It’s a well known fact that in order to fulfill the contract with the voices in my head, I have to write something about every race I take part in. Sometimes these missives are long and detailed, and sometimes (foreshadowing) they are brief and lack specific detail.

April 5th, Lucarelli and Castaldi race
Teammate Aaron got into the break and was assaulted by the Mengoni team who took places one through five, with Eugene B winning the race. I stayed in the pack and rode as little as possible. Chris Y of Kissena took off late and I chased him down out of spite and in the name of getting a workout, but mostly because of spite—because spite is a main motivator in my life.
April 19, CRCA Points Race
I dislike points races because they are sprinting contests and I am not a sprinter. My teammate Dylan, however, can sprint; so we worked for him. Unfortunately, Zach K can also sprint and was often a few spots ahead of Dylan. Dylan tired of this, and broke away for about eight miles by himself. He was caught, and rightly dropped to the back of the pack to rest and ruminate. I dropped back to find him and led him to the front using all of my honed and perfected lazy racing skillz. He finished second in the final sprint, which means I finished second also because I consider all teammate successes to also be my own.
May 3, R&A Cycle Series race
A full pack of masters in Prospect Park, means a field sprint. Fortunately I had a flat with two laps to go, otherwise I totally would’ve won that race.
May 6 FBF
It is once again FBF Tuesday Night racing time! This is a something that I honestly get much too exited about, but I live the life of a suburban drone parent—so cut me some slack—it’s either get excited about this or I start heckling the kids at my daughter’s drama classes.
I am racing in the combination 3/4ths/elderly field at FBF this season because DON’T JUDGE ME! It’s not illegal and I have every right to race against the old and inexperienced, and I raced the 1/2/3 field last year, so I feel fine about my decision. I also have special dispensation from my life coach Mihael to participate in the 3/4ths field, so any issues with my choice to ride with the 3/4ths field should be addressed to him.
That being said, I picked up Life Coach Mihael (LCM) at our usual rendezvous spot on the lower West Side of Manhattan (a pick up spot where, if this occurrence happened at night, would probably arouse the interest of the vice squad), and we made our way to FBF. We chatted incessantly on our way to the race, registered and did some warm up laps.
There were large fields assembled for both races and getting away would be a challenge, but if you don’t try to get away, you might as well ride to the donut shop because you’ll at least get pastry that way. Teammate Aaron is also racing with the old and unsullied, so it was a nice change of pace to have someone to race with in the 3/4ths on a Tuesday night. Our plan was to “attack it and crack it”, because it’s a bike race and it’s fun to try and win them.
The race started and as we hit turn one, I jumped because: YOLO, super early attacks work sometimes and to set the tone for the race—if you sit in and sprint, you will be punished. I set the tone for about a half lap with Michael from FGX, before coming back to the pack. After that, there were attacks and jumps and counters of many shaped, sizes and degrees of success. Teammate Aaron attacked just after the midpoint of the race and got a gap by himself. He kept it for about a lap or so, which was nice because it made some of the other guys in the race work a bit. He was eventually brought back, and we as we rolled past the finish line, Charlie I told us that the second green jersey sprint would be with two laps to go. I readied myself, because “If you sprint, you will be punished.”
I got myself in the top ten places of the race, and after the sprint happened, I took off. This was the most basic of race tactics, but—like ketchup or capes (it’s a look I’m trying to bring back)—it’s basic because it works. For about half a lap or so, I pedaled until I couldn’t recall pronouns or my return address. I turned around to assess whether the effort had been worthwhile, and it looked like we had a small working group assembled. Things were looking up.
In the initial stages of the break, we had five people who were working: me, a Kissena guy, the guy with long hair with a Campmor jersey on, Ernie from RBNY and Scott G from Wonderwheel. We also had a big guy from team “South Shore or something like that, it’s a new Jersey” who was kind of working but mostly he was going to the front of the break and surging, which in the delicate world of breakaway riding etiquette is like going to a christening and punching the baby in the face. There were protestations from the group about this behavior, but they were unheeded.
Thankfully my teammate Aaron jumped up to our move just before we hit the bell for the last lap, I then took a survey of the break and found that we had been joined by Sam F, teammate of the baby-punching surge person mentioned above. Then things started to make more sense. Well, kind of. Sam is a sprinter who can jump up to a break and cling to it like a lycra barnacle, which is what sprinters should do. Once Sam made it to the break, his teammate should’ve been interested in making the break last, and should’ve pulled like a normal person. But this didn’t happen, he kept surging, whether this was on purpose or due to the laws of the universe not applying to a 3/4ths field, I could not tell. But it didn’t matter, we only had about 15 seconds on the field, and if we didn’t work, we’d be caught and could console ourselves with 50th place.
I knew we needed about a half lap of concerted rotating, so after the baby puncher pulled off. We rotated through. I pulled through the tailwind section to keep the speed up, and after we made it through turn three, I was optimistic about our chances. baby puncher hit the front between turns three and four, and Ernie, who didn’t know we were finishing (counting is hard), slipped in behind him. I was on Scott G’s wheel, and when we hit the final turn, he jumped. Sam jumped us from the far left, and I tried to follow Scott. Sam won, Scott was second and I was third. Teammate Aaron was fourth, which was a great effort as he was pretty tired after bridging to us. And yes, I know we should’ve traded attacks on Sam, but Aaron wasn’t able to attack after his effort to make the break, so I played the solo game.
Sam won the race in one of the more unpopular manners. There’s no doubt that it was a successful strategy, but that victory created seven opponents who will not be very cooperative in the coming Tuesday nights. Like elephants or that kid from Better Off Dead who wanted his two dollars, breakaway riders have long memories and we don’t take kindly to baby punching.
The 3/4 field is lucky to have the opportunity to learn from him. Why not battle it out with stronger guys.

South Shore is not a licensed team. He usually registers as “triangle ride”. Don’t know what happened between him and Montecci. His brother is riding unattached. there are a bunch of riders racing as South Shore. They should put on a race like most other teams.

So with 63 masters 1-3 can we start talking about reinstating a 40+ field at Harlem?

I support you Sam. I think you will force others in the field to step up their game which is good for the racing.
The most likely reason you fail to perform in a 3/4ths race is that you suck at racing.
Even if Sam F get’s a forced upgrade, someone else is will come along and beat you. Get faster, get smarter, learn to enjoy life, or maybe switch to triathlon.
If this Sam guy is breaking the rules then he should be caught and dealt with, if not then live and let live. If NYSBRA is asleep at the wheel on this one, shame on them.
I think most opponents of Sam F on here are concerned with the integrity, sportsmanship and the rules, I honestly do not believe most racers are whining over a guy who simply is strong and wins.
I look forward to racing this Sam guy at the Absolutely Ridiculous FBF Course.

I’ve seen a lot of stories popping up on Facebook lately of people riding the Gran Fondo NY for charitable causes. I think it’s great. This makes me wonder about how strange it is that the largest cycling ride (not race) in the northeast is strictly for profit and still asks for volunteers. I’m all for a business making money, but I think if people are raising money for a charitable cause as part of their ride, their entry fee should be significantly reduced.
Does GFNY have any sort of a social mission or is it, lets just pay and ride?
