RACE RESULTS

Hangover 9/15/2008

Mon, 09/15/2008 - 8:35am by schmalz

At the Nancy Morgenstern TT Festival, Michael Norton of Calyon wins the men's ITT, and Ann-Marie Miller of Sanchez/Metro wins the women's race. Many other timed races were held, results here.

Ricky Lowe of WS United shows more late season form by winning the Cadence Cup Prospect Park Series Pro1/2/3 race and also takes the overall title for the series. Radoslaw Smolaga wins the cat 4 race, while Alessandro Matteucci of BVF wins the overall cat 4 title. Greg Waggoner of Z Team wins the cat 5 race and Aaron Deutsch of Brooklyn Arches wins the overall cat 5 title.

No word from the Blueberry Circuit race in Jersey.

And just out of curiosity, say I had this friend who rode for a team sponsored by a company that was just bought over the weekend, and this company may no longer exist. What would now happen with my friend's team? I'm just asking because, you know, I 'm curious and all.

Mr Shen, send that man an autographed box of Rice-A-Roni (the San Francisco treat) as a parting gift and a version of Central Park-Roubaix the home game. And what the hell - throw in a sticker of a dog molesting a cat, while you're at it.

Central Park-Roubaix
By: Brother Historicus

Sorry to disappoint, but delighted to enlighten. It's not a race, it's a cycling video game inspired by and modeled on "Football Manager" - and a very cool one at that. Man, did it take a lot of time to design. The idea was to create teams from local riders' power profiles - complete with local team jerseys, and certain idiosyncrasies for each rider (e.g. depending on character: no socks, no helmet, yells "holja line!," or does a muscle-flex victory salute, etc.) - and the player acts as the DS throughout a whole virtual cycling season. Messrs. Shen, Ostroy, and Schmalz spent a whole season downloading PowerTap/SRM data from CRCA riders to create it. Word is that they're coming out with a multi-player online version next March/April.

One of its coolest features (as I remember one avid fan wrote in an impromptu review at the time of its release - but I can no longer find the link ... ahem, ahem) is that during the C race, Cat 5 racers will ride off-course at random. This provides not only excitement, but a degree of realism not found in other cycling video games.

Trivia for you history buffs amongst the hard-core NYVeloCitizens:
What rider(s) or incidents inspired that particular feature of the game?

Jamestown is a great race on a beautiful course really unique to anything we are used to. Real super technical sprint to the finish as well (not unsafe). Just get your a$$ in your car as soon as it is over so you are not fighting Columbus Day weekend traffic on 95 on the way home.

It should be a really fun time. VDV is slated to ride in the pro race. They are supposed to have some great pro team commitments. Not to mention, the chance to race on Pennsylvania Ave in the shadow of the Capitol will be pretty cool. Last road race of the season, such sweet sorrow.

Flat Tire
By: Wheelsucker
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 11:17am

I got a flat on the 5th lap at the top part of the course... I walked back to my car through the park. Surprisingly everyone I saw was really friendly. That debunks the myth of New Yorkers being rude. If I had flatted near the start finish line and if I had a spare wheel then I would have jumped back in the race. I would have finished but I would not have tried to place. I paid $25, got up at 4am and wanted at least something out of it by continuing to ride... c'est la vie.. better luck next time. The irony is that I was actually feeling pretty good and at 44 years old in the P123 field felt like I might actually place and make a few bucks. Now I get to wait for next year, Central park, first weekend in March, I hope it's above 30 degrees.

2 laps into the 123 race, a flat was the last thing expected. After waking at 2:30am to make the start, dismay ensued when told there are no free-laps.
Thanks to the guy who gave me a wheel. (hey, I awoke at 2:30am, remember?) Tell Charlie Issendorf that Hartford, CT loves NYC.
