There are unsanctioned races
By: Quentin Dry Lube
Fri, 03/26/2010 - 12:41pm

There are unsanctioned races in nyc that are far older then Stuperbowl.

the reason red hook is getting so much attention (despite being such a young event) is because it is so media and spectator friendly. Like most crits it is easy to watch. Ever try spectating an allycat? I guess you can hang out at the finish and watch people come in but thats about it. And unlike the local racing scene it doesn't have a crack of dawn start time. All these things add up to lots of people coming out to watch and party. it also just happens to be a really good time. so that helps.

The Stuperbowl has been going on since 1999.
Cool shit has goes on all the time outside NYC. We just don't pay attention.
The Red Hook Crit is a newcomer as far as unsanctioned races go.

Sheesh, so defensive. its not worth trying to justify. if people think its cool, than they can race. otherwise they won't. who cares? you just sound like a desperate apologist. to try and make it seem legit by inflating the depth of the field is sort of silly. love it for what it is, nothing more. It like when i tell my coworkers that i did "the pro race" last weekend because it was technically P123. silly.

By: Tegghiaio Rivnut
Tue, 03/23/2010 - 10:23pm

Before I moved to NYC, I remember looking at magazines and reading about crazy shit. It looked like the coolest stuff always went on here. That trends always started here.

Here's why ... people have bored friends working in publishing here looking for stories. And they find stories. And the rest of the country doesn't get that. And they have friends who take cool ass pictures.

But after leaving the city on various tours I got to know the rest of the country. And there is some bad ass stuff going on everywhere. It is just that people don't have friends at the Times and the Post, and now the web. And the nice thing about bad ass stuff done elsewhere, is that until the advent of Facebook there weren't a million friends snapping photos and writing articles.

Not to diminish this race, which was pretty cool, but like lots of things in NYC, it has three sides. The side that David sees, namely a cool way to have a birthday. And then the side that New Yorkers see, which will always be this sarcastic boredom. And then finally the side that some kid in Japan sees: jeezus christ, NYC is the friggin bomb.

Tue, 03/23/2010 - 1:49pm

Please note that a lot of guys who participated in the Red Hook Crit were roadies. The event was photographed, and posted on a website that serves the entire NYC cycling community, but (let's face it) mainly roadies.

Also, welcome to NYC. People make fun of each other here, and this website magnifies that by 1000. If your skin isn't thick enough I would suggest you find a nice midwest city to live in, and/or a different website to frequent.

Why don't you look at my scene too? How come the Hippies get all the coverage? It looks like a party not a race. Those are not real athletes. The New York Post article makes it seem...
YOU make it seem like there was nothing else going on with your piss poor, woe is me attitude. Who cares whether anyone knows what lame training series happened this weekend? I know they didn't include podium girls or an art exhibit.
We didn't get into this sport to be seen, we do it because it's fun.
The RHC is something fresh and new to our scene. Let's embrace it and have some fun. Aside from Harlem Rocks it was one of the coolest races in NY in a while.
The culture of arrogance in roadies is disgusting. Forget about doping, it probably is this sport's biggest downfall.

By: Marius Bushing
Tue, 03/23/2010 - 12:29pm

why not have strobe lighting/lightning when a rider approaches corners and bmx jumps (crater size potholes), the fixie version of MX Super Sport!!! and then have the real Ducati street fighter version...instead of a lead vehicle, a REAL chase (and destroy) vehicle like a garbage truck instead of a broom wagon...
"Sunday Sunday Sunday"...see brakeless (mindless) messengers (please crash) ride cobbles at night with open streets...where was the trials category? flat land fixie freestyle? Posers to the absolute Nth degree...someone do that animated website thingy how many watts or gear ratio bs...

but still looks fun! I jest out of jealousy having missed it...trying to be snarklicious...

Mon, 03/22/2010 - 9:23pm

Thanks to MQ and Nyvelocity for covering the race this year. I realize it is not for everyone but I believe this type of racing event has huge potential. Next year the buses will be rerouted during the race. Perhaps with help from the community I'll also have permits. The format will stay the same. What's wrong with combining a competition for 'real' athletes with a party?

suspension
By: Ken Harris
Mon, 03/22/2010 - 5:28pm

I'm interested on what basis people claim that riders at Red Hook are in danger of suspension. I can think of two: if it were in a City park, it would violate the CRCA code. If you held a UCI license, there might be limitations on what events you could enter. Your sponsors might object, but that's between the rider and his team. If you held a position in cycling club or within a governing body such USCF, I could see them deeming it "unfitting conduct" and being removed from the position. Otherwise, I'm at a loss to see the problem with it.

I think the promoters are well-intentioned and dedicated, but I fear the worst case scenario here. Since there seemed to be buses on the course during the race, what would've happened if one of the racers had hit someone getting off the bus? I fear that the news would report this as "bike racers injure pedestrian"; and then there would be a unilateral backlash against all bike racing, culminating in the loss of racing in the parks—where racing has a tenuous hold at best.
