Hangover 4/12/2010

Mon, 04/12/2010 - 12:16pm by schmalz

There were many races over the weekend, but with more winners than my daughter's grade school bingo night (which I think is fixed—they can't ALL win a prize!); Battenkill takes over the spotlight on this week's hangover. Let's have a look at the success stories in Dieter's Technicolor Dream Fields, shall we?

Brian Jensen of Tradewind Energy/Trek Stores won the Pro/1 men's race from a group of five, nudging out Ridgewood New York's favorite Czech racer, Mr. Dan Zmolik of AXA Equitable. Anna Barensfeld of LadiesFirst Powered by Milton CAT won the women's Pro/1/2 race. Pavel Gonda of BH-Garneau won the men's 2 race from a long two-man break.

In the rainbow races, Brendan Housler of Minerva Design Cycling / GVCC won the cat 3 Black race in front of the Luzo's duo of Miguelangel Blanco and Danny Habig. Ramon Mira de Orduna of MaxPowerCycling.com won the cat 3 Green race. In the cat 3 Women's race, Fabienne Gerard of Fuoriclasse Racing - Discover Chiropractic won, with Alejandra Madrinan CRCA/Comedy Central-Sid's Bikes second.

In the Men's cat 4 Black race, Christopher Leong of BH-Garneau won from a long break, with Phil Penman of Teany third. In the cat 4 Blue race, Arthur Roulac of Houlihan-Lokey/Sanchez won, with Erik Post of NYVelocity second, and Kevin Rooney of Houlihan-Lokey/Sanchez finishing the Houlihan-Lokey/Sanchez in third. Unattached Adam Francis won the cat 4 Men's Red race. Gregory Donovan of Kissena won the men's cat 4 White Race.

Christine Bucher (unattached) won the cat 3 women's Blue race, with Laura Lee Vo of NYVelocity third. Kristie Timmer (also unattached) won the cat 4 women's Green race, with Aimee Layton of Columbia University third.

Paul Lynch of CLNoonan/BayHillCapitalp/bCornerCycle won the junior's 17-18 race. Marcus Smith of Team Specialized Racing Juniors won the juniors 15-16 race. Peter Goguen of Team CF won the junior's 13-14 race. Philip Truppelli of Colavita Racing won the juniors 10-12 race.

From the junior results, we go to the non-junior master's results. Ed Ceccolini of Campmor/Schwalbe/notubes won the Master's 30+ race. Roger Aspholm of Westwood Velo won the 40+ race. Al Blanchard, also of Westwood Velo won the 50+ race. Scott Haverstick or ERA Cycling won the 60+ race.

Seam Smith of Signature Cycles/Rockstar Games won the cat 5 under 35 Black race. Unattached Jacinto Pereira won the cat 5 under 35 Red race. Peter Bysshe (unattached) won the cat 5 35+Black race, with Scott Wells of NYVelocity third. Tyler Merritt (also unattached) won the cat 5 35+ green race woth Wendy Palacio of Toga/RBC third. In the cat 5 35+ White race, Brandon Stringham of Managed Care Network/ Buffalo Bicycling Club won with Rod Millott of CRCA second and Brian Sullivan of CRCA third. Unattached Joe Dellorusso won the cat 5 45+ race, with Andrew Soussloff of NYVelocity third. Shawn O'Neil of Ellicottville Bike Shop won the cat 5 45+ Blue race.

45 PDF pages of results can be found here, courtesy of Atwood Racing Services and Yellow Jacket Racing.

At the Cherry Blossom Race, Lisban Quintero of Foundation won the cat 1/2/3 race. Colleen Hayduk of Verducci won the women's 1/2/3/4 race. Neal Stoeckel of Guardian Coaching won the men's 3/4 race. Kelsey Crew of Kissena won the women's cat 4 race. William Pluta of Highland Park Hermes won the men's cat 4/5 race. Bill Elliston of the Van Dessel Factory Team won the master's 35-99 race. Jon Orcutt of Axis won the master's 45-99 race. Curt Hurst of Liberty Cycle won the master's 55-99 race. Full results are here.

At Bethel, Robert Sweeting of Team Globalbike won the 1/2/3 race. Ann Marie Miller of CRCA Houlihan-Lokey/Sanchez won the women's race. Nick Lacovelli of Colavita won the 3/4 race. Carl Reglar of Team Danbury Audi/Pedal and Pump won the 45+ race. Juston Harris of Bikeway won the cat 4 race. Sean Smith of Champion System Racing won the cat 5 race #1. Sam Rosenholtz of Green Line Velo won the cat 5 race #2. Results are here.

At the Spring Series race on Sunday in Central Park, I can confirm that Mark Alden of Blue Ribbon/Translations.com won the Masters race, other results are unconfirmed, but I assume that the fellow from Innovation Bike Shop rocking an imaginary baby is doing so out of joy, and not out of the joy of parental pantomime. Check here for 140 character's worth of accomplishment at a time.

And finally, for future reference, Yann Post has been ruled a Richard for tossing out the Roubaix spoiler, the agreed-upon NYVC etiquette has always been no spoilers until the race has been broadcast on TV. I would've erased the offending spoiler, but I was keeping a strict internet radio silence yesterday, in fact, I was so strict that I have forgotten some of the internet. But be sure to check out my band's new myspace page, I just put it up and I've got some great gif animations on there.

as far as the racers' willingness goes, that shouldn't be the problem - make buying the chip part of the licensing process, and tell racers they'll never see their name on a results sheet again unless they use it. follow through on that, and then missing a few precious upgrade points or usa cycling ranking points (confusing and practically meaningless, but still, we look), and before you know it, you have 99.9% compliance.

the flip-side is obviously that each race has to have the timing equipment, and therein lies more of a difficulty, i guess. but with the current state of things, and so much agita after every single race about who was in 23rd place and "why doesn't my 35 bucks buy me a placing," etc., it would surprise me if promoters wouldn't buy in. promoters could have a stash of spare chips and charge 10 bucks for every guy who forgets his, and now they are probably profiting.

i'm assuming the stuff actually works - if it's usually faulty and requires just as much work as the current method, then ok, that's no good.

separate issue, but it would cut down on the oh-so-honorable practice of hiding in the bushes for a couple laps when the crit gets tough...

Organizations in Florida and Minnesota have tried this. It requires a strong central racing organization (which NY lacks) and a large group of racers who will repeated use the chips, not just twice a year. Also, the chips rarely work as well as they did at Battenkill and a photo backup is almost always necessary.

why not: every rider gets (buys) a chip or two with their race license. zip-tie the thing onto your fork at the beginning of the year, don't even think about it again. how amazingly expensive can it be. there would be costs and logistical issues with getting the right equipment to all of the races, but on the other hand, fewer officials would be needed to figure out the finish order, and never again would 2/3 of the field be standing around after the race bitching about how they haven't gotten their place.

i am guessing that there's a reason this hasn't happened yet, but especially after seeing that it worked very well at battenkill, i don't get it...

...........but, I can't take full credit on this one. There was chip timing there courtesy of Yellow Jacket Racing out of western NY. Without them, I'd either be dead or still compiling results for 1600+ riders (which would probably kill me anyway). Believe me, it wasn't easy regardless; but things were light years ahead of the MCF of last year.

Looking forward to the pro race on Sunday. Anyone traveling up to watch?

Sean Smith (Rockstar racing/Signature cycles) and Al Siebert (Nycmtb/Peak bikes) were 1st and 2nd overall cat1s, finishing 3rd and 4th overall in a field of almost 400 including some very fast pro riders. Nate Krax (Sids/Cannondale) also podiumed as 3rd place cat1 singlespeed."

SS TT
By: Kyllian Skidmark
Tue, 04/13/2010 - 8:29am

Van Dunk can't really be held responsible for the park service not clearing the road. Are you guys blaming CRC for the Tiorati bridge being out?

Van Dunk is working on the B plan. Which, honestly, isn't a very good one. The replacement TT would go one way from about the river road entrance in fort lee to the top of the hill in Englewood where the road is closed.

He has a permit for a TT in the park, and the park service is open to a course change. That section of road obviously sees far more traffic, and it's pretty short. It's the spring series prologue at the tail end of the race.

He probably should have put another plan in place weeks ago rather than waiting for the week before the race. I don't know what the permitting process is in the parks, but at such a late date could he even get a central/PP permit for the weekend? Sounds unlikely.

Complaining about the results not being posted seems like a pretty legitimate gripe. It is a series. Hard for people to care about the series when they can't even figure out who is placed where.

Well, I doubt they changed the fork, but were able to switch him back to his race bike.

“We saw a bad-luck incident with a couple of brake binder assemblies that loosened and allowed (the brake) pads to ride on the rim,” said Alex Wassmann, SRAM’s road sports marketing manager

my own pov after a bunch of years racing all over the east coast and beyond: anthony is a good guy who runs a lot of local races that many of us choose to participate in, and some of us even appreciate. his races offer good (local) competition, there are a lot of them, and they mostly happen early in the season when many of us are trying to find our racing legs.

Mon, 04/12/2010 - 3:55pm

Sean Smith was rumored to have pulled off to the side of the road, mid-race, to wrestle a wild boar with his bare hands. Shortly thereafter, a local farmer flagged him down to help rebuild the Holley carburetor on his '76 Ford pickup truck. How he managed to have a spare pump diaphragm in his jersey pocket at the time was nothing short of amazing. Yet, he still managed to pull off the win. He's ready for Cat 4, no doubt.

a lot of misinformation out there about me. amusing to read though, thanks.

First, i didn't sprint off the front at battenkill. i was cold and wanted to warm up and ramped it up to about 50% effort. no one followed so i raced solo.

No, I haven't raced for 5 years pro SS. I've never even raced one event pro SS. I've done a handful of endurance races over the years along with some ultra-endurance road/mtb events.

Believe me when I say, I'm about the last person that wants to be in cat 5. i've tried two times to upgrade and have been denied each time. if anyone knows someone who can put me in cat 2 where I might see some competition feel free to go ahead.
