Regarding the proposed CRCA Bylaws, I don’t think Marmo’s face punching at the Bicycling events should be the type of act that gets him in trouble for bringing disrepute to the team (it would be different had he been wearing kit).

I sent an email this morning. I got a very quick reply, less than 5 minutes, letting me know they were at capacity but would add me to the wait list.

Steve Marmo assaults someone at a Bicycling event last night and should go to jail. I watched it happen along with 40 others at the party. You delete the post. Another person posts hearsay about a Foundation rider assaulting a race official and you let it post even though the guy is not a Foundation rider or representative. Your editorial objectivity is as reasonable as Fox news.

There is endless hearsay and speculation regarding Foundation posted on this site. Foundation has a great program and the level of unfounded trash talk on this site could result in ending years of good honest work by Ric Wolf to develop an elite team. Shame on you.

so, how is this event you speak of any different from what happened in New Britain? Sorry, but people are fed up with the shenanigans associated with Foundation. If this, in fact, happened, give it time. Its only 9:44 in the morning after all!

As was discussed, New Britain involved a non-Foundation rider punching an official – it was widely discussed here as a Foundation rider punching an official.

I thought Marmo was already banned from CRCA for bike throwing. Guess he will get banned from Bicycling parties too.

how is he still in the club? in a violent altercation after a park race two years ago and now violently assaults another rider at a bicycling magazine event. what a disgrace.

The NYT article about Marmo made it sound like he generally had issues with fighting/violence and alcohol. Cycling was his way out, but sadly doesn’t look like that is working 100% for him.

i would argue that when a person is disputing something with an official on behalf of a foundation rider, its fair to say that that person is (temporarily, at least) associated with foundation. that may not be entirely fair to a guy like Rick Wolf, but its the way it looks to the world at large. Do you expect guys in New Britain to tell the difference between a bunch of NYC iDOTs? The real problem is guilt by association, which is a real thing and still results in bad mojo for the whole CRCA.

Andy – Why delete this particular post? People get razzed pretty hard on this site and it stays up. Why was the Marmo post any different? Why not delete all the Foundation posts then?

I was there as well-didn’t see it happen just heard the ruckus and was not surprised Marmo was involved. I heard he sucker punched a guy that made a comment about his ex girlfriends cherry tattoos -one the back of each thigh-isn’t 3 cherries a winner?

indeed. i want to start flaming, but i don’t have anything to work with. for the love of nyvelocity hate culture, someone post some details–real or made up…makes no difference to me.

Dave Howard here, executive editor of Bicycling magazine. The incident that took place at the tail end of our event was an unfortunate finish to a great night, and we hope everyone is okay. We didn’t expect that to happen and thankfully it was sorted out very quickly. We really appreciate that so many people came out to celebrate an incredible race with us – thanks again.

Reply

at a cycling event, yes, you would be the bad guy because cyclist’s are typically non-confrontational wimps. anywhere else, you’d be the hero.

A guy who touches a woman inaproprietly against her wishes deserves to get punched in the face. Not only should he not be thrown out of CRCA, he should get a call up at the next A race.

Reply
Nanni Chainsuck

unfortunately they have their story wrong. the only inappropriate touching was marmo violently sucker punching someone.

I deleted the original posts because I didn’t know that something had really happened. I thought it was just some guys randomly giving Marmo shit for no good reason. Maybe I was quick on the draw because the tone’s been kinda nasty here for a while.

It’s true that people get razzed here, but I try to delete stuff that has no basis in fact. The Foundation talk was based on actual incidents.

Once I realized that something did happen I left it alone. Our CMS deletes comments forever so there’s no bringing comments back, but they didn’t say much.

There is no excuse for his action. Unfortunately he has demonstrated this kind of short fuse behavior before and does not appear to have his anger management issues under control. I hope he uses this as an opportunity to get some help. Its a big man that realizes he has a problem and has the courage to face up to it.

When I read the article about him in the NY Times a while ago, it made me feel great about cycling and what it can do for people and how it brings together a truly diverse group of people together. As his friends, we don’t need to defend his behavior, but we should encourage him to get help.

None of us are perfect, so lets not be too quick to judge.

Andy, you’re the man and you give a lot to the cycling community on whole. I commend your judgement to delete the Marmo posts. Aside from the tricky Captcha questions, it is too easy for some to air their dirty laundry on this site.

Sometimes small children need rules and oversight to keep them from a ‘Lord Of The Flies’ type outcome. Maybe some rules and oversight could be helpful towards making this an even better website.

Please don’t let the vocal minority abuse this excellent website to further their negative agendas. Advertisers and readers don’t want their money and time spent in places which emit a constant negative vibe.

Thanks

Thanks. We try hard to moderate the site properly, we don’t have a perfect solution but we give it more thought than you’d think and we’re open to suggestions. We don’t always make the right call and you’re welcome to hammer us for it.

We’d love it if it was nice and positive and happy in here, but if you look around the internet I think you’d see that snarkiness and bitchiness is pretty much the norm for online discourse. Many have suggested that login for the site would fix this but it’s so easy to beat that with a fake email address and a fake account.

We dislike the tone that can overtake the site at times, but we err towards not censoring. I’ve been a bit more aggressive in deleting things lately but as you can see from today that doesn’t make people happy either.

I’ve never seen Marmo start a fight at a race yet. He’s been cool with me and lots of others.
From what i hear the bike throw was because he was thrown with water at his face. If that’s true then the other guy deserved it. I saw a Team united guy scream and harrass Marmo while in a race in P.Park and the “other guy” quickly found out he picked the wrong guy.
There is alot of prima donna B****** in nyc cycling and when they feel brave because they are probably stronger on the bike or in a team that is dominating these guys just want to go around screaming and yelling like if everyone is gonna take it. Welcome to NYC if you’re man enough to scream and yell at another grown man over a bicycle race then be man enough for the consequences. If you don’t have the balls to get into a little fist fight then don’t yell at another MAN! Simple as that respect goes a long way.
Plenty of times i wanted to crack a few in the head but i bite my lip due to the fact that i have a teams logo everywhere on my body. Relax on Marmot he’s not a bad guy. BTW,like alot of people have mention….if you’re bad mouthing someone post your name. Bet you don’t have the BALLS!

Cmon dude,

He punched a guy in the face unprovoked because of an issue with his ex girlfriend. He can’t be defended. That is a clear cut assault.

p.s.

for the record I would have arm barred his ass so fast he would have tapped in a second.

MArmo is a short fuse guy, Full of tatoos(nothing against it) and always angry. Nice guy thou, brave and emotional with a bad reputation/
Gustavo is always laughing, nothing to do with Foundation other to be friend some riders like he does from other teams, business man, and helps a lot of people around, he gave bike to some new guys, get Hispanics USa Cycling licenses and host people on his house all the time.
I think if we don know what happend in those two case let heard it from them, it is no fear to make judgement.
PD: Kyle Wolfe is not a saint and we all know that.
I hope thisone dont get erased.

The fact that “fighting” gets you quick suspension, gives a lot not-so-tough guys the balls to mouth off in CP, PP, and Floyd. You shouldn’t think you can say ANYTHING without consequences. If it was in a bar or on the subway, these wimps would keep their mouths shut.

(These comments have nothing with Marmo, although I hope he gets a fair break)

Marmo needs to be permanently banned from the CRCA immediately. He violently assaulted another CRCA member – who cares if it wasn’t at an official club event. Think about the other guy — the one who got stitches after being sucker punched. How’s that guy supposed to enjoy racing in a CRCA event when the guy who assaulted him is on a bike in the same field? How would you feel? And there are liability issues for the club as well: if this guy goes off again and sucker punches some guy – or worse – for some bullshit reason, how can the club possibly say it didn’t know what the guy was capable of? The CRCA board needs to step up and take some responsibility. You guys go ape shit when guys ride in the rec lane or lay their bikes in the precious Central Park grass at sign in. Well, a club member got sucker punched by a thug with a clearly violent history. Get this punk out of our races.

Marmo has been kicked off AG, but beyond that, there is no responsibility for CRCA to police drunken bar brawls…yes, it is douchey to police CP grass and foot paths, but those are the rules of CP to race in CP, so if you read your CRCA website code of conduct, is why CRCA polices those matters…
NYVC should police it themselves, or you mr anon shoudda cudda wudda go police Marmo some yourself…

keep the anon douchey comments coming and see where it gets you…

Mathias Compliant- Then they should also ban any CRCA member who commits SEXUAL violence against another member. the whole reason marmo punched the guy (in the face, which by definition isnt a sucker punch), was because he aggressively grabbed a woman with intent.

Reply
@Bernardo Topcap

i know you clearly want to defend your friend / teammate (or I guess former teammate) but making up outrageous lies about sexual violence to defend a douchebag who sucker punched another rider is unbelievably lame.

The CRCA Code of Conduct states: “I will treat club members, racers, officials, park users, and the public with respect.”

Sucker punching a fellow club member in a way that results in a hospital visit and stitches would seem to be a fairly explicit sign of disrespect. The code doesnt say anything about limiting this sort of behavior to races. CRCA officers have all the authority they need to keep Marmo out of races. They should exercise it.

the victim was talking to a group of people that happened to include Marmo’s ex. He didn’t know that at the time (as if it mattered). He made no “advances” toward anyone, as any of the 40+ witnesses will attest. He was talking when Marmo cold cocked him. Pathetic.

Reply

Clearly has no ability to control his temper and when he loses it the result is physical violence. That makes him a liability at any CRCA event (or any event involving the cycling community as a whole). The CRCA board needs to step up on this one and send a strong message that assaulting fellow CRCA members isn’t acceptable.

If you kick Marmo out of the club he’s bound to kill someone. I suggest that the CRCA board allow him to remain in the club AND race so long as he is getting help for his anger issues and violent tendencies (which sound alcohol related – pure speculation). Let’s try to help rather than compound the problem.
