in my mind, harry got 3rd place. it’s too bad he wasn’t just warned. i’m sure if AA had to do it all over again, he’d perhaps think twice about a relegation. at least he was only demoted 5 places.

no one mentioned that NYVelocity swept the podium in the 4B race. awesome- even if it’s just the 4’s.

to those who think “whatever, it’s just the 4’s”. go tell your son, when he hits his first home run, “to get a grip”, that it was “just pee-wee league, and he shouldn’t get too excited over it”.

AA is cool in my book!

Wheelsucker

so you shouldn’t have a more realistic perspective than an excited 9 year old. wait, are you kidding? i can’t tell. i hope so.

Wheelsucker

At 12:06 – honestly dude, you sound like you’ve never won a race before. Cat 5 or Cat 1 – winning is winning – thats why we have categories. If you’ve ever won a race, you’d know what it feels like to beat the other riders who are giving it their all as well – it rocks, its fun, and it validates all the hard work put into doing all those intervals at 530am in CP.

But then again, I can only imagine where you’re coming from, bc it sounds like you’ve never won before.

Wheelsucker

haha, you just can’t bear (get it? “BEAR?”) the thought of all your 5am intervals culminating in an orgasmic explosion of expletives on the finish line that in turn earns you nothing but chuckles from the, um, “fans.” your friends’ wives and kids need to RECO’NIZE!!!

Wheelsucker

Well, you have to apply the rules in a consistent fashion. Spring bear 2007, Royal Potty (mouth?) crossed the line to take the Men’s 4 win and bellowed “M—–F—-er!!!” as he took the win. AA was there as chief official and I believe ‘stoffle got a solid reprimand for his inappropriate language. But his result still stands. The rules have to be enforced evenly. Either everyone gets a warning or everyone gets relegated.

FWIW, there were far more young children at the Lake Welch finish line than were there this past Sunday.

But before anyone goes hurling accusations of suckage at Alan Atwood, please get a grip. He is almost as much of a boon to racing in our area as Charlie I. The vacuum of talent and reasonableness that would occur if he left our sport would be debilitating. For example we’d be subjected to the poor judgment and petulant behavior of Kyle Wolfe, who’s behavior at registration on Sunday was immature and inappropriate. Without Alan, Kyle and others like him would actually have jurisdiction over our competitions.

Is Alan perfect? Well, no. But neither am I nor you. And consider the alternative before you go slamming a guy who devotes most of his free time so we can shave our legs and ride around in circles.

LR

Royal Potty got off with a stern warning because he said what he said was not MF, but some other south African phrase that sounds just like MF. He was given the benefit of the doubt.

Talk all the shit you want in private. When you are in public with others listening, you should learn to keep it clean. Does it really matter, no but you will offend some folks that can have a bad effect on things that do matter to you.

Wheelsucker

I prefer to break out in show tunes when crossing the line. “Hello Dolly” goes great with a 1st place finish.

Wheelsucker

I’m not saying its justifiable to yell out expletives, but I think you’re missing the point that your comment about being excited “like he had just won milan-san remo. . .” illustrates that you don’t what its like to see your hard work pay off – not everyone can be a cat 1 pro-ass bike racer. And winning is winning.

All said, I agree, yelling expletives when children are around is not really a the greatest for the sport.

Wheelsucker

ditto 9:18. if you dont yell or throw a salute when you win (cat 5,4,3,2,1) b/c you think someone’s going to laugh at you, just go home. (if you haven’t noticed, they’re already laughing at you b/c you’re a grown man riding a bike in full length superhero underoos that give us a clear outline of your puny nuts.) more likely, you’ve never won. and let me tell you, fool, winning is sweeeeet sweeeeet sweeeeet.

Wheelsucker

it’s cute how excitable 4s imagine no one can possibly understand their profound joys and sacrifices. that’s a nice thing about this sport.

i’ve won a few times, and it’s true that winning a cat 4 race is no less satisfying than winning in higher categories. i never understand people who are in a hurry to upgrade without wins – why cheat yourself out of that experience? i’m just saying you need to keep it in perspective. if you lose your head and act like an idiot, and get a slap on the wrist from an official who’s a mensch, don’t go complaining about it.

Wheelsucker

humility, dude. get some perspective. you can work hard and still suck, even on that not-that-grand scale. beating a bunch of guys who also suck does not change this.

enjoy your wins – i’m not saying you don’t deserve it. just recognize what “it” is, because it ain’t much.

Wheelsucker

What the fk are you talkign about “it aint much” – you’re an idiot. Anyone who puts the amount of time into something, I don’t care if its ultimate frisbee, bowling, golf, or darts, is working toward a goal to win at their ability level. Cat 5 or Cat 1 – its not a matter of “suck,” but a matter of equal ability. YES, its a hobbie and a sport, AND should be fun and not serious, but if you don’t care about winning join fk’ing NYCC.

Wheelsucker

I’m a teammate of the offending potty mouth. For the record, he wasn’t swearing because he won and was excited etc. He was egging on a teammate up the road, and meant it in joking manner. Upon seeing how close he was to the finish (and the few assembled spectators) he immediately knew it was a mistake, stopped and apologized profusely to Alan. While I’m sure he was hoping he wouldn’t get relegated and that legions of Internet surfers for perpetuity could see that in fact he was the 3rd rider across the line in the 4B field of the 2010 Bear race, he hasn’t complained to anyone about the relegation, and took responsibility for the error. Harry will be on plenty of podiums in the future, and will have chances to swear from excitement (and to bear the consequences) if he so chooses.

Now we can we get back to bashing Lance Armstrong instead of our fellow amateur racers?

Wheelsucker

interesting how many comments this has provoked. as the original poster, i again implore people who have advised others to “get a grip” to also get one themselves (preferably in private) as the “AA, you suck” bit was a complete joke. AA does amazing work locally and should absolutely be applauded. don’t go getting your chamois all in a bunch. i know we are mostly roadies here and fun and humor when dealing with bike racing is a pretty foreign concept, but LTFU (lighten the fudge up).

Wheelsucker

aarrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh, no no no! bashing fellow racers is what we were founded on! jesus h. it’s a refreshing break from the other stuff thats taken over this place like a f-ckin virus, please, for the love of g-d, keep it going. ill actually be the first to call heretic harry a sandbagger just to keep this thing going, upgrade you foul-mouthed foolio!

Wheelsucker

good post. the (successful) rush to upgrade often leads to a lot of frustration and eventual abandonment of the sport

Wheelsucker

yeah, aa sucks. he punished the guy for yelling obscenities in front of spectators and children by demoting him 5 places, instead of disqualifying him and suspending him for 15 days, as the rules allow. how dare he? doesn’t he know that this was the cat 4b tristate area world championships?

you people need to get a grip. there was a good video a few years back of a crca c race, where the winner let out a huge scream after winning the 19 mph field sprint, like he had just won milan-san remo. the spectators cracked up, because it was ridiculous. remember that the next time you’re tempted to start cursing at a race with people watching, and control yourself.

Wheelsucker

um, i beg to differ on who needs to “get a grip”. the comment is a joke and should be taken as such. and what do you mean by “you people” anyway, eh?

Tea

Was this a race or an easy century ride, can’t tell from the pics.

Who the hell is Toto and why do I have to know his favorite food?????

spokesucker

this cat 4 business of yelling obscenities upon crossing the line has occurred like 4 times already. you would think people would catch on.. not called excitable for nothing.

Wheelsucker

12:06 stfu. You probably don’t watch R rated movies, or the Sopranos. It was an exchange between a couple of frenemy teammates. A little profane, sure. Unsportsman like? Not even close. Really, who f’ing cares.

Wheelsucker

royal potty got lucky. He convinced the chief ref that he yelled out a South African phrase. Otherwise he too would have been punished. Also, IIRC, AA was not chief ref at that race. He was co-promoter. So it was someone else who made the decision.

Wheelsucker

“i’m sure if AA had to do it all over again, he’d perhaps think twice about a relegation”

are you? are you sure?
