Hangover 4/12/2010

So many winners!

There were many races over the weekend, but with more winners than my daughter’s grade school bingo night (which I think is fixed—they can’t ALL win a prize!); Battenkill takes over the spotlight on this week’s hangover. Let’s have a look at the success stories in Dieter’s Technicolor Dream Fields, shall we?

Brian Jensen of Tradewind Energy/Trek Stores won the Pro/1 men’s race from a group of five, nudging out Ridgewood New York’s favorite Czech racer, Mr. Dan Zmolik of AXA Equitable. Anna Barensfeld of LadiesFirst Powered by Milton CAT won the women’s Pro/1/2 race. Pavel Gonda of BH-Garneau won the men’s 2 race from a long two-man break.

In the rainbow races, Brendan Housler of Minerva Design Cycling / GVCC won the cat 3 Black race in front of the Luzo’s duo of Miguelangel Blanco and Danny Habig. Ramon Mira de Orduna of MaxPowerCycling.com won the cat 3 Green race. In the cat 3 Women’s race, Fabienne Gerard of Fuoriclasse Racing – Discover Chiropractic won, with Alejandra Madrinan CRCA/Comedy Central-Sid’s Bikes second.

Sam Rosenholtz of Green Line Velo won the cat 5 race #2. Results are here.

At the Spring Series race on Sunday in Central Park, I can confirm that Mark Alden of Blue Ribbon/Translations.com won the Masters race, other results are unconfirmed, but I assume that the fellow from Innovation Bike Shop rocking an imaginary baby is doing so out of joy, and not out of the joy of parental pantomime. Check here for 140 character’s worth of accomplishment at a time.

And finally, for future reference, Yann Post has been ruled a Richard for tossing out the Roubaix spoiler, the agreed-upon NYVC etiquette has always been no spoilers until the race has been broadcast on TV. I would’ve erased the offending spoiler, but I was keeping a strict internet radio silence yesterday, in fact, I was so strict that I have forgotten some of the internet. But be sure to check out my band’s new myspace page, I just put it up and I’ve got some great gif animations on there.

awesome race, course, and weather. ups to dieter for making it better every year. only complaint might be the need for two feed zones for a tough, but short race.

Remi Setscrew

i was dropped 3 minutes into the race when my DI2 couldn’t lift the chain into my 29 tooth cog, but in the ensuing chase, i recorded my best ever 6.5 minute power output. that to me was enough to justify the 4000 calorie pasta dinners and pancake breakfasts i had on each of the 3 days leading into the race.

time to start focusing on national age group time trial championships for the hotly contested 44 years, 27 days – 44 years, 185 days group. carbo loading for the trip to the wind tunnel next month – will be great to get away from these $%^ing spoiled kids, JK, LOL!!! after that, gotta shave weight for green mountain. (replace my shattered zipp 202’s, etc.)

Quentin Liner

He’s been racing for 5 years and entered the Cat5? He must feel great knowing that he beat a bunch of noobs. Total sandbagger.

Schbalz

Did anyone else hear AVD at the beginning of the race Sunday a.m.?–that someone was caught urinating in public, that it was the last straw with the parks department, and as a result, no more races for AVD in CP?

Concerned Master

1J7. Maximum Field. Entries shall be accepted in order of receipt by the organizer up to the field limit and subsequent entries shall be returned. The maximum field limit in any youth race or a road event exclusively for category 5 men or Category 4 women shall be 50 riders. The maximum field for a road event that includes category 5 men with other categories shall be 75.

AvD is flawed. But what’s the solution? Don’t do the races and then he’ll stop promoting them. Of course, the lack of interest at that point would likely deter someone else from taking over. At least there are races. Don’t take them so seriously and it’s just a local race to do when there is something better out there.

Gabin Chainline

he didn’t say no more races…he said it was his last warning and if anyone else got caught peeing that there wouldn’t be any more.

Schbalz

I don’t know if he was being dramatic, but he said “this is my last race in CP. Thanks guys.”

700x25

Sean Smith races open pro SS- not sure how he can feel good about such a hollow victory.

Maybe he does not have enough points to bump up…

mehi

How about if you turn a rider in, take a pic with a cell phone, you a get a free entry and the rider gets a big DQ with no refund as the rules state.

I might do that just for kicks.

Arno Limit Screw

Sean Smith has to start as a Cat 5 just like everyone else. Like others he will quickly upgrade. Don’t be a critic now…you’ll want him on your team when he’s a Cat 3 or 2.

WTF

Juniper Swamp climb 2x in the first 20 mi for the 2’s and P,1. Different from last year and not on ye ol’ dvd.

Maxence Pulley

Pissing gets you kicked out? Wow Central Park has really gone to the sissies. I recall when you could dismember a body in there, mid-afternoon, and no one cared.

Sam Dry Lube

Sean Smith was wearing a ChampSys jersey in that field. He sprinted away from the pack at the start and was not seen again the whole race. He literally solo’d all 62 miles, and beat the front selection by ~10 minutes.

I have to assume we have a situation akin to Pavel Gonda or Greg Waggoner with this guy – he has to work his way up like everyone else.

senor smith

a lot of misinformation out there about me. amusing to read though, thanks.

First, i didn’t sprint off the front at battenkill. i was cold and wanted to warm up and ramped it up to about 50% effort. no one followed so i raced solo.

No, I haven’t raced for 5 years pro SS. I’ve never even raced one event pro SS. I’ve done a handful of endurance races over the years along with some ultra-endurance road/mtb events.

Believe me when I say, I’m about the last person that wants to be in cat 5. i’ve tried two times to upgrade and have been denied each time. if anyone knows someone who can put me in cat 2 where I might see some competition feel free to go ahead.

Ridolfo Rim

Either a troll or you’re even more of a poser than the result suggests…50% effort

You only need 10 mass start races sanctioned by USCF to upgrade to Cat 4.

Adrien Limit Screw

Sean Smith was rumored to have pulled off to the side of the road, mid-race, to wrestle a wild boar with his bare hands. Shortly thereafter, a local farmer flagged him down to help rebuild the Holley carburetor on his ’76 Ford pickup truck. How he managed to have a spare pump diaphragm in his jersey pocket at the time was nothing short of amazing. Yet, he still managed to pull off the win. He’s ready for Cat 4, no doubt.

Ryan Headbadge

true. zero road points allowed even if you were to win the USA cycling MT Bike national championship as a cat 1

Mathys Stiff

24mph with the wind at your back isn’t much effort.

I’ve done 8 races and called to upgrade yet again, so shall see.

Guillaume Chainsuck

my own pov after a bunch of years racing all over the east coast and beyond: anthony is a good guy who runs a lot of local races that many of us choose to participate in, and some of us even appreciate. his races offer good (local) competition, there are a lot of them, and they mostly happen early in the season when many of us are trying to find our racing legs.
i don’t understand why so many people like to diss him here. i will be sad if he can’t run races in the park any more, or if he quits altogether.

Rinaldo Downtube

Fantastic timing job by Alan. A zillion fields and riders and he still turned it around the next day. Dieter should have had him last year.

Schbalz

Atwood should have a weekly forum on NYVelocity…like “Ask Alan”, or something. He could settle questions like the folding bike’s status in a race, upgrade issues, etc…

Lapo Rim

same guy who wrote: “Are all you NYC losers going to start sucking Pavel’s cock now? you bitches can’t race.” in the hangover thread

so who are you then?

MQ

Think I saw your wheel last week at the meat packing district. but I didnt want to say anything couse
it was with all his friends. just hanging out trying to pick up women and smoking. but I did hear this as I walked by. it said to one of his friends
NAH MY RACING DAYS ARE OVER

joe

Nobody is dissing van dunk as a person!

Just post the goddamn results is it that hard?

He is 4 weeks behind. He is screwing up the easiest part of running the series!

Amerigo Supple

The FMBs are handmade and $265 for a set. If you had any clue about the quality of a handmade Dugast or FMB you would not post such stupidity. Second, they are tubs not tubies and if you have to ask the question then you just dont get the whole FMB Dugast thing.

Finally, you will see someone in the park with them.

schmalz

Dude, I’ve totally moved on from that wheel. I don’t even think about that wheel ever. Um, where did you say my wheel was hanging out? You know, I’m just curious…

harryeyeball

I’m pretty sure I saw your Zipp front wheel hooking up with a Campy Shamal rear wheel from Long Island with a bedazzled cog-piece.

Dorian Plug

If the ss in cp has really been pissed away, this time next year how are you avd haters going to feel about the posting of results for irrelevant park races in which you didn’t place?

Long Dong Cochran

Do not Piss
Do not Diss
if you like to race
in the same place
as last 40 year
your piss must not clear
the rambles bathroom
unless the po po come too soon…

Ernesto Skidmark

First, a fixing bolt fails causing Cancellara to have to make a quick bike change during Flanders, then he is shown having to open up his rear brake during his solo in PR.

Kyllian Skidmark

Van Dunk can’t really be held responsible for the park service not clearing the road. Are you guys blaming CRC for the Tiorati bridge being out?

Van Dunk is working on the B plan. Which, honestly, isn’t a very good one. The replacement TT would go one way from about the river road entrance in fort lee to the top of the hill in Englewood where the road is closed.

He has a permit for a TT in the park, and the park service is open to a course change. That section of road obviously sees far more traffic, and it’s pretty short. It’s the spring series prologue at the tail end of the race.

He probably should have put another plan in place weeks ago rather than waiting for the week before the race. I don’t know what the permitting process is in the parks, but at such a late date could he even get a central/PP permit for the weekend? Sounds unlikely.

Complaining about the results not being posted seems like a pretty legitimate gripe. It is a series. Hard for people to care about the series when they can’t even figure out who is placed where.

joe

I have an idea…..

Cancel TT….and spend extra free time getting results up in time for the final race so everyone knows what the hell is going on as far as points.

“Some NYC/CRCA affiliated riders had superb results at the darkhorse 40. Sean Smith (Rockstar racing/Signature cycles) and Al Siebert (Nycmtb/Peak bikes) were 1st and 2nd overall cat1s, finishing 3rd and 4th overall in a field of almost 400 including some very fast pro riders. Nate Krax (Sids/Cannondale) also podiumed as 3rd place cat1 singlespeed.”

Siebe Cage

NYCSpringSeries We got approval for the time trial course. The course is a little less than 5 miles. The start and finish is in edgewater with the (cont

NYCSpringSeries …cont) turn around being in englewood. Registration is at Ross dock.

MQ

It was the meat packing district..around 2:00AM
that wheel just went bad. took wrong turn somewhere in life

alanatwood

………..but, I can’t take full credit on this one. There was chip timing there courtesy of Yellow Jacket Racing out of western NY. Without them, I’d either be dead or still compiling results for 1600+ riders (which would probably kill me anyway). Believe me, it wasn’t easy regardless; but things were light years ahead of the MCF of last year.

Looking forward to the pro race on Sunday. Anyone traveling up to watch?

Alan

Remi Setscrew

why not: every rider gets (buys) a chip or two with their race license. zip-tie the thing onto your fork at the beginning of the year, don’t even think about it again. how amazingly expensive can it be. there would be costs and logistical issues with getting the right equipment to all of the races, but on the other hand, fewer officials would be needed to figure out the finish order, and never again would 2/3 of the field be standing around after the race bitching about how they haven’t gotten their place.

i am guessing that there’s a reason this hasn’t happened yet, but especially after seeing that it worked very well at battenkill, i don’t get it…

Arnaud Torque

Organizations in Florida and Minnesota have tried this. It requires a strong central racing organization (which NY lacks) and a large group of racers who will repeated use the chips, not just twice a year. Also, the chips rarely work as well as they did at Battenkill and a photo backup is almost always necessary.

Remi Setscrew

as far as the racers’ willingness goes, that shouldn’t be the problem – make buying the chip part of the licensing process, and tell racers they’ll never see their name on a results sheet again unless they use it. follow through on that, and then missing a few precious upgrade points or usa cycling ranking points (confusing and practically meaningless, but still, we look), and before you know it, you have 99.9% compliance.

the flip-side is obviously that each race has to have the timing equipment, and therein lies more of a difficulty, i guess. but with the current state of things, and so much agita after every single race about who was in 23rd place and “why doesn’t my 35 bucks buy me a placing,” etc., it would surprise me if promoters wouldn’t buy in. promoters could have a stash of spare chips and charge 10 bucks for every guy who forgets his, and now they are probably profiting.

i’m assuming the stuff actually works – if it’s usually faulty and requires just as much work as the current method, then ok, that’s no good.

separate issue, but it would cut down on the oh-so-honorable practice of hiding in the bushes for a couple laps when the crit gets tough…

Ermanno Tarmac

Have u ever heard of Jimenez Velo Club from NJ? Club’s leader is a small dwarf known as Herb Jimenez. Riders are weak and lame in blue uniforms like Smurfs.
