2010 Indoor Cycling Season Opens In Princeton, NJ
Championship Roller Racing, bicycle racing on stationary rollers, sprints off at Triumph Brewing Company in Princeton, NJ on Wednesday January 27, 2010, the first of eight races in four cities. The format features two riders racing head to head, each rider pedaling furiously, perched on matched sets of wooden rollers connected to a three-foot wide diameter dial with corresponding hands for each roller.  One lap on the dial equals one-tenth mile.

In addition to the professional class, which is expected to draw some of the countries top pro riders, there is also a women?s class and a new open category for all.  Races for the women and open classes are .6 mile (about one kilometer) while the pros go the traditional roller racing distance of one mile. ?This is not easy racing? said international cycling coach, Gil Hatton, himself a former World Champion. ?I?ve got riders entered in all categories.  In the pros, once they qualify they then have to ride three more times full out. It?s tough, they?re in oxygen debt most of the race and must stay balanced up on those things too.  But, we need this.  It begins the new season for us and the riders are antsy to race?.

All race day events start at 6:30 PM with individual time trials to qualify riders in each respective category.  Pro qualifiers move on to ride quarter and semi-finals and finals down to eighth place with women and open qualifiers going straight to semi-finals and finals.  Princeton Race Director, Tom Mains described the program,  ?It?s an exciting evening. We encourage spectators to arrive early for a good table and have dinner while watching the racing. You?re actually close enough to see the effort on the athletes? faces. People cheering, vintage rollers rumbling and the announcer whipping the action – it?s pretty cool,?, said Mains.

Following the Princeton season opener, the Championship Roller Racing schedule includes events on Jan. 29 and Feb. 4 at the VFW in Emmaus, PA, Feb. 12 at Gusto in Lancaster, PA, Feb. 17 at Triumph Brewing Co. in Philadelphia, Feb. 27 at The Emmaus VFW and with a final event to be announced.
