Floyd ’06

Section head text.

An announcement from Charlie I

I have submitted the permit for the 2006 Kissena Tuesday Night Race Series at Floyd Bennett Field. The Series will begin May 2 and end Aug 14 (no race on Tuesday, July 4).

Couple of things:

1. Attention all racers/graphic designers: I want to have a cool leader’s jersey next year and need an original design. If you design a jersey for free I will let you have your company logo on the jersey or you can race the entire series for FREE. Professional graphic designers only please. Must be able to submit an AI file with vector graphics.

Email me offline at cibike@aol.com if you are interested.

2. Looking to start a dialogue on having more weekend races at Floyd. The Park Rangers enjoy having us race there and the races offer less headaches than Park races.

‘Give ’em some reasons to race here, Charlie!’

Reasons to race at Floyd:

Later start times

Longer races

Separate start times (no overlapping fields)

Less problems with pedestrians

Problems with Floyd:

Flat (but not easy)

Rough road service

Difficult to get to by bike (but later start times help)

Spring races are hit-or miss with weather. (Floyd does not get plowed like the Parks so a snowstorm a few days before a race could cancel the event.)

Something to think about – there is another runway/course that could be used – could “spice up” the racing by changing the course from time to time.

As always, I welcome all suggestions!!! Please share with this group.

Speaking as a racer, I really like racing at Floyd. Well maybe not “like” — it’s too hard. But it’s great. I would try to go to more weekend events there.

charlie,

thanks for the info, and more importantly for all your hard work in setting up the races. i think that more floyd races is a good thing. the extra couple miles between prospect and floyd might be a bit rough in february/march for those of us riding down from manhattan, but they’ll put hair on our chests (if not on our legs). the races at floyd tend to be tough and interesting, and if racing there also means that we can do longer races, then we all benefit.

two thoughts:

obviously, there were some really unfortunate issues at central park this year, but, for what it’s worth, i would hope that extra floyd races would come at the expense of races in prospect, as opposed to races in central, if possible. my own opinion is that, from a racer’s perspective, central is the best race venue in the city by pretty good margin, while prospect is probably the least interesting of the three we currently use. furthermore, those of us who aren’t in CRCA don’t get to race much in central, the small handful of spring series races held there end up being our only chance to race there, aside from mengoni.

second, if we do have the opportunity to race on different sections of road at floyd, i would also suggest that we could all benefit from racing on a more crit-like course on occasion, if it would be possible to find a tighter circuit. the courses we currently race on don’t offer much in the way of cornering, and i think we could all use the practice (i know i need it).

just my two cents–thanks again.

I agree that a more crit-like course would be a nice change of pace for the NYC riders, and likely draw a handfull of out-of-towners. What are the chances/obstacles/etc to getting a strip of new asphalt around the regular course?

Jason

What about having a Time Trial or 2 out at Floyd as well. For those of us not in CRCA it is hard to find a Time Trial close by.

karlwithak

if possible is there a crit course out there we can use?? maybe a big ” L ” or figure 8. the last thing NYC riders need is more racing in a straight line. We need to have more technical racing, maybe people will actually start to echelon in a proper manner too

Luis

Charlie,

Thanks for the hard work in putting these races together.I totally agree on how we should have more crit like races. Another thing is races need to be longer. Most races dont qualify for license upgrades because of the distance.

dan

Charlie,

First off thanks for all of the hard work, it’s really appreciated, even if it’s not always said. I second Jason’s idea. A TT series would be great for those of us not in CRCA. And some longer circuit races at Floyd would be great. If we could use some of the other roadways at FBF that could create a great course. I’d personally likethe idea of a later start time at Floyd on the weekends then all the early am races at Prospect.

I’ve loved racing at Floyd with the 3/4 men (even when getting ass kicked, repeatedly), but any chance of adding on one more field for women? Has it been tried before?

Too scared of retribution to use my real name.

Charlie, you have really stepped things up a notch at every race you put on. The whole NYC racing community owes you a debt. I hope we can have lots more races at Floyd and elsewhere in the seasons ahead. I have only one complaint: Offensive Officiating

Seriously Charlie, I agree with the other guys on here. Ann Marie is so unpleasant to deal with, she really detracts from the sport. Interacting with her is a “nails-on-the-blackboard” experience everytime. Isn’t there another USCF official you could get to help with the races?

Ann Marie

Maybe you guys should try and get Horrace Burrows to officiate. He’d be much more pleasant to deal with than me.

HB

I NOT DOING NO OFICIATING. THAT WHY WE PAY TO RACE.

THIS RACE IS NO GOOD ANYMORE. CHARLIE ALWAYS CHEAT SO THAT HIS MENGONI RIDER WIN.

Mr Green

HB Does he cheat by making you ride slow?

If you hate the race so much dont show up. Im sure most of us if not all would me much happier.

Hater!

the steve you love

Unless you wankers start working as officials, you are in no position to bad mouth any official. We don’t have enough working the races, and you waste energy dissing one of the few who will come to pretty much any race at any time. Ann Marie has a greater commitment to bike racing than most people in the area and yet you want to run her out of the sport. Smart.

Charlie

It’s a great idea, I always enjoyed the few weekend races that

Tony and Millie did, and I always preferred being able to get up at a normal hour, even if it did mean having ride a few extra miles.

Like others have said if there is some way to alter the course from the Tuesday night series, that would make it more fun to do, I for one would race there.

chris

Sunday races would be great as they wouldn’t interfere with the crca club races..so they would attract the crca racers=bigger fields.

thanks
