Section head text.
Saturday is the race for the dignity of the Category 3 peloton, the Calvert-Toefield Memorial. The cat 4 field gets a 3 minute head start n the 3s, and then it’s up to the 3s to salvage their respectability by catching the 4s.
Sunday is the Silvermine Time Trial at Harriman State Park. They have 247 entries so far! That’s a lot of aero-nerding! Hmmm, Empire or Westwood?

First
are any CRCA teams folding this year?
3rd – made the podium!
just jumping in here in case First fails the drug test
Still in the money
Westwood for sure……then again TT -who cares?
6th gets points, in case 4th is correct.
have been implicated in Operation Velo and, thus, disqualified from this competition.
woohoo!!
Just out of the money again – this is like being Mihael…
yesterday but this will make for a very exciting TTT. I know that none of you will be interested but this afternoon at 3pm my team is taking on the mighty English (defending champs) in a group match in the Rugby world cup in France. May the best team win and may the English loose by at least 20 points.
westwood…
in the park yesterday. Full tt bikes trying to kill someone.
good
who cares?
because the cat 3s suck
AND dISCO HAS CUM TO THE FRUNT TO SQUASH THE RESISTANCE!
nice spelling pal – like school on Sunday…no class
Typical PP races the 4s sit in and wait for the sprint. Only a handful of 4s work. This will be the first time the whole 4 group will have to take turns working at the front.
Anyone have any experience with these frames. Look nice but cant find much on the them in terms of quality and ride.
last year 4s where caught by only five 3s…
tomorrow will be a 15 lap parade.
the 4s will catch the 3s
Todays….worst thread in the woooorld!
Clearly offseason
the 4s lap the 3s.
I just posted SIlvermine Start times. 30second intervals for all , a few gaps for some needed seperation, a few people in different areas so they can do the Team race as well….cant please everyone and i think we did pretty well.
I came on here just now and saw the fun banter yesterday about WV and Empire or NY Teams. Everyone i am sure knows there is tons of cross respect between us NJ riders and the NY crowd…big respect. after all , this just about having some heavy duty fun! but of course at this late stage fo the season, its fun to have a little trash talk amongst top competitors.
While this might be our home turf, our race, and while we could have justified WVelo Zero (aspholm, troy and mgisler) being the last on the road…we decided to give Empire the honor of being last up. Its a coin flip and i think thats the fairest way to go. You come to my house to play, we give you best dibs.
Somewhere near the end of that TTT list, i would imagine me, odonnel and cosgrove could have justified a slot, but we gotta be first off in the TTT grouping so we can get back, quickly put the bikes away and deal with the administrative stuff , getting results lined up.
I’m really excited to see the battle between WVZero and Empire as well as others. DOnt discount my squad or many others. They dont gift you a win, you gotta earn it.

South Africa won 36-0 scoring 3 tries (touch downs) and the rest of the points with penalties. England was outplayed but seeing that most of the guys in the pub (Baker Street) were from England it was good to be from South Africa. I almost felt like shouting my famous Afrikaans word (motherf***r)

Navigators Insurance ending after 14 seasons
By Mark Zalewski, North American Editor
The longest running professional team sponsorship in American cycling will come to an end this season as Navigators Insurance will not renew for 2008, a team release said Friday. The global insurance company has sponsored the New Jersey-based professional team bearing its name for 14 years, making it the longest continuous team sponsorship in American cycling history and one of the longest running in the world.
Director sportif Ed Beamon told Cyclingnews that the search for a replacement sponsor has been unsuccessful, but that it is not over. “I’m still trying to put something together,” said Beamon. “I’m going to go down with the sinking ship if I have to!” he said jokingly as a metaphor.
Numerous current riders have been announcing their departure for other teams next season over the past month, signaling that management informed riders well in advance of the likelihood of the end. “We have been trying to keep the program intact as much as possible, but it’s beyond that,” said Beamon. “We’ve been trying to help guys get contracts who don’t have one yet too.
Beamon said he is being realistic about the chances for resurrecting the team for next season and is starting to look beyond. “If things go well we will have perhaps a smaller program and keep guys on the team. If it doesn’t come together I’ll just keep working towards 2009.”
The current climate of teams and sponsors parting ways could be a symptom of the negative publicity, something that affected Navigators. “We had some really good opportunities in the last couple of years but it’s been hard this year with all the negative publicity,” he admitted. “It’s a tough time to go out shopping right now.”
The team is currently racing at both the Tour of Missouri and Tour of Britain this week – with both races serving as the final curtain call for the team.
Was not due to bad press but more due to the company growing exponentially and having pressure from Ds&Os and shareholders to cut costs. This decision was best for the company but sad for cycling.
James Joesph won Calvert-Toefield. Please start the hate.
In that case, did he win the big-ass trophy? Or the big ass-trophy?
Top 10 were all 3s, I believe.
And James did work, definitely more than many others
so fucking annoying, shouting at everyone all race long.
is important here.
Had to miss the race. Good for JJ. But was he wearing *the* jersey?
Calvert-Toefield Memorial

77 Starters
1. James Joseph (Team United)
2. Bryan Hass (Zephyr Cycling)
3. Richard Gonzalez (CRCA/Global Locate)
4. Johan Burrowes (Team United)
5. Hammean Walker (USI)
6. Gavin Robertson (CRCA/Global Locate)
7. Rich Foley (Keltic Construction)
8. Tadeusz
Yeah James took took a pull…..on the first lap!
No hate here. The guy knows how to race a bike.
the Cat 3’s or the Cat 4’s?
both fields seemed about equal
but they definitely wore down towards the end – kind of long for a park race.
Seems to me the fields wear not equal. The 3s closed a 3min gap. No way could the fours close a gap that big.
I said “wear” me smart
I believe the question was about the number of riders, not about relative strength.
guy who came in 2nd was at the back the entire race, until when it mattered. smart guy
The fields looked definitely looked about equal; the 3’s were riding at a monstrous pace.
I’m a 4 that started late with the 3’s, I was able to stay with them for 10 laps working the front quarter. I was fueling up and the next thing I knew I was off the back. I yo-yoed for a lap and then the pack started getting smaller and smaller. It was a great opportunity to flow with a higher class, too bad I got dropped.
I feel like I earned it by riding an hour in the rain and the getting a flat on flatbush. I missed my start but I had to get some racing in…I waited all week…..
MYR, that was a good experience you had– stepping up a bit higher, to a new challenge. I’m happy for you.
I didn’t think it was monstrous…definitely felt a little slower than a 1/2/3 field.
however it was a long race.
Did anyone see the guy that came in 5th move up on the last almost the whole back side in the Joggers lane?.
Westwood is full self glorification…
Where are the women on their team? None Zero
There’s a reason for that… they could care less.
what the hell was that nonsense????
Equal? As in if the 3’s started 3 min before the 4’s they would have finished over 7 min ahead.
Everybody knows that there is nothing to do in NJ but look at your daily training numbers, upload them for the world to be awed, or film yourself racing so that you and the world can watch yourself win, in the event you do – and they do win, those boys.
I think about 25% of the 3 field put their face in the wind at some point. The rest of em’…..just along for the ride.
The 4’s blew the race. Ther were too many 4’s taking monster pulls and disrupting the pace. Younger less experienced riders were are very stronger but can’t right smoothly or in a straight line are the downfall of any paceline. The 4’s started hard like they were doing a 30 mile race, 50 miles is a whole different thing.
And for the record last year “5 3’s did not catch the 4’s” The 4’s won the race with good organisation.
seems like 219 suffers from back of the pack syndromes. look at these boards or any race that we do in the park or within the club. there is a host of adrenaline, ego and performance. to some degree, we’re all a bunch of thoroughbreds banging heads, and sometimes egos and intensity can get in the way. i cant speak to westwood or they operate, but you darn well better have some ego, some intensity and a belief in self-worth to perform in PP or CP or frankly ANY race found anyplace throughout. guys all happy about middle pick results might do well seeing how winners ride and hold their heads high. people can bag on empire, adler, westwood, whomever…bag on them all you want. they are working to get stuff done.
i have a feeling 219 does little for himself, or anyone else for that matter.
just my 2 cents on the matter.
has been racing bikes almost 20 years. yeah, I’d say he’s learned a couple of things.
‘m with 912 because if i didnt hate those WVelo guys so much, i’d love to be riding with them. ODonnell is not the only guy that loves ODonnell. He’s been in about 4 or 5 of our park races and everytime he’s full attack. I loved his two helmet cam videos though I would loved him more if he had found a way of getting footage of me getting dropped by him the one time i tried to jump his wheel.
enough hate, more love. the sport needs it.
Self-glorification: calling yourself a Dr. when in reality you are a chiropractor, useful as that noble practice may be.
Self-gratification: chiropractic (Greek: ‘done by hand’)
O’Donnell is kicking some NYC a** on about 2 hr sleep half the time.
It’s not because his wife is having their first child – it’s solely to avoid confusion with Schmalz.
http://www.danschmatz.missingsaddle.com/2007/09/15/end-of-the-road/
Doctor = from Greek: “to teach” nothing wrong with that. Just as many stupid doctors as ineffective chiropractors.
total clown and even more of a jackass on Gimbels. Got his ass kicked by Correa a few weeks ago on the Gimbels long ride. Moving up in the joggers lane. Giving USI a bad name
the inevitable digression of a good thread to a bad thread. we NYers have too much hate. this went from being a good blog with value to valueless. odonnell and westwood should have listened earlier. go get your own board and avoid us. we’re not worthy.
wow. definition of hate. whats even scarier is that someone has the intimate knowledge of ODonnell enough to know he is a chiropractor and still has the chutzpah to bag on his being a dr. how much more of a scum of the earth can you be than to know a guy well enough to know his pedigree, to know his results, to feel comfortable enough to post them up here, and to bag on a dude who has done nothing but being a great rider all season long…and for being what, a chiropractor?
these forums are great. we all get to witness the various levels of social grace. 438 gives us a good look at he barrel bottom.
i guess that happens when you watch ODonnell win all spring at branchbrook, and elsewhere throughout the year.
Train harder hate less. hating is easy.
“thoroughbreds banging heads, and sometimes egos and intensity can get in the way”
yeah, that comment is so true
WV should rename their club to Ego Velo.
We are so great! … Look Ma, watch me again.
The Westwood guys are great. They race hard, they’re nice, they’re fair, and they run a great event. Started on time, results were up really quickly. Lots of food before and after. Stop bagging on those guys.
Like an idiot, I forgot to check the ITT results, but I think it was Aspholm 1st, Lundgren 2nd. Zmolik snapped his steerer tube warming up at 30 mph, managed to hang on to the bars and brake enough to topple over and not hurt himself. Empire wins TTT with Loehner and Margarite, I think by 18 seconds, over Aspholm/Gisler/Kimball, Goldman/O’Donnell/Cosgrove 3rd.
anyone who bags on WV ought to have showed up today and seen the class act. exactly as previously stated, plenty of food, music, timing results were up in 10minutes with just a few changes. they were gracious and had swag for tons of people, non winners, tires, accelerade, i got 2 jugs for just helping clean up.
and they clocked some super fast times.
FYI, wv’s Lanenburg or something like that won the OVERALL, from one of the masters categories, snipping Asphom by a few, then the usual suspects, Odonnel, Lingren, Goldman, Kimball. in the Team category, Empire won in a tight fun battle. about 100 people cheering on the sidelines with stop watches the minute Aspholm’s team rolled thru. was a narrow win but a great win. Odonnel’s TTT squad just missed out to Asphom/Kimball by 8 or 10 seconds.
THe juniors were flying.
weather was perfect.
one of my favorite events of the year despite the fact i was a pig on the bike.
I left before results were posted. Does anyone know when they will be online? Or better yet, does anyone know the junior results?
What brand? …freakin’ scary.
Cervelo.
I think alot of people showed up due to the fact
that Bear was cancelled last week, last races for the season…
Agree with Andy, the Westies are good guys, put on a nice event and are great racers–across disciplines. Troy is a terror on a mountain bike.
First, a more thorough post on the days’ events can later be found on the wv site, and hopefully more riders will share their thoughts.
Personally, i really enjoyed working with Cosgrove and many others to put forward a nice event. Weather cooperated, and it seemingly went off without a hitch. It was pretty cool from my perspective, seeing it all come together. The volunteers and the officials and the riders made it a spectacular day.
Quick results can be found by goinng to the http://www.westwoodvelo.com website, and in teh Banter thread i think we posted a link to the results page. I’ll clean it up tomorrow when i can see straight.
Its irrelevant and not worth pushing here, but i did just read some of threads bashing a bit on WV and ODonnell. We dont claim to be for everyone, nor want to be for everyone..but we train, race and play hard and fairly. I think we try to be good sportsmen and give a little back.
I’ve known Will ODonnell for a few years and proudly call him a teammate, someone who’s been able to go from being a 5 to a top ranked 3, one of the nations’ best TT’ers in just 18 months. And he is always the first to talk team, to help another out, and to give his best when it counts.
I think someone bagging on his profession is totally uncalled for, and frankly, is something that would not occur if Andy took the additional step of making posts non-anonymous. People say stuff in emails and on threads like this that they would not say in person. Im not adverse to it either. But angst and animosity like that kills what should be tons of great energy that we could be giving to the sport, instead of mashing each other.
Take 2 minutes to say hi to ODonnell and i bet your position on him would change in a heart beat. he’s my friend, so yeah, i take issue with any attack on him.
results are up. great day of racing.
thx for coming out.
_steve
..anyone who has ever hung around a TT waiting hours for results to be posted will join me in urging the region’s promoters to adopt Westwood’s TT results system (which I think they’ve offered before). Great race – nice job guys.
Liked the (new) course, and very well run race from beginning to the posting of results. Look forward to next year.
software for the TT was built by me, my company, just for fun. really nic for setting up the race, etc. and works like a charm for capturing electronic finishing times. just a laptop and microsoft access. could be adapted for road races, maybe, but i’m just too lazy and we dont promote any road races.
any club, njba or otherwise that would like it, shoot me an email (steve@trademanage.com) off line and i’ll forward to you. free license to use in a non-commercial fashion.
one person can manage who thing and if done right, results are basically instantaneous. we could have dont interim results but i just cringe to think about running any unnecessary process or report WHILE the main race is still on. only delay of 4 minutes was checking the USCF officials manual handwritten finish times against our electronic times and 4 adjustments that we felt were necessary.
regards,
sg
steve, no sense wasting energy fending off the BS from the haters. you guys put on a fun event and deserve nothing but thanks and props for it–low-key and friendly yet very well organized at the same time. just how it should be.
These guys put on a great event –
I was not fortunate enough to race do to a snapped derailer cable as I was warming up, but I stuck around long enough to see what a nice job you WV guys did. See you next year.
Electronic timing refers to automatic electronic recording of finish times. This requires the use of a photo-cell ,tapeswitch ,chip or some such device to record the result. How the result is displayed or transmitted to a computer is beside the point.
Since Steve said he only used a laptop and access , I do not think this was electronic timing.
Not dissing your event at all, it sounds like it was very successful and well run. Just trying to clarify differences in timing Professional TT’s and track events generally use tape switches to get accurate result for front wheel. Chips placed on the bike can not be used for accurate TT timing.
100% correct. our software basically is just a “database” where we can “CLICK” a mouse/enter button as a rider blows past start. it auto ‘starts ‘ the riders clock and we click to end. we also have ability to manually key in manual times from the officials, since they still love manual times and its a good idea to do so incase your laptop melts down at the wrong moment.
but yes, the finish is by ‘eye’ and clicking a button. its pretty darn close.
there are systems out there with chips, like many of the Triathlons hve. those have such huge turnouts that most Tris, and i dont want to mistate if i’m wrong, but i believe most tri’s hire out the time keeping process to professional time keeping companies who charge good money. those chip systems are like 10, 15gs for 200 units. the guys NJBA had surplus funds 2 years ago and came close to buying such a system, but who to administer/handle it.
i think wehat we have is close enough, but i guess if someone was within a second or two then it might be far better to have it all electronic, IF it were to work right, if the ‘photocell’ actually worked right.
heck we could deifnately build an API for that, but i think the idea mainly was not that ‘by eye’ was not good enough, but the process once done, took too long.
i was at some good TT’s that were really fun riding, but we stood around for literally 90 minutes waiting for results. that shouldnt occur. in total, id’s ay ALL the njba results were up quick and easy. bob carey and jim bernstein, and myself, have all put in a lot of energy to try different things to ‘computerize’ results.
tt’s are easy. the road race software w ith same day registrations is far more complex.
thx again for a great event. done for the night. fo rthose who wrapped up their seasons today…THX for an amazing season of highs and lows!
for those gearing up for CX (NOT ME!!!), get amped. i’ll be cheering you on.
Did you ever listen to your parents if you can’t say something nice donot say anything at all. Shut up and stop crying, next time you put on the race if you can due better. Great Job Team Westwood!!!!!!!!
money changes everything…
Cycling is the new golf? We wish. Tiger Woods won the Player’s championships yesterday and in the process he also won the first ever FedEx cup. His prize money for the event was a little over $1,2m and a cool $10m for winning the FedEx cup which was contested over the last 4 tournaments of which he won 2 and was second or 3rd in one of them. He did not play in the first one. His total prize money for the season (excluding the $10m for the FedEx cup) was more than $10m bringing his direct earnings (non-endorsement) to more than $20m for the season. Golf has such a good name out there and I wish we could get some of that for cycling. FedEx has put up $35m just for the prize money for the FedEx cup, probably more than all sponsorship money in cycling in the entire USA for a year. No doping scandals I suppose.
Read an interview with Gary Player where he stated that the use of HGH and steroids in golf is commonplace, and everyone knows it. The PGA doesn’t have the knowledge, stomach, or interest to test for dopers.
Amazing. Must have some effect on there bellies too because some of those guys are fat.
