Wild Weekend of Racing

intern josh here again, dan and andy send their regards and wish you all well from their cabana on the beach. let’s recap who’s training plans came together this weekend, shall we?

At the L&C cup in PP, Moser was in attendence but didn’t win. He was apparently in the top 10 the whole race and sat up for the sprint, saying it’s dangerous to sprint when not in shape. Do any of the actual results besides this matter (kidding!)? The Pro1/2/3 race was won by Amaury Perez (unattached), cat 4 was taken by David Vollbach (Kissena) and the cat 5 race was won by Samuel Torres (unattached). Full results here.

Almost at the same time in the other park in that other borough, the CRCA race and Women’s 3/4 Development p/b Bike Doctor NYC was being held and it was a field sprint kind of day. The A field was won by Euris Vidal (Foundation), the B field was won by some hack named Josh Sakofsky (siggi’s/NYVelocity) and the C field was won by Jamisen Ogg (Cause & Effect). The Women’s 3/4 race was won by BrittLee Bowman (Innervation Fitness/Stan’s NoTubes). Full report and link to results here.

Results for the TT’s taking place in NJ can be obtained here. Notable NYC performaces on Sat were Phil "The Legend" Penman (BH/Comedy Central) taking 2nd in the 1/2/3 and 2nd in the overall, Rob "The Mensch" Rakowitz took 3rd in the 4/5 field and David "(sorry I don’t know you and so will not assign you a nickname)" Carr (Setanta) won the Masters 45-99 field.

NYC SS TT was held at FBF. Results are somewhere.

And for those that want to be sick, here is a funny video:

Late edition UPDATE!:
In the race to be the most midwest, I was informed Dan Schmalz, the ever podium placing DA and assorted others won by managing to drink the entire supply of Hamm’s (in a can, no less) from Paul’s Big Game Tavern in scenic Iowa. Congrats guys!

Loser

Shame shame shame shame a 61 year old over the hill former pro Italian bicycle racer was able to hang with a NY Pro,1,2,3 field race, and always in the top ten.

Doesn’t say much for the quality of racers in New York eh?

Poopmouth

He wasn’t in the top 10 for the entire race. He was in the top 10 occasionally but spent most of the race punching tickets near the back 1/3 of the field.

Cece Plug

He’d get to the top ten almost every time for the start of the hill and then slip back through the pack as we went up. Sure enough, every time on the descent he’d come around again. It was beautiful to watch. If you were standing at the start finish it might have looked like he rode the top ten throughout–if you were checking tickets you might have thought he was with you the whole race because he checked in at the back every lap, but not for long! I think it took him a couple of laps though, to figure out we weren’t using the jogger’s lane for a reason, because he was at first.

mikeweb

That YouTube video link isn’t working on my iPad, which is fine because I don’t want to be sick. So, thanks.

Julien Tigweld

He’s not just an “over the hill former pro” he’s probably one of the 20 greatest cyclists of all time. It’s almost unfathomable the effort that winning Paris-Roubaix must require and he did it 3 times in a row. Unless he was totally fat and out of shape (which he isn’t) he shouldn’t have a problem In a park race, it’s not that hard.

Granny

My 73 year old granny wants to know if she could enter the Pro,1,2,3, she said her chances of placing top ten are excellent.

Poopmouth

Not flaming or being a douche, just stating facts. He rode like anyone else with some fitness in a P/1/2/3 – He sat in, went to the front a bunch, sagged to the back on the hill, and bombed back to the front on the descent. Looked like any other rider in the bunch. Very cool to look over and see him relaxed (except for coming up on that crash in the final laps) and competent.

Baldo Wave Ring

Your grandma would not get the respect that we showed Moser. As a ticket puncher at the back it was great to see guys closing gaps and taking the wind so once at the top of the hill he could just float to the front.

He was really something to watch and a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of.

jkornbluh

I was happy to be one of his chamois sniffers for most of the race and purposely sat on his wheel as much as I could just to watch his form. The guy is still super smooth – the same flat back posture that made him famous, head cocked to one side, grin/grimace when pushing an effort. Thanks to Charlie and Jules for getting this together, and thanks to Marco for his great snaps.

Jules Seatmast

AVD and posting results? Since when does that pair?

He has the results only in his ‘head’ and prefers to keep it that way

Apparently a cat5 did a 20 min time on a 9 mile course… Only with AVD

Morelli Saddlebag

Well, this was my first race by AVD and he does seem to be living up to his rep (it started with changing the venue the week of the race..).

The timings were ridiculous – he had multiple people, including the winner of the 3/4 field, telling him the times were way off – crazy. I guess, what could he do in the moment? Not much, and as long as the ordering was right it’s not a huge deal…just super sloppy, and lame.

So is it really to be expected, results won’t be found, ever? Sent to USAC even?

Rip Van Winkle

I’m still waiting for results from the Ye Olde Draisine TT of 1819. AVD’s great-great-grandfather Archibald Van Dunk promised to have them posted on the town bulletin and never did. They should put fellows like him in the stocks so that we may publicly shame them.

Efes

To challenge AVD’s permit to hold the Spring Series Races and have a competent promoter run the races???

Brent O-Ring

it looked like not a single masters racer registered for the TT and only one 1,2,3 rider. Seems like folks are learning their lesson.

That TT has been a disaster year after year.

Morelli Saddlebag

The confirmed list on bikereg wasn’t accurate..the starting times list that AVD sent out Saturday had a bunch of added riders. Attendance was sparse for sure, just not THAT sparse..

Schiatta Liner

Pat Gellineau is also the same age, it was a Master’s race with a few youngsters in there, last year the overall winner was 45 it a quick race by a group of old guys and Moser fit right in.

Mohamed Stiff

To be fair, maybe there was some issue with the TT, but AVD has consistently sent this season’s SS results to USA Cycling.

erin korff

Yes, the SS TT was pretty sloppy, for sure. It doesn’t take a PhD to make a spreadsheet for TT times, so the continued use of pencils and calculators was bound to have a lot of mistakes. But with only about 30 people attending, I thought things would be slightly more accurate. Not the case….
The frustrating thing is that there’s no interest in any critical improvements, just defensiveness.
How refreshing it was to have Charlie I email everyone the Saturday RR results within hours of completion. Charlie runs a great show – AVD doesn’t….

Luchino Brakepad

Pat Gellineau lost his only bottle within the first laps of the race. I offered him one of mine and he scoffed at me. Old dudes should get your respect, not your abuse.

Logan Tank

Plenty of 50+ guys who are fast as hell. Gellineau has been racing continuously forever and he’s still fast. That’s why cycling is a great sport, you can be competitive for pretty much your whole life. I’m sure if Moser had been riding a bike more than 4 times a year he could still win a race like Battenkill easily.

Alexis Liner

Let’s do this! AVD has run a third-rate operation for years – more than a decade. Why do we put up with this? Its the worst run race/series any of us can name. AVD has heard the complaints and chosen to ignore them, or he just lacks the management ability to take corrective action. He has had his chance and proven that he won’t or can’t fix the problem.

He needs a permit, which appears to be a rubber stamp – inherited from his father. Let’s go to the Parks department with a petition requesting that the the permit go to an organization that can perform up to a reasonable standard. If nothing else, shouldn’t there be a process or a review to consider other promoters? This is within our control.

Who’s in?

Matheo Ziptie

1) Patrick Gellineau and Moser should not be mentioned in same sentenced. PG is a dangerous old man who is basically senile. USA cycling needs to limit him to 60+ races.

2) Enough of this taking AVD’S permit away. Charlie doesn’t want another series to promote. I’ve raced SS races many times and have 0 complaints. Stop whining.

Tom Threadlock

Someone once told me Pat G had been around so long that people called him old leather nuts.

Chihuahua racing

Lets do this? No,you do this, skip the spring series. Really, you want to petition a nyc race? And what happens if they take awayy the permit and no one steps up to promote? Stop being a bitch and skip the race next time around. You don’t have to do it! It’s good enough for me. Ifi place i get my money if i don’t then who cares about results past top 7. Stop the fking crying!

Anonymous Smith

Too all those whining about AVD, just don’t sign up for his races. Have an early danish in Nyack instead.
For those of us who enjoy the Spring Series, don’t f#$% it up for us.
Why so spiteful? Did AVD knock up your sister?

Only positive about a petition is that we’ll have a nice list of who the biggest whiney dooshes are.

Me, I’ll keep racing whichever races I have the time and the dough for.

Johnny Rulesy

Many of you are not in compliance with this rule. Forget the fact that many of your team kits are hideous, but this is supposed to be a rule managed and enforced by our local officials – and it’s clearly not. Go and promote a race and then come back with your big ideas about running a series in CENTRAL FUCKING PARK.

1E4. Active Clubs. An active club is one that is in good standing and annually organizes / co-organizes a USA Cycling permitted event open to members of other clubs. Newly- formed clubs may have this requirement reduced by an administrator. Only active clubs may:
a) Enter into sponsorship agreements, subject to USA Cycling regulations; b) Form one or more club race teams (sponsored or not); c) Have jerseys with more than the club name and manufacturer‟s logo.

Niccolo Tank

Mention the slightest challenge to AVD and his henchmen come with guns drawn. Charlie I is probably afraid to step on AVD’s toes for fear of his life. I bet between Charlie I and Mangoseed OR some other promoter we could find an organization to run a series well. If a petition is posted, let’s see how many signatures it gets…I bet over 200. What does the family say to that?

Penman phil

Stopped racing it years ago, if you charge and cannot be bothered to provide a result then there are plenty of other races to do. If you really want to make a stand just dont do his races, charlie , burrows brothers etc put on great fun races, just do them instead.

I was going to do the tt a couple of years ago and was warned away, later i find out they were using iphone and to this day nobody got a result.

Will be doing central park races at night you all give me 40 dollars and i ride home with the money sure to be an epic series, if it works out well i will do it every night forever, no permits, no marshalls, and no results ! And if the police stop you i never heard of you !

Moser

A few discussions ago, there was a Pro who won the Paris Roubaix, and was looking for a local NY bike race to enter.

Was that pro Moser? hehehehe

Moser to Mengoni

Tony Soprano

Hey Nicolo,
There is no mafia. We’re all just family.
And some of you really think that the Borroughs Bros put on good races?!?!? They have trouble organizing at FBF where all they need is 2 pace cars and 3 marshals. Their results are always late too. They learned everything they know from AVD. Please don’t let them take over the SS.

Jules Roazen

When we were driving to the race Signore Moser asked how many racers there would be. When I said at least a couple of hundred and he was shocked – at first he thought I was joking.

Hundreds of racers, dozens of teams, pace motos, photo finish, prompt starts; he was impressed.

Charlie Issendorf, Guardian Undici, Kissena and the all the local racers did the Brooklyn/NYC racing scene proud this weekend.

Chapeau!

Jules

RR

Josh since you like coming up w/nicknames for others, let’s come up with a nickname for you. Let the fun begin.

Josh “I love Cat 2’s” Sakofsky

Tony Soprano

If you check there website you would see the results. If you finished outside of the TOP 10,try again next time.If you did not collect a check/cash after the race try again NEXT WEEK… Stop crying and Ride you bike have a nice day.

Jules Roazen

Speaking of tears and crying. In the midst of Moser-palooza I left my shoes in the grassy triangle.

Black Sidi’s, speedplay cleats.

Nice bottle of Moser’s finest as a reward.

Tony Soprano

1. Learn English.
2. Please tell me where the results for April 19 are posted.
3. Learn how to use this forum. There is a difference between the subject and author.
I didn’t write that post.
Which Borrowes Bro are you???

Stop

Whiners – just stop racing, hang up the Sidi Shoes and expensive bicycles, stop whining about poorly promoted races. Save money and time, do something else like sewing or ping pong or organized team bowling.

Efes

The issue is that racing opportunities are limited and valuable. If we are losing “quality” race opportunities or they are compromised by a sub-par operator, then the governing bodies should know about it and hopefully take action. One can choose not to do the races, but why should anyone lose out because the races are an organizational mess, run in an unsafe manner or results are not provided? These are the basic elements of putting on any race.

The NYSBRA appears to be on top of some of the Spring Series issues. See this link for the minutes of their March 2012 meeting in section 3.b(i) regarding AVD’s providing of results:

http://www.nysbra.com/2012/03/30/quarterly-meeting-minutes-available/

Seems to me that as a first step, a complaint to NYSBRA about the Spring Series and a request to have them speak to the promoter about the general dissatisfaction among the local USA Cycling membership could be a worthwhile in an attempt to improve the Spring Series. A simple letter stating the issues and a request that they be addressed.

Brent O-Ring

I chose not to do many of the SS races this year. The ones I did seemed to be better run, better attended, and results were posted to USAC.

Some of that might be due to unseasonably warm weather. Some may be dumb luck, but aside from the TT (which most folks wisely steered clear of) things are better this year than in years past.

Efes

Is this how we all go through life…”I can’t change it” or “It’s
good enough” or “I’m afraid if I speak up I’ll lose everything”?

All I am suggesting, is a letter to NYSBRA – Spring Series races have been better, but still not great. We’d like the following:

1. Reasonable field limits
2. Reasonable protest process (allowing the results to stand from the first Cat 3/4 race through the crash was ridiculous)
3. Timely reporting of results (refund if results not posted for any race (uhh, you just paid $30 to ride around FBF in a circle for nothing)
4. Good communication
5. Reasonable race organization

Efes

Pretty good…but, time trial results with no times? Like a jelly donut with no filling. You can say its a donut, but its no longer a jelly donut. Refunds in order IMHO.

Arthur Seatpost

Seems to be little interest in this race, I would have thought with Bear cancelled there would be more interest, why is that? Saw they already cancelled 30+ race as well.

Wordsworth

Tony Soprano – would you my dear old chap prefer:

American English? Example, “He barfed all over the seat”

or

British English? Example, “The old chap vomited on the seat”

or

Italian English? Example, “Yo Vinny shit his pants Fuggedahboutit”
