sunday. Win the spring series overall, and then get automatically bumped to cat 2.

Kyllian Skidmark

By sponsor you mean promoter? I think Anthony is probably in hiding. But realistically, it’s Wednesday. If a system to figure out the times hasn’t been sorted out yet it seems pretty unlikely to ever happen.
