Giro argument

Wed, 06/03/2009 - 1:56pm by schmalz

I feel obliged to make an argument page about the Giro that just finished. Where we can discuss Menchov's heart stopping backside TT slide, or we can discuss LPR's seemingly endless stints at the front to control the race for Menchov; but I must admit that I'm feeling a letdown after the rain out of FBF last night, so my heart really isn't in it. So discuss if you must; I will be lamenting the lost opportunity for self-flagellation.

Even without race radio

Even without race radio, there's a moto with a chalkboard giving gaps... albeit less often.

On top of that, you can tell the gap to some extent by the commissaire's car. When the gap is above 1 minute, the commissaire's car is allowed between the break and the other guys. When the gap drops below 1 minute, the commissaire's car has to get out of the way.

"Menchov would have had to at some point consider pulling, out of concern that he would lose to overall GC to Sastre. But he didn't have to do that and Di Luca knew it."

Even without Radios doesn't always work that way. One advantage of being the leader is that everyone else needs to protect their GC position before you do.

In your example, everyone could have lost the GC and/or their GC to Sastre.

Race Radio killed the Giro

Dan, I'm starting to come around to your no race radio position after this years Giro. The race was good this year but it could have been better. What changed my thinking was reading this post on cycllingnews.

'I would like to see them limited. I just posted in one of the Giro threads an example from the Vesuvius stage. Here's pretty much a cut and paste: When Sastre took off up the road for Vesuvius, he could not be seen by the leaders due to the topography. They had no idea how far up the road he was. Except they did, because of race radio.
Had there been no radio to give Menchov time splits on Sastre, Di Luca could have sat on Menchov's wheel and said "you guess how far he is up the mountain buddy" and Menchov would have had to at some point consider pulling, out of concern that he would lose to overall GC to Sastre. But he didn't have to do that and Di Luca knew it.
He only had to worry about one rider: Di Luca. The team car kept checks on Sastre for him. To me, this is what needs to be eliminated.
The advantage of race radio is informing the riders of hazards immediately. But I'd like to think there are ways of having this still workable through radio limitations.'

I agree with all of those points and feel that having the radio for Domestiques calling for the team car for bottles or injury improved the sport.

Ha ha, that's funny. Took the KOM on lap 4. Like any race in Prospect park would actually make a KOM out of that tiny little bump. Oh, wait...
