Hangover June 25, 2012

Mon, 06/25/2012 - 10:34am by schmalz

It was a busy weekend of racing and it included the bane of a result gatherer's existence, the stage race, so I will get right to typing names down, as I have stuff to do.

First the easy stuff, at Sunday's Lucarelli & Castaldi Cup race in Prospect Park, John Durso of Colavita Racing won the pro/1/2/3 race. Peter Olmsted of Thru It All Body Shop won the cat 4 race. Francisco Ramirez of Empire Speed Team won the cat 5 race. Results are here.

At the Rapha Gentlemen's race in epic New Hampshire (you probably weren't invited), Team 9W wins the race and 27 cases of beer, which will help reduce their incentive to win more races? Check the raphia site for forthcoming black and white stills and moving pictures.

At the CRCA Alpine Hill Climb presented by the I Will Foundation (which has results posted in a PDF that prevents copying and pasting the winner's names—uncool!), Brian Dobes of Westwood Velo won the cat 1/2 category in a time of 4:36. Suzanne Lucash of Cyclelife/USAGF Capital won the women's cat 1/2 category. Anthony Fatuzzo of Team Cosmic won the cat 3 category. Brittlee Bowman of the CRCA: Innervation Fitness/Stan's NoTubes Women's Racing Team (yeah, I had to type out that name) won the women's cat 3/4 category. Ken Harris of the CRCA won the single speed category. David Flores of Houlihan Lokey won the cat 4 category. Julian Pantoja won the cat 5 category. Results are here.

At the Giro Del Cielo in Sussex County , NJ, Emily Spence of BH/Comedy Central won the women's cat 4 criterium, stage 3 road race and the cat 4 GC. Victoria Brumfield of the CRCA won the women's cat 3 road race. The final GC results haven't been posted yet, but I know that Alvin Poblacion of BH/Comedy Central won the cat 3 overall. Results are here.

On the Oakland side of the ridge, not far from where that guy died defending his "KOM", there is a long, straight and very steep road which goes up to the ridge. Longer and slightly steeper than River rd, and dead straight...it's a good climb, and the descent was on strava. the problem is, there are cross streets and cars parked on the side of the road. not much traffic, but it's not impossible that someone could show up at the wrong moment...and if you were descending at top speed you'd be toast. Just not very smart to compete for that one.

Yea...when I lost my KOM on the Bear Mountain descent, I was able to rationally think it just wasn't worth trying to top that board again.

no shit, sherlock. but that still may not be enough to avoid jagoffs swerving to avoid potholes. can't hold your line unless the road is as smooth as a bmw test track? then don't race in the park.

Luke Keough (Sandwich, Mass./Team Mountain Khakis p/b SmartStop) came around the final corner with a slight gap on the field, but Tyler Magner (Athens, Ga./BMC-Hincapie Sportswear Development Team) hadn't given up. Remembering his third-place finish in this race in 2011, Magner drilled. Not realizing Magner's proximity, Keough sat up and began his celebration prematurely as Magner sped around him barely beating him to the finish line to collect the first Stars-and-Stripes jersey of his career.

By: Eliot Chainline
Mon, 06/25/2012 - 8:21pm

is tough....and a strong rider - i spun next to her in the master's 1-4 race in the park a couple of weeks back. glad to hear she's OK.

as far as the guy who lost control of his bike because he hit a pothole - he wasn't the only douche with bike control issues. the entire back stretch guys were swerving wildly to avoid the holes in the road. Totally sketch. It's not that hard to ride over and through a friggin' pothole - but they don't/won't to protect their $3,000 deep dish rims that are helping them gain those precious seconds while surfing the middle/back of the pack all race long.

The woman in the 4 race is fine. She had to get some stitches in her head, but will be ok. Tough cookie she is. She was brought down by a rider who took his hand off the bar to wipe sweat off his brow and he hit a pothole and lost control. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
