Hangover 5/5/2008

Section head text.

At the Cadence Cup at Prospect Park this weekend, Chad Butts of Champion Systems won the Pro/1-2-3 race, with Allessandro Matteucci of BVF winning the Category 4 race; Stefan Kusurelis of Cadence won the Cat 5 race. Did you think we were going to make some sort of posterior remark here? Please, we have very high standards.

At Jiminy, Mike Margarite of Empire continues his out-of-town success by getting second in the Pro/1-2 race from a break of two. Former NYC fellow Jason Beerman comes in third. In the 35+ race, Robert Lattanzi gets third with Marc Cesare 6th, Kurt Gustafsson 9th – some guy named after a belligerent rodent gets 4th. In the Category 3 race Merrill Lynch’s Tony Hall wins, with Kim Riseth 5th, and Scot Wisenbaker of Foundation 7th. In the Cat 4 race, Colin Prensky of Sanchez-Metro wins again, with NYVCs Matt Richards 4th, and Sergio Atocha of Gotham 6th. In the junior race, Pilip Capala comes in second with Lewis Almonte fifth. And in the women’s race, newly minted Cat 2 Maria Quiroga of Radical Media sandbags her way to 7th, with Ann Marie Miller of Sanchez-Metro 9th, and Ashley Prine of Radical Media 12th. Results here.

No Colt’s Neck results in yet, so if you won or know who did, let us know.

you didn't hear it from me

Colts Neck had a last lap attack by a colavita junior. Joe Straub (DKNY) bridged to him, dropped him. And hung on for a narrow victory over the field. The colavita kid got sucked up. Juan Pimental won the field sprint for second.

Anonymous

Didn’t get a shout out, because the results sheet didn’t show them as CRCA riders, and as 4/5s, their names aren’t as recognizable as more of the 1-3s, or 4s that have been around a while, or tearing it up like Colin has been.

Has less to do with disrespect about category and more to do with not knowing who they are.

Anonymous

i’ve got to say, that after reading a lot of ‘northern hardmen’ hate on nyc riders, its really nice to see so many guys up in the results in tough conditions. All fields deserve respect for making the most of a potentially miserable morning in new england.

Anonymous

each of those 4/5s won their own respective C club race back here in NYC so far this season! good work upstate.

dt

Some rider in the cat 4 field dropped BOTH of his water bottles in the downhill at JIminy and almost took me down. If you are racing BEAR, please make sure your water bottles are stable. Put tape on your cages.

Anonymous

There is always someone complaining or offering unsolicited advice. It’s akin to going to church with a bunch of born-agains.
Shut up and race.
No one wants to crash so I think everyone is on their P’s and Q’s. Saying eyes up, hold your line, slowing, etc. only frustrates everyone therefore increasing the odds of danger.
Shut up and race biotch!

53mph Cat4

Atocha is a wheel sucker or a smart racer – depending on how you look at it.

He’s the only one in the results who didn’t make an appearance at the front during the entire race. No attacks, no chasing, and no chatting either.

….Maybe a smart wheel sucker?

Anonymous

is a smart rider. I’ve watched him play the field well. Enough with the wheelsucker flames.
Oh yeah, he keeps his mouth shut as well!

Anonymous

UM.. I’M RACING AT BEAR, SO EVERYONE ADJUST YOURSELVES TO MY STANDARDS, TAPE YOUR CAGES. I’M ALSO A CAT 4, SO I DESERVE ALL YOUR RESPECT.

Anonymous

It’s like the guy who gets sloppy seconds, or is the bottom feeder off his more out going friends. yeah, he gets laid, but it’s sleazy and weak

Anonymous

“EVERYONE ADJUST YOURSELVES TO MY STANDARDS”
Race like me and if you don’t I’ll flame you here.
What a Bitch-Ass!

Anonymous

Idiot, you DO have to adjust yourself to other people’s standards. This isn’t a sport where you just do your own thing, and other people’s safety depends on you not being stupid and negligent… This guy might not have known he had shitty cages, but now he does, so he better “adjust to other people’s standards” and switch them out before he’s in another situation where they could fly out and take someone down at 50 mph.

Anonymous

are bunched up. Take a moment to pull them out of your ass.
I think he figured that out when he reached down for a drink.
Who’s to say that he’s here reading your whiny anonymous rants anyway. Why don’t your grow some balls and approach him instead of writing on a wall that he may or may not pass.

Anonymous

Saw that Jon Orcutt got 13th in a TT in Freeport Maine. Cool place to have a race.

I hope picked up a new back pack with his monogrammed initials and plaid flannel shirt while he was up there.

Not on Empire

I think it’s time for you haters to show some respect where it is due. Great result from Mike M this weekend.

dt

my note regarding water cages was not intended to be read by the PROS out there. I am so sorry if I insulted you by giving such a basic advice. And if you have any more valuable advice or clever insults to give to us cat 4 please do so, we need it badly.

Cat 2 Stu

Why do we keep having to read about stupid cat 4 races and the problems these guys have? Who really cares about a bunch of losers rolling around, crashing each other, making stupid attacks, getting caught, then leading each other out for $20? Its fricking retarded. I’d rather have the cat 4s out there just watch the big boys race and comment on what they learned from watching it. Its ridiculous. Guys: Nobody cares about you!!!

Alan Atwood

It’s New England in May….bring your layers next time (including myself who forgot his gloves while scoring at the top all day……..DUH!)

Mike M’s gonna be a 1 soon……could he win Bear?

ESG LI qualifiers Sunday; Zaverdas, Micko, Gyarmathy, and Straub are going to the games, and did it in shitty conditions.

Stars/Sharks Sun night…best game ever!! Ended at 2:30am, me tired this morning. Rangers loss was inevitable; not much productivity gonna happen in Pennsylvania the next week or two.

Anonymous

…with calling out negligent behavior in a public forum, especially this forum.

we are cometitors but, we are in some ways responsible for each other out there…

If a crash is caused by a sudden flat on a fast descent, that’s the inherent risk we all accept. But, if the flat was caused by a rider racing on shredded rubber or using tubulars just because zipp wheels are cool knowing they don’t know how to glue on a wheel…that’s a different story

Slow Cat 3

Alan,

Thanks to you and the officials who hung out in the cold rain during the Jiminy. The wind, cold and rain were tough but the race was a blast even if I got dropped on the downhill (I suck).

Regarding Sergio Atocha, he has not team and is a sprinter so why would he be chasing attacks and going off the front? He saves himself for the sprint because that is what he is good at. Also, last year in the 4s he was just bad. Like 40 minutes back from the leader bad. He has worked hard and is racing great so give him some respect. The big teams NYVC, Metro, etc should be bringing back breaks not one guy who is a sprinter with no support.

Keep it up Sergio!

Anonymous

It wasn’t to rag on one guy – that sort of thing should be made to someone’s face. It was too educate in general. That guy might not even be at bear.

dt

Happy to see that we still have adults around here. Maybe we can still use this site in a constructive way.
btw if I had known who dropped those bottles I would have told him personally AND post it on the site.

A Posting Critic

This is the Hangover not the racing advice forum.
If dude makes you uncomfortable due to reasonable negligent behavior then walk over to dude and say so.
Posting a whining rant just makes you sound like a (insert expletive here) and is less effective.
Basically what I’m saying is that there are bigger fish to fry than rookieish nonsense. Lets talk about real issues not this incessant finger pointing and flaming.

Tony Settel

How about Badger scoring 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the last three big races, Battenkill, Palmer and Jiminy. This guy is on some good form lately. Signed, Jealous Hater
Oh yeah – How about Lattanzi and Cesare in Jiminy 35+?!

Anonymous

seriously? bottles fly out of cages all the time, its part of racing. Get use to it. Nobody is gonna tape their cages unless they don’t hold their bottles at all, and guys tape em so they dont look their drink, not so it doesn’t bounce out and possibly roll in front of some unsuspecting moron who can’t manage to hop it or ride over it without catarophic failure of all biomechanical function. Get over yourself. and if a guy loses bottles, perhaps offer him a drink, he’s prly thirsty.

Next I’m gonna hear complaints about somebody getting accidentially spit on….

Hampsten

you geniuses stop hatin on the cat 3s and 4s. they drive the local racing business.

without them, no promoter could make a buck, and you’d be chasing each other up 9W on the weekends.

Rashad fan/Doube M fan

Went from long way out – 60 or 70 miles to go. Beside MikeM a Mengoni guy, Rashad and maybe another Empire were in it

Break split up late

Rashad

Break was good and I was very happy to be part of it. I was in it for 100K. I cramped with about 20K to go and took 70th for the day. I will keep trying until I get it right.

Anonymous

Interesting that they have a Cat3 squad. There was a Cat3 in full Team Type 1 kit with matching Team Orbea. Suprised more teams do not do the Colavita, now Team Type 1 amatuer thing to raise money for the pro budgets.

Anonymous

What happened to Powers and Wiswell? DNFs? I saw powers bike on the car so I think he was there unless there was another guy riding a Team Jelly Belly GT.

Anonymous

It’s “you’re.” The period is included inside the quotation mark. If yore going to be an anal, f*ckwit critic, be accurate. Thanks

Anonymous

“The period is included inside the quotation mark.”

No, it’s right both ways, as long as you’re consistent. In America, the period inside the quote marks is more common, but in English it can be done both ways.

Chris M

Do what you want, but all the old pros and fast locals from the ’80s and ’90s used to put the period before the quotes. Its so Cat 4/5 to put it after.

Anonymous

nice work, it only took you a 1/2 hour to google that. go back to the commonwealth with your stranded periods. we’re in america here, smart guy, so get your period inside the quotation marks. furthermore, quotation is a noun and quote is verb. it’s a quotation mark. i’m the radio raheem of grammar – ‘strunk’ tattooed on one hand and ‘white’ on the other. do not f*ck w/ me

Anonymous

It really depends on where you’re from. Traditionally, English had it outside of the quotation marks. However, American English allows for it to be put inside. Either way is usually right.

Anonymous

right before the start of colts neck the finish camera fell over. everyone almost had to revert to the “honor system”, aka arguing until you win

Anonymous

yeah, yeah, i know, i’m just trying to bait the delusional, anglophile “. guy to tell me “actually, you can refer to it as the CAS or the TAS in writing, since technically it’s the ‘tribunal arbitral du sport’ in french blah blah blah” after he googles around for a half an hour to find a comeback

sergio A.

to the asshole that’s talking shit about me when was the last time you sow robbie mcEwen, tom boonen go up the front and take pulls for no reason.
you didnt like it should have said something in ma face at the race asshole

Anonymous

Guys who know their best shot is in a field sprint, don’t have any teammates, and know there are teams interested in chasing down the break don’t take pulls at the front. It’s smarter to conserve energy and win than act all macho, take pulls, and lose.

Orcutt

(Responding a ways down the list)

Actually my father lives nearby and the course goes past his house, so seemed like a good occasion for a visit. It’s a great course and hope they keep the race going (19 mi rolling circuit – weather yesterday a.m. was driving 40 degree rain) though the pavement sucks in many spots and caused my 2nd puncture in two TT’s this year (tire sealed but I did much of the race on about 40psi rear).

sergio A.

can i ask u a question unknown person below me did you place?
you guys can say watever about me is not gona make me act any different in the field
and please put your nanmes when leaving comments, it should be a requirement

GS Gotham/Toga not Sergio

All I have to say to all the idiots out there giving shite to guys who use others wheels for strategic advantages

How the f ck did Boonen win his World Champ jersey?

He waited till the end and then snatched it from all the guys that WASTED their energy earlier on in the race.

If the guy whose been saving and conserving wins a race over the idiot whose been blowing his load the whole race, that’s an honest and EASY freaking win.

A win is a win, and those that are commenting on the cheap racers when was the last time YOU PLACED!!! HAHA, keep dreamin losers!!!

Velocity should host it — all the message board villains against each other, six laps around the park…sponsored by R&A, of course.

Anonymous

sergio, take it easy, what’s the point in arguing. don’t argue with fools, because from a distance, its impossible to tell the difference.

i hate bike racing

My speedometer read 14mph for most of the race. By the way Sergio wasn’t the worst offender for hiding in the pack. (That goes to the second place finisher)

jft

this guy wins a race, and some anon poster calls him an “offender” and the same for 2nd place.

And another calls the winner a douchebag.

I didn’t think it was possible but NYV is getting even worse. I know Schmalz likes insults and potty talk, but this is sad.

Anonymous

hey ihatebikeracing, make it faster next time. it seems like it would have been a perfect opportunity for stud like you to ride off the front.

what was wrong with sharing the love earlier, when folks were just glad to see some good nyc results out of town. look at last year’s jiminy results sheet, you will find many fewer nyc placings. joke or no joke, i had fun racing (or ‘pretend poseur’ racing) in the 30mph headwind.

Anonymous

So you hate bike racing, because the field is too slow, and someone who conserved his energy found a way to beat you. Either you need to grow a pair and attack, or else go find a different hobby. Try a tri! You can go as fast as you want. Trouble is, then you can’t blame it on other people when you suck.

Anonymous

It does not matter at all how fast a race is. The point is not to get a workout during the race- the point is to try to win. No shame in sitting in. The only thing there might be shame in is intentionally disrupting a team on the front that is trying to bring back a break. Not unheard of, even in racing at the highest level, but always lame. Just sit in if other people want to work.

Anonymous

like cycling, posting ain’t just about the strength. you need a noggin as well:

1. the anti-atocha comments are mid-bogglingly idiotic.

2. they attest to the most fundamental misapprehension of cycling tactics and strategy.

3. they cannot possibly be genuine.

4. they must be misdirection.

5. cui bono? (to whose benefit?) you got it – the people who actually dislike anonymous posting on nyvelocity.

conclusion: the moronic anti-atocha comments were a clever ruse by the anti-anon cabal who insist that nyvelocity implement logins. they are trying to force nyvelocity’s hand on the matter with spurious negative posts. it’s a triple reverse.

nyvelocity, don’t get played – stand firm. say this loud and say it proud: “anonymous forever, logins never! anonymous forever, logins never!”

jft, you (of all people!) should’ve been able to logic this one out. unless of course you’re part of the cabal, and your ‘wow’ comment is further subversive and artful chicanery …

also, it’s unfair to say schmalz likes the insults. i don’t see him furthering hate. toilet humor, ok – no shocker there – but i don’t see any negativity from him

jft

“it’s unfair to say schmalz likes the insults.”

he recently posted a list of suggested insults since he found the common ones boring

Anonymous

Your reading comprehension is usually better. He was sarcastically suggesting that you be more creative in your insults. Was he actually flaming anyone? No.

Anonymous

Cat 4 at Jiminy is a crap race. BORING! BORING BORING! Plus that biotch blowing her horn all race long 2 years ago.

I'm afraid

JT I think it’s got to the point where you’ve become like the guy yelling at imaginary government agents on the subway, everyone’s afraid to make any eye contact with you, lest they become involved in your world.

Anonymous

there are so many anon posts, I bet some teammates are arguing and don’t know it…calling eachother bd’s and a-holes…awesome

Anonymous

Let’s start the day on the right foot. Does anyone know when the Rockleigh Crit series begins? and how big are the fields usually? Good race? Seems like a much nicer ride than getting out to FBF on Tuesday pms.

Anonymous

last year the 4/5 race was well attended each week (30? riders). The 123….not so much. Usually only 10 or so.

Good training race. Very low key.

Anonymous

I gotta say, the level of insulting has gone down significantly over the past few months. Chris m and jft do not help, with a smattering idiotic comments in between the anon posts.

My posts get taken down, so I don’t bother with insightful commentary. And im only assuming you’re so defensive because you are part of this mediocrity?

Harri Man course is good to go! A little bumpditti bump here and there, but full speed as far as I can tell…
Great weather today, 70 degrees, very light breeze, less than 5 cars the entire day, and even an exotic car club drive by on Tiorati…

(real) racer guy!

Ha ha! While all you losers are chatting about jft, insults, grammar and the like, I have been training for BEAR! Yeah, baby, I’ve got 175 miles already since Colts Neck on Sunday! I will be so fit by Mom’s Day, you will be seeing nothing but my reflectors. Suckaz!!!

T.faye

and dont ya think that if you sign your name (real) racer guy, one would think to not use the term reflectors? really?
Will riding 175 miles inside of 2 days really help you more than anybody else? really! huh?

real (park) racer

Bear mountain is in Harriman State…PARK! I’d take your name but you didn’t leave one. Sucka! P.S. Safety first.

real racer

I gotta say I’ve always loved your makeup! You seem like the kind of gal who’s ridden 175 miles inside of 2 days way more than once.

uh….if someone calls you a “park racer” – its not complimentary. You would be the racer guy hammering out fast idiotic intervals on Sat. afternoon in CPK in the midst of 5 year olds, old ladies and tourists. yea ..ok safety first sucka? hahaha (really?) and oh yea those dudes rock the reflectors – for safety.

I’m so tired of all the hate around here. I just don’t get why people direct so much hate toward members of our small community as opposed to all of the other things we have reason to hate. Here’s my list of things I’ve learned to hate as a cyclist:

1. Litter. I bet there are 50 tons of McDonalds packaging on the side of roads across America. We don’t need a gas tax, we need a “tax companies whose sh*t is on the side of the road” tax.

2. Litterers. The guy who is so concerned about keeping his car clean that he proceeds to dump all of his sh*t on the side of the road needs to have his head punched in. Especially the ones who go through the trouble to gather it all in a McDonald’s takeaway bag and then throw the whole bag out the window. Can’t these people wait til they get home to throw the trash in the garbage pail? What’s the rush?

2. The “tack” guy on the GWB. Every now and then I see or hear about a tack ripping a hole in someone’s tire. Apparently some jerk off gets his jollies by effing with cyclists. Nice guy. I bet he kicks puppies too.

4. Puppy kickers.

5. Female asian drivers on cell phones (not hands free) in SUVs pulling out from not-so-blind corners in Bergen County during rush hour (ok – I think I narrowed that enough so as to offend as few of you as possible).

6. NJ police officers who give speeding tickets to speeders on 9w (I actually like that part) but then give the speeders a head start before chasing them down so as to permit said police officers to drive 125 mph and weave in and out of traffic on 9w as they are trying to catch said speeders.

7. Mankinis

8. Ketchup packets. I don’t know why, but McDonald’s ketchup packets are littered throughout Bergen and Rockland Counties. Full ones too. Have you ever hit a full ketchup packet? It makes a cool splurting sound (which I like), but if the ketchup gets on your bike, it dries and is stupidly difficult to remove (which I hate).

9. Slower riders who I pass on 9w but then sprint up to me and try to sit on my wheel without asking. It’s so bizarre. If I was a runner and someone came up 6 inches behind me while I was running in the park, I would call the police (after punching said creepo in the stomach). Why do people think it’s ok to do that on a bike?

10. Drivers who don’t yield. I will include in this category:

a. People entering the road who roll halfway into the bike lane/shoulder and then stop (leaving you nowhere to go).

b. People who enter the road quickly when they should really wait for you to ride by, thus causing you to slam on the brakes or swerve to avoid t-boning them.

c. People who speed past you just to slam on the brakes and make a right turn in front of you.

d. People who (a) ride up on your as* at corners where the shoulder becomes a right turn lane, and (b) don’t give you a chance to move left or right, choosing instead to honk and weave and act like idiots.

e. Drivers identified above in 2, 5 or 6 who do any of this bug me even more. Unless, of course, they do it to a person identified above in 9. I really hate those people.

11. Traffic engineers. I don’t necessarily hate all of these people. But I hate the ones who (a) program traffic lights to give drivers a right turn signal onto a busy road (such as the right turn off of E. Clinton Ave onto 9w south), because (b) the driver will have his own lane after making the right turn so there’s no need to worry about him smashing into a car traveling south through the intersection on 9w, but (c) either forgot or didn’t care enough to consider that lots of biker travel south on that road and thus are at risk of being creamed by drivers making said right turn without looking over their shoulder to see if anyone’s coming. This happened to me today and the driver was, you guessed it, a person identified in 5 above. Smoking too (with cigarette in the non cell phone hand). The interesting part about this one is that both the biker and the turning driver believe they have the right of way here (driver has a green turn arrow and biker has a green light plus a legal obligation to ride as close as possible to the right side of the road). So even though the driver should clearly yield to the biker, the driver thinks its his “right” to make the turn without yielding. And yes, i’ve checked, there’s no “please yield to bikers” sign. Eff these traffic engineers.

12. Strollercise. That’s right. You’ve seen it in Central Park. I hate it. You should hate it too.

So what do you guys hate?

colin p.

i enjoyed that, i also hate pedestrians in the middle of an intersection (when i have a green light), yelling, “slow down, slow down, ya sh*t face!”

Anonymous

Don’t cry, little children…Try some kindness, compassion, peace and love. You might even gain a new friend instead of creating more hate.

outlaw

yeah can we talk about tickets???
just got a $85 for passing a red light on 9W, in a very safe situation. NJ’s finest are going after us!
