From the pictures of the mishaps in races, it looked like a wild weekend.Â
Lisban Quintero won the CRCA A race, with Jonathan Bloom taking the B race and Ann Marie Miller winning the women’s race. Ryan Pettit won at Branch Brook.Â
Other details are unavailable. I don’t recognize the heavily clothed guys in the pictures from the Spring Series, so I will need help with their identities. I’m relying on the internet to fill in the gaping holes here, and yes, I already have all the Canadian “man drugs” I need already thank you.
Latest news: Looks like George Gyarmathy wins the 3/4ths Spring Series race and actually feels confident enough to celebrate.
Team Organic shots are here.

Right here, Mr B!
lol
Rest up man, hope everything works out for you and we see you back up and riding soon. Take care.
The crash shown on your front page was from the Spring Series cat 5 race. The first guy on the ground dropped it 5 meters after the line. Nice.
Another Brutal race in freezing cold and high winds. Luekens and Lindine 1-2 with Nick Bruno of WWV taking Aiden Charles of Nerac for 3rd in a 3 man sprint. The field was destroyed and guys trickled in in smally groups. Good race and great training.
Fantastic photos! you are the new Miss Graham Watson of cycling. Clear man!
thanks::)))
Who the hell is the guy with the Red hair that sits on the sidelines and yells into the mick system telling the riders with earphones what to do like he is coaching a pro squad at the Tour…isn’t this a course that you guys race a lot?…painfull, had to move to other side of course
Kyle Wolf speaking of Wolf has anybody seen the size of Greg Wolf this year! Can you say supersize! Best wishes to Mic G
you should have seen him two months ago… he has dropped like 15 lbs since then. great thing about greg you can laugh at his fatness to his face and he’ll laugh with you.
why can we all laugh about this guys fat but not ken harris’s helmet? laughing about someone’s figure seems to be a much more sensitive subject to me.
and what about the ‘cutioner? He looks syling even in the cold! Go Nacho!
I can generally tune out his mindless, nonsense constant blather, but it’s to the point that Phil and Paul just give out too much erroneous information.
Yesterday while broadcasting the time trial stage of the Criterium International, it’s raining and the ground is very wet. Paul says that the teams had a hard decision whether to use a “solid rear disk” because they are so slippery in the rain. Of course, with no hills or serious winds, every rider was using a rear disk wheel.
I know Phil and Paul are nice guys and tradition, but they are so senile and out of touch with modern day cycling they really have to go.
Gentle ribbing vs. anonymous sniping. If you want to make fun of Ken’s helmet do like Schmalz and identify yourself. That way Ken’ll know who to sucker punch. I only pray I’m there with a camera when he ambushes Schmalz.
are there more crashes in the early spring because we haven’t raced in awhile or cause we’re wearing 10 layers of clothing including mittens that keeps us from braking and hats that keeps us from hearing?
I lost a green & gray striped wool hat at the CRCA race, probably near the registration area. If you’ve seen it, please let me know. It has sentimental value.
So comments about Ken Harris helmet get deleted, but the Mexicutioner comments, those stay. Ok right, I got it.
btw, did everyone see new Empire recruit Jon Chodroff beat Tyler Hamilton and many other in an uphill TT at the San Dimas race! This kid was a cat 3 last year. Watch out.
if this guy was wearing a helmet like ken’s… could i make fun of him?
https://www.nyvelocity.com/slideshow/2118/ss3300824.jpg
also the below poster’s didn’t leave their name when they called GW fat.
just admit that you have ken’s back and are too busy to deal with this nonsense because you are changing the site address to crca.velocitynation.com
i agree ken gets a raw deal on this site and is often laughed AT rather than WITH. with that said his HELMET IS HYSTERICAL. i mean… can i just paper machete a penis and wear that as a helmet??
Is it legal in a road race? It looks like a TT helmet and I think they are illegal? I could be wrong…
For those of you that enjoyed getting beaten up in Pennslytucky, you’re gonna have to wait until next year.
Just the crit on Sunday.

18 lap break at bethel in 1/2/3 race, 9 guys, and Julio
newer TT helmets (not old style shells) legal in road races
also, if you don’t wear one while ‘participating in an event’ you can get DQ’d and have a $20 fine
‘Participating in an event’ =
“riding a bicycle in the vicinity of a race at any time between
the beginning of registration and the last awarding of prizes,
but does not apply to riding rollers or stationary trainers in
order to warm up.”
if you wear a TT helmet in a road race, the penalty is getting towel-snapped in the nyvelocity locker room
Any team using race radios at the local TRAINING criterium should collectively punch themselves in the face. I mean, how retarded is that? Honestly fellas, you can practically see all the way around the loop at Bethel – what are the walkie talkies for?
they should get penis helmets AND radios.
Sorry, but if you’re gonna show up in that thing, prepare to get mocked.
Perhaps if he starts winning on solo breakaways we will stop pointing and laughing at AeroKen and start imitating him, but until then, “the nail that sticks up gets hammered down.”
What is the distance for 1 lap there?
why not wear a TT helmet?
It’s just tacky man. Enough said.
My computer tells me its 2.2, but our beloved host, VCN has a course description:
http://www.velocitynation.com/fbf.htm
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Flat 2.3 mile rectangle. Very windy! Course can be rough and we strongly recommend not using lightweight wheels and tires.
wheels seem to hold up ok but definitely take their advice and use robust tires. in an average race there are a few flats, I once saw a guy flat BOTH tires at once when he hit a seam.
Se
Ken Harris’s helmet is retarded. If he wants to make such a fashion statement. he should do it elsewhere. Ken, just get over it and wear a normal helmet: didn’t Empire give you like 1 or 2?
Go ahead delete my post, NYVelocity?
for them to go back on the pledge this year to provide timely results.
Schmaltz — $100 to do Sandy Hook in a Devo helmet
i was right next to that beastly crash in the bethel 123, hope mike is okay.
hahah i saw that carrot-top guy, he was so freakin hyped for targettraining BETHEL RADIOS! YEAH!!!
Bless us with your super knowledge of dropping a hanger-on. LOL.
Tactical BS – or being known as a Piker…a decision every local cyclist has to make at one point?
Some heretofore unseen mean-spirited ridicule from you, Mr. Victory Salute Professor. “Aero Albino Dildo?” I thought you were above that, Mr. Professor.
Thanks for asking. I don’t have a lot of time to discuss tactics today, but Team Cinzano in the 1979 edition of Cinzano 100 highlights one particularly effective tactic.
formula 449 – i wrote the post w/ the primus quotation too if that makes you feel any better

Yeah, I just referred to myself in the third person. Hope everyone enjoyed the cold weekend of racing.
When you are winning Cat. 3/4 and even some 1/2/3 races as a Cat. 3, this is typically refered to as “Sandbagging”. What is up with this, Doctor?
Is “Westwood Had a Decent Weekend” the new “Adler Rode a Smart Race”?
Personally I just see Ken’s new phallic statement as a natural extension of the rest of the setup, including the absurdly high seatpost position (inspired by the Upton ‘use yur butt’ technique that I guess has some legitimacy), the bars taken from a childs bike to reduce weight and wind drag, the bike size itself (generally ridden by under 10 yr old leprechauns), and of course the no socks look, which I assume is also a weight and wind drag savings. Its all his right to use, and I would never tell him to change just to conform. Still pretty funny though.
i like turtles…
Are you kidding with that post. First, Bruno did not win Johnny Cakes he was third. He won Prospect. Clown!
Reread his post dbag
it’s just plain ridiculous in 34 degree weather.
I’m not saying anything about Ken’s helmet until JFT tells me what to think
if his feet aren’t cold, why is it ridiculous? Secondly, after a great weekend of racing, this is the best discussion we can come up with? Thirdly: to the illiterate moron bashing Will.O. – learn to read. It may be a little self-promoting, but his facts are right, and they did have a great weekend
ventilated cycling shoes with no socks in 34 degree weather going 25 mph for an hour or so and not have painfully freezing feet.

This “Hangover” forum should be called “Racing costumes and etiquette, or, the Turn of the Shrew”
Perhaps it would be interesting to, hmmm, discuss how the various races went down, team strategies, individual performances? There were some. Really.
I sympathize with you, however unless the format is changed, you don’t expect that to happen here in earnest. I encourage you to visit other team’s site as some team(ie Organics) offer a lot more productive stuff in that regards. Enjoy this site for what it offers – the pictures, some good interviews, tech infor and event announcements. You will drive yourself crazy, otherwise.
Pretty tough race with lots of tactics (for me just hanging on as long as possible). Breaks, attacks, sitting in, attacks, groups busting up and the rest doing a death march to the finish. Pretty cool course for a break because its only 6 miles long but easy to get out of sight from the pack. Keltic is riding very strong – look out for them at the big races (masters and 3s). Lindine and Luekens are a tough duo. Great race and good people. No yelling b/c its too cold, windy and fast to talk…
Finally, Nick Bruno may be one of the best local riders. He needs to get on a top team like Sakkonnett or Fiordifrutta. No disrespect to WWV those guys are animals but Nick is crazy fast in the hills and sprints and only 20.
I just tested positive for Cinnabon and have been forced to forfeit my 67th place in the 3/4
Please don’t take this as a burn, but have you been on this site before?
While it has some amazing content most of these Hangover pages are dedicated to grown men acting like teenagers while hiding behind anonymous posts.

Crowing about how hard Johnny Cake was
I just moved to NYC, and I want to start racing. Once this guy, Ken, at band camp, said bike racing is cooler than sitting on the break, then sprinting around for the NOT win, while npt getting gapped after eveyr rotation, then crashing after the finish line for no apparent reason, while using dope, being Mexican, wearing NO socks, using disk wheels in the rain, too wide/narrow handlebars, being too skinny/fat, riding too cheap/expensive bikes, while listening/wearing to ipod/race radio, getting timely race results, and so much more! You just have to race at the Rambles at 5am, and, and, and…did I miss something? Alder? Will O? Schmalz giving the finger? NYC v. the uncool world, cat. 1 v 2 v 3 v 4 v 5’s…JFT/Ugli/Cubi/Gacki/AVD/Powercranks…thanks for so much to learn about bike racing…

I am digging posting videos and seeing others do the same. A lot more fun than non-sense crap talk.
And doesn’t post it anonymously, like some of those anonymous coward b@stards around here:
“‘He does not give a show, he does not attack,’ whoever says this – and I’m thinking about one particular NY journalist here, using a very liberal definition of the word journalist – does not understand anything about cycling,” said Cadel Evans after winning the 8th Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali.’

Last time I checked Bethel was a bike RACE… stop bitching and race.
now THAT is how to post a comment. well f—ing done.
I’ve been meaning to talk to him about that. He should propably find a safe house or close relative he can stay with because he’s probably wanted for murder.
Sandbagging? Again? So your Will O’Donnell, you’ve entered nothing but 1/2/3 races so far this season. You’ve won at Branchbrook and Cape May in the 1/2/3. You were off the front for 40 miles at Prospect in the 1/2/3. I guess he’ll have to enter the Tour de France before the sandbagging bullshit stops.
Johnny Cakes
– Nick Bruno 3rd in the p/1/2/3
this kid is hot real talent nice racing with you in the break!
Give us a break. Everyone knows that O’Donnell, nice guy though he may be, is not long for the 3’s and would do fine right now in the 2’s or 1’s. You can see it from his results and his numbers.
Just curious – every sport has that age where you need to be on track or you are basically done, gymnastics and tennis is about 14 years old.
In cycling – if you are 25 and you are not on an official Pro or European pro team are you done?
Curious if any of the junior 19,20,21 guys that race in our races have a shot at being on the big scene one day….or if they were would they already be there?
He is not sandbagging when he wins Pro1-3 park races and TTs. He is sandbagging when he refuses to upgrade so he can do the Big races (Bear, Battenkill etc) as a 3. He has over 7 wins in 2007 and should be forced to race all races as a Cat2. He wants to race the hard races as a 3 and the TTs and park races that suit him as a Pro1-3. You cant have it both ways. He should upgrade because he is way better than every Cat3 in the area with the exception of maybe Ryan Pettit!
http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2008/apr08/apr01newsspecial
I wonder if it will be available on Time Warner cable channel
It’s only 9:54pm here, but I guess it is already April 1st somewhere.
“can’t have it both ways…”
Point well taken.
TTs don’t count for upgrading, so maybe he doesn’t have enough points yet.
Will O won 7 road races last year and who knows how many TTs. He is probably the best TTer in the NE (including 1s and 2s). Maybe Roger A or a few of the Empire guys could give him a run.
I am tired of reading about Will O.
Can we talk about someone else? How about “you”? Let’s us know what you are doing.
I posted the last time this came up and it was deleted. Not really sure why. Very few local races qualify legitimately for upgrade points, and obviously TTs don’t at all. That isn’t to say Will doesn’t have the points to, I have no idea. I’d bet he isn’t the runaway points gobbler these threads make it seem like.
He is definitely one of the strongest AROUND HERE, in a park, under 35 miles. I believe he has the right to see how he stacks up against a stacked field (cat 3) , in a race that lasts more than 1.5 hours, on a difficult course. If he blows away the group there, then yes he needs to upgrade. I would bet there are comparable cat 3’s out there, just not in Central Park. Because he won BB he needs an upgrade???? Get over it, it isn’t that hard to do well in our local races.
I love you all. The commentary here is so insightful. You guys are great.
APRIL FOOL!
Not exactly the most stimulating video – a TT – but for those curious, it also has my power numbers below

But a swing and a miss, Doctor…
just buy an ad already?
That’s about a Cat. 7 April Fool’s Day Joke….stick to the TTs, doc
Yeah that’s about as funny as Dane Cook farting in a bag
This might be the dumbest idea I’ve ever had. Why don’t we just ask Will what his goals are for this season?
He has already volunteered his numbers, it might not be such a stretch to ask if he intents to apply for his upgrade and why he is still racing in the 3s.
So I ask, Dr. William O’Donnell, do you plan on getting your 2? If you are not could you please explain to the peanut gallery why?
Yes, I will be moving to South America. I am going to start a coffee growing business with all the prize money I won. Then I am going to Thailand to learn the Asian massage technique so that I can be the official therapist for you chumps. Please go away you Will O lovers and haters.
why you think it’s cool to stay a cat 3 and then win all the Pro 123 races in the area? Maybe we’re missing something. Do you want to win a big out of town race as a 3? Even though I would be very envious of you I can assure you that you will score way more brownie points if you do it as a cat 2 in a pro 123 out of town race. So come on, out with it, why not upgrade? Take Rashad and Rufus’ examples. They both upgraded at the first opportunity they got and suffered badly in some of the out of town races but Rashad’s leading the Spring series now and will probably do well in out of town races this year. You obviously worked damn hard. Why stay a three with the rest of us envious bastards?

Those guys are flat out fast (most of them) and love bike racing and training. Nothing wrong with that. I suspect that Will will upgrade after Battenkill along with Freifelder who is getting close to the mandatory upgrade (2 wins at Bethel this year) both in breks. They are all positive in there training and racing. A bit over the top at times but I would take them over most of the wannabe racers on this site any day. Keep it up and good luck in the 2s.
none of us really believe that WILL O quit, do we?
What happened to the break in the PP 1/2/3 race? Was it caught in the late laps and were 1st and 2nd place remaining from the break or a late attack?
1st and 2nd place were from the break – the break had up to 11 guys but looked like it split up with about 4 laps to go – not sure when those two guys left the field. Foundatio and Mengoni were helping the field chase, and then Igor left the field with about 2 laps to go and rode through most of the break for 3rd. Most guys in the break were swept up on the last lap I think.
Also, could you guys slamming on the so-called sandbaggers at least sign your names. If you’re so right (I’m not saying you’re not) why not use your name(s).
I meant “not sure when those two guys left the BREAK”
Will will be doing tri’s. He’s already signed up for Lake Placid and has withdrawn from Battenkill.
JFT will you please weigh in on the Harris helmet. My sources say its made of marzipan
the break so it would not make sence that they helped Mengoni to bring back the break. If they did, Scott should have a word with them. He was solid in the break and worked really hard. Unless they only started when they got word that Scott was not with the two who attacked.
Perhaps they were blocking, but the pack strung out more their guys were on the front
gave me a hard time with my upgrade from 5 to 4. YES from 5 to 4. They told me that I would need a greater variety of races than the local parks, and that they would not approve the next upgrade without that condition met. Why is it wrong for Will to want to see how he stacks up at a more competitive, longer, harder race as a 3? This is a guy who excels at 1 hour efforts-let’s see how he fares at Battenkill, or Bear. He is obviously not sandbagging around here, racing in the p/1/2 races. On top of that, he is obviously not going pro anytime soon, holds a full time job, and has limited time to train, why does he have to move up? Again, be envious, but it doesn’t take a great rider to do well in our local park races, not that Will isn’t a great rider.
Wills Odonnells, please come baaaaacccckkkkkk. Now you guys have done it. For reals this time. He is gone for sure and now they might shut down the whole thing. No more Peleton East, no more WWV. Then what?? Without all those guys givin back to cycling we are all gonna be screwed. Nice job. I hope you’re all happy. I hope you’re pleased with yourselves. You wouldn’t know a good thing if you made it yer homepage.
On the upside though, there should be some sweet ebay deals to be had on Soloist SLC SL training bikes, SRM’s, powercranks and ceramic headset bearings from the soon to be defunct WWV team.
The LA’s of NY and NJ do the upgrades. USCF is too abstract. It’s either Alan Atwood or Paula Grill in NJ.
Is Alan making it hard for 5’s?
But a guy like Alan should not be doing upgrades. It should be done by someone who has actually raced and understands how hard it its to finish in a leading pack of 20 in a race like Bear, GMSR, etc. IF you finished say 18th in every big race around for a year as a 4 (all within a minute or less of the winner) you should get a discretionary upgrade. Those results are much harder than say 5 wins in Prospect park as a 4 if you are a solid sprinter. A guy who has never been in the red or on the verge of puking on a climb to stay with the front group has no clue. That is why Dieter Drake was great for upgrades. Hes a racer…
i heard a rumor that the CRCA is being disbanded. a small group of private investors have purchased the rights to the 110 year old cycling club.
in their first press release earlier today they have chosen to disband the club board of directors, it’s memberships and the corresponding sub-teams. The reasoning for this dramatic act is in response to the local based web-site NYVelocity.com and the negative comments posted on many of the sites pages.
will you dorkpiles realize that was an april fools gag? jeez
post results in a timely fashion?
“But a guy like Alan should not be doing upgrades. It should be done by someone who has actually raced and understands how hard it its to finish in a leading pack of 20 in a race like Bear, GMSR, etc.”
If you want to upgrade, get the points. If that requires a serious campaign of hitting the right races over the course of a year, do it. It’s not comlicated.
Dorkpiles???? Is that what its come to? Dorkpiles?
you don’t need to have given birth to know how to deliver a baby. My upgrade issues were with Judy Miller, haven’t tried for an upgrade since.
are way off based. They both have invested a lot of effort into this area’s cycling scene. Frankly, I applaud them for putting up with whining bitches such as you and still showing up with a smile on their face.
These people take interest in seeing riders develop and get better. if they give you a hard time, its for a reason. go out and race your bike and stop whining about the good people who make it possible.
I nominate ‘no offense’ for dumbest post of the year so far. Alan’s been around racing for years, has the respect of many many riders you can’t hold a candle to.
I’ve noticed a lot of folks fixating on Bear Mountain and a couple other races. Question … do you think that the market for well run road races within 100 miles of NY is being met by promoters? Is supply meeting demand? If there was a race like Bear every weekend would you drop the dough and make the drive?
There is so much bitching about Spring Series, etc., but at least those guys are putting on a race.
my comment about Judy miller off base? It wasn’t an opinion piece, but a fact derived from a conversation I had with her. She granted upgrade, begrudgingly, stating I did not have enough variety in my program; only local park races. She also said she would not approve another upgrade for me without more breadth to my schedule. How is this off base? That being said, I do think Alan is about as great of a rep as we can have in the sport.
It would be great if there were more nearby road races. Imagine if there were a race in Harriman once a month. Unfortunately the permits are hard to come by, as are the people to run the events.
i believe the asshole is the “No Offense” post who said alan was unqualified to judge an upgrade request. i mean you could post your name and we would know that you only made one of the three anon comments and not the others…
cause they don’t make us. I did however, vote for a sign in sight when they asked. Why would I post multiple times, bash Alan in 1 post, and then praise him in the latter 1/2 of my response post? I just reiterated my experience with my upgrade from 5 to 4, that was all. When Alan was attacked I stated my opinion because I think he is invaluable to our local scene. I have better things to do then respond to my own posts. Not much better, because I am posting.
Was an April Fools joke you fools!
i respond to my own posts sometimes. it’s fun. sometimes i even respond and put someone else’s name down!!!
sorry bitches, upgrade points ARE fair. if you SUCK, you don’t get your upgrade. finish 18th place? HAHA!! finish top 7 next time.
STOP BITCHEN!!
Can everyone with a title such as Dr., JD, CFP or CPA please sign in with these letters? We don’t want to isolate Will any further.
Why do you want to upgrade if you can only finish 18th in your target races? Sounds like you’re in the appropriate category now.
Upgrade system is fair enough, made easier this year. If you can’t manage to top 7 a race, you don’t get your upgrade. If you can’t top 10 bear mountain, THEN DON’T DO IT! Obviously you aren’t strong enough to place in that type of race. Figure out what you are good at, if anything at all (as a cat 4, most likely you aren’t good at much) and do races that focus on that. Plain and simple. There appears to be plenty of non-sprinter 1s and 2s that somehow managed to get the required points.
Generally the guys that upgrade fast have a acceptable sprint, once they upgrade beyond 3s they quickly realize they aren’t actually any good at it.
those of you with transportation should check these out for harder training races. It can be easier to get a much better workout there than at the CRCA races. Smaller fields mean you have to work more and make it easier to learn to read the race. There is a steep but short hill that you can’t drift like on Harlem hill. Sure you can pull the pack around in central park and get a good workout too, but you’ll kill your chances. In CP, unless you’re a sprinter it’s get in a break or you may as well ride to the Spoon.
