I too am freaked out by the thigh high support hose he is apparently wearing, along with the cap worn backwards. He does earn Euro points for wearing white shoes. Do Brits really count as Euro, since they’re not continental, and they don’t use the Euro currency?

I wonder if the support hose have lacy tops…I can’t believe I just typed that.

mikem

…far more troubling is that millar seems to have taken to warming up in his wife’s pantyhose. let’s please make sure that this one doesn’t catch on.

Eugene

“that Charlie I takes over reporting CRCA race results…”

I have the same dream about people getting personally involved in their own club activities, perhaps in an attempt to contribute to their community.

But that means I would have to do some work myself. That would take effort. I rather you do it.

Master’s Day At Prospect Park
July 7, 2007
Brooklyn, NY

Masters 35+ / 45+ Handicap
44 miles
89 starters

1. Mark Brinken (CRCA/ReMax)
2. Patrick Mcnamara (Fiordifrutta)
3. Richard Gonzalez (CRCA/Global Locate)
4. David Sommerville (CCCC/Anthem)
5. Ray Diaz (TargetTraining)
6. Chris Dimatt0 (Bethel)
7. Will Schneider (GS Gotham)
8. Chris Castaldi (Deno’s Wonder Wheel)
9. Juan Barroso (GS Gotham)
10. James Hines (Kissena)

Brief Race Report: The second annual Master’s Day at Prospect Park was again run as a handicap race with the Masters 45+ field starting 2 minutes ahead of the Masters 35+ field. Last year’s race saw the lead 45+ breakaway caught on the final lap so the Masters 35+ riders were determined to not cut it so close this year. On the very first lap the Masters 35+ riders gained almost 30 second and if that pace continued the 45+ field would be absorbed quickly. The 45+ field would not go down without a fight thanks to the strong efforts of Geoff Bickford (CRCA/Axis), Chuck Damsky (BVF) and Ken Hochman (Deno’s Wonder Wheel) who kept the 35+ riders from only gaining 10-15 seconds per lap during the middle laps. Back in the 35+ field, Curt Davis (Fiordifrutta) led a 5 rider chase of the 45+ field with 7 laps to go causing the gap to drop to under a minute for the first time. The 5 riders were caught by the 35+ field two laps later but the damage was done – the 45+ field was now in sight and with 4 laps to go the 35+ field caught the 45+ field. The final 3 laps of the race saw small groups attacking off the front including one promising move powered by Todd Cassan (Westwood Velo) but the motivated field brought back all attackers and as the field received the bell everybody was together. In the final sprint it was Mark Brinken (CRCA/ReMax) coming around last year’s third place finisher Patrick Mcnamara (Fiordifrutta) for the win. Richard Gonzalez (CRCA/Global Locate) rounded out the podium for third. Ray Diaz (TargetTraining) was the first 45+ rider in fifth place.

Category 5
17 miles
24 starters

1. Russel Cadogan (CRCA/Sid’s)
2. Michael Bahar (Unatt)
3. Miguel Flores (Unatt)
4. Ricardo Sanchez (Orange County BC)
5. Michael Tahtabai (Kissena)

I would like to personally thank all the officials, pace drivers, registration volunteers, marshals and Reid on the finish camera. Riders – next time you see these people also offer a quick “thank you” and let them know you appreciate all their hard work.

Nice race put on by my former club. Three corners per lap, one of which is very high speed, but the road is wide.

The start/finish stretch is long and straight, then there’s a 90 degree right into a shallow downhill, then another right at the bottom. The road is wide so it’s not as hectic as it sounds. Then a bending road/backstretch into an uphill with corner at the top back to the finish.

There can be severe sunglare right in the last corner in races late in the day, but the corner is relatively slow so it’s not a problem.

Oh, I see the masters race is a win and out. Not fun.

Anonymous

that Charlie I takes over reporting CRCA race results and they get posted the next day (or at least before the next race).

Anonymous

Any info on the course and atmosphere? Same day as Park Ridge NJ Classic but you actually get 50 miles of racing if you do 2 races instead of 10miles.

Orcutt

I’m sure the pace car incident was a result of the unbelievably complicated set of branching and intersecting routes for various fields in the RR. There was a near collision of two fields approaching a cross-roads on perpendicular streets.

Anonymous

..is not a “lame” course. It is not extremely challenging, but it still has it’s challenges. It is a good course it you do not have a lot of crit experience. The road leading up to the finish is in bad shape, so pre-ride the course and pick your line carefully. Stay on the outside on the hill and you can move up easily…it is very sketchy on the inside.

Anonymous

Ok I’m a little slow but I just noticed that the Toto’s move. Totally creeped out. Must be Andy’s doing.

jft

I was reacting (or overreacting) to the one of the best crit courses within 60 miles thing. It’s not – not enough corners.

The races there are nice promotions — riders should check it out.

Orcutt

I thought the crit course was OK too – but having people sprint for KOMs with no one at the top to record the result was not. Thanks for the update Alan.

you can get coke w/ real sugar here during passover. It has a yellow as opposed to white cap.
Kosher!
Thank you jews!

The Iowa Farm lobby pushes for subsidies for corn, making corn syrup cheaper than sugar and our kids fatter..High Fructose Corn Syrup is bad I would take sugar any day and it’s our government when we stop subsidies for corn manufacturers will stop dumping High Fructose Corn Syrup in everything we buy. And then American cyclists can enjoy a Coke before a ride. Euro Coke tastes much bettor than US Coke

Anonymous

I actually thought that given the last-minute changes in 2006 the race went off without a big fuss. The course they used instead of the crit course was quite good.

Pappa Bear

Anyone know when this will be up on Bike Reg. Dont want to get closed out like the spring.

Alan Atwood

Had some issues out of Dean’s control, such as the city of Auburn tearing up his crit course 48 hours before the race weekend, and the lack of expected support from the local rotary who helped start the race.

This year the club is more involved and the crit course is back. Only 2-4 K/QOMs and 2 sprints for the road race (too many last year). Dean is one of those dedicated promoters who was really pissed about last year and hopes to get it right again this year.

I’ll be there; hope some of you can head up and support a fun event.

Alan

The powers that be were definitely considering starting the Tour in Quebec I believe.. It is French after all. But transport, logistics, travel time and costs killed that idea. I guess the closest to the US it has started is Dublin, Ireland.

Anonymous

I do like the idea of starting the race in the U.S. I mean, it would suck in terms of jet lag and travel time, but these guys are pretty tough, and think what that would do for U.S. cycling.

Anonymous

is a fine race, but being the day before state champs it’s just not going to do that well. Good chance for some easy upgrade points.

DHR

I never said all calories from HFCS. That would be pretty boring. It is a concern how do you pack on 6000 calories a day, without resorting to all junk.

An interesting prologue for future TdF, a start in Coney Island on July 4th with the cyclists competing with the hot dog eaters. Since the winning 66 nathans hot dogs represented something like 12,000 calories, they could establish a good base for the beginning of the grueling race. I imagine a stage with 12 minutes of all out eating, followed by a 8km time trial. That would be spectacular!

for a person of the same weight, a 2500 calorie/day diet has to be different than a 6000 calorie/day.

The lower cal diet should have a much higher percentage of fiber. And the higher calorie diet can have a lower percentage of unprocessed foods, protein and fats.

Think about it. Or try to eat 6000 calories day, while exercising enough to lose weight, witht same amount of fiber and uncooked veggies as in a regular diet. You are going to be in some discomfort.

JFG

I notices alot of well run races (prize money not considered) are having low turn outs this time of year. My feeling is that most of us racers are cooked come July. I started racing back in March (Bethel and have raced at least 2 weekends a months since. Too bad for the races this time of year… Look at Tokeneke, Poughkeepsie Crit and Doc Reilly – poor preregs. It must have somthing to do with us all being tired this time of the year?

290

I’ll bet that in England coke doesn’t use Fructose Corn Syrup, but simply sugar. In any case, we are silly for having this discussion.

Coke tastes good after a nice ride.

Anonymous

You’re right, get all your daily calories from High fructose corn syrup and then take a multi vitamin and your all set. My bad.

Anonymous

Only 100 riders total registered. 34 Cat 4’s. They are offering best prize money of all regional races, so maybe it’s not about the money. It’s a well run race with a good course. Maybe it’s just bad timing, coming a week after Fitchburg.

DHR

your caloric needs are not connected to your vitamin needs, other than that you should be getting them both from your foods. So as long as they consume enough foods to meet their vitamin needs, any calories on top of that can be as empty as they want them to be. If all they ate were foods that were high in vitamins, they would accumulate a surplus over what they need to function. Since excess vitamins if they’re water-soluble will just be expelled by the body there is no harm (just extra stuff in the pee), or if fat soluble they may accumulate in the liver and potentially cause harm.

Diabetes Council of America

Its not the total calories – the point of good nutrition, especially for someone about to degrade the health of their body, is to maximize the nutrition of the calories you are taking in – that is, get as many vitamins etc… with your 6000 calories.

jft

Nice promotion of the races at New Britain, but it’s a lame course. A good crit course should have multiple corners. New Britain has one real corner.

The course in Walnut Hill Park is like Central Park on downers.

Participants can have fun, and if you want to race and can’t do Prospect or Maltese, go and see it.

DHR

160 calories of good old american stimulating beverages. Remeber these guys are shortly going to be buring 6000 calories a day. In order to keep themselves fueled up for that they need to stuff themselves with as many calories as possible. HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) is calorically dense, and as a liquid doesn’t actually make you feel full like eating real food. Coke is one of the things that fuels the peleton. Would you rather them eating sticks of butter for their caloric needs?

The Storm

New Britain is one of (in my opinion) the best crit courses within 60 miles of us…..no real sharp corners….one small incline to breakaway on….and one downhill…..spint is on a flat with slight right bend 300m before the finish line…..

race is run pretty damn well too!!

see u guys there

Johnny nutrition

I love that these world class athletes (Karpets shown) drink coke for breakfast… before the most grueling event and important event (in most) of their lives. 160 calories devoid of any nutrition…

Potty

My sister is in London over the weekend and thought that it would be too much trouble to go to the prologue. How did she ever get this way. She would rather stroll around outside Wimbledon with no hope of getting in. Some people have so little perspective in life. Strawberries and cream vs Tdf prologue. How could she?

Steve

My old team in the UK, Addiscombe CC, is based around South London which happens to be where many of the teams are staying. Somehow they are managing to be leading some of the teams on training rides around local club routes. Acting as guides you might say, and in return being allowed to photograph away. Visit this link for some training photos: http://www.addiscombe.org/members/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4589

and then browse the general forum to read a bit more of their hysteria. Lucky sods.
