Balloons, pigeons, time trials

Like a mumbler who’s released his flight of pigeons out into the sky, I am waiting patiently for the links to races that were released on Friday to return today with a bonanza of bike racing information, and as always, I hope to not end up covered in guano.

Saturday had the Watermelon Crit and the Balloon Festival, there are no results from the Watermelon Crit yet, but there are a bevy of results from the Festival of Balloons.

In the pro 1/2/3 road race, William Dugan of CCB racing won with Roger Aspholm of Westwood Velo third. In the masters road race, Greg Olsen of Jonathan Adler racing was 2nd overall and first in the 40+ category, followed by Mark Alden of Blue Ribbon and Ken Harris, also of Adler.

In the Junior New York State Championships, Cooper Ray of the CRCA Junior Development team won the Boys 17-18 state championship in the road race; Sam Morkal-Williams of the CRCA Junior Development team won the Boys 13-14 state championship in the road race; and Bill Golembieski from Syracuse won the 17-18 TT and Criterium championship.

Complete results from the weekend haven’t been posted yet, but one of my birdies tells me that Greg Olsen won the 40+ overall title. Results are here.

On Sunday at the CRCA Bear Mountain Seven Lakes Time Trial, many racers assumed uncomfortable positions and rode their bikes, with many successes. Lisban Quintero of Foundation won the men’s Pro/1/2/3; Ann Marie MIller of Sanchez Houlihan Lokey won the woman’s 1/2/3 race; Caroline Gaynor of PROASSHIT.dk won the women’s cat 4; Bryan Dobes of Westwood won the men’s cat 4; Steve Goldman of Westwood won the 40+; Doug O’Neil of Deno’s Wonder Wheel won the 50+; Leonard Galati of NY Velocity won the cat 5; Matthew Doran of Global Locate won the cannibal title; and Jamie Nicholson-Leener of Duetsche Bank won the woman’s cannibal division.

In the team time trial, Jonathan Adler won in the A race, NY Velocity won in the B race, and Comedy Central won the women’s race.

Full results are here.

There are no results from the Connecticut Coast Crit, but there are pictures here.

High Bridge and the Mountain bike race at Highbridge Park also have not not posted results as of yet. And at Philly, some guy named Greipel won – I think he might’ve just upgraded or something. In the woman’s race, this Ina Teutenberg won, and they both race for the same team.

Brutally technical, and hardcore MTB race right here in NYC. Props to the guys that developed the course and hosted the race. Plenty of dopers spotted in the woods.

NYCMTB.com has the results up.

Good to see some skinny tire brethren hit the dirt. Including a certain Wilson Vasquez.

Wheelsucker

lots of flats in both races and columbia was really driving it in the women’s race. motorefs weren’t letting riders from small teams use the caravan properly to get back on.

Wilson Vasquez

“Brutally technical and hardcore MTB race right here in NYC” is right! It took more energy trying to stay upright over the wet rocks that the 21 miles itself. It was a cool course, I’m still trying to recover and I didn’t even finish.

Wheelsucker

Awesome that you came out. And you are right- it was/is a hard course. No BS park riding and unless you ride that stuff regularily (every weekend), even with a big engine like yours, it can kill you and put you out of the race REAL quick. There were quite a few DNF’s by people who are great trail riders. I think people were pleasantly suprised to know that a real deal MTB race existed in the city.

Come out to the bi monthly club races.

Wheelsucker

It’s cool that Wilson gave it a shot. Several regular MTB racers and a couple of cross riders who pre-rode opted out, and chose not to race.

A light FS would be the way to go for HB if I was to pick a bike for a racer. But not necessarily a 5 inch travel bike. I race it on a hard tail but I would rather have the benefit of the hard tail on the climbs which are short and steep where I need the help. The techy section can be done on a HT but you give up a little speed through them.

Super D- sort of like one, but since you start on the bike insteading of running you have to be able to hit the first climb super hard before pinning it in the technical sections. And Super D goes pretty quick. This lasts a bit longer.

There is a DH only type trail that would merit having the extra travel but otherwise you can do it on a regular mountain bike.

And I give huge props to Wilson for showing up (I give anyone props for coming out to race it especially if that have not raced in the dirt before- it is hard.) and trying it because a few folks who came to pre-ride the day before (including some guys who race week in and week out on the dirt and one guy who races Cat 1 cross) passed on the race because they said it was too hard.

Here is a picture of one your own skinny tire brethren:

I was in the men’s caravan and saw her crash. Not sure what she was doing riding with them.

Wheelsucker

It was at Highbridge park in way upper Manhattan- above the GWB.
Go to NYCMTB.com for more details on all the parks in the city which are MTB friendly. And come out to the Summer Sprint races.

FBF races are held rain or shine. However, because of poor drainage on the course, heavy rains can leave the course flooded and unsafe for racing and the races will be cancelled if this happens. Races are cancelled onsight. Thunderstorms will cancel a race only if there are lightning strikes in the immediate area. (FYI – in the five years I have been running the FBF series I never cancelled a race because of lighting).

Tomorrow’s FBF race will feature double points for the overall and sprint competitions.

They still haven’t posted the ’08 results so I wouldn’t hold your breath for those. There did seem to be a few photographers out though.

Wheelsucker

Charlie,
What are the chances there is flooding at FBF already?
Would you find out before 6 pm?
Thanks, Primadona.

Wheelsucker

I usually arrive at FBF at 4PM. If the course is flooded and not safe for racing I will make an announcement at that time if the race is cancelled.

Great write up on the MT Bike race. A few things:

That’s still Manhattan, not the Bronx

That was the Harlem River, not the Hudson

The blaring music was Salsa

It’s Pollo Carbon, not barbecue

Wheelsucker

Charlie if possible try & communicate or make a post here somewhere on NYVC about FBF for tonight (if on or off), it would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Damned rain!

R-sys wheels are junk. There is growing catalog of documented failures of these wheels. People are getting seriously hurt, and a lot of retailers won’t sell these wheels anymore because of the problems that arise.

There are plenty of clinchers in the 1400 gram range that are sturdy and reliable. Why would you risk your life to get a sub-1400 gram wheelset, that is unsafe and one of the LEAST aerodynamic wheelsets out there. Not to mention they run $1400.

Wheelsucker

Just about at the cut out time (I have to leave work early) for going to FBF and no word- I am not traveling out there like last week to just turn back around.

Weather has been tough on FBF this year.

Wheelsucker

give it a few minutes…weather looks predictably unpredictable and charlie said he would check it out around 4.

Wheelsucker

oh keep yer knickers on….

worst case, you can go home and ride on your turbomatictrainer and hook up to the internet, and sprint against someone from carbonistan.

Wheelsucker

there’s race-antsy anxious guys all over town refreshing their browser every 10 seconds

BREAKING: FLOYD IS UNDER ATTACK FROM ALIENS. STOP. THEY’VE COME FOR OUR CARBON FIBER. STOP.

I repeat , the race at FBF is on – I’m getting in my car now. Will update if anything happens.

Wheelsucker

Can someone officially confirm the fbf race? Charlie? Hope there are not any dangerous pools in the corners

Who is this Michael Beckerman? and how did he best the mighty thighs of Schmalz in the sprint?

Check out Bikereg. They modified the Giro NJ registration so that riders can register for any of the 3 events individually. I believe they were having registration issues due to a) some people having difficulty getting off work for a Friday TT; b) conflicts with Hoosatonic and Harlem on Sunday; c) overall net cost of 3 races;

Now you can race any combination of days you want, or just one day, etc. You’ll have a near impossible time winning the stage race if you don’t race all 3, but atleast you get to race a few nice events. Those events, individually, were always super-well attended.
