For sure in a stage race it’s worth looking at the rules and time cuts very carefully. For example, I think the Fitchburg circuit race is run under criterium rules, so getting dropped and lapped is not a big problem in terms of making the time cut if you can hang in the field on after getting caught. Dependig on what field you’re in, getting lapped a few times might allow you to continue the next day.
Getting lapped in the Fitchburg road race in the Pro/1 field is ok– the time cut was 51 minutes. Since all riders have to finish on the same lap, lapped riders do one fewer.
cheating is cheating
in a race, especially a hard race like Longsjo.
But getting dropped and then intentionally tricking the referees about it so they don’t pull you or mark you down as lapped is quite another. Not good.
I don’t know which Spider did so I’m not commenting on him specifically.
no one cares if you take a year off or if you’re dropped or not. it’s about you jumping bcak in the race after your dropped.
in the pro-1 and cat 2 race at fitchburg. including but not limited to: gratuitous feed hill speed bottles by “famous” pros, sitting out a lap or two in the road race and then getting back on the bike and heading up the finish climb, leaving a valve open to get an easy instant flat in order to take a free lap in the crit. getting dropped and lapped in the crit is not illegal or illogical in a stage race. “jumping back in” has all sorts of permutations. if an official saw it then spider lost time, if he didn’t so what? he wasn’t contending gc anyway.

I agree that you can do park races/floyd as a 3 on 8 hours a week, especially if you are a good sprinter. But I don’t think you can be competitive at Bear Mt. or Battenkill on that
Gavi is a NJ resident yet he races with a Canadian license as he was born in Canada. Gavi is on his way Canadian nationals this weekend where he’ll be doing the U23 race and the elite race.
The rest of the Sakonnet team is racing twice on Saturday, 5 guys in the Lou Maltease and then 8 guys at the Iron Hill criterium Saturday night. The Iron Hill race is part of the USA criterium series and Sakonnet is ranked in the overall competition. There’s 10k up for grabs Saturday night in the Pro event at Iron Hill.
I am a local Cat 2 (former 1)and a full time resident physician (so I am like Loehner, only slower on the bike and a less talented physician) who started this season after not riding for two years. You need 10-15 hours per week to be a competent regional Cat 2. Some weeks are longer, some shorter, but most of us that race P1/2 races are not putting in 17-20 hrs a week during the season unless there happens to be time off or a standout week. For most of us, even a lot of Cat 1’s, the day job still takes precedence.
You can race as a 3 who places pretty consistently on 8-10 hours/wk. 17-20 is too much! That being said, give me 20 hours of free time a week and I will happily spend them on two wheels.

typical in-season week: 10-12 hours
key race weeks: less hours
heavy training week early season: 12-14hr
big training weeks (involving some time off from work) in the base season and maybe again midyear: 15-20 hours.

I know several Cat 3’s (top ten riders) and some very competitive Masters, ten hours a week seems to be the average.I do 6 – 8 hours a week ( I’m basically a pack-fill Cat 4, a couple of top tens each year).Would love to hear from some of the better riders as to hours, mileage, and intensity.
17-20 hours to be a 3? Are you serious? Many good 3s don’t even get 10 hours per week.
i’m pretty sure flaherty isn’t doing u23 nationals. the kid did the crca race last wkend straight from a concert. and is working full time at an architecture firm. i wish i was 20 again.

I’m a cat-1 and I seldom ride that much (only during certain endurance-preparation periods). Maybe you should re-think your training programme, and economize.
Riding as a 3 is 17-20 hrs of riding per week add on 30% more to become a CAT 2 – Thats a part time job – most CAt 2 races are generally 30% longer than Cat 3 races Most guys really just do not have the time to do this

In my limited experience, 3 races are longer, more competitive, safer (usually), and racers are friendlier (usually). Also, no rush to register, later start times, better prize money (not that it matters). Finally, 3s are better looking, smarter and more fun.
Raced against him at Williams Crit. Strong guy and that race was no joke. Upgrading seems to be a major focus of new races these days. Would you rather be a decent 4 or a shit 3? Unless you can hang with the next level why bother besides better start times. The races are all just as fun.
Why do you think Maltese will come down to a sprint finish?
Question, why do a racers points count toward there ranking when they upgrade. I see some new cat 3s that are ranked then some guys that have been 3s for a while. The points system is impossible to figure out… By the way if Rufus upgraded, whats up with Conn Coast guys not upgrading (JPK and RM)?
i just moved up one place in every race now!
Paul is riding again but i’m not sure he’ll be on form. I would never bet against Jermaine Burrowes though. He’s tearing it up these days.

Taylor is a top-notch Master’s rider but not a factor in a race that will come down to a sprint finsih.

A real sprinter will sandbag everyday stage up until the one he has a shot of winning. It makes sense Perez was 30 minutes back in the Fitchburg RR and it doesn’t matter because he won a stage.

Knowing how to guage your effort on Cats Paw is key to winning a sprint in CP. History shows most open races in CP finish in a sprint.
The fastest sprinter in CRCA (King) should be the favorite.
Bandits is the only all CRCA team ranked higher than United. Lisban and Sakonnet don’t do CRCA races. JKIA will be dangerous in a likely sprint finish.
But I’ll take advantage of your CRCA centric worship and take $100 on United Homes. Those guys are really good.

Sakonnet is not really local becouse their riders come from all over the country??!! Blanco is from Cuba and lives in Miami I believe and Perez came from DR few months ago. Now that is local. BTW calling Mengoni is just wrong, becouse they do not race like one. They race like bunch of individuals, some of them very good, wearing the same clothes. And lastly, being the best CRCA team means very little to anybody who races outside of the city on regular basis, becouse they know that the quality level is very different.
Had about 100 rider on the line.
About 40~50 finished in the front group.
They only gave results to the top 20.
As stated below, Mengoni won a stage in the Pro-1 at Fitchburg and got several top tens as well. The only other local team in the Pro-1 race is the CRCA registered Sakonnet team which isn’t really a local team as their riders come from all over the country but they still have a local connection and should be mentioned. Sakonnet scored 2 top 10 stage finishes and 11th overall in GC, not bad for a group of kids.
Mengoni still kicks Sakonnet though as was seen at Harlem. If you are to be considered the best local team you must race with the best and that’s in the Pro-1 field at big races or at Elite Nationals (who’s registered there).
Who’s the best CRCA team is another matter.

If its true about the Champ-sys rider thats really sad. That guy and anyone who pulls that crap should be suspended and his team should be penalized as well. However, I was not there and am not giving and merit to what alllegedly happened.
Why just penalize the rider and team? Penalize his fans too, and his parents for raising him wrong. DQ me from writing on this site and for wearing clothes made by his sponsor. We’ve got to cut down on crap like that. Otherwise we set a bad example for the children. Since 9/11 everything has changed. Think of the children. Won’t someone please think of the children!

while watching the cat 2’s at fitchburg, we saw raj (aka spider) from champion get dropped from the crit twice, leave the course, circle down a side block and then hop back in a lap or two later, just to get dropped again. at floyd this is vaguely tolerable, at fitchburg it’s just sad and dangerous.
now if only he’d cover my marshalling…
I have to second (or third) the well-deserved props for Zmolik. Very good rider all around. Also quite funny even in the middle of tough racing. Made for some amusing exchanges during the road race at Fitchburg.

I don’t get the hate. Remember he won the Cat 3 Bear Fall race a couple of years back by about 4 minutes BY HIMSELF.
And he is a nice guy.
Zmolik’s progress has been way more steadier than a guy like, say, Will Riffelmacher, who went from cat 5 to 2 in like 13 months.
Someone earlier in this thread mentioned that CJ’s blog brings a lot of humor and humility to an all-too-often snooty, elitist sport. And that someone is right.
Look, I don’t really follow cycling. To me, it’s not accessible because too often the people who are the public faces of it seem like real jerks.
Anyone who would take the time and go out of their way to bash someone who has a blog about how excited they are to be a part of something they care about only proves this stereotype true.
CJ’s my best friend. I only pay attention to cycling because of how excited he is over it. The enthusiasm is infectious, and sure, I don’t really care about the specifics of this fake sport (teehee), but I’m at races cheering him (and probably many of you) on because my friend makes me realize that it isn’t fake.
Your sport could use more people like him and less people like the ones so busy hating on his blog. You don’t like it? Don’t read it. Act like an adult.

NYers did weel in this hilly 4 day Stage Race that has some deep fields.
Rafferty and O’neill in the 50’s, Settel won the 40+TT and Ted Neu was top 10, and Lattanzi was top10 in the 30’s with a 2nd in the crit.

Fitchburg TT was uphill for 5.5 out of the 6.55 miles. Not really a TT’ers course. That is how the specialists get their butts kicked.

The very best way to break into a sport that has a reputation of being elitist is to get some results, show some modesty, and generally act like a good sport. Swearing at dog owners and bragging about it isn’t a good start IMHO.

C race may be uninteresting to some, but I spent 1.5 hours in between tempo and over threshold and suffered just like you. All of the A riders I’ve met riding in the park have been way too generous, secure, and classy to make comments like that, so I’m guessing anon C haters are Cat 4 pack fill.
You guys finished with many solid results. You guys looked really strong in the crit! Keep it up!

Becky Koh finished a very good 12th place in 1/2 at Fitchburg. She even beat some of the Targetraining “pros”.
Amaury Perez won the final Pro/1 crit stage. Alberto Blanco was 3rd in stage 2 and finished 12th overall.

Maria Quiroga took 4th in ITT, 4th in Road Race and 4th in GC. Cecelia Pleva took 6th in the Road Race and 4th in Circuit Race, finishing 7th in GC, Elena Leznik took 8th in the Road Race, finishing 10th in GC.

Zmolik smoked the cat.2 TT for 4th place. His time would have left him in about 11th or 12th in the Pro race. WillRiff finished a couple seconds back in the cat.2s for 6th place. Guy East took 7th in the pro TT. The winner of the junior race wouldve been top 10 in the pros.
Circuit race: Zmolik attacked a lot, Mike Margarite did most of the race without a rear derailleur shifting between 39×11 and 53×11. Martin from Mengoni took 2nd. In the pro race Alberto Blanco took 3rd. Guy East 4th. I think Euri took 7th in the 3s?
Road race: Katie Lambden was in a 2woman break all day and took 2nd on the stage and GC. Andy Guptill was in the break all day and took 9th, 14th GC.
The point here is that you shouldn’t ever go ahead of your field’s Moto. That’s the rule. The guys who broke this rule cheated. It was proper for them to be dq’d.
As for whether they mixed it up in the A’s? At least one of them tried to mix into the A break, but we didn’t let him.
in the last lap of C race gets slowed by moto neutralizing the field as A race comes by. One guy (Mike?) stays back with the pack, while other two blow past the moto and finish ahead (claiming not to have mixed it up with the A field). They were dq’d for the finish line points for going ahead of their field’s pace moto. I was about 2/3 back in the field and saw the A moto guide us to the right and felt the field slow way down in the right lane by our moto, but couldn’t see what happened at the front. Anyone up front have a better description? Was the break screwed by the moto or were they so close to the front of the field that it didn’t matter and they were clearly out of line in going when we were all obviously slowed down?

At Sutton, Robert Lattanzi was second in the 30+ crit, Tony Settel was 3rd in the 40+ TT, and Brian Rafferty won the 50+ GC with some other podium appearances. I think Doug O’Neil got some 50+ podium time too.
