Hangover 9/14/2009

Mon, 09/14/2009 - 11:45am by schmalz

It's coming to the that time of year – when the spigot gets turned off and we can no longer dance through the sprinkler that is the road bike racing season. But this past weekend allowed us another pass through the yard drops before we go inside and towel off.

At the Calvert-Toefield battle of the classes, Johan Burrowes of WS United wins the title of king of the combined 3s and 4s, with Jeff Owens of Kissena winning the cat 5 race. Results are here.

At the CRCA Club Race, Bryan Borgia of Rapha won the A race; Kristin Lotito of Sanchez Houlihan-Lokey won the women's race; Steve Marmo of Setanta won the B race; and Kevin Rooney won the C race. Results are here.

At the Nancy Morgenstern Memorial 2009 Fall Bear Mountain Road Race, Dan Vaillancourt of Colavita/Sutter Home won the Pro/1/2 race; Beth Miller of Anthem Elite Team won the women's 1/2/3 race; Mark Alden of Blue Ribbon-Translations.com won the 40+ race; Matt Doron of Global Locate won the Cat 3 race; Lyn Frampton won the women's 3/4; Matt Sack won the cat 4A race; Danny Habig won the cat 4B race; Al Blanchard of Westwood Velo won the 50+ race; Mark McCarthy won the 60+ race; and Kevin Rooney of CRCA won the cat 5 race. Brief results are here.

At Univest, Amore & Vita have their way with the all the races, winning all three stages. Read about it here. We also send out our wishes for a speedy recovery to John Loehner of Empire who crashed and broke his leg.

Wild cards for the road race include Diana Ziliute (Lithuania) who has had a sort of renaissance this year, as well as Italy's Noemi Cantele, solo breakaway artist Emma Pooley (Great Britain) or perhaps even up and coming American Evelyn Stevens!!!!!

if you remember the long course Grant's Tomb race. It only happened one year. The next year the race was snowed out. After that it was just the short course this currently used.

I miss the Moosic mountains race in PA. Extremely well organized and a good course.

Tour of Cats
By: Mr Mavic
Tue, 09/15/2009 - 2:14pm

Day 1 is a TT - 2.5 miles at about 4% uphill.

Day 2 - Is similar to Day 2 last year but in reverse. If you remember the long downhill at the start of day 2 last year... well you finish going up that this year. A long 5 miles big ring finishing climb. This year has the harder finish but you go down Susquehanna Turnpike so that is easier.

Day 3 this year - you go down to Round top and hit some rollers and then finish climbing Palenvale Mtn. Much harder than last years day 2. This is going to be an epic climb with great views and switchbacks.

I would say this year is harder but not by much. Longer finishing climbs each day.

Reads like most of the posters here are better at complaining, flaming and crying about their lack of funds then riding let alone racing bikes. If you cannot take a day off in September, bummer; last I looked sick days and personal days still count, but if you are too afraid to climb a hill outside of CP and 9W I guess you will find every excuse not be on a bike.

The new course loops are going to be really nice this year. Day 3 going up Pallenvale mtn is going to be one of the best climbs in the NE for a race. I agree however that at the end of the race season most people dont have the funds or the vacation time to take a 3 day race weekend. I raced last year and had a blast but once I saw that I had to take off Friday for the race this year I decided to skip it. If anyone has the days and funds to race this weekend I would recommend going. The towns (Hunter and Windham) are great with lots of place to eat and stay. They are probably the best race town venues on the calendar. Oh and next year the World Cup for Mtn biking will be in Windham the week before the World Championships. Windham has a great cycling scene...

Bear can't be in August. The park is too crowded in August to have a race. That's the same reason we have a race in May and not June.

Dad, you do know you can bring the wife and child to the race?
Your race will be no more than 3 hours. Your wife and child can go fishing or hiking. Or, leave them at home. Unless you are abandoning them the rest of the year you should be able to get a day off at the races.

Dieter, someone else was right on the money. You can't expect a working guy to take a three day weekend after labor day. Bosses don't understand that. What you should have done is allowed riders to do three days or just two.

By: dwdrake
Tue, 09/15/2009 - 12:32am

Because I - along with the organizing committee (Catskill Mtn. Foundation) - want the race to grow and this was the next step. Friday is proving a tough one for folks to handle, but we've done our best to keep things tight and late in the day so people - at worst - have to take a 1/2 day.

Besides, GMSR has 4 days over a holiday when normal people are drinking beer...

The model that a lot of these races forget is KIDS and WIVES and other things to do. By: bare mounty
Mon, 09/14/2009 - 5:25pm

i'm not saying it wasn't hard or competitive... the course is brutal and as long as a few strong guys are there, it's going to be a hard race to do well in. i just think that with such an awesome course, it's a shame for the race to be small and basically uninteresting. personally i think it would be far cooler to have a field of 100 and hopefully see some new faces up in the mix rather than a field of 40 with the usual suspects running away with it and leaving the field with little or no chance of getting back into the race after the handful of heavy hitters go up the road.

Mon, 09/14/2009 - 5:08pm

that's a good point, actually. if the bigger cat 1 teams are all going to be out getting their asses eusticed by the ukrainians, then bear could be a great opportunity for up-and-coming cat 3's to prove themselves against some a smaller field of 1's and 2's on a demanding course.

Self-important advice to Mike Green
By: Noah Drainhole
Mon, 09/14/2009 - 5:02pm

While Bear is a mainstay on the calendar, CRCA should seriously consider moving the date to August or eliminating the later season race altogether. Otherwise, just make it a lower category race and put the 3's with the P/1/2 field. Make em suffer.

I checked the link, since the sirens suggested this guy must have won like 5+ races this year and hasnt upgraded. What do I find? A couple of second place finishes in tough races before Bear on Sun. Some solid Mtn bike racing to give the guy a great base, and a few results this year, finishing with Bear on a great win. Congrats to Danny - worked hard, and it paid off with his first ever big race win - winning Cat 5 at Spring Series 2 loop jerk fest doesnt count in my book. Yes, time to upgrade for 2010, but not a minute too soon in my opinion! Good job.
