Yeah, I know there are some of you out that wonder what us in blue are doing while you’re racing your butt off. Well, now’s a chance to find out.
Seriously folks, we do have a need for more officials to work the NYC races. The few of us that do all or most of them could use a few days off to enjoy the other things we do (and in my case the other 10 million things I need to do). I am trying to put together a clinic for new officials that would take place in Nassau County (as there is some interest from the east end of Long Island as well). If you would like to become an official, or just ask some questions, please contact me at alan_atwood@hotmail.com and I will do my best to answer them (and get your interested in coming). The seminar is usually a few hours long and the test is open-book with a rule book at your side. How easy is that? And the more people we get, the less everyone needs to work. The idea here is we can get more folks involved and the ones that are working to death can have some help.Â
So if coming to the other side of the bike racing fence sounds like fun, or a challenge, or you just want to help out, please let me know. Once I have a solid group of interested people, I’ll start setting up the time and place.Â
Thanks…………..Alan Atwood
is melito and official
Oh please Ray. We don’t need a hot head official that is full of themselves! Beside you need to get a haircut in order to represent you long hair hippy through back… Geez clean yourself up first.
Hot headed officials full of themselves?
Isn’t that a job requirement?
They would be, ummm, working way too hard for way too little gratitude and way too much attitude from racers, right? Waking up at ungodly hours to NOT race (essentially marshalling), and being one of the last to leave the race course after all the victory salutes have been done.
Sign me up!
Alan, how about listing the many perks and benefits associated with the job as a way to lure in prospective candidates? Common, give us some tales of the strippers and “official gruppies (sic)” and sordid stuff that happens back on the bus after the races! Ill sign up myself!
you can upgrade yourself? Just curious. I think that if one can do that we would have loads of NYC officials. Just kidding of course.
After the workshop – do we take the exam the same day? Is there a fee associated with the exam? How long does it take to know the results? Is the exam multiple choice or essay or combination? How deficient are we with officials in the tri-state area? As an official are you paid to officiate a race? If so, is there a rate sheet an official must adhere to or can they make up their own rates?
I guess some of these things are covered in the workshop – I am interested provided the weekend fits my calendar with the family. When you thinking?
