Big ones coming
There are some events out of town this weekend, but the racing in the city for the next two days will revolve around a pair of twins as big as Billy and Benny McCrary. I am typing about the Mengoni Grand Prix and the Lou Maltese Memorial, of course. So if you want to be crowned king of the park racers, you cannot miss those races.
Also happening this weekend in locations farther away, is the Tour de Medford on Medford, NJ on Saturday; the Course de Marlton-Evesham-Marlton in Marlton, NJ on Sunday; and the "NJ Route 29" 36 KM TT(T) in Frenchtown, NJ on Sunday.
I second the big congrats to the Kissena crew cleaning up at master’s nationals. Way to contribute to one of NYC’s richest cycling traditions out in Colorado Springs! You guys deserve major respect for the hard work you put in all year.

If anyone is shut out of the Park Worlds this weekend like me, I can tell you that Medford is a really good crit.
It is in down town Medford (not a corporate center) so they actually have spectators
the course is not too technical but it is not an oval either and has a slight up hill

Didn’t get to this just after last weekend, but want to put in a word for the Millersburg Stage Race that happened last weekend in Millersburg, PA about 3.5 hours from New York. It’s really worth looking at for next year. The whole town gets into putting the event on, and everything was really well organized and supported. Plenty of volunteers marshaling the course (and about 3-4 lead cars and motorcycles per field to provide a pretty good rolling enclosure), events run on time, results within a few minutes of each event, free water for spectators and participants, free lunch after the road race, a reception with drinks and food for racers on Saturday night, an “adopt a racer” program where locals provide free places for racers to stay, beautiful clean race courses (flat TT, afternoon crit. with hill and several turns for separation, sprinters road race on Sunday), overall great vibe, the list could go on. They seem psyched to do it all again next year, and it would be great to have an even bigger turnout from this area.

There is an underground wager that the winner of Mengoni will also win Maltese because of a substantial bonus. Did I say substantial? Muy grande. Only the guys that are capable of winning know about it and have been instructed to deny it if asked about it. Five teams are involved.

4s don’t have a race on Saturday in CP, and only 4s can race on Sunday in CP. So there’s no bonus.

…is almost 90 miles from NYC. No way you are getting there in an hour, just so you know and can plan for it in case you are planning on going.
Any idea if the park is all open and has been cleaned up after that storm that passed by this week?
The real question about the Mengoni is whether or not Empire will drive the first lap pace higher than they did during that epic club race a few months back. Lets see if we can get lap times below 12 minutes.

for the info…yeah, i rode the park the day after the storm and the half the park was closed and the rest of the park was a mess.
Registration: 6:30-7:25 a.m. at 72nd and East Park Drive (this avoids having 8-11 year old kids riding up Cat’s Paw & then back down to their start at Tavern). Wendy Nickerson (CRCA/Sanchez H-L) will be running registration.
8-11 – Starts at Tavern, finishes on Cat’s Paw
U8 – Starts at Cat’s Paw, 200 M. race
12-14 – Starts at Cat’s Paw and rides a loop, taking the 102nd Street cut-off.
Parent or Guardian signature required on race release. Helmets required. Any bike/trike is fine.

In the 1-2 field? Big Crash or a big break with the rest pulling out.
well, speaking from firsthand experience, there were a lot of punctures. something about the rain and all the storm detritus on the road…
big crash on cat’s paw coming into the final sprint.
I’d say 50% of the DNF’s in 1/2 were flats. It sucked as it was shaping up to be a fun race.
