The Hangover 9/5/06

Section head text.

Aaron Wolfe and David Taylor do NY proud, with 3rd on GC for the Men’s 4B and 30+. Aaron also got a prologue stage win. GMSR was up in VT. In the rain I guess, I was in the rain also, opening beers – who do you think had a better weekend?

Anyone have Basking Ridge results?

Remember, you’re still on notice. Keep it clean!

mathematically speaking

the more 4s there are over time the more difficult it will be to upgrade. the curve should start to look a little like the curve of global warming…

Jon Hicks

Congratulations to Aaron, David and everyone from NYC who competed up in Vermont! beautiful place but a tough race

shaw

i can crash too – a triple threat

my new pick for bear – filip! top ten in the stacked juniors field at GMSR is amazing. the juniors there were the 2nd or 3rd fastest field at GMSR. just sick!

ETridehome

Awesome Aaron.
Are you going to make us work even harder now at Bear trying to stay with you? I hope you will still be tired:)
Congratulations!!

shaw

aaron was on this weekend! i must also thank him for sharing an important piece of wisdom with me.

my favorite wolfe moment of the weekend – prologue – 1km to go – lead group of 5 – aaron says to me "it’s go time" and all i can think is how he has enough air to talk. he proceded to jump about 250 meters later, i got out of the saddle and immediately sat back down and said goodbye. chapeau mr. wolfe.

the radical media women had a fantastic showing in the 3/4 field at GMSR over the weekend. i don’t know all the particulars, but it seemed like every time i saw the results they had 2-3 of them in the top numbers. it was great to see.

the Burlington crit in the women's 3/4 was wild

Not as wild as the come-from-behind win in the 4 race last year, but still pretty hectic. It looked like a woman from Ontario soloed to win, with the field splitting and the race leader in the second half. That second bunch finally got up to the front after some serious chasing.

Alan Atwood

They have 2 cat 4 fields for GMSR, A is the younger group (this year <35) and the B is the older group (35+).

who is the pregnant dude in orange jersey? i am amazed he beat most of his field in the hilliest race around. that’s talent!!! way to go fat dude!

selfish sandbaggers

if you were in the top ten of every stage at GMSR, you have no business racing in the four field at Bear. All you are doing is locking out someone on the wait list who could use the experience. Racing below your level taints your results and makes you look greedy. If this is the only part of your life where you are getting recognition, you need to take that up with your shrink. UPGRADE.

Anonymous

I agree, no offense but you don’t belong in the 4 field…

(and no I’m not a 4 I’m just an outsider poking my nose into somebody else’s business)

Anonymous

it’s not like they give out upgrades like candy. neither the prologue or crit at GMSR qualify for upgrade points.

Anonymous

You’d be surprised how a few good results will get you an upgrade. I’d be very surprised if an upgrade request would be denied

selfish sandbaggers

I would guess that they all meet this criteria.

"4-3: 20 points in any 12-month period; or experience in 25 qualifying races with a minimum of 10 top ten finishes, or 20 pack finishes with fields over 50. 30 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade"

Chris M

You complainers are a bunch of pansies. Aaron gets a solid result at GMSR and suddenly hes a selfish sandbagger? What crap. Give the guy a break. Its not like hes been killing everyone all season and racking up mega points. Hes wicked strong, but just showing that depth of late in results and Im sure will upgrade when he has the points – remember he had to register for Bear before GMSR, and I dont think had the upgrade points prior to this – so shut up and let the guy enjoy a couple of podiums before you villify him. Jesus, hes not even on my team, but I just cant stand people who bitch with no knowledge to back it up. In this system, you basically cant upgrade till you "dont belong in the field" in any case – thats the prob with the system – you cant easily upgrade just by being better than avg in the 4s unless you race all damn season at every race and do ok. Not everybody wants to upgrade on pack finishes either, and they arent sandbaggers for waiting for a few wins.

Mike Green says make room!

Any Cat 4 riders who would be interested in doing the Cat 3 70 mile race should contact me.

Doing well in the Cat 3 will look good in your bid to upgrade.
We’ll also keep a separate list of places for the Cat 4’s.

lee3

Well put Chris M. – I totally agree! A lot of the complainers are the guys gettin beat. To all the haters – go out and train and find a way to beat’em and thank the lucky stars that you have some decent competition in your field this season.

I didn’t say an upgrade was automatic. I said with a few good results an upgrade is likely. I don’t know Mr. Olsen and I’m sorry he was denied but that wasn’t the issue. I also don’t know Aaron Wolfe and I don’t really care if he upgrades or not (I don’t need more strong guys in the 3’s) I’m just saying when you’re consistently on top of the results in the 4’s you should upgrade.

upgrading

i don’t know how they can deny an upgrade to someone who won at Bear this spring. I got upgraded on pack finishes, without even applying really – just wrote an e-mail asking for clarification of the rules & gave my licence #. Haven’t been lighting the world on fire and wasn’t planning on upgrading until later, but, whatever.

No rhyme or reason.

No rhyme or reason

Isn’t Bear just another CRCA Park race?

If Greg had the points , no matter where they are from, winning Bear should give him the upgrade. Are they penalizing him because there were too many CRCA riders in the race?

Anonymous

The ryhm to the reason is Judy M is just nutty!

The upgrade process is a joke. The people who are responsable for handing out upgrades dont even follow the rules. Hell I know guys that are 3’s that never place in a 4 race and did no more then 5 races in the 4 field.

Upgrading

Judy look at the Quality of races you’ve done for upgrades also if you did alot of 3/4 races instead of 4/5 races she will have more consideration on the upgrading you The 3/4 races are alittle harder when it comes to out of state races then just picking the 4/5 for a possible easy win . So see the type of races Mr Olsen has been doing then you’ll see why she didn’t upgrade him.

MG

Sunday’s Pro/1/2 got a big boost with registration of 4 Navigators riders.
Weather forecast is great and there is still time to sign up for Pro/1/2, Cat 3 and Women’s races.
Separate start for first time for Cat 4 women.

1//2/3 women compete for Nancy Morgenstern Trophy(Tiffany’s Crystal Bowl).

Greg C

I think Aaron Wolfe should upgrade. I’m tired of him sitting on my wheel and then attacking and dropping me. Also I think Justin Brown, Chris M, Shaw, Slokar, that fast guy from Organic, O’Malley, Olsen and Accardi have to go as well, hell while we’re at it lets upgrade Jay too. That way I can sprint it out with Lee3 to be king of Central Park Cat 4’s.
Wow, the guys at the office will be impressed by that!

CUMMINGS

I dind’t have enough points but i was able to go from a 5 to a 3 but i have also done 30 races including 2 stage races. yehaa

J Brown

Cummings you upgraded, Nice…Great job. One less person with a good sprint that will make it to the line a bear this weekend. Woo-hoo

K King - VB

Aaron DESERVES an upgrade if he wants it based upon the fact that he races out of town all the time and has great results.

He’ll hold his own with the 3’s no question.

That being said if he wants to stay a 4 thats cool also.

Shaw you are a sandbagger.

Olsen

Yes, I always pick the easy races. Ya know, like the 72 mile Capital Ragion 3/4 race and the Fitchburg stage race.
By the way, winning Bear in the spring was a cake-walk and the fact I almost threw up my asshole at the finish line was all an act. I am also a pussy for upgrading to the A’s in CRC and have decided to pee sitting down for the rest of the year.

Prospect Park

NYV guys need to learn how to ride and not scare the shit out everyone aronud them before they make dumbass perdictions.

Think pro; ride smooth

J. Miller sometimes can’t get herself to upgrade someone from 5 to 4 then immediately to a 3 even if the results are there. Harris and Gulla both went through this a couple of seasons back.

Take a look at Riffelmacher. The guy started the year as a 4 even though he crushed the 4’s at GMSR last year. If she really followed the results of the regional racing scene she would have just sent the guy an e-mail telling him he was upgraded to a 3 based on GMSR. To her credit she bumped the guy from 4 to a 2 pretty quick this season. But the Harris thing was a joke the guy deserved the 2 upgrade and she practically made him beg for it.

Anonymous

The points system is stupid. Once you prove you can handle the bike you should be allowed to race up in cat if you want. If you are the strongest guy in the world but can’t ride in the peloton you should be a 5. If you are a 5 in strength but have the required handling skills feel free to get dropped in a 3 race.

JM

Prediction

Greg Olsen wins Bear Cat 3. Update request turned down again. Repeat wins at Bear don’t show enough all around riding ability.

lee3

I’ve heard the legendary J.Miller stories about our own CRCA prez. getting shot down after the results he’s been puttin up this and last season. E. Berend applied for an upgrade and also got the rub and here’s a guy that could without question hold his own in a 2 field – not only that but could rattle a cage or two. Question : Atwood is a frequent face @ a lot of these races and knows of the exploits of some of the stronger guys. If there’s any doubt in the minds of the powers that be, why not consult the officials that oversee the races?

Why Judy Miller hates you all

She gets hounded constantly be NYC racers looking to uprage to cat 3 and cat 2 based on ONLY park race results. They hound her, harass her, call her 24-7. After the 100000th annoying new yorker with results that dont cut it, she just gets terminally frustrated and groups us all into one big nasty group. People that deserve upgrades dont get them b/c of the people who beg for them but dont deserve them.

ETridehome

Again, if you are going to criticize someone, whether in "fake" nice language or in a vulgar manner, please identify yourself – Chris M is right, you sound nothing but like bunch of pansies or a-hole who has NO idea the circumstances that Greg and Aaron are in. Why don’t you train harder so may be you can stay on their wheels and in the process learn something.

CRCA member

Too all the WEAK haters and envious bike racers who finish in the last group in EVERY race, join NYCC and hang out with non-racers.

To Aaron and David — GREAT job. Many CRCA racers do NYC/NY State proud given that we have the park, 9W, Tweed, Bradley etc. Wonderful job to the Wolfe/Taylor duet…

Cat 4 Bear ——-
1. Brown (if he stays on the climbs)
2. Shaw
3. Mecray
15th. Lee 3
LAST…. O’M (Too much beer drinking and cider, so I’m told)

oh man that’s a nasty thought!!!!
At any rate you have to admit E.B. has put up some #’s this year and I’m sure some would agree that he wouldnt get his ass handed to’em as a 2.

I may have to sit out Bear! My apt. search and move has seen me off of the bike and not training for 2 1/2 mo. or since Unionvale. I thought Christiana may keep the form up to snuff but was handed a bitter pill.

The old way to upgrade

From what I hear, Lou Maltese would see someone ride and tell them, you’re a 2 or you’re a 3, just by looking at how they handle. That’s probably much better than the points system but hard to implement in a large organization. Local clubs who know how riders really ride can do better than bureaucratic formulaic upgrading.

Olsen

Re: Bear
Since Mike Green is allowing the 4’s to do the 3 race, I "upgraded" myself for Sunday. Who else is in for the extra lap?

Anonymous

Yeah I’m sure the only racers hounding JM are NYC/CRCA racers with their Prospect/Floyd and club race results.

Anonymous

New Yorkers are going into other backyards and kickin sand into the faces of the locals…..
I’m sure NY’kers are giving her headaches but those Floyd, CRCA and prospect races arent chump circuits!

Anonymous

Yeah let’s do 9 laps in Central Park and be out by 7:45.
If you can keep a 35 mph we can fit upgrade distance races in the time allotted by CPC.

Ironic?

Funny how people are bitching that they can’t get a Cat 3 upgrade but then turn down the chance to race with the 3’s at Bear. Man up!!!

Stop Crying

If you have the Points upgrade if you don’t have the point then Ride more and Get them and Stop crying about how the process should be if you donot like the process of the upgrading ,put you bike away and change your hobbie from cycling to Badminton .

question.

Why is Velocity so confident? Bear is not a race that you can just sit on wheels and sprint at the end. There are too many people that want it.

Anonymous

Mike BOYCOTT NYVELOCITY, Shut up its fun. If your siting hear reading this crap then chances are your some middle age dude who is losing his hair, geting fat and are pretending that any of this matters.

Vermonter

"New Yorkers are going into other backyards and kickin sand into the faces of the locals….. "

You must be looking at different GC results than me because i am not seeing much from NYCers.

Just think. You’ve got more cyclists in NYC than we have people in Vermont and you are not dominating anything.

PS- I do love your website though.

Toni G

Vermonter,

Very true. But welcome to the anonymous postings on this site, people love to post crazy stuff even if it isn’t true. Glad you like the site, we love it here in nyc also.

fields/upgrades inside CRCA club races

When I was on the CRCA board I wanted riders to be able to upgrade themselves for club races. If someone wanted to ride the A races, let them. The only controls would be to avoid sandbagging and also jumping up and down fields from race to race. But really, A races should be open to all comers. And if some new guy does a couple C races and then wants to ride B, let him.

But some other board members didn’t like it. They said it was unsafe (maybe huge fields are, but I dont think riding with newer riders is so bad (I’m a longtime A/2/master) — just keep ahead of them. And some said that getting to the A field is reward that shouldn’t be given for free.

<<<<<<<<From what I hear, Lou Maltese would see someone ride and tell them, you’re a 2 or you’re a 3, just by looking at how they handle. >>>>>

HarrrrrHawHa-ha-ha!!! That’s exactly true! I remember that’s how I upgraded! The (then it was Reginald Pilling) memorial race was coming up in a week and Roy’s Sheephead was offering a nice silver Colnago Mexico for first place and I wanted it so badly. The week before I begged him to let me upgrade to A and he said. "Let me watch you ride today, and we’ll see." After the race was over, he said, "OK, you’re ready." (I’m sure he forgot all about it during the race, as he was getting really old by then). Next week I was lucky: both Vince McDonald and Hewitt Thayer were out of town and I won the frame. Sadly I pretzeled it five weeks later in a crash. So maybe I wasn’t "ready." Al Toefield used the same "system" if I’m correct. Old memories. . . (I know, I know. . . who the hell gives a shite now?)
