It’s a Xootr Swift. The bikes are marketed as folders that ride and handle like road bikes. That’s their particular niche in the folding bike market. I don’t own one, but considered buying when one looking for a bike I could take with me on the commuter rail. The hater at 1:20 should just STFU and train harder.

Andy, thanks for a nice shot. It was very touching that this woman offered to me a free Bianchi frame after the race (she heard that organizers were not too happy about me racing on that thing). I did not accept it though – it was a wrong size and I have two ‘normal’ carbon racing bikes almost built already (one of them also will be quite customized in order to keep photographers busy;)))
To answer the most common questions:
1. This is not a superior racing bike from the future, and I didn’t intend it to be. It’s just my commuter bike that I built to take on trips to Europe and for training purposes. it’s much heavier than your racing bike, it handles worse due to my customizations, it has only one front ring, only 8 speeds (with long cage derailleur for mountain bikes). and did you notice the bar-end shifter? The only advantage is that it allows slightly better aero position on the drops (not very comfy, but it brought me 5/6th place in FBF race few weeks ago).
2. I do not have to spin faster because bike has smaller wheels. you can compensate for this in the gearing. but the wheels have to rotate faster, hence higher rolling resistance in the hubs.
3. It’s far from the original bike (which looks more like mountain bike). The only original part is a frameset.
4. Nobody showed me yet any rule that would ban this bike from participating in our amateur races.

I think the courage of racing and taking the challenge on a bike like that shows that the bike scene is growing in NYC thanks to the people who has been doing this regardless of all the limitations they face to organize it. We need to support people like this young man, we need to support the cycling culture, though I think the entry fee compare to the prize is not proportioned.

It’s not the bikes that cause crashes, it’s the riders. I spent enough time on this bike to control it at least as well as a regular one. However, any new person trying out this bike will find handling ‘worse’.
But no worries, I probably won’t be racing on it much any more. And when I do, you can always pass me, right?))

Also, all you excitables making cat5 jokes, just remember that he’ll get his 10 races in on a completely different handling machine, and then join you in the 4s, never having raced on a “normal” racing bike.
