Hangover 5/21/2007

Section head text.

Amuary Perez from Mengoni takes the 123, Tony Slokar gets the 4s, and Doug O’Neil wins the masters/women’s handicap race with Kaite Lambden holding on for 3rd from the women’s field at the King’s County Circuit Race. Chris Samuels wins the 5s race.

No news from Great Neck. Can anyone let us know what happened? Did you win?

There was also a Mountain Bike race – in Manhattan. Let that sink in. Hungry takes 2nd in sport 40-49, and I’m pretty sure Andrew Crooks won the singlespeed class. Andrew’s beats almost anyone with one gear and no suspension.

Greg Lemond is broke? You mean I can’t ask him to co-sign for my new Subaru Brat?

I admit I cheated and f’ed up for a long time. But why take it out on me now when all the Useless big shots around here are defending doping and dopers.
Apologies to all. I now realize what’s really important as my wife and I prepare to have a family.

Joe

amen brother!

and sisters!

"The limiting factor ….second, a steep learning curve for women’s races. Just imagine if you had to go up against a field full of Cat 1,2,3 racers in your first race. You would get your ass kicked pretty quickly in most of those cases, and nothing like a getting dropped in the first 10 minutes of your first race to kill your enthusism."

I’m a guy and my first race was like that due to a small turnout. Ouch.

Women's Racing

closing the pre-reg earlier only shortens the time that it is available, it does very little to incentivise people to register early unless there is a likelihood that the field will completely sell out.

unfortunatly women’s races do not attract enough to make this very likely. Just like charging women less for the same race as men, it is only an incentive if that is the limiting factor. The limiting factor with women’s races are twofold, no deep pipeline of new talent like jrs in the women’s ranks, and second, a steep learning curve for women’s races. Just imagine if you had to go up against a field full of Cat 1,2,3 racers in your first race. You would get your ass kicked pretty quickly in most of those cases, and nothing like a getting dropped in the first 10 minutes of your first race to kill your enthusism.

It would be good if all races are long enough to qualify for upgrades except if prevented by the amount of time allocated for the venue.
I don’t think any of the Great Neck races qualified. Might not be AVD’s fault.
Prize money for women is a different and separate issue.
Minimum field sizes can be set to trigger different prize money. Min field sizes can also be used to cut laps.
Additional costs to promoter to add 20 minutes to a race are minimal.

anent women registering later

If promoters want certainty of the number of riders registered earlier, they should set the pre-reg deadline earlier. Or set a lower field limit so there is a chance the race will fill.

If a race is not going to fill, it’s normal for very few riders to pre-reg more than a few days before the deadline. So if having 5 women signed up two weeks before the race causes stress, make the deadline 3 weeks ahead.

catch 24

Promoters don’t put on races for free. Sure they love the sport, but time is money. Small turnout in races take up time and pruduce no money. The only solution is to get more women to races, or find promoters that want to help women racing out of the pure goodness of thier heart.

catch 23?

in past years the women’s race was longer than 10 miles and the field was decent.
the issue of women registering later is a very real one, of course….

Greg Lemond broke..

That would be sad. He pioneered the million dollar salary for Tour winners. Before him they were only making around $200k annually. He also got into the bike making business early in his career.

because...

mengoni is a 123 team, mostly U35, and WW is a masters-focused team. Damn good one at that.

I thought

Great Neck was a great neighborhood for a crit…but it needed to have a little longer stretches and less pot hole puddles in the apexes of the funky multicambered highspeed corners…maybe they can add a block on at the bottom. The field in the p,1,2 went from 65 to 25 in about 2 laps…NO SHIT
oh yeah, and they need to keep a tighter leash on the residents wandering and driving out on to the course.
FIX that and it’ll will be on my real faves list….it’s already close.

Really poor taste

Scot Willingham is one of the most decent guys out there.
Don’t like the way he rides? Then tell him directly.

The strange thing is the post seems to come from a guy in the master’s race. You’ve been on this planet for 35 years, and still feel the need to call someone names anonomously? This board would probably get way more meaningful discussion if it was log-in only.

Catch 22

women’s race is short because women don’t show.
women don’t show because womens’ race is short.

Ugly

Hey Tony, I don’t think you’ve gotten enough props today, so congrats on the WIN!!! Someone recently asked if bars really stay open until 4AM. The answer is YES, and it’s part of Tony’s pre-race prep. The key is to ride your bike (or tandem) to the bar so you can keep your legs loose (for dancing).

Go Slokar! Respect the power of the dbag mustache!

kwk

Great Neck was a well run race. if you are thinking of doing a crit it is great for a first timer. much more exciting than the parks

cycling.tv

The new service is way better than the old one. Still a little finicky, but well worth the $25 I spent for the Giro. Would be nice if you could download even higher res.

yeah

the t-shirts are still selling!

as for what i think, i’m waiting till the arbitration hearing is over to make any sort of judgement on the matter. i will say this- whether he’s guilty or innocent, it’s glaringly obvious that the anti-doping system needs a mojor overhaul

haha. some of these guys crack me up. bitching about results being posted in the RACE RESULTS section of the website.

what’s next? are you going to bitch and moan about people posting photographs in the pics section?

cjammet

is the new MTB trail in manhattan cyclocross bike-able? i was thinking it’ll be a good place to mess around before the season starts in the fall

HighBridge race was tough prior comment just about covers it. I raced the expert field and dug deep to finish.
Eight times up that bad boy worked over the quads quite nicely. Racers were taking some good dirt samples. Course was a little short but the technical covered the addiction. Roadies the climb out of the start is perfect for repeats.

Sponsors and Results

I work for a company that sponsors a major Prolevel team. The fact is most of the time the sponsors are a result of a highlevel employee being a huge cycling fan and cyclist. There are better ways to advertise one’s services and these sponsorships are a result of someone in the company loving the sport. Across the board, most sponsors, Bissel, Navigators Insurance, Slipstream, RockRacing (Rock N Republich clothing) have a big time cyclist pushing for the spsonsorship. Unless you are winning big USA races or Euro races you are not doing much for your sponsor in terms of exposure to the general population.

i was so impressed by the way adler rode i went out and bought an ottoman and some scented candles. i had to take the money out of my merrill lynch mutual fund but those guys had no results this weekend so i wanted to punish my broker.

Eugene

The Great Neck crit had a fair turnout. But I’m surprised that it wasn’t packed. It was a nice downtown crit around a park (where racers’ families could picnic during the event). It was 3 blocks away from the LIRR, easily accessible by car, and some from Queens and Bklyn rode there. The event was well-run and had food/drinks for the racers (nice!). And it was a sunny, beautiful day. Next year, you should all come out.

Self Promotion - Results etc.

Nothing wrong with a little patting on the back but that is what the results page section of this blog is for no? As for what sponsors pay for – come on… Lets take Merrill Lynch or Adler (not on either team). Do you think those sponsors get any added exposure by one of there team racers posting that they got 3rd in a feild of 25 at a race that no one goes to – Great Neck. Its great for the racers to do well and much deserved as the results as we know come with hard work and dedication. But it is still self promotion and it does no one harm but also does not do the sponsors jack shit.

Highbridge race

A very tough course that could be broken down into three parts. Started with drag strip into a deceptively steep power climb on pavement, followed by some very technical/off camber/slick and at times brutal single track strewn with mud and sharp rocks, and the final third was a super fun twisty windy downhill into the start finish line.

A lot of flesh and blood was left on a course that took many by surprise. Big turnout, including many from out of town.

The middle third section needs some work for next time. Just too tight and technical for a course this short. Needed more flow.

Big shout out to the guys that made this surreal race happen.

Huh?

"Isn’t that what the sponsors pay for, promotion/recognition? Results deserve attention."

Recognition of what and by whom? at best sponsors get recognition for their support of the sport by a very small group of people. Results?

self-promoting

Self promoting particulary after good results…much better than sour-mouthed, anon posting dickheads. I hope you ride in anon jersey with no promoting sponsors on…who cares if it’s bear or some local race – results are results and you gotta be there to earn your points. Occaisional self promotion does no harm. Good job to all winners.

Posting = Self promotion

I believe the very nature of posting a result of your team or any team is in essense self promotion of your team and your team’s accomplishments. You dont see every team posting there results after every race.

battenkill?

Doug won that one too, and WW got 3 out of top ten in 120 man field, Too bad Axis wasn’t there.

Not a Razorfish, Mengoni or Boer

Isn’t that what the sponsors pay for, promotion/recognition? Results deserve attention.

Whats with all the pathetic self promotion today? Its not like these teams just dominated Bear or Battenkill. This weekend was pure filler races only.

Mtn Bike Race

So how was the course – Highbridge? Looks like some spills in the pictures. Technical or just a shitty course?

Avenue A/Razofish

Kings County(Cat4) – 3rd place, Nat Eng
Great Neck Crit(Cat4/5) – 2nd place, Andrew Babaian
Carlisle TT(20km) – 1st place, Rick Hall

Rick

There was only one DQ in the Union Grove 3/4, the other riders were DNF, DNS, or dropped I think.

Axis rode as smart as WW at KCC

Axis 2 riders entered both placed 2&6th
Wonder Wheels 5 riders entered 4 placed 1,5,7 & 8th

Eugene

BTW, Scot is spelled with one "t". If you’re going to slam him, you might as well be correct.

Coach J

If you haven’t seen it already, please do take a look at the mountain bike race photos from High Bridge Park. I encourage all my athletes to be multi-dimensional, and not to over-specialize. In diet, in competitive disciplines, and in training modes.

We find mountain biking an excellent complement to our road racing preparation and competition. In fact, there is so much training crossover that we adapt our road workouts as follows:

Do the same workout as on the road but for 90% of the time at 105% of the intensity. Then sit down, sit back and roll yourself a nice, fat

Wonder Wheels rode a smart race; Scott Willmingham did not.

Kings County ;First lap Doug O (Wonder Wheels) attacks with Jeff Bickford in tow. The two catch all the women that were 3 min. up, dropping all but one. Wonder Wheels had about 10 in a field of 20. They took advantage of Doug’s strength to cover moves, Schmalz style. A good chase group formed half way through with Krusty G. (Jeff’s team mate), Tony Maisto (Wonder Wheels), Andrew Riss (JPR Racing), Mr. JPR himself, old school stud Nigel, from the DC area, a couple of others, and our local nutjob Scott Willmingham. Krusty and Maisto sat on as they had teammates up the road while the others kept up the pressure. Scott was very busy attacking AND gapping riders off the back of the chase group to the point of getting himself dropped from the break. (rest of post deleted)

26 us champ

CAt 3? – sandbaggery
..I’m not sure, but I don’t think she ever threw her cat in the ring ..even as a yunkster

Ben H

Great win Tony – way to defend the title!!!! I heard that the SoAfrica team was awesome throughout.

Coach L

LeMond bounced his last three checks to me for coaching services. He also still owes me $40 from the seance that I arranged between him and Pantani.

Great Neck Masters

3 man break with Xavier Melendez, Geoff Bickford, and some NJ rider lapped the field. Pack included Ken H., Pollo, Wilson, Burrows. NJ rider won, Geoff second and Xavier third.

that lady

"Some lady (Betty?) in a Somerset kit overwhelmed the women’s field. She rode away from the field after a preem, lapped them with 5 to go, and rode away again to finish alone by a straightaway. "

and

"that lady is a 26 time us champion"

I can’t understand why she is still a cat 3. Not that it would have mattered at Great Neck, but in general that’s sandbagging.

HG

Nice job there Slokar, that was a long sprint, I was sure that he would fade, but he kept it strong and won.

Great win Tony

You had so much left to do in the end and pulled it off. That was great to watch from far behind.

Great Neck wiki

Gavin Robertson wins the 3/4 race by a few bike lengths in a sprint.

Didn’t see the other races.
