A strong contingent of New Yorkers traveled to Quebec to compete in the Coupe des Ameriques, a 4 stage 3 day Masters race. The strongest showing was put in by Jason Bremer (GS Mengoni), who won the Category A race (men's 30-39). New York's 'most selfless rider' solo'd the last 5k of the prologue, a 19.5k hill climb, then was 2nd in the TT the next day. He then singlehandedly chased down a 2 man break in the stage 3 crit, shelling half the field in the process.
Bremer took second in the final stage road race, while Matt Howard (CRCA/Blue Ribbon/Translations) made an unsuccessful raid for the podium, missing by three seconds.
Other New Yorkers making the trek to Quebec included Caryl Gale, who won the 40+ women's criterium and finished 4th overall; Tony Settel and Roger Friedman, who demonstrated their usual form in the time trial, taking 5th and 7th place respectively in the 40+ field; and Bob Clifford, who won the 60+ time trial and finished 2nd overall.
Another notable performance was turned in by Ted Neu (CRCA /Visit Britain), who rode the prologue on a borrowed 'cross bike, then the last two stages on another borrowed bike, 2 sizes too small. Ted discovered a crack in his road frame the morning of the prologue.

Tony flew in the TT. When we heard his time we were sure he had to have won. His time was 4th fastest of day, all age-groups.

Alan's right, it's a great race. Four stages in three days, excellent courses, beautiful scenery, good food, nice housing, etc. See coupedesameriques.com for details, and put it on your calendar for next year.
It's definitely NOT Housatonic; but much nicer. Sutton, Quebec is a very friendly community about 6 miles north of the U.S. border from Richford, Vermont. They host a terrific masters stage race every year at this time that is very competitive and well run. I used to go there all the time when my old club (Green Mountain Bicycle Club in Vermont) would race up there; we had a pretty large contingent and I would serve as D.S. for all my clubmates. It's a great race as I'm sure all the NYC'ers who went would attest to. And the locals really like the race and go out of their way to accomodate the organization. When do you see that in the U.S.?

Thanks, Ted. Mark Alden set me up in the prologue by attacking our group with 1k to go. Then I heard Thomas Pennell cheering us on, and he yelled that it flattened out with 300m to go, so when I saw that marker I took off.
Mark did the same thing again in the road race on Sunday, shattering the field on the last climb. He finished 7th and moved up to 5th on GC.
Matt's prologue ride was awesome. After Jason blew everyone away, Matt had to duke it out with three guys for second place. The uphill course flattens a bit with 500 meters to go and they were sitting right on his wheel at that point, but he just kept pushing and held them off. Nicely done.
