Hopeful 4/11/2008

Section head text.

Many of the Spring race series are now winding down, so the battles for the overall leads are sure to be hotly contested among those who desire brightly colored lycra additions to their wardrobes.

Saturday has a Harlem Hill Point’s Race at CRCA. Sunday has the last of the trio of Spring Series Races at Central Park, and the final Bethel Race of the season is on Sunday also.

Sunday also bring Paris-Roubaix, the “Hell of the North”. Will Boonen be able to nudge his teammates out of the way and capitalize on his good form? Will we get another “Guesdon-esque” surprise winner? Will Hincapie’s bike resist the urge to shatter into pieces? And personally, I’ve always considered the “Hell of the North” to be Duluth.

1st sometimes

who’re you calling friend?
too old and too slow to race in rain
plus no hot waitresses for extra motivation anymore

farce of the north

why is VS broadcasting the race NEXT weekend? or maybe they are actually doing BATTENKILL Roubaix and not Paris Roubaix.

Anonymous

Is boonen really on good form? Does not appear to be that fit. Not like previous years. Maybe his supply line dried up?

Will this be taken down now because I insinuated a euro pro uses performance enhancing drugs? surely I hope not.

My Prediction for Sunday!!Sunday!! Sunday!!!
I have to go with Tom Tom.
he has done noting this spring really..yeah he won a stage at the T.O.C
but any body can a win a stage there
heck I thing Schamalz can win one
George will have to wait till pigs fly
or I win a sprint against Wilson
and whore Hushovd will have to wait for a bunch sprint at the stadium. witch will never happen
so

2(Favian)
3(Ballan)

I’m pretty sure Versus could care less if you know who won or not. watch it streaming online if you care that much! the Versus shit is basically recap anyways. the only thing they do live anymore is the tour de lance. they dropped live paris nice and live giro coverage. they think americans have a one race mind, which for the most part they are correct. Plus, they have to pay for the rights to air it live, and with a minimum of interest from the general public, why bother? Eurosport will have it on live.

lee/sids

Who’ll make the selection 3/4 into the race? You know George has to atleast throw his hat in the ring! Tom and Ballan are good pics. Any CSC riders in the mix. I’ll have to look at the start list to see if Slipstream is pencil’d in and if so dont count out Mangy Backs!
I still like Hoste though.

Anonymous

the correct response is, “I ain’t your friend, palooka.”

then if the dude says, “What’d you say?,” you respond “I think you heard me just fine, punchy.”

but then when you go take a dump later that week in the guy’s apartment – and bring some reading material – DO NOT put a pop-tart in the toaster

Go George

Busting on George Hincapie is pretty low class. Here’s a nice guy from our area with a long, distinguished career as a professional bike racer, and you people insult the guy. If you don’t think he can win, fine, but spare us your stupid “sports talk” bullshit unless you sign your name and list your palmares. I wish him good luck and I hope he wins.

lee/sids

So true. If anybody needs to be rooted for its gotta be george. So close, so many times. His opportunity to take Boonen in the velodrome was and honest shot that slipped away. He’ll have to make the decisive move waaaaaay before gettin to the velo. I too hope he wins it. It would be the storybook ending indeed. If he makes the selection – the cycling world will go ape s%#!

schmalz

Like I treat the beloved Chicago Cubs, I will always hope for win, but I never dare to say it out loud for fear of having something go terribly wrong again.

Marco Quezada

Hello!!!I singed my name Marco Quezada.
all I said was that I dont think George
can win. why? because I think they are alot more talented teams out there
“complete team” that are build around the classic alone.
Busting on George Hincapie is pretty low class. Here’s a nice guy from our area

well how about not denying where you’re from “Its NYC baby” I herd interview
where he has said growing up in the south was really great.
as far as a nice guy.
a quote from a cycle sport mag.
I cant really remember the cover but he said in this interview. that growing up in the city…. New york city that is
was hard couse he didnt have any friends
or any body to ride with.
come on>>>>
now I new George And Charlie Issendorf
when they were coming up in the ranks
as JRS they seem to be joined at the hip
they were best freinds
and for you to say that
well I have my opinion and you have yours.
and you know what? I hope he wins
I really do it would be great??

Anyone who has been paying attention knows that Boonen cut back on his “program” right before the 2006 Tour when Operation Puerto hit. Why else was he like 7th in every sprint instead of 1 or 2. Like McEwen said, Boonen isn’t really a sprinter, he can just ride at 75kph (because you can’t tire out a hot rod). He’s not been the same since mid 06. He should be getting stronger as he approaches 28, 29, 30 yrs old. I respect him a little for cutting back though. he once said he would quit when he was 30…let’s see how that plays out.

lee/sids

In 06′ he was hurtin @ the tour. It had to suck wearing the world champ stripes and not being able to bag a stage only to quit when the road went up

where the hood at

I heard from a reliable source that there will be TV coverage this year with WCSN, a big-screen TV at the site and a $10K+ prize list

Mark your calendars!

George fan

My comment was directed mostly at the “Hincrappie” crankster, although “when pigs fly” is a bit of a stretch to describe the odds of Hincapie winning this toughest of races, one that requires not only form and guts but a good portion of luck. After all, second is closer than 97% of any of the other guys in the race got to winning. My point was also, why single out a guy who you think won’t win? There will be about 199 or so of those.

Anonymous

nice. Lets hope they get a DJ that has “expanded” musical interests beyond what I hear going into every bodega in manhattan. Lets hope the commentary knows some of the riders in the field and maybe one of the favorites and Lets hope the promoter isnt drunk off his arse. Lets hope they get organized on funding and do away with the friggen “money hat” – it so subway peddler-esque. Besides all that – love the race.

Anonymous

Roger DeVlaeminck had *one* flat in his 14 starts at Roubaix. He had some bad luck also, but that is damn good luck…

lee/sids

luck plays a part for sure but skill and preparation is a much larger factor. I remember when the Tour went through the Forest of Arenberg and the post stage interviews were interesting. Lance was saying how they just busted out the knarliest tires they could find – padded up the bars + had these funky little brake levers popped on. Bottom line is “dont bring knife to a gun fight”

Anonymous

– DJ with musical interests beyond bodega-groove
– Local commentator with knowledge of fields
– Promoter no more than buzzed
– Financial sponsroship
– Re-felting of the “money hat”

the only guess i can make about the choice of the picture is that the single ray of sunlight shining through the snow door signifies the coming of the spring. very poetic.

gonna b a lucky winner

I’d be dancing in front of my computer screen if Magnus Backsted were up there in the mix, but I think its left him at this point in his career.

That was an unfortunate crash on the beginning of the S-curve. There were some Ambulances there for a while. Updates would be appreciated. It was very slick out there.

Anonymous

Wet buds off the trees made it an already wet road extra slick. I believe that Reed Rubey, and Patrick on Ave A were injured. I heard Kyle Peppo also. Tons of other road rash as well.

Anonymous

Today was a crash fest for sure. I remember at least 4 guys going down from A field, and gather a lot from Bs. Hey wait, maybe I can win a race this season after all!

Seriously, get well to all those who kissed the tarmac today. Huge bummer.

phil / Sids

Hope all involved in the crash scenes today get well and back on the road soon asap. Was very messy but thought that everyone in the peloton was respectful.

Riders in front of the crash waited and did not try to gain from the misfortune of the crash and a nice race with co operative breakaway that lasted to the end, all those team tactic blogs must have paid off.

Anonymous

I’ve heard unconfirmed reports of busted leg and collar bone on Mr. Rubey.

Busted something or other on Mr. Littlefield.

Skip

I just spoke to Littlefield. He did break his ankle and will be in a cast for a while. He’ll be back soon….. stronger than before.

Anonymous

Thank you everyone for your concern for the injured ones from the B-field. The two who got carried to the hospital were from our team:

-Patrick Littlefield – Nasty road rash on knee etc and a broken ankle.
-Reed Rubey – Broken collar bone and hip replacement

They are strong and brave men, they managed to put on a smile despite the pain and disappointment.
I hope the other fellow racers are doing ok, if not better.

Congrats on those who stayed away in the break.

Confusion by the cutoff on the second lap (some riders thought we were taking the cutoff casused a small spill and combined with an ambulance on the S turn from the B crash lead to a gap. Front riders took off and those behind never got back on.

Anonymous

Reed broke his femur at the top where it connects to the hip. Similar to the injury Floyd Landis suffered that resulted in a hip replacement 3 years later.

Anonymous

“some riders thought we were taking the cutoff casused a small spill”

actually it was the NY velocity rider standing there waving us to the left, don’t blame the fucking riders

Anonymous

the front of the C field has taken advantage of a situation where the field should have been neutralized. With the route confusion followed by the lane cutoff by the ambulance, the field probably should have been neutral through the downhill.

Last year, the front of the C field did not yield to an overtaking women’s field approaching the S turn and when the the women’s field cut over, some C riders were cut off. In that instance, the entire C field was dq’d with no results posted for the C field in that race.

Anonymous

Alot of the Cs dont know any better because they are Cat5s or new 4s. THey need to learn. Has nothing to do with having no class. Just having no experience…

Anonymous

That makes no sense, they should have been for sure. That whole spot was unnerving from the beginning. Before any crashes on the first lap there was a huge truck taking up half the road as well. Thank god there’s not a railroad crossing through central park, can you imagine?

Anonymous

was waving you out of the right lane (and could have gotten back on his bike and continued to ride but, instead, decided to help out in a bad situation). B field got the same signal and no one was confused, so hold off on the criticism, learn from it, and next time you won’t make the same mistake.

Anonymous

but the front of the C field for not having the sense/fairness to slow on a downhill S with an ambulance on it.

Anonymous

Perhaps if this intro was given Before the racing season began and carefully went over neutralized fields and rider etiquette?

Anonymous

That’s why they are in the C field. Some things aren’t so apparent to the C’s yet as they are to the more experienced racers.

Anonymous

twice in less than a year. Taking advantage of a situation where the field should be neutral is not a misunderstanding, its poor sportsmanship.

Anonymous

So what are you saying? The group was together approaching the downhill S, a warning to move to the left lane was proferred, and the race blew apart on the downhill S as we passed an ambulance leaving a lead group and alot of dropped riders all over the course from that point on.

Anonymous

You all go have a drink and enjoy the nice weather and don’t look at this site again today? Try it. It’s called r e l a x i n g.

Anonymous

There are a lot of tires that suck in the wet. Vredestein does the best of the clinchers in the wet from my experience. Lower pressure helps also.

Sorry to hear about the nasty injuries. Reed get well soon.

kwk

so we pass the chicks, they are hangin on to the back of the field after the first sprint. the moto is yelling top of his lungs for us to stop racing and let the girls pass us. he is getting really close to me and a couple of other dudes.

very very dangerous in an already wack pack kind of day

Greg

Grip can be effected by a number of factors. Tires pressure, rubber compound, tread pattern and wheel weighting ( rider position ) are just a few.
It varies for each rider but generally a lower tire pressure will give you better grip ( I’m not entering in to the rolling resistance discussion here ).
The goal is for the tire to retain it’s shape while getting maximum surface area contact.
Over aggressive rider positions don’t help either with too much weight being carried on the front wheel the steering will become a little heavy and control of the bike becomes much harder when turning corners going downhill.
The S-bend in Central park is notoriously slippery due to rubber laid by braking vehicles and oil products from down changing. Throw in a little moisture and you have an added potential for danger.
I feel bad for those who went down and especially those who didn’t get back on their bikes. Heal fast.

Andy

Lower tire pressure = bigger contact patch, but the formula for friction is friction = normal (down) force x coefficient of friction. Contact patch size isn’t a factor in that. Lower pressure will keep you glued to the road better when it’s rough, but that’s a different issue. Might have to do some more silly experiments. Any real engineers/scientists out there?

Anonymous

“Can’t speak for anyone but B field, but when we got the turn if the ambulance was there, some Setanta shouted neutral, and everyone listened.”

Jeff Vogel was the Setanta directing traffic around the ambulances. Afterwards he walked back to the finish and then went to the hospital to have his broken femur looked at. Seriously.

Anonymous

then the C field results should be thrown out as they were last year when the C field failed to yield to the overtaking woman’s field on the S turn.

Get well soon, el jefe.

Alex R

Jeff has been a club member a long time and knows what is important. I am not one bit surprised by his actions. I’m sure his actions saved a lot of others riders skin. We should all thank him, and others like him, for helping out.

840

“then the C field results should be thrown out as”

Er, does a racer on the side of the road yelling “neutral” mean the race is neutralized?

In any case, Jeff Vogel is hard core.

Anonymous

as a group and split on the downhill with an ambulance in the right lane. That’s not hard racing, that’s poor sportmanship.

Anonymous

C, speak with the race director after the race with your concerns. The protest period for results ends 15 minutes after results are posted.

I need this week’s Mega Millions numbers. After that I’ll buy you a beer. Actually I’ll buy you one anyway, thanks for taking pics today…

the hairy one

You might get lucky, and therefore need to shave your legs? How bout shaving your pu$$y while your at it. It’s bad enough you guys shave to ride a bike, now you shave to get laid.

Isaac Mizrahi

I disagree with JT, the new ChampSys kit needs work.
Pictures on cycling kits look as bad as the designs NBA teams tried a few years ago and the quality of the print is terrible. Bleed Bleed Bleed. Terrible.

Andy

Marco won’t have to pay for beer ever again. Seriously, everyone should buy Marco a beer every chance they get.

MQ

Hey so ok the bank is empty if you know what I mean. and I do like beer.
