I thought I knew about bike racing, having entered (and placed) in three "citizens" races as a junior, and observed the corestates classic in philly as well as a stage of the tdf firsthand.
Into my 20's and 30's I never stopped riding, but my preferences shifted from pretty lugged steel with chromed forks to heavy one speed coaster bikes with fenders and wide tires for commuting and hauling.
I'm glad to know a little more about bikes and bike racing than before, but mostly I know now that I know very little.
In 2005 I bought a cheap fixed gear and rode it everywhere, including my first trip to prospect park. Midway through 2006 got a usac license and did a few cat 5 races using the same bike I've had since I was a teenager. Columbus SL tubing and 6 speed shifters on the downtube. Hey, it was Campy!
Upgraded to cat 4 in 2007 and joined Kissena. Bought a modern bike, a gorgeous used titanium Lemond with shimano 9 speed. Tried my hand at the Velodrome. Got a few top 10's and 5's.
Then in 2008 I won a few preems, no real results yet though. More track racing. Track bikes are easy to maintain. At state championships, won silver in men's cat 4 keirin, silver in the men's cat 4 team sprints, and gold in the master's 30+ team sprint with two fellow Kissenas both named Eric.
Looking forward to riding a bit o'cross and getting muddier than thou.
