These people are still very involved in the USA Cycling scene:
“They say the injections were given by the U.S.A. Cycling staff, including coach Rene Wenzel, trainer Angus Fraser and, according to documents, coach Chris Carmichael.”
“VeloNews caught up with a few of the riders plus Rene Wenzel, who joins the squad this year as a director.
From Lance to Landis-Inside the AMerican Doping Controvesy at the Tour De France.
1. Bernard Sainz worked with Bernard Hinault was the first “doctor” to work with Rene Wenzel as a racer who would later coach the USA Cycling junior cycling team and the Saturn Pro Team. “There were tablets we had to take one or two hours before the race, different ones for different races. I have no doubt that the S**t I was given was probably what made me sick. I didn’t think of it in terms of doping, but later on yes. We had a bunch of tablets, one or two ampoules of liquid, and enough syringes to cover the doses outlined. There was also a substance that we were to take, one drop each day placed under the tongue.”-Rene Wenzel
2. Jiri Mainus coaching director for the United States Cycling Federation asked Wenzel if he would be interested in a coaching position.
3. Greg Strock went to the Washington Trust race in Spokane, Washington and spoke with Wenzel about his lack of form. Wenzel took him to the motel room of fellow USCF coach Chris Carmichael. Carmichael inserted the needle into the ampoule, drew some liquid, and injected Strock in the upper part of the buttocks. Strock says he was told the injection was “extract of cortisone”.
4. Greg Strock after retiring from racing to become a doctor because of a loss of athletic ability he claims was from the injections of the “extract of cortisone” was pursuing his degree as a doctor. While in pharmacology class he was studying steroids, both anabolic steroids and corticosteroids, such as cortisone. “I remember saying, ‘Oh, I wonder what the hell is extract of cortisone? I discovered that there was no such thing as an extract of cortisone. It is either cortisone or it is not.’-Greg Strock
5. Angus Fraser was paid by USA Cycling even though he had no medical training to take blood tests, supply medicines and vitamins, and providing injections. “At one point we were getting two or three injections a day.”-Greg Strock
6. Angus Fraser was accused of supplying Australian track rider Martin Vinnicombe with illegal anabolic steroids and writing a letter to the rider advising him how to use steroids, how to sell them to other riders, and how to conceal doping from his coaches by saying the steroids were a mixture of legal vitamins.
7. Rene Wenzel received a phone call in 2000 at the Bermuda Grand Prix that he was being sued by Greg Strock. Matt DeCanio was there racing with Linda McCartney sitting with George Hincapie on a bench and witnessed Hincapie being apologetic towards Wenzel. Out of the 4 riders that Wenzel coached in the 1990 junior world championships in England George Hincapie was the only rider who not to file a lawsuit. Gerrik Latta, Greg Strock, and Erich Kaiter all filed a lawsuit.
8. Erich Kaiter detailed a regime that involved 42-48 injections over a 10-12 day period during the 1990 Junior World Championships
9. Erich Kaiter was later diagnosed with Crohn’s disease which he believes was from the injections.
10. Greg Strock was diagnosed to have human parvovirus B19 infection which he believes was from the injections.
11. The appointments by Angus Fraser were approved by the United States Cycling Federation and payments made to the soigneur came from the governing body.
12. The United States Cycling Federation claims that Wenzel was fired due to downsizing but a statement from David Joyner, former chairman of the United States Olympic Sports Medicine Committee under oath, said he was told by Lisa Voight, former executive director of USA Cycling, that Wenzel was fired for doping junior athletes.
13. On November 15, 2001 Rene Wenzel received a letter of recommendation from the CEO of USA Cycling, Lisa Voight. In that letter she highly recommended Wenzel as a coach.
14. Jimi Killen’s mother whose son was a national team racer called USA Cycling to complain that he had been injected without his parent’s permission and the hiring of the unqualified Angus Fraser to “medically” prepare the cyclists.
15. Strock and Kaiter were each paid $250,000 by USA Cycling in November 2006, and agreed to a confidentiality agreement that prevented them from ever discussing the terms of the settlement.
16. Chris Carmichael was excluded from the lawsuit because of compensation in the amount believed to be $20,000.
17. Rene Wenzel was there when Charmichael gave the injection to Greg Strock. “I was present when it was administered. Carmichael agreed to a settlement very quickly. In hindsight that was probably a smart idea.”-Rene Wenzel

I keep saying to the lance-haters on this board that there is no evidence, that is why these others have to use crazy-assed theories that are really stupid. It is one thing not to believe the guy, but another to think there is actual evidence of cheating. If there was, we would all know about it.
There is evidence, you’re just too blind to see it. Read Game of Shadows. Substitute Lance for Barry Bonds.
page 104: Marion Jones to a reporter who dared to ask a doping question, “We’re all quite aware that we are proponents of a drug-free sport, so let’s keep it at that.”
page 106: on Regina Jacobs when “asked how a runner who was nearly 40 could set world records, she didn’t mention drugs. Instead, she said, ‘This isn’t old. You have heart, age doesn’t matter.’ ”
page 97: For crying out loud after the U.S. Championships in Eugene, Oregon (June 22, 2001)where Tim Montgomery won the 100 meters breaking the ten second barrier, USADA gave him “a letter congratulating him on providing a clean test sample after his race. The letter reinforced Conte’s belief that beating the testers was like ‘taking candy from a baby.’ ”
How about you go to Andre Agassi and ask him and/or the ATF why they ignored his positive?
I think Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams should take up the sport of cycling. Maybe they could get to the bottom of the payoff, ahem, doping machine never accounted for with Armstrong’s nice payment to Hein Verbruggen which quickly became unaccounted for.
Seriously, why do you think Trek settled the case?

So maybe old news but why if Johnny V and Franky were good friends didn’t Johnny V hire Franky as a DS? Pretty odd considering they were both on the same page. Or would Lance of done all he could to beat up on Garmin (Team) if he did? If so what a puss Johnny V is, if not then why not hire Franky? Maybe Johnny V pays crap to DS’s? Kinda puzzling.
Baldwin
Uhhh…..I’m going to go out on a limb and say the reason Andreu wasn’t hired up to DS at Garmin was because he’s not a terribly good DS. In 2002 at the SFGP he sent Hincapie solo to attack the last climb at Fillmore way too early, losing the race. Soon thereafter he lost his job as Postal’s domestic DS.
rubie
The only reason Frankie was even hired as DS at Postal was the same reason Stephanie McIlvain was brought back on board: to keep them quiet amid growing suspicion on Armstrong. Little did they know Frankie wouldn’t talk.
The reason why JV didn’t hire him was because of Betsy, Frankie’s wife. She was seen as a liability since she was not one to put up with Armstrong’s tactics.
Jarne Brifter
frankie was questioned about that SF race at an event I attended. He said he had 4 guys in the break. Hincapie, Armstrong, Landis, and Ekimov. GH attacked on his own, and since Postal had 3 other strong guys in the break they would be able to sit on and get a free ride while the others chased G.H. Frankie said GH’s form was unknown because of some crash earlier in the sesason. Lastly,Frankie said the riders lost the race becasue the Postal guys had the numbers.
I don’t think one race would cause a termination.

Hello Betsy,
I’m an old friend of Andrew Kozak who moved away from the city but will be visiting next month to retreive some gear out of storage — including a Knoll chair that I was looking after for him. Could you give me his email address or let him know that I’d like to get back in touch?
Dr Grigori Perelman, a reclusive Russian genius, is refusing to accept the prestigious $1 million “Millennium” mathematics prize awarded by the Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge, MA.
The 44-year-old Perelman currently resides with his mother in his hometown of St. Petersberg, living extremely humbly. One neighbor told a Moscow newspaper, “He always wears the same tatty coat and trousers. He never cuts his nails or beard. When he walks he simply stares at the ground, rather than looking from side to side.”
Sacha
Really? I can see what everyone else sees. Lack of a lawsuit is just a ridiculous statement of “proof”. Look, the reason things like this don’t make it to evidence is that people hear different things at different times. Even more so at times of stress, as I assume this was. It is like the telephone game that kids play. Studies show that patients only hear 50% of what doctors tell them under the best of circumstances- they are actually listening intently. Even if you watch PBS, there are always programs about how the brain can change the things we see and do and even when people are confronted with concrete evidence of the truth, they still believe what they thought originally.
If two people hear the exact same thing, it is stronger, but there were people there who said it never happened. Despite what you might think of their ulterior motives for lying, as observers, we have no way to decide who is telling the truth or not.
I don’t know if LA or anyone who has not tested positive has cheated. Of course I am suspicious, especially 10 years ago when it appears that everyone was. Lots of people didn’t get caught and we don’t go around pointing fingers at the winners of every race back then. So all I keep saying is that he has not tested positive or admitted to doping, so for now we can’t say he is a doper- and those are the ways we decide this right now. It is just a fact. Perhaps you are right, but there is no way to confirm it at this time.
Hugo Lugo
Hey Sacha, I hate to break it to you but Pantani doped too. Sorry buddy.
betsy andreu
Come on Sacha, make your argument stronger. There was no telephone game. Stephanie’s mind went blank. She says in her deposition she didn’t hear/doesn’t remember anything the doctor said. She was the only other one to testify about that incident other than me, Frankie and lance. A question which hasn’t been answered is why Chris Carmichael and his then girlfriend-now-wife, Paige, and lance’s erstwhile gal at the time, Lisa, never testified for lance. Nor did they ever sign affidavits saying this incident never happened. In her deposition, Stephanie said Paige was there. Chris Carmichael in a cyclingnews.com blurb afterward said Paige was never there. So, Sacha, can you please give your explanation for this? By now, it’s amusing. It’s fun to see the doping apologist not be able to answer a question. I never said lack of lawsuit is proof he doped. Nice try though.
Good stuff? seriously? that’s some weak ass shit. top 10 list. Real fucking original.

scorsese to remake “the age of innocence”
… raging bull
I keep saying to the lance-haters on this board that there is no evidence, that is why these others have to use crazy-assed theories that are really stupid. It is one thing not to believe the guy, but another to think there is actual evidence of cheating. If there was, we would all know about it.

“Republicans afraid of Obama’s package”
hotsauce rode a mean burrito.
You probably think Armstrong’s a real family man with morals too, eh?

So maybe old news but why if Johnny V and Franky were good friends didn’t Johnny V hire Franky as a DS? Pretty odd considering they were both on the same page. Or would Lance of done all he could to beat up on Garmin (Team) if he did? If so what a puss Johnny V is, if not then why not hire Franky? Maybe Johnny V pays crap to DS’s? Kinda puzzling.
She was seen as a liability since she was not one to put up with Armstrong’s tactics.
frankie was questioned about that SF race at an event I attended.
I don’t think one race would cause a termination.
relax
good god
MEATLOAF…Jesus H Christ Mom?!?! What does it take around here to get some MEATLOAF!
Toto is Dead
Long Live Toto!!!
or a new version…like South Park meets Family Guy meets Hipster???
I bet JV lives in constant fear of the Johanstrong.
He saw what happened to Frankie, who’s now hocking American flag-themed tires. http://www.cvelo.com/fast-tires-usa-pneus-route-6985-878-8-57.z.fr.htm
Weird.
Sideburns has too much to lose if he starts talkin’ specifics about the days of yesteryear…
Eh, besides, he’s a dork.
is that one of the dudes from oasis?
Good little compilation of links about Pharmstrong’s alleged doping:

Its Lance with his broken collarbone.
Ruben WTF are you talking about. If you think this is proof, you are long gone. BTW, Lance sure seemed like a jerk many times, maybe now less so, but that has nothing to do with doping either.
If that guys wife had/has ultimate truth and is mouthy, why is it not being used? Because it is impossible to prove (read proof)so it is just a he said she said. You can believe it or not, but it does not constitute proof.
Sacha *hearts* Lance!
Kristin Armstrong does not talk because she can’t. She is very well compensated, 80/20 is what I heard. She has a non-disclosure agreement, SOP w Lance. He covers his aass very weel, ask Greg Lemond!!! (no punn intended)
I heard she once chased him down the street and whacked him with a golf club, oh wait…
I do I do. I am writing a tell all book and it will be juicy.
I was commenting on Adreu’s (sp?) wife who supposedly heard LA confess. I would guess LA’s ex would have more reason than anybody not to tell all- mostly kids not $$.
Sacha, there is evidence – you just don’t want to see it or believe it. Frankie testified the same as did I. And the reason for singling me out is because…..Frankie’s affirmation verifies the infamous hospital incident since Frankie is credible?
Lance doped. If he didn’t he should sue me for saying so.
Read “From Lance to Landis”. No lawsuit there either.
Toto is the funniest cartoon ever. I’d like to thank my Uki friend, Andrew Kozak, for telling me about it.
I had no idea Shen was from Switzerland either!
Hello Betsy,
I’m an old friend of Andrew Kozak who moved away from the city but will be visiting next month to retreive some gear out of storage — including a Knoll chair that I was looking after for him. Could you give me his email address or let him know that I’d like to get back in touch?
Thanks,
Michael

Dr Grigori Perelman, a reclusive Russian genius, is refusing to accept the prestigious $1 million “Millennium” mathematics prize awarded by the Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge, MA.
The 44-year-old Perelman currently resides with his mother in his hometown of St. Petersberg, living extremely humbly. One neighbor told a Moscow newspaper, “He always wears the same tatty coat and trousers. He never cuts his nails or beard. When he walks he simply stares at the ground, rather than looking from side to side.”
Hey Sacha, I hate to break it to you but Pantani doped too. Sorry buddy.
Good stuff

Good stuff? seriously? that’s some weak ass shit. top 10 list. Real fucking original.
a good chew toy might help you relieve some stress.
don’t know if that’s the real betsy andreu in here, but if so, it’s pretty darned cool of you to come and post no-nonsense, informative responses out here in the public domain on this obviously polarizing topic.
bravo!
oh and tell frankie best of luck with kenda–hope to see some great results! always been a huge fan of his–that run in to the finish in ’94 with sean yates…turned himself inside out…one of the best finishes ever. i bet he’s a real ball buster of a director: old school, no coddling, and high expectations of his riders–the kind which he would have required of himself.
hey, a team interview here would be pretty cool, you know….
cheers.
