RACE RESULTS

Hangover 6/20/2011

Mon, 06/20/2011 - 11:41am by schmalz

It was an eventful weekend of racing in New York, and any extra words from me will just get in the way, so let's recap what happened.

At Saturday's CRCA Club Points Race, Bryan Borgia of Rapha Racing won the A race. Fabienne Gerard won the women's race. John Blake of Foundation won the B race. Joel McCarthy of Sid's won the C race. Results are here.

At Saturday's Lucarelli & Castaldi Cup Race in Prospect Park, Augusto Sanchez of Mengoni continues his hot streak by winning the Pro/1/2/3 race. The Unattached Errol McLean won the cat 4 race. Randhy Rodriguez of Brooklyn Arches won the cat 5 race. The well written recap (swiped from our comments section—I am lazy—never forget that) is below. Results are here.

I haven't seen any Housatonic results yet, so if you won, for goodness sakes pretend to be someone else and congratulate yourself!

Finally, at Harlem, German Leif Lampater of um, a team (the team affiliations aren't up on the results) won the pro men's omnium. Douglas Repacholi of Australia won the pro elimination race. Leif Lampater (still German) won the pro points race. Godfrey Pollydore of Flying Ace won the keirin exhibition. Kristin Lotito of Houlihan-Lokey Sanchez won the women's pro 1/2/3 race. Godfrey Pollydore also won the men's 2/3 race. John Blake of Foundation won on consecutive days when he won the cat 4 race. Results are here.

Today’s Pro 1-2-3 race @ Prospect Park went down kind of like this. A breakaway formed approximately 2 laps into the race. Representation in the breakaway was 100% complete with the exception of United and Foundation. The breakaway consisted of the following: Augusto Sanchez, MEngoni, Stephan Dioslaki, Metra/Cycles 54 John Durso Colavita, Rafael Urzadowski Northeast, Ricky Gargulio Colavita, Brian Breach Mengoni, ?? JV Guy, and Michael Perlberg. Amazingly, all of the leaders’ jerseys (Sprinter’s KOM and overall leader) were represented in this group. A huge gap quickly opened up and United & Foundation were unable to close it down. Dioslaki took the 2 sprinter’s jersey laps for the day. Sanchez (already the KOM leader) took the 2nd KOM lap and it was at that point that things got mixed up a bit in the breakaway. Three guys fell out. Breach, JV guy and Perlberg were unable to hold on after the climb. Sanchez also fell off but after making a big effort, was able to tag back on to the leaders group. So it became 5 guys in the lead with Breach, JV and Perlberg in the “chase group” and the field well behind them. Things stayed that way for the duration of the race. In the end, Gargulio made a huge attempt approx ½ mile out with Durso (GC leader) hot on his tail. Sanchez jumped aboard and passed Durso and then it was Dioslaki. In the finishing sprint, Dioslaki passed Durso and barely missed overtaking Sanchez who ended up winning the race. Results were as follows:

1. Augusto Sanchez Mengoni
2. Stephan Dioslaki Metra/Cycles 54
3. John Durso Colavita
4. Rafael Urzadowski Northeast
5. Ricky Gargulio Colavita
6. Brian Breach Mengoni
7. JV Guy
8. Michael Perlberg
27.4 mph avg speed

This is a Post Cycle Therapy drug after you have finished your test cycle, this would be something you take to gradually get your body back to normally producing test, so wasn't being used for it's fertility effect.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (July 21, 2010) - USADA announced today that the independent American Arbitration Association/Court of Arbitration for Sport (AAA/CAS) has issued a written decision that Alberto Blanco, an athlete in the sport of cycling, committed a doping violation and will receive a two-year suspension for the offense. Blanco, 29, of San Mateo, California, provided a sample on December 15, 2008, after completing the second stage of the Tour of the South China Sea competition held December 14-21, 2008. The sample resulted in an Adverse Analytical Finding for testosterone metabolites of exogenous (i.e. synthetic) origin, which are prohibited in the class of Anabolic Agents on the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List, which has been adopted by the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing and the rules of the International Cycling Union (UCI). Blanco’s two-year period of ineligibility began December 15, 2008, the day of his positive test. As a result of the doping violation, Blanco has also been disqualified from all competitive results achieved at and subsequent to the 2008Tour of the South China Sea competition, including forfeiture of any medals, points, and prizes.

31 year-old Jared Bunde was suspended from cycling for two years after he failed a doping test and tested positive for clomiphene on July 28 at the Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic. His suspension begins October 15, when he accepted the penalty. Bunde forfeits all results, prizes, points, and medals after that date

Thank you Victor. Tragedy averted.

To Dumbracer: The rational thought is photogs are a luxury. They are a newer thing that older folks didn't have in the early 2000s and before so the old guard doesn't expect it like the new guard. But internet whining is so passe. Internet begging is so much more fashionable. Paying for services you want/need is even more chic. Get off the crazy whining train.

There are a couple of other CRCA riders doing RAAM. Jim Williams (age 52!) and Cisco Liuzzi are on a 4 man team, UTAC Velo - Team4HIV Hope, that is currently in 7th place out of 19 teams. They just finished 1,200 miles and are over the Rockies, and heading into Kansas.

Apparently Cisco is getting a little hungry. His last tweet:

Your sponsorship is that important, that you are relying on NYVelocity chat boards to source your "coverage". With all respect to all of us here on NYVelocity, I don't think this counts as 'coverage'

While I am sure that the hipster dude in PP returning home from a big Friday night out was impressed with your breakway, I don't think that Versus was focused enough to catch it, so I am sorry you did all that work up front for publicity without getting your 'just' rewards with a couple of happy snaps.

This isn't meant to be conentuous or adverserial...If you ever become fortunate enough to land yourself on a sponsored team - where sponsorship is important in order for you to continue at a top level - you too will be hoping and trying to get photos and write-ups. These are the things that Sponsors not only want, but require in order to continue funding the sport that we're all so passionate about. Same goes for being in a breakaway. Let me know when and if you ever rise to that level. You'd certainly have a better understanding at that point and wouldn't be knocking this request. BTW - there ARE photos out there.

Really nice to see such a great spread in the Journal today about yesterday's race. The pictures are even more impressive in the actual print edition.
The day was an absolute success. Except for the 2 kids that went down in lap one, turn one of the 17 year old race, I didnt see any major skin scraping. The road surface which was reported earlier to be very rough was downright smooth in some places. (turn 4 was newly paved). The pro races were very aggressive and the nice sized crowd really seemed to really enjoy it.
Great job to John Eustice for introcing the new format and bringing in top talent to race against NYC's best.
Yes, the excellent weather helped, but that was the most fun day of racing we have seen in a while around here.

I am not a bike promoter and I realize appeal of long road races....but seems to me that the future of cycling is crits and circuit races. And the later being 5-10 mile loops whereby you have a much easier time managing cars and the local people that the race is present. You are out on some distant road in CT hurling down a hill at 50MPH on a 27 mile loop...seems very difficult to manage

Mon, 06/20/2011 - 5:35pm

i am sorry but the yellow line is a non issue, common sense has to prevail.

The officials marshall the race but just because they are an official does not mean they have any common sense or street smarts. We had to scream at official on motobike to break as they were trying to pass a truck down a hill with a car coming straight them.

Priority number one look out for your safety and the riders around you, the race is just a race.

Mon, 06/20/2011 - 5:17pm

Yes I hope evryone is OK. Another thing to note is that while it is common for the pace car to go with the break but the field had no pace car the whole race since we had a solo rider up the road from about mi.7 in. During the race I remeber thinking more than once that it seemed a little dangerous that we were hurtling downhill at 50mph with no car in front of us. This crash may have been avoided if we had a pace car.

Yellow Line
By: J. Edgar Hoovercraft
Mon, 06/20/2011 - 4:58pm

Thanks Mark. I hope everyone is OK.

Regarding this comment, I sure hope people would cross the line rather than stay in danger. This whole "never ever ever cross the yellow line" thing has been taken too far. Of course you don't cross it under normal circumstances, but I think officials don't realize that it is often safer to momentarily use it as a way to avoid a crash (cars present or not). In Canada, they seem to understand this and they treat us like bike racers, not morons.

The crash that I that I think is being discussed occured in the master's 40+. With about 1-2k to go a car pulled in front of the field as we were fanned out across the road at about 40mph while fighting for position. I was abouth 5th wheel and the carnage happened behind me. I heard that sickening sound of squealing brakes followed by the sound of bodies and bikes hitting the deck. Someone who went down in the crash said that some guys had nowhere to go and went over the yellow line. He said that the car hit a downed bike or 2 but it is unclear if any riders collided with the car. Troy did not go down -he finished 2nd. I think that Mark Pohndorf from Colavita was hurt but I don't know if that is accurate.

L&C Report Correction
By: Marc Bertucco
Mon, 06/20/2011 - 1:29pm

From my teammate Michael Perlberg, and my own point of view from back in the field, here's how the end of Saturday's race actually played out:

Dropped from the lead group, Perlberg(Kissena), Breach(Mengoni) and Quiterio (JV Racing/ MONTECCI) are chasing but cannot reconnect. With one lap to go Breach and Quiterio drop Perlberg at the top of the climb.

Behind, the main pack starts to fracture with small groups splitting off the front and dangling before getting reabsorbed by the charging field. And coming into the sprint, one of these small groups catches and passes the tail end of what was the lead group, and sprint for the last few remaining money spots.

Official Results:
1. Augusto Sanchez (GS Mengoni) 1:37:19
2. Stephan Dioslaki (Team Metra / Cycles 54 p/b Wendy's)
3. John Durso (Colavita Racing)
4. Rafal Urzedowski (Northeastern Hardware / CJCT)
5. Ricky Gargiulo (Colavita Racing)
6. Brian Breach (GS Mengoni)
7. Stalin Quiterio (JV Racing/ MONTECCI)
8. Everhard Paredes (JV Racing/ MONTECCI)
9. Eric Ragot (Kissena)
10. Rob Brown (Major Taylor)
