Hopeful Friday 5/18/2007

Section head text.

This weekend will have races at Floyd Bennett Field (The King’s County Circuit Race) on Saturday and at Great Neck on Sunday. Plus, there’s a mountain bike race in Manhattan! Oh, there was also a little incident with Greg Lemond in a courtroom somewhere, does anybody know anything about that?

If there’s one thing I know it’s that someone has got to get Greg Lemond a reality show. And what kind of idiot makes a threatening phone call from their OWN PHONE! It’s like “Law and Order” isn’t even on TV!

I’m now patting myself on the back for not using the “w” word once in that paragraph.

We have an entry to give away for the King’s County Circuit Race, so whoever leaves the best reply message for Will Geoghegan wins – please try not to be incredibly offensive.

the only reason Lemond is in cali doing this is because he is broke, he really screwed up his finances.

Lemond’s career was cut short by illness caused by lead from shooting accident. He couldn’t ride anymore.

Why does everyone say he’s bitter? Maybe that’s just the spin of the Lance PR machine. Pretty effective.
How could anyone say anything against Lance without being bitter and jealous and envious and vindictive.

have to wonder

But still will grumble. We now know that at least two guys on the UPMC crew were juicing. There were probably guys on that team who were clean – maybe the ones who go out of the team quick. But one has to wonder about others. So Pappe and Targauilla not only hurt their competitors, they hurt their teammates too.

Kevin please

don’t lump Lemond with Papp.

Maybe he’s just as pissed off as you about dopers ruining the sport. Maybe you think he shouldn’t care and he should mind his own business?
Probably he’s right in his charges against Landis and Armstrong.

about Papp

That guy really likes to be associated with top riders. I can just see him writing on his blog "When I was given a two year suspension from racing in the same way as Olympic Champion Tyler Hamilton and TOur of Spain winner Alex Zuelle…"

I give people in general the benefit of the doubt. But I’m sure some local guys dope to get an advantage. People can and will sometimes do stupid things without looking at the bigger picture. I remember guys in college that were weight training nuts taking steroids just so they looked better on spring break! I thought they were kidding me but they showed me he stuff.

Dopers suck

its that simple. every result, every placing they take robs a legtimate rider from a result, and puts the entire event/sport into question. legtimate, not legitimate? let alone millions of dollars, careers ruined or dimmed by dopers. Riders at grand tours missing cutoff times because dopers lit up courses forcing them outside the time limits.
dopers suck. there should be no tolerance for it none. but there should be some way of validly proving the existence of dope, something which is without approach.

Wow, What a day I missed on NYVC

Just logged in, man, what a good thread. Some humor, something education, sexual molestation. What more could one want! My roommate wanst to watch the Yankees/Met, i say wireless internet and NYVC takes the cake. I wish there were more meaningless pot shots at people, it really livens things up.
Lemond is weak, a rat. Yeah, it wasnt nice to harrass the guy and do so foolishly from your own cell phone, but i hate lemond.

Eugene

"How do you and other riders feel now that suspicions have been confirmed?"

Everyone feels differently. I had a team mate who knew more than I did, and was always very angry about their "assistance". I learned the complete truth (aside from rumors, etc) about 2 years ago and it upset me deeply. I guess before that I hadn’t thought about it too much, then suddenly I was slapped with the reality. I had trouble dealing with it.

There’s nothing wrong with taking stuff seriously. The problem is with taking yourself seriously.

To Eugene

You raced often against Papp, Tardagulla and Heredia. How do you and other riders feel now that suspicions have been confirmed?
Suh seemed to know that Papp was bringing in drugs from SA. How would he know this? Did Eustice learn this from Pulla?

Papp said he knew of a lot of dopers. With him and his 2 friends gone, are there still a lot of local guys doping? I could be wrong but it I think Papp and Pulla were sharing a common supply. Papp and Alvaro were teammates. Pulla and Alvaro co-workers.

schmalz

I see nothing wrong with a rolling resistence discussion. Let me just mention my butt to keep things consistent, though.

blah,blah,blah

Go talk somewhere else….always complaining about this or that or someone else….why don’t you go clean your cassette and talk to your bike to go faster next time…Floyd, upgrade points…powertap…blah, blah, blah.

To Eugene

Landis’ claim, first put forward by John Eustice on ESPN that testosternoe is of no use in a stage race is the red herring.

They are trying to say that the positive test result was not possible because no one would be taking testosterone.

Eugene

"[Joe Papp’s] other doping violations Suh tried to allude to were red herrings"? or
"Landis’ claim that testosterone is of no use is the red-herring"?

Anonymous

Is it the same person who is writing these novellas? Perhaps you should get more acquainted with your audience and reduce your blabber to bite-sized portions.

To Eugene

It really doesn’t matter if Papp knows what drug effected what. He’s testifying correctly that testosterone is believed to help in stage races, is widely used and usually is not detected.
There was also an article in cyclingnews about use of testosterone before last year’s tour.
Landis’ claim that testosterone is of no use is the red-herring.

upgrade points?

there are things more prestigious out there to strive for, WK, than upgrade points. a little thing called achieving the maximum. its a TT’er kind of thing and we should leaev it at that.
Girlfriend? i wish. been married for 14 years, 3 kids, and CEO a fairly major company. UPgrade points? the day my objective in cycling becomes striving for upgrade points is the day i give up the sport.
speed rules. the pursuit of it can be super fun. maybe not your cup of tea, and thats cool, but rather than bag on it, maybe look a little more into it, and you too could become a seeker of speed. oh, and fyi, those with speed dont get there by wheels, tires, bikes principally if at all. they get there through hard training and long difficult miles. sometimes the speed stuff matters.
the difference between 7th and i think 24th at bear 3s was a total of 8 feet, 1.2 seconds in a 3:10minuet race. if you dont think the pursuit of speed matters, just ask the guy who finished 24th same time, instead of 7th. he would probably have loved just that 2/10ths of a mile faster finish.

and just because it ticked me a bit, the comment about amateur cat3 racing….dont take this the wrong way, but if you’re gonna pursue stuff, you darn well ought to give it 150% whether youre a beginner cat 5, a domestique pro/cat1 or the Yellow jersey leader of the TDF. the day you set limitations or conditions on your effort, well, is the day you head downhill. the mentality of "only an amateur cat5" will surely keep you for the 4s, the 3s and where ever each person wants to go.
you read that up here every so often "dude, tis only cat4 racing" its only cat 3 racing. YOu were at the back of the field in the Pro12. that tone is just about offensive as anything to the spirit of being a sportman.

i’ve ridden with some of the best. you want to see talent and umph….come out and ride perkins with Roger Aspholm who might do it in his big ring since today was his "force/tension" workout. He’d be the first person coming back down (first person because he’s the first one to the top) to ride back up with the last guy giving it their very best.

soemtimes people think there is somethign wrong with taking stuff seriously. i don’t. this sport is so great it demands our best.

maybe we just have differing opinions and thats cool. as a 38 year old father of 3 thats done some things in my time, i figured i’d share mine with you.

Eugene

"The other doping violations Suh tried to allude to were red herrings."

I disagree. Papp claims to well know the benefits of testosterone. But if he was also using other drugs simultaneously, how could he possibly know which drug was effective?

Also, Papp claimed to know all about the effects of testosterone, but not much about the other drugs he was taking. It was an indication that he was coached to say those things.

These facts aren’t red herrings– they lead directly to contradictions in his testimony.

RE: Rolling resistance:

Dude, be real here, ur racing amtature level cat 3 races,
#s, Watts, mirco **##&&^#%? remember that there’s no upgrade points for TT’s. u prob should get a girlfriend.

rolling resistance

i have way of advising you of my own effective, actual rolling resistances. the wattages, i agree, do not speak to rolling resistances at all. no way to compare rolling resistances by analyzing 378 watt for 22 mintues at High Point vs 333 for 21:53 @ somerset. i’m not sure there is any legitimate way for a commoner to test rolling resistances other than a rolldown test assuming you can replicate everything. hence, i go off the several document tests doen by the science brainiacs out there in a lab environment, on a drum, identical setups. they have proven that there is significant differences between rolling resistances in the various tires. i think everyone who studies thereports will say the same thing. dugast, veloflex record, veloflex carbon, vittoria evo cx soem of the best.

on the other hand, while very difficult to perceive, i think we all nknow our equipment pretty well, and i willsay that as noted before, i simply felt the bike was slippery fast at somerset. the lower watts had mroe tod o with the 2 minutes total of coasting , cruising, edging thru turns without scrubbing speed yet low watt pedalling more so than having a bad day.

we dissected that somerset course pretty well. my goal was like 354, 355 watts for the 22 minutes, which i hit but when you factor in the 10 to 15 seconds coasting barreling into turns at 30mph, little micro recoveries, i think in retropect, i should have gone harder in between, like targeting 380 watts, then with the no-pedalling sections, might have ended up around 350. corroborating that, i felt i had a lot left thereafter. and so to take a 4th overall, win the m35, again, i’d say the bike was "fast" or i drove it fast, but i dont think my technical talents are that good. the bike was fast.

another sign of fast wheels, related to the vittoria, i took the field sprint in the cat3 bear, 7th there. attacked before that last little hump, got the sled up to speed early and then just drilled it to the line. a sprint i have nothing that resembles such a thing, but somehow i was able to keep everyone back just enough. maybe the wheels? i have no idea. but again, the bike carried fast. i think it was 38 second at like 695 watts, the first 10 at 900ish , which for me, hate saying it approaches maximal power (maybe 1050 one time i once saw…i thinks)…. tires? maybe. maybe not. but i’ll go on the data.

i initially defended the tufo’s: coggan says "steve, its not 5 seconds your losing in that 40k tt. its way more"

ripped those tufos off and we dont look back

underground system of doping info

I think so. And dodgy doctors – at least according to that Festina soigneur who got caught.

Your supplier tells you what to try — you start with small amounts, speculate based on body weight, etc. With steroids at least you won’t drop dead as with EPO. The only big danger of too much is you get caught. But except at the top level of the sport there is not much testing.

Well there are other dangers too, but those show up years later. Or in the form of whacked out behaviour.

I used to work out a gym where there was steroid trafficking in the locker room. And it seemed to involve long conversations which is presume were about when/how much to use.

Papp

Got a two-year ban and no reduced sanction, effective the day he accepted a provisional suspension in 2006. He testified to that under oath yesterday in the hearing.

The other doping violations Suh tried to allude to were red herrings. There aren’t any. Papp cheated (duh!), got popped, but apparently didn’t get paid $ or a reduced ban for his testimony.

Nice AndroGel packet.

Papp did the TDF

Cause I’m sure the testing a a lower level UCI race is much less sophisticated than the testing at the TDF. And those TDF guys have nothing to gain at all.
Seems to me the UCI testing is the same across the board. If you can cheat the test at a low level and it’s the same as the TDF, what’s stopping you?

Not everyone knows what they are doing.

http://outside.away.com/outside/news/200406/cycling_epo_1.html

Writing in a London newspaper, Phil Liggett, the veteran cycling broadcaster, pointed out that as many as 100 international racers have died prematurely during the past decade, most from heart attacks. The likely cause, Liggett argued, was the ongoing abuse of EPO, a synthetic and stealthy version of a hormone that spurs red-blood-cell production and thus boosts endurance.

A question on the nature of doping these days. With the very notable exceptions of Puerto and even BALCO, it seems like a lot of athletes are

pissed at Papp

I’m mad at the guy, but not sure he’s full of it. What he says may be true. Whether it’s relevant to the quality of testing of Landis is another story.

Here is the kicker on Papp though, via Burt Hoovis:

"- Suh got Papp to admit that, during his trips to races in South America, he brought back products (EPO, testosterone, etc) for him and his teammates to use (Hoovis

Anonymous

evidently, in addition to cheating in order to win local races, Papp is full of shit. I’ve read that he’s gotten a lighter sentence in exchange for his cooperation in these matters.

Unless your powermeter is built into the road....

your numbers comparing different setups in the TTs you did tell us nothing about your rolling resistance. In the tests the power meter is attached to the drum, not the wheel.

coggan is a math, science mega-braniac of the nth degree. and he points those brains toward cycling. he’s a bit sour on things since selling out his stuff to trainingpeaks and hunter allan, but he knows his sh&t a to z. he says rolling resistance matters, i bet you big it matters.

Papp

Supposedly the following text came out of AP last night but has been pulled:

"A midlevel pro cyclist testified he was a drug cheat at the Floyd
Landis arbitration hearing Friday, describing in detail how synthetic
testosterone helped him recover in multi-day stage races like the Tour
de France.
Joe Papp, who received a two-year doping suspension that hadn’t been
made public until this testimony, was brought to the witness stand by
the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.
USADA used his testimony to refute earlier claims made by Landis’
attorneys that testosterone couldn’t help Landis win the 2006 Tour and
that he’d be crazy to use it if he knew he might be tested.
"It’s such a false statement that it makes me angry," Papp said. "Why
am I here? I’m not getting anything out of being here. I have
everything to lose from being here."
Reaching into his jacket pocket to show a packet of the testosterone
gel he used, Papp refuted both Landis theories – saying it was easy to
stay below the threshold of a positive test with the gel and claiming
the gel helped him greatly in recovering between stages.
"You can compete in UCI-sanctioned stage races like a 2,000-kilometer-
long race with drug testing every day, and you can race and win and be
on drugs and not test positive," Papp said in interviews after his
testimony.
He said it was easy to get away with having allowed amounts of
testosterone in his system if he timed it right. After leaving doping
control, he could simply go to a private place and discreetly rub the
gel into his chest.
Landis sat at the defense table, pretty much expressionless as he
watched Papp testify."

Charlie Issendorf and Alan Atwood do a fantastic job promoting races for Kissena. We are ALL better because of the work they do.

The comment below about a nominal fee is completely wrong.

Feel free to directly ask them how these events are structured.

DC Racing

Fred –

We’ll soon be announcing an event to take place later this season, and we’re working on something bigger, hopefully for next season.

tire resistance

it started when i was working up the thread on the making of the BMC, which fyi, was a total flop. if you want to read mor eon that disaster, check out.
http://www.westwoodvelo.com/forumdisplay.php?f=66

a few guys, super knowledgeable including andy coggan, on slowtwitch started dialoguing about tire rolling resistance figures. guys were bashing my use of Tufos which i historically had loved for the tape, installation, sealant(less flatting), etc. they pointed me to a few different sites where guys did the studies on rolling resistance figures of all tires and tubulars.
if you search biketechreview.com or slowtwitch you’ll find them, plus search the westwoodvelo.com Need for Speed thread.

here the Cheat sheet – there is a huge huge difference between the best and worst. tremendous. well worth reviewing before you buy. the most supple tires did the best. veloflex, for the money, was phenomenal for time trialing. i say "for time trialing" because there is always the issue of flatting. u flat you cant place. for time trialing, veloflex record and carbons had great numers, the carbon a bit worse than the record, heavier, but more flat resistance. the dugast the best of all. very expensive. not a lto of puncture resistance but fast.
just down a tubular tir eor two were th vittoria evo cx’s which also had agreat puncture resistance. i dont remember the protocol, but something like, put tire on drum, get it to 20mph, measure watts required. less watts wins. obviously things like weight, aerodynamics and puncture resistance are not factored in.
bu tthe differences were huge.

the next most important thing i learned was that MORE air pressure usually, unless it was a perfectly flat track, was worse. thats right worse. turn me on my head because i come from the ole’ school of jacking up pressure all the way. wrong. high high pressure causes the bike/tires to micro-skip and bounce down the road. a lower pressure allows the wtire to roll with the pavement and keep energy/inertia moving forward.

these guys on slowtwitch are smart. i’m dumb. so i followed some ideas and advise. went with dugaast 22’s speed silks from worldclasscycles for the TT bike, and vittoria evo cx’s for the road.
latex tubulars far better than butyl.

Tufo tape vs. glue costs you 2,3 watts. the tape being ‘softer’ thus energy loss. shilac is the best, but can ruin wheels/tires. most tires did very best in the studies around 125 to 130 lbs.

in sum, the hcanges i made were changing tires, gluing instead of tufo tape, and lower pressure.

i found the link on wv site. scroll down and yo’ll see the link to the pDF study. i think they updated it.

ALSO, VERY VERY IMPORTANT; get this….there are many, repeat :many clinchers that have rolling resistance figures FAR superior to tubulars. really makes the case (and those smart guys concur) that clinchers could be a great solution for fast wheels… now, there are issues like weight, aerodynamics, stiffness, etc. but apples to apples, there are a dozen or more clinchers that performed better than like all but 2 tubulars (veloflex/vittoria). makes the case for a carbon clincher like the reynolds for sure. i gave it some thought, but for a lot of races, the vittoria evo comes close.

does it matter? i have no idea. but how in the world, when you’re doing a TT, seeking speed, can you put on a tire that performs like 15watts worse than another?
i can say that i did pretty well at somerset, winning the m35, 4th overall, and it was not a great day powerwise, doing 333 for the 22 minutes, whereas i did 378 for 22 minutes at high point. granted high point is a steady climb so easier to load up the load so to speak, and yes, somerset required techincal ability to carry speed through the 10 or so turns it had…but still those wheels really felt fast.. and maybe thats half the battle.

i dont think i gave anything up, and maybe picked up some extra speed. if smart guys like coggan say its so, who am i to refute?

Powertap

I’d like to know how many races were lost because someone was using a powertap wheel instead of a lighter, more aero wheel. There are a lot of guys who do great in races that are racing on pretty normal wheels like Ksyriums. Just a reminder again, it’s not about the bike.

Fred Lee

I’m talking about the USCF rules.

http://www.usacycling.org/forms/clubapp.pdf
"3. Sponsored USAC clubs must hold at least one
permitted USAC event per year."

http://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=666
"only riders who belong to clubs can be sponsored; all others are considered unattached riders and are supposed to compete in clothing that doesn’t bear any sponsorship identification."

CRCA sub-teams don’t need to promote races on their own since their membership helps promote and run the many races that the club does. Champion is non-CRCA and they promote roller racing, Westwood and BVF promote TTs.

My question was what does DC racing do? Again, no hate here, I just want to see as many races and events as possible.

Sad state we are in

Many of Lance’s old Postal squad (at least 4) have either been caught or admitted to doping. Two of them spend millions defending themselves and swear by it that they are innocent. Hamilton is now suspended again but he is sticking to his story and Landis has a business assiociate that calls lemond and pretend to be his uncle. How weird is this? What are these guys up to and what is behind all of it.

The South African Cricket captain took bribes to fix matches in the late 90’s and was suspended from the game for life. He was not even allowed to coach at elementary school level. Maybe that’s the way to go.

Potty.

In a nutshell:

In August of 2006, Floyd Landis calls Greg Lemond to discuss comments Greg made about his situation that Floyd felt were slanderous.

Greg advises Floyd to come clean and admit doping because "keeping a secret will ruin your life", and then tells Floyd a secret of his own. Floyd responds by saying "what good would it do?" and that if he did it "it would destroy a lot of my friends and hurt a lot of people."

Greg’s takeaway: "Floyd admitted to doping."
Floyd’s takeaway: "What a story, you know who should know about this? Will Geoghegan."

Fast forward to the present day, Will Geoghegan gets buzzed on a beer or two and drunk dials Lemond as his "Uncle Ron." Lemond testifies to this in court. Will Geoghegan gets canned.

cs600 with power. i have nothing to compare it against, but in my mind it’s a good unit. i seem to be getting very consistent data. both the power readings are good and the HR transmitter is solid (almost no interference or lapse of data).

it gives you a ton of information – power, HR, cadence, left\right imbalance, time\temp, incline\decline, etc. you can program exercises into it (intervals for example) using the software, customize the display, all sorts of things.

the software is decent, but so far there is no support for a mac. you also need an infrared transmitter on your computer. i bought an aftermarket one for $11 which did the trick.

installation is easy enough. just dedicate a couple of hours to get it right and it’ll pay off.

Kissena as a club doesn’t do shit. Charlie puts on a lot of races in return for a nominal fee. My guess is that a Prospect race can net the promoter between $2-6,000.
FBF maybe a $500-2,000.

2. Brian G (of DC?) thinks joking about a smuck who pretends to be a former pro cyclist uncle who is a child molester is not funny?

3. Schmalz has now considered to have crossed a line… and is refusing to talk about tubluars.

4. NYVC is against tofu eating hippies in spandex

Cycling

After this one, pro cycling in the US can kiss it’s ass goodbye (pardon the imagery). What sponsor would ever touch this sport now? Unless we want to have a BALCO Pro Cycling Team Presented by NAMBLA.

bad humor vs serious discussion

are two different things getting mixed here very badly. Not asking for fuzzy blanket here but voicing criticism on the very low standard humor by some posts below. Are you saying that we live in a world of lowest denominator and should accept it? That is like saying ‘the world is ugly and i’ll just live in it’ I know we’re all a bit depressed right now but that’s not helping…I thought cyclists were dreamers and optimists at heart.

Cycling and the Landis

case is about to get a whole new fan base as the entire jerry springer viewer base are being converted. I cannot even begin to imagine how much cycling will suffer as a result of these resent events. Good luck to Discovery in their bids to obtain a new sponsor.

Hey Will,

Thanks Bud. Now no know even wants to look at me, let alone listen to my bs. I’m ruined, totally done.
You’ve driven me back to God.

Floyd

I agree

this discussion is way off.
let’s talk about what really matters.

Who here saw Stomp the Yard?
Loved it, right?

Mr 60

Where’s Cjammet when you need him?
I’d like to hear his take on the Landis situation.
He’ll say WADA faked the phone call, probs.

I’d like to buy one of his free Floyd T-shirts.
They are way funny now.

Landis

is supposed to be at Bookends (Ridgewood, NJ book store) later this month promoting/signing a book. wonder how this affects that

Anonymous

wait, eugene, i totally lost you, but i think you just gave us a good explanation for why jft likes puppies so much (and he does dig him some puppies.)

tubulars

i’ve use da lot of different tubular wheels. in particular in last 3 years, i’ve ridden/raced Zipp 303s, 404s, easton Temp II , reynolds DV46 DV46 "UL"s, Zipp 808s, a zipp disc, and rolf tdf38s and 58s. most of the time i get stuff at cost from a buddy at our shop, and they sell it later at about my cost.
after going thru it all, i’ve settled on the Rolf TDF38s (303) and 58s. They are as light as the ZIpps303/404s, they are far stiffer with paired "Rolf" spoke design; they are cool looking hubs and with the spokes, have a real performance look/feel. THe stiffness is immediately apparent. i train on a ROlf Prima vigor which is insanely stiff. i’ve smashed the heck out of them and never had a true issue.
one downside is that they bury the nippes in the rim, so with tubulars, fi they did come loose, and you had to true, off comes the tire. i’ve never had to true ever.
with due respect to zipp, i find their 303,404s a bit too unstiffy, maybe even flexy. and i find the build quality pretty poor in general. stuff comes loose, and the hubs are kind of boring. and their stuff is as expensive if not more expensive than the Rolf. rolf tdf58 would be my one arrow in the quiver if i had to pick one.
other than the tdf58 which iuse for just about all road events, rarely using the 303 other than palmer (whichi think was maybe a 50/50 call, and HP Hill Climb), the only ohter set i use is a 999 set. disc rear, 808 front. the808 front is pretty stiff because 1/2 the wheel is carbon rim, very little spokes, and the disc rear is the nicest in the business. i dont mind dimples on a disc as i clean the disc before every race. those dimples collect dirt. i looked at a buddies 404 rim before Bear and there were clumps of dirt, etc. on them. probably no issue for road races but if used for TT’s they would just increase drag. those dimpled rims have to be cleaned.

Lately, i’ve been focusing on tire rolling resistance, lower pressures which significantly increase rolling figures. i ripped off all my tufos and put on dugast 22speed silks on the tt bike, and vitt evo cx’s on the road bike wheels. difference of like 15 watts between those tires.

anyway, there’s some thoughts on the tubular issue.

heard the new mavic ultimate is going to be THE wheel, single arrow quiver. 1160 grams, very aero. mavic strength, crash replacement.

hope everyone had a good weekend at bear. cross fingers for minimal rain this weekend.

Floyd Bennett field will

not be the same when it rains. The flying objects down the astroid belt will be missed as they add greatly to this delightful course or would they still fly around even in wet conditions?. It is going to be great racing and I am looking forward.

Going downhill fast

That there’s now a constant discussion here about what should be funny or allowed in posts just shows how the site has changed for the worse over time. More bike racing and less bullshit, please?

More accurately, if there was a forum up to bash OJ during the trial, do you think the families would’ve used it?

Eugene

Childish humor?! What’s childish is to create a shelter where everyone gets along, there are fuzzy stuffed toys everywhere, and no harm exists anywhere. This is the environment that exists for many children in America, and now you want to extend it to your adult environment too. It’s phony and deceptive– and when kids are exposed to the real world, it’s so shocking that they cling to security blankets like feel-good movies, stuffed animals, or actual security blankets!

This is real. Let’s not hide it.

Neuvation Wheels

they rock…price to quality ratio is awesome.
stand up to incredible abuse, never go out of true,
not heavy, not slow, and you don’t have to take the tire
off to adjust them (not that you ever will) and no special
tools needed. In fact they are sold as "forte titan" for like
$200/pair. A steal.

Families of victims

I’m sick of this culture of victimhood
If we choose to say nothing in order not to hurt family member’s feelings, nothing will be said
we need open debate
not a pious silence

to: to "idea

It has nothing to do with fragile, but more with childish humor, I think it all became a fad when OJ’s trial was made into a spectator event. If you were the family of those murdered (or abused in this case), do you think you’d enjoy this type of discussion? It has more to do with your sensitivity TO others, than with fragility OF others.

Eugene

to "idea for this discussion",
I think the gist of it is, "As if his actions weren’t bad enough, he’s also so stupid that…"

If we need

a ‘sexual abuse is bad’ disclaimer we let the terrorists win.
Oh, what’s that?
They did?
Forget it.

Anonymous

Having encountered sexual abuse in my family (a sibling, not me) i feel i have some ground to say that sexual abuse is not funny. that said, i think this string is f’ing hillarious…Brian G can suck it…get a f’ing sense of humour!

to "idea for this discussion"

Are you so fragile that you need to be told "We think sexual abuse is abominable" as a disclaimer?

schmalz

"Brian G. & DvB are morons." As a moron I take offense to that. I have proven over and over that I am, indeed a moron. These guys get one lucky shot and get moron status? Not fair!

Play nice.

whatever...

Brian G. & DvB are morons. learn how to read and decipher the english language idiots. lay off the tofu – oa

idea for this discussion

the idea to win a race entry for a reply call, might help people vent but it’s introduced as "And what kind of idiot makes a threatening phone call from their OWN PHONE!" This makes it sound like "the only thing he did wrong is use his own phone" I’m sorry but that is what that statement sounds like and it makes light of what he actually did,

The responses here are obviously not Greg’s fans but they try to put humor into their "reply calls" which is SAD because it makes light of those abused.

The problem is not with a serious discussion on how wrong it was, but with trying to spin "humor" into it.

Everything I needed to know

I learned in Grad School….

…they really get into things at that school

Schmalz, you're not allowed

to say which one you like best, but we are. I only have experience at the bottom end and have owned a set of all three at the very bottom end. Mavic and Easton are far superior to FSA. FSA sucks big time and I will not even give them away as a gift unless I wish to end that friendship.

Jesse

I have not ridden any of the wheels but would be happy to opine on them in painstaking detail. I am more concerned about the weather for this WE – please no rain.

Uncle Ron

Anyone wish Cyclingnews was giving a live feed..

12:23 PM – Landis attorney attacks!

12:25 PM – LNDD Interpreter dropped – French speaking lab tech isolated..

12:35 PM – The ‘yellow tie’ still looking cool, has most of his legal team around him. Looking over his shoulder for Le Mond to attack.

12:40 PM – Suh looks to be a lock for the ‘red tie’ for most aggressive lawyer.

1:05 – Uncle Ron attacks LeMond. Lemond responds. Uncle Ron in trouble now.

1:05 – Lemond attacks Landis, Landis reeling. One of Landis’ team trys to pull Landis back into the race.

To Tubulars

Schmalz wrote: "…not a lot of people are willing talk out of their behinds about wheels they haven’t ridden or know nothing about."

I guess that line of logic isn’t learned until the 3rd grade.

schmalz

Easton, FSA and Carbones – I’ve ridden them all but I’m not saying which one I like best…

Tubulars

I dont think you have to talk out of you ass as the wise Schmalz seems to think to answer the the Tubular question. I think the question was getting at is that if anyone on this site has good or bad feedback on any of the wheels mentioned could they provide their thoughts. I am sure a few people out there have or know someone who has one of the three wheels. I think it is Schmalz that needs to repeat the 2nd grade.

Easton, FSA and Carbones

The comparison is much like the Hyundai adds that compare a lexus to a hyundai. You are never going to convince the lexus buyer to convert to hyundai. These guys can afford the extra $21,000 and they enjoy the fact that the car can parallel park itself. The ads are aimed at hyundai’s target market and to make them feel better about the fact that they bought the car. It is not aimed at lexus’ or landrover’s target market. So you either buy a realy good wheel and you will love it or you buy an affordable wheel that can more or less do the same things but are not even remotely in the same class.

schmalz

Dearest Tool Maker,

Please repeat the second grade, as I think your reading comprehensin is sorely lacking. The "legit question" about tubulars is, of course, legit, but my point is that there might not be a huge discussion because not a lot of people are willing talk out of their behinds about wheels they haven’t ridden or know nothing about.

And once again I did not poke fun at sexual abuse, I gave an opportunity for people to rip on Will G’s behavior because he deserves to be ripped a new one. I think keeping silent on the issue is the incorrect way to deal with it, as it lets his inappropriate behavior get swept under the carpet. I prefer to expose idiocy to the light of day, you may disagree.

And I am a tool of course, I’m a "crank puller."

Rick

I’m no lawyer, but I’m guessing defense teams who believe their client rarely resort to witness intimidation. I’ll bet the money from the Floyd fairness events went to paying the cell phone bill of this loser.

Anonymous

"…providing a forum to find the humor in a situation in which sexual abuse of a child plays a role…"

The humor can be found in Geoghegan’s blundered attempt at intimidation and at Floyd’s association. Nobody is laughing at Lemond. The "reply message" is one where Lemond (the victim) gains the high ground and has the last laugh. Nobody’s laughing at sexual abuse.

Things are not looking

too great for Landis at this stage. I don’t know what to believe any longer. It is hurting cycling so much. Nothing hopeful about this Friday. I’ve always had the greatest of admiration for Greg Lemond since way back in the 80’s and what has happened now is most unfortunate. The fact that Landis’ relationship with Will Geoghegan was ended does not change the fact that this creep was part of his team up to now. This is rough.

To Schmalz

I now see what a tool you are. I dont think the guy asking an opinion on 3 tubular choices needs responses from guys or girls that have ridden all three. Maybe just some feedback from people who have good and bad experiences with any of the three he was interested in. This site is such a joke. A guy writes in with a legit question and you would rather poke fun at sexual abuse. Your a joke!

Alan

schmalz

Tubulars – how many people do you think have ridden each of those wheels and would be able to compare them? Perhaps 10 people in the entire city, maybe?

Anonymous

Schmalz is right – making fun of Will G is totally fair game. No one thinks abuse is funny, and certainly not the hosts here….

Anonymous

What happened to the Tubular discussion – that is discussion that can actually benefit the readers…

Thanks for claryifying . . .

. . . that it wasn’t the SITE spewing odious, idiotic, insensitive blather. No, it took a first-rate moron to actually "think" of it, then type it out for the world to see.

Thanks for making it clear!

schmalz

The intent here is to skewer the fool who thought it would be a good idea to call up an abuse victem and harass them, not to make light of the abuse. I don’t think remaining silent about some idiot thinking it’s ok to abuse Lemond is the way to go.

Sorry, Dan...

He called up a victim of sexual abuse, pretended to be the abuser, recalled the incident of abuse in the hopes that the shame involved would keep the victim for speaking in public and we’re finding fun there?

I like reading your stuff. I love the photos that NYVC provides, Hungry Cyclist worth reading, and there’s a ton of great stuff that goes on here, but providing a forum to find the humor in a situation in which sexual abuse of a child plays a role is wrong.

I’m leaning towards trying the mountain bike race. I’m thinking I’d rather fall down in the mud than on a crappy crit course.

The Landis Lemond situation

So absurd and laughable it does not need discussion in my opinion. I would rather discuss positives in the sport like which Tubies to Buy.

schmalz

Play nice. We’re taking shots at the knucklehead who tried to use Lemond’s abuse situation against him.

The site didn't

make fun of sexual abuse MR. G, I did.
And besides, I’m making fun of the absurd situation that cycling finds itself in.
There’s a big diff.
Kinda like the diff between you and a prude. There’s a big diff between a simple minded, uptight twit and a prude.
Thanks for making it clear, though!

MTN BIke Race

The only thing better then a Mtn Bike race as a nice break from road racing is a Mtn Bike race in the rain. Bring on the mud!

Highbridge mtb race

The first ever mountain bike race in Manhattan looks like fun. This has been years in the making, and the guys who put this trail system together deserve a lot of credit.

I owned FSA wheels

but cheaper ones – RD400’s and RD80’s (very bottom of the range). I hate to do this but I did not like FSA. With the clinchers (and i think it is the same with tubulars) you have to remove the tire, rimstrip and use a spoke wrench that nobody ever have in stock if the wheels go out of true and they go out of true on a weekly basis. Easton and Mavic wheels are in a different league all together and that is why they are so much more expensive. You get what you pay for.

cheap FSA wheels

I have one of the low-end models and don’t like them for the reasons mentioned about needing to pull the tire to true them. Plus the braking surface is pretty narrow so your brakes pads have to be set up exactly right to avoid problems. Plus I broke a spring in the freewheeling mechanism in a race and lost the ability to drive the bike — bummer.

In their defense, customer service sent a new spring fast, and the wheels have stayed true through about 20 races.

For cheapish clincher wheels, Neuvation seem better to live with over the long haul, though I haven’t used them myself.

Will, this is Greg calling back

"I just wanted to say thanks for legitimizing me. I’m a washed up, nasty man who knows his best years are behind him. When I accused that other American tour winner, Lxxxx (shh! he’s listening!), of doping I came off as a bitter old man trying to push my way back into the spotlight. Until you called, it looked like I was doing the same thing by speaking out against Floyd. Thanks for help! Oh, and by the way, you had it wrong! I was a top!"

I’d like my spot in the Cat. 4 race please.

Ben H.

The all-carbon cosmic carbone tubulars are pretty sweet, and you don’t see them on too many bikes.

Tubulars

Anyone have thoughts on Easton Tempest Tubies vs. Carbones, vs FSAs in terms of performance and durability? The Easton look pretty nice as do the FSAs for the price.

Great Neck Crit

Whats the deal with this race? Good turn out last year? Good Course? Its only 15 miles long for the 3/4?

wait

I just re-read your instuctions and I thought they said "be incredibly offensive"
My bad!
Take it all back!

I'm writing a movie of the week script

about a washed up ex-champ who gets molested by Lance’s son Luke, marries a tranny named Amber, sets out to prove that unicorns have no performance enhancing benefits, taps Mrs. Andreu’s blackberry, and commits suicide by shooting himself atop the galibier.
I’m calling it "Touched by an Uncle"
