An early break animated by Ken Harris set the tone for an aggressive race. The break had about five riders, and looked strong for the first two laps, with Blue Ribbon doing most of the chasing. At the feed zone during the third lap, the peleton got a time reading of 40 seconds. One by one, the remnants of the break were swallowed up by the pack. When Ken Harris and Jonah Tower were caught, the pack started to breathe easier. Surely one rider all alone who had been away since the start couldn’t survive. The field worked together, but with each successive time check, the peleton was actually losing time to Daniel Zmolik, the eventual winner. About halfway into the last lap, the field conceded the win and started to think about the race for 2nd. Jon Orcutt made the first attack but was quickly covered by the flurry of attacks that followed, and no one got away. Inevitably, the field sprint determined second through ninetieth, with Daniel finishing dramatically, 4:18 ahead of the field. His averaqge speed for the race was 22.7 mph (over 22.2 mph for second place).
We had a little chat with the winner, and race animator Ken Harris:
NYVC: When did you go, and what were you thinking at the time?
Daniel Zmolik: “On the climb in the fourth lap, I thought the breakaway was slowing down, so I decided to try on my own.”
NYVC: Ken, what happened to you after your break was caught?
Ken Harris “After I came back, I attacked again and everything really strung out on the last lap. But after the last climb, there were a series of jumps where I got popped off the back. I was able to get back on, but after that we really slowed down.
NYVC: What’s next for you Daniel?
Daniel Zmolik “I will be upgrading after this race.”
