Bear Mountain has come and gone and now we are on the downward slope of the peaks of dozens of racers. We can now proceed to pick through the results and reconstruct what happened.
Many of the races that were held on Saturday haven’t tossed their results up yet, but the results for the Bristol Mountain Road Race are up, showing that people from the Rochester area really like this race.
At the Bear Mountain "Mom, isn’t a card enough?" race, Evelyn Stevens of Radical Media wins yet another race contested by women of cats 1, 2 and 3, an occurrence that has now become so familiar that I have that phrase in my cut and paste library, next to the words "Boonen" and "Booger Sugar". The Pro 1/2 men’s race was won by Clayton Barrows of Empire presented by Northwave. Meredith Ehn of Anthem Sports Women’s Cycling wins the women’s cat 3/4 race. Benjamin Salibra of CRCA junior development squad wins the junior’s 15-18 race. Mark Sumner of the Clinton Cycling Club wins the 45+ masters race. The 50+ masters race goes to William Thompson, also of the Clinton Cycling Club. The 55+ race goes to Horacio Ahumada of Cafeteros Cycling Club. The cat 3 race was won by Zack Noonan of Young Medalists/Team Dual Temp. Race 1 for the men’s cat 4 was won by the unattached James Ruhl. Race 2 for the cat 4 men was won by Danny Inoa of Brooklyn Velo Force. And finally, the 35+ race was won by David Freifelder of Westwood Cycle/Trade Manage Capital. Results are here.
There’s sure to be many tales to be told of a big day of racing, feel free to share them here.

i like the sleepy bear picture. cute.
What happened to her 2nd place result in the 3/4 field?
Valverde, OUT! 2 years! YES!!! CHEATERS will get caught and be punished!
Green Hornet
I thought my bike was suddenly afflicted with a death wobble on the Lake Welch descent. I’m just a cat 4, Bear’s about the closest to an Alpine descent I’ll probably ever ride, so that shit was skeeery.
Were you the dude on the Bora’s?

VDV out of Giro, crashed, looks likes low back/hip area…x-rays en route…
Wobble: wheels true and tensioned evenly? frame material and alignment? position on bike? squeezing Top Tube with legs to reduce vibration?
I read this site to follow local cycling and tape the Giro to watch it later. Many thanks for spoiling that fun. If I wanted to know what was happening at the Giro I could follow it on cyclingnews.com or something.
a pro peloton crash update is not a race spoiler
yes it is.
are you serious? you wanted the “fun” of seeing a rider crash without knowing about it first? you’re reading the comments section of a site devoted to bike racing and you’re offended because people are talking about a bike race? get a grip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Z6volo0Tg&feature=channel_page
yeah seriously you have some problems if you are looking forward to surprise crashes in races
All you wanted to know about speed wobbles:
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/shimmy.html
I wanted to watch to see a particular rider do well. Now it’s over.
any info is a spoiler for those of us who want to watch it later when we get home from work. 99% of the people on this site get that and have some common sense not to spoil. You are in the minority.
This Sunday, May 17, is the Tour de Parc criterium in Wantagh, Long Island. There are separate races for Cat 5, Cat 4, Cat 3, Masters 40+, Women and Pro/1-2-3.

anybody that wants to go home and watch the coverage of a sprint stage needs to get a life. You really only need to see the catch and the sprint. I can see watching it live (like I am now), but not worth the replay. This commentator is not that great.
Tour de Parc is a very fast and safe course. I am extremely psyched the race is still on. Thanks Charlie!
the gyro?
Levi Leipheimer is short.
Lance Armstrong is 37
The Italian riders want to win stages in the Giro
Boonan is a rockstar in Belgium, and gets away with much worse than we hear about.
she’s a man.
It might be a good idea to work out the spoiler procedure here? I watch live as I don’t get universal on my TV. Should the comments wait until after the stage airs on TV? Or should it be anything goes and if you don’t want to know, stay away until after you see the stage?
Andy – how about a separate feature for people that want to talk about races real time. Comments on that page don’t feed to “most popular” or “most recent” comment boxes. Nobody posts about races on other features and the geeks who think this is a website for talking about pro races can have their own little private anonymous conversations among themselves on the new “talk about pro bike races here” page while the rest of us can let this site do what it does best . . . stir up trouble on the local Cat 3 and Cat 4 scene.
mary had a little lamb…gyro.
http://blue-mondays.blogspot.com/2009/05/ride-of-season-third-place-at-bear.html
We might have a Giro page up by tomorrow. We have to set it so the comments don’t go to the newest comments section on the homepage.
On a day when there is a stage you really want to watch “as live” is that you avoid these sites entirely: NYVC, CN’s the NYT’s (since they will put it on the home page if its really unusual resultor an American wins the stage etc..)
You really should be able to do without these sites for 8-9 hours. Very easy procedure. So don’t go bug Andy to code a whole separate site… never mind…
PLEASE don’t tell me the Tour de Parc results!
I want to race it and find out myself.
dude, you totally won tour de parc!
Congratulations On a great win.
TM
I understand that people want to avoid spoilers…
But it is INSANE that people visit nyvelocity, a cycling website — that includes daily VDV Giro updates — and then complain about spoilers.
If you don’t want to know what is happening in a race, don’t visit cycling websites. Simple.
“holdja line”
i can’t help if its around lunch time and I m hungry.
by the way, the last 20k were awesome! worth sitting stooped over your computer at 1030 at night after a good game of dungeons and dragons! oops. didn’t mean to spoil it for anyone.
NYVC wants you to visit site, no matter what.
So, considering today’s events, does this mean we won’t be getting updated reports from VDV turing the Giro?
Now, if you got get VDB and all his issues, that would be interesting!
http://www.crca.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/bearresult.htm
Giro chat page up now. Go to the homepage and you’ll see it.
Why was he racing Cat3s at Bear? He is a Cat2 and registered and raced Cat2 at Battenkill. Shouldnt this be a DNF?
Uh, I think you are mistaken. Didn’t see him in the results of B-kill, nor any Cat2 race this season. Is he really a 2?
sagalowsky was indeed registered for the cat 2 race at battenkill:
http://www.bikereg.com/events/conflist.asp?EventID=7221&sortBy=team
Well, I stand corrected. He sure showed the Cat3’s what a Cat2 can do by sandbagging (bandSAGing?).
*SNAP*
dude should’ve stayed a 3 with that result.
CRCA takes the Men’s, Women’s, and the Junior’s races? That has to be a first.
It looks like Will got himself a jersey:

Will Riffelmacher
Adam Switters
Wondering how some of these guys compete at nationals when they are on Pro Teams also. EX. Driscoll won Div1 A RR. He is now on Rock Racing. Are there different rules for cycling than the other NCAA sports?
yeah, no one gives a fuck about cycling
there aren’t the same eligibility rules. it is governed by the NCCA, not NCAA. That’s why you can have grad students racing collegiate for more than 4 years. I do find it weird that they allow this though. Many non-NCAA sports still follow the NCAA guidelines for eligibility, etc.
Sagalowsky did the P/1/2 – mistake in the results
Was registered for Cat3 and finished as Cat3.
well, which is it?
I heard Evie finished Bear yesterday and asked Mike Green, “I’m done with my warm-up, when does the race start?”
Sagalowsky switched to P/1/2.
Evie said no such thing.

cat 4s are awesome!
you only did 4 laps. please don’t embarrass yourself, excitable cat 4.
they did them pretty quick. Signed, not an excitable cat 4.
Only 4 guys went that fast. The rest of the field was 10+ minutes (or 2.5minutes per lap) slower. I bet no one gave those guys split times.
…between the Cat 4A and 4B fields.
There was not 10 minutes between the first 4 guys and the rest of the pack.
that’s pretty much all this site is
I saw the Excitable Cat 4s open for the Brian Setzer Orchestra at Roseland in ’97. What ever happened to those guys?

they’re big in japan

Times are off …
Those 4 guys got a gap right near the end of the race. I would put the gap at 10 seconds maybe?
My computer showed 2:38. That time is off by 10 minutes. The Cat4A field was running 39.5 minute laps.
It pays to do a reality check before posting …

Here’s to the elephant in the room… a certain rider coming in fifth after just about hanging in a few weeks prior.

anyone juicing for BEAT MT?
yeahhh I have a pineapple smoothie
wheelsucker is at it again. Go talk to him, ask to train with him, be direct…
I agree with the 5th place comment. You don’t go from being park pack fill to fifth at Bear in a month or two. A confirmed and unrepentant doper does it and you don’t need a test to see the obvious.
that didn’t take long
beat out photos and sandbagger
Heredia won the spring series 3 weeks ago. His progression this year is consistent an normal.
that’s funny
The results this year at Battenkill and Bear are some of the worst I’ve seen at these big races? WHacked out scoring, missed riders, revamped “final” results. No reasonable way to protest or appeal missed results, DQs, etc. Putting riders in the wrong finishing fields.
Am I correct that the same company that did bear results also did Battenkill? weren’t they a mess!
Congrats to dieter and green and the ny clubs for putting on a tremendous race. putting results and scoring aside, BOTH those events are the tops around. But its just amazing how whacked out scoring can foul up a race a good bit.
if its the same company, they should be embarrassed.
Shut up and train. Stop all the backbiting and rumors and better yourself. All you guys are concerned with is doping, that’s all you ever talk about. Just because you suck and have better morals than to dope doesn’t give you the right to talk shit all day about someone. That constitutes low morals as well!
battenkill was fouled by dieter getting greedy and feeling the need to create 100 different fields
agreed.
way too many fields at battenkill.
wahhh! too many bikes, wahhhhh!
oh, you saw your name listed as finishing 34th instead of the 32nd that you thought you had? did you get passed by a 15 year old from the junior field?

The Bear MT event brought in approx $25,000 from entries…
who gets all this MONEY?
None of the volunteers!
how much dope can that get u? lol
$25k? How did you come up with that number? How much do officials get paid? How much does the park get paid? How much does the ambulance get paid? How much does the police get paid? How much does SRAM and Mavic neutral support get paid? Have YOU ever put on a race and see what the expenses are?
IF YOU LOOK AT THE TOP TEN, WHY WOULD HE DO ANYTHING WITH 3 TARGETRAINING RIDERS, 2 WESTWOOD RIDERS AND 2 EMPIRES?
what would you do…take 25,000!
You right the teams with multiable rider made a complete utter mess of this!
First, a few important reminders:
1. While racing at Floyd Bennett Field is competitive please remember it’s still just a TRAINING SERIES! I heard some disturbing reports that riders were fighting, cursing and even taking their hands off their handlebars to grab other riders during the race. This behavior will not be tolerated at this TRAINING SERIES and riders who act this aggressively are not welcome at our races and should just stay home.
2. Please use the number you received tonight for the entire series.
3. A reminder that if you are a Cat 3 rider and your racing license says your racing age is 39 or younger you MUST race in the Cat. 1-2-3 race. Licenses will be checked at next week’s race.
4. The Tour de Parc criterium in Wantagh, Long Island, is this Sunday, May 17. For more info and to register online go to: http://www.bikereg.com/events/Register.asp?EventID=8137

i like big butts and i cannot lie.
733 entries x $35+ = $25,655.
nice chunk of cash… (what about sponsors donations), I doubt if the expenses are $25k… even big reg makes a decent profit on such a large event. Bike races in the 80s didn’t cost an arm & a leg to enter, it’s totally out of control now, u need a second job just to complete (the gov must be behind it, lol)!
😉

CRC has been around since 1898… they know the deal!
why don’t you find out how much it costs to put on a race you socialist-entitled-dooshiebag-cat-5-a**clown?
for example, cops get paid this little thing called OT to watch out for the safety of dudes riding around on skinny tire bicycles while clad in lycra all morning, not that there’s anything wrong with that. add in insurance, equipment, city fees, this, that & the other thing and i’d be surprised if any big race like b-kill or whatever makes $, if any.
whatabunch o’ namby pamby chicken littles. go race. or don’t race. think anyone cares if you do or not?
Good for crca-I hope they make 250k not just 25k.

convicted doper and long time cheater placed top 5. why does the promoter let him participate in races? what are the chances he stopped doping and cheating??? when is somebody going to say something??? what kind of prestige does a race like that have??? what a joke!
…was the P/1/2 at Bear. I did not attend Battenkill because I didn’t think my upgrade had been approved yet. Same reason why I registered as a 3 for Bear, then switched to P/1/2 when I got news of my upgrade. Funny you guys think I would sandbag. I put in for an upgrade as soon as I could.
Also, whatever enterprising cyclist saw fit to file an official complaint against me ought to make sure he’s got his facts straight next time. You might get a kick out of wasting your time on this stuff, but I don’t, and I don’t think the USA Cycling officials do, either.
I feel better now.
Bear Results
Anyone Tested?
Maybe shows hard work still counts
I trust the results were fair
Some are able to go to Tenerife or Colorado
Some use tents and masks
Some have used the needle in the past and served and should be accepted back
until the race promoters want “clean” racing (and racers/sponsors insist and pay for it) and test with an independent authority (USADA?) there will be doubts about every race…
Honestly, I could care less. If someone wants to dope on the super duper amateur race circuit then the joke is really on them. It would be so certifiably pitiful to use illegal drugs for such an inconsequential race, that true justice would be served eventually.
Someone actually sent in a complaint from the Cat3 race? I dont know Jordan but unless he won the Cat 3 as a Cat2 why would anyone take the time to protest?
Even if the results were correct he was given a mid pack finish. So someone in the mid pack protested?
Awesome!
Why bother to race at all? The issue (drugs) are inherent to the system. Millar is no better than Basso, JV or Ferrari…change the system, don’t blame the player…
Race “standard” bikes, training, etc. NOT!
Make the UCI/USAC/Promoters TEST if they want a prizelist or Pro/1,2 race…let the Masters/3/4/5 self medicate…
I would rather race for $5k with testing, than more $ and no testing. EPO, on down…or don’t “certify” the results.
How can AMGEN ToC say there was nobody using EPO in 2006 when they didnt even test for it, coincidence???
You shouldnt be able to upgrade to 2 w/o a baseline passport?
Who here even knows their baseline? I would expect all the cat2 and above to know it…
