umm…if this was a UCI sanctioned race, you’d have a point, but for these USAC park races, somewhere between commuting and recreational racing is where we fit, so a supped up folder is a perfect choice. Why we race on +5K machines is beyond me…;-)

Andy

Irony aside, the mother of another junior offered to give this kid a frame. Nice gesture, maybe he’ll be on a Bianchi next time you see him.

Wheelsucker

I’m assuming 1:20 is joking. It not, then it’s kinda sad that a cat 5 racing on a folding bike pisses him off.

Musta been ’cause he beat you, right?

Wheelsucker

Andy must have stepped on a magic stone in the park because that photo is from the FUTURE

Rock on, Organic Dude

Wheelsucker

1:20, hey, you sad sack of crap! ask your mama for a refund, or else sue whoever fathered you – if you have any idea who it was – pathetic a-hole

Wheelsucker

It’s a Xootr Swift. The bikes are marketed as folders that ride and handle like road bikes. That’s their particular niche in the folding bike market. I don’t own one, but considered buying when one looking for a bike I could take with me on the commuter rail. The hater at 1:20 should just STFU and train harder.

Denis

Andy, thanks for a nice shot. It was very touching that this woman offered to me a free Bianchi frame after the race (she heard that organizers were not too happy about me racing on that thing). I did not accept it though – it was a wrong size and I have two ‘normal’ carbon racing bikes almost built already (one of them also will be quite customized in order to keep photographers busy;)))

To answer the most common questions:

1. This is not a superior racing bike from the future, and I didn’t intend it to be. It’s just my commuter bike that I built to take on trips to Europe and for training purposes. it’s much heavier than your racing bike, it handles worse due to my customizations, it has only one front ring, only 8 speeds (with long cage derailleur for mountain bikes). and did you notice the bar-end shifter? The only advantage is that it allows slightly better aero position on the drops (not very comfy, but it brought me 5/6th place in FBF race few weeks ago).

2. I do not have to spin faster because bike has smaller wheels. you can compensate for this in the gearing. but the wheels have to rotate faster, hence higher rolling resistance in the hubs.

3. It’s far from the original bike (which looks more like mountain bike). The only original part is a frameset.

4. Nobody showed me yet any rule that would ban this bike from participating in our amateur races.

Cheers,
Denis

Mexico! dont bring the peloton!

I think the courage of racing and taking the challenge on a bike like that shows that the bike scene is growing in NYC thanks to the people who has been doing this regardless of all the limitations they face to organize it. We need to support people like this young man, we need to support the cycling culture, though I think the entry fee compare to the prize is not proportioned.

“it handles worse due to my customizations”

That seems like a good enough reason not use it in races. Save it for you solo trips around the Park.

You’re all looking at the glass half empty! Its the beginning of yet another racing category! Now race promoters will have the folding category, but I think the mod’s will DQ it, mods aren’t allowed in the folding category from what I heard.

Can’t wait to see what racers show up with next week!

West Coast Reader

What? Unattached, does he need it on his jersey? Or is it a real team? You NY-ers sure are ironic this weekend with the folding bike and the official Unattached jersey.

What next, the Wheel Sucker brown helmet?

Denis

To 8:18 and 7:53:
It’s not the bikes that cause crashes, it’s the riders. I spent enough time on this bike to control it at least as well as a regular one. However, any new person trying out this bike will find handling ‘worse’.
But no worries, I probably won’t be racing on it much any more. And when I do, you can always pass me, right?))

Wheelsucker

looks like foundation guy in from of crca man just tooted.

must’ve been indian food the night before…

Wheelsucker

Uh, yeah. It’s a club race. It doesn’t have a USCF permit. And no once cares. The dude is a Cat 5.

Wheelsucker

The Cat 5s care. This guy should not be permitted to ride in CRCA races or any races on this bike. He is fit enough to keep up, but on fast descents, his wheels were visibly wobbling. I don’t agree that he handles it as well as a regular bike and I tried to stay clear of this machine.

Park races do have uscf permits and insurance so yeah he can’t race the bike. It would be a liability for crca.

Wheelsucker

he rode safely enough, remember the NYVC guys that thought the park signs were for running into on the last lap…they are the real danger!

Tommy_P

Agreed. He did ride safely. I did notice him, and avoided him. Not because I felt he was unsafe, but rather felt I wouldn’t be maximizing drafting potential from him.

Wheelsucker

Denis,
Good of you to comment, and keep on racing BUT… yes, the double triangle rule keeps you from racing. Also, all you excitables making cat5 jokes, just remember that he’ll get his 10 races in on a completely different handling machine, and then join you in the 4s, never having raced on a “normal” racing bike.
