Welcome to the Tue, 02/03/2010 – 02:10 edition of Off Topic! You are looking at the next step in the evolution of VCN, the Off-Topic page. Have you ever been frustrated because you had a burning desire to call someone a sandbagger and could only hope to be timely by posting your comment to a photo gallery page or on a page describing a charity ride?
Well, your prayers have been answered! You can post your comment from the home page and it magically comes to rest here with the other orphans from the land of Misfit Comments. The page gets refreshed every day, but not to worry! Each day’s page will be archived and treasured, so you can look back on past pages with pride, shame or disgust-depending on how the day’s conversation went. So post away! We’ve got an internet to fill up.

Diefenbach and Daniels Tied in Series Lead
Next Race Thursday February 4th, In Emmaus, PA VFW
Matt Diefenbach, regularly seen racing the World Series of Bicycling during summer months at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center and riding for Alliance Environmental, shares the Championship Roller Racing (CRR) series lead in ranking with Wim Daniels of Newark, Delaware who races for Services Environmental. Both have 36 points. Reached this morning at Ft. Lauderdale, FL training camp, the opinionated Diefenbach commented, “Laky [Andy Lakatosh] and I are bummed out to be missing the early Feb. roller races. This should give some of the other guys a chance to catch up on points – Like LaCorte [NY sprinter Andrew LaCorte, Affinity team] and the road riders who seem afraid to come out and show their stuff against us.â€
Third place is another tie between Princeton, NJ winner Andy Lakatosh, Alliance Environmental, and the young roller sensation, Mertztown’s Zack Semian, Allance Environmental, who won last week in Emmaus, PA. Each have 21 points. Rounding out the top five, in 5th is David “Goliath” Espinoza from Breinigsville, PA and racing for Affinity. A favorite going into last week’s final, Goliath barely made it to the end and had this to say after: “That’s not going to happen again. I’m already looking forward to the next race”.
The points ranking system for the pro men is 20 points to the winner, descending 1 point each place down to 20th place. Each rider also gets 1 point for competing.
While the rider turnout for the women’s division has been less then overwhelming in number of competitors, last weeks racing was hotly contested with Kutztown, PA’s Coleen Hayduk, Verducci Breakaway winning the final over Kate Veronneau who rides for the Kutztown Cutters, and third place finisher Emmaus native Mary Costelloe, Alliance Envirnomental. “We had a blast. I’ll be back Thursday night. And, now that the gear limit is gone and we can use any gear, that could benefit me” said Veronneau, referring to the extra cranking leverage that goes with her 6′ tall stature.
The women’s division will be enhanced with the return of Detroit, MI’s Kacey Manderfield, Cycle Loft, who rode so well against the pro men in the first event at Triumph Brewing Company in Princeton. Maderfield had to miss last weeks race due to a previous trade show commitment in Detroit but is back to take the start this Thursday in Emmaus.
Prize money in the women’s class will be boosted as well with the addition of a new sponsor, Velo Precision Cycling (VPC), formerly known as American Cycling Academy, coming on board specifically for the women’s class. “I want to help develop that aspect of the sport especially now that women have an equal number of events as men in the Olympics. That’s important.” said VPC Principal, Gil Hatton, himself no stranger to The Games, having coached Marty “The Blade” Nothstein to gold at the Sydney Olympics.
Another new Championship Roller Racing supplier is the globally know Phoenix Sports Timing that will provide timing, sound, video equipment and expertise to the events. Other CRR Series suppliers include the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, and Mike Frayssee Sports.
There is also an open class of racing know as the “Human Class” for virtually anyone wishing to give roller racing a try.
Racing starts at 6:30 PM with qualification time trials for pros, women and human classes. The program continues throughout the evening finishing with the pro finals and awards at 9:30 PM. The event is open to the public. Food and beverages are available on site.
